A/N Hey all and welcome to the next chapter of Loud inFAMY! In this chapter we're going to take a peek at how the Louds are dealing with the aftermath of the Blast, and Lincoln begins to take steps towards mastering his new abilities. I hope you enjoy this chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Lincoln once again found himself waking up in absolute agony. His blurry eyes slowly opened as the headache caused him to wince at the bright light coming from his window. Taking a moment to assess his surroundings he found that he was lying in what had to be a makeshift hospital room.
He immediately noticed a lack of any and all electrical devices, even the light fixture above him had been removed. He groaned as he attempted to bring his hand to his forehead only to find that his hands had been strapped to the bed. Panic set in, he began to think that he had been kidnapped. As adrenaline coursed through his body he was shocked when he snapped the straps holding him down with little effort.
As he sat up, swinging his legs from the bed, he began to hear voices coming from outside. When the door opened he was surprised to see his family talking to a team of doctors, each of his sisters trying to talk at once and occasionally arguing with each other when they weren't heard. All talking/arguing stopped however, when everyone noticed the white haired teen sitting on the side of his bed.
Immediately the Loud family rushed forward enveloping their brother/son in a bone crushing hug as they began crying. Lincoln did his best to reassure his family that everything was fine, but it was proving difficult to do so mostly due to how loud his family was being.
Eventually the family quieted down enough for the doctors to speak, and made space for them to do a check up on Lincoln, not taking their eyes away from the sight of their family member being checked up on.
For several minutes Lincoln was being poked and prodded by the doctors as they checked his vitals. It struck him as odd that they were using less advanced tools and that they were doing their best to not touch him with their bare hands.
When the doctors had finished their check up, they left the room to record their findings, leaving the sole Loud boy alone with his family. It was then that he noticed that everyone looked a bit tense and each of his sisters were giving him strange, wary looks, almost as if they were afraid of him.
"So…" he began, "You guys wanna explain to me why everyone looks so tense?
The family looked at each other before Luna stepped forward, a nervous look on her face.
"Linc…" She said, "How much do you remember about the Blast?"
Lincoln blinked, before taking a moment to recollect on the events leading up to the blast.
"I remember quite a bit actually." he said, " I remember going to your concert, then escorting Lisa to a meeting with one of her colleagues, where she was given some weird package."
He paused for a moment, watching his family's reactions to what he was telling them. He saw concern, anger, fear, and confusion cross each of their features.
Continuing from where he left off Lincoln said, "Lisa asked me to hold the package for a moment, but as soon as I took it from her, she activated some device on her wrist and then teleported away just as the package exploded."
It was then that Lincoln noticed that Lisa wasn't in the room with the rest of the family, causing him to become alarmed as he didn't know what happened to his little sister.
"Guys?" he asked, "Where is Lisa anyway?"
It was Lynn who answered this time around as she looked incredibly frustrated and potentially very angry.
"We don't know." she said, "No one has seen her in days."
"WAIT!" cried Lincoln, "What the hell do you mean days?!"
Lynn flinched at the sound of her brother's voice, while the rest of the family tried to calm him down.
"It's been four days since the blast happened bro." said Lynn. "You've been unconscious since you got to the medical tents back at the arena."
Lincoln began breathing heavily, his body becoming numb at the thought that he had been in the hospital for so long. But most of all he was terrified about what could have potentially happened to his little sister.
"Have the police found any clue about where Lisa could be?"
Once again his family members looked at each other before Lynn Sr. spoke.
"No they haven't." he said, "The Police are stretched too thin as it is and can't afford to devote any time looking for a missing girl considering what's been going on since the Blast."
Lincoln looked confused. His family looked nervous, almost afraid to tell him what was going on.
"Guys. Be honest with me." he said, "What's been going on since I lost consciousness?"
After a few moments of hesitation, the family began to tell Lincoln about how immediately after the Blast, the entirety of Great Lakes City was put into quarantine. Apparently a deadly plague was spreading throughout the city at a rapid pace, causing the government to put the city on lock down, closing all roads and bridges into town.
During this, the amount of crime in the city skyrocketed, with rioting, looting, rapes, and murders happening daily causing the city's police force to be spread thin while trying to maintain order. It was made more dangerous as during the chaos several gangs have sectioned off and taken over parts of the city and killed anyone who gets in their way.
As Lincoln listened to his family's story, he could feel his heart racing as he was regaled with tales of human depravity. It became worse when he was told that since the city was locked down they were trapped and unable to return home. Lincoln began to panic as more and more details were given, he held his head in his palms in a desperate attempt to keep himself calm.
"Linky are you ok?" he heard Leni ask. Moments later he felt a hand fall on his shoulder, causing him to jump in fright. Using his hand to shield himself and to push whoever was so close back, he was shocked when a bolt of blue tinged electricity shot from his hand, narrowly missing his family members and causing them to leap backward.
"What the hell just happened?!" Lincoln shouted, looking at his hand in awe and confusion.
"We were hoping you could tell us." said Lucy from the other side of Lincoln's bed causing him to jump and once again shoot out some electricity.
"Geez Luce! Give a guy a warning before you sneak up on them!" he cried.
"Sorry elder brother," she said, "But as I was saying we were hoping that you could tell us about your new abilities."
"Yeah," said Luan, "Things have been a bit electrifying around you since the blast." Everyone groaned but then informed Lincoln that while he was unconscious he would occasionally let out a small blast of electrical energy which was why there were no electronics in his room. This alarmed Lincoln, who began to think he might be too dangerous to have his family around him.
"Man…" he said, "I wish Lisa was here to be able to explain this."
Soon a thought crept into his head and he turned back to his family.
"So since the whole city is locked down, where have you guys all been staying? With the Casagrandes? Speaking of…where's Ronnie Anne?"
At the mention of the Mexican family's name several family members flinched, something that Lincoln caught immediately and his heart dropped.
It was Rita who answered the question.
"Due to the lockdown we decided that it was safer for all of us to stay together so we've been camping out on the rooftop of the building Lori lives in." she said before looking at her son with a downcast expression.
"We figured it was a good idea to give the Casagrandes some space since they are having a hard time dealing with the lockdown and their grief."
At the mention of the word grief, and the fact that his friend wasn't here with them, the white haired man immediately thought the worst.
"Is Ronnie Anne okay!?" he asked frantically.
"Ronnie Anne is fine, Lincoln…" said Lori, "But…Mrs. Santiago…she's…" unfortunately Lori couldn't continue speaking as she began to sob almost uncontrollably. Lynn Sr. picked up where his daughter left off and finished telling Lincoln what had happened.
"Unfortunately…Mrs. Santiago was caught in the Blast along with several other people. None of them survived." said the Loud Patriarch.
Lincoln felt his eyes water as he thought about what his friend and her family were going through. He couldn't imagine losing a member of his own family, and considering how close the Casagrandes were with each other, the entire family must be devastated.
Lisa what have you done? He thought to himself.
-=o=-
The next few days were a blur of activity for the Loud family. Lincoln was released a day after waking up as, after the doctors had done a battery of tests, he was deemed fit enough to leave with family. Although Lincoln felt fine, better in fact, than he had in years, he secretly suspected that the doctors were terrified of his new abilities and wanted him as far away as possible.
Just as his family had said, he joined them as they camped out on the roof of Lori's building, which wasn't that far from the Casagrande's. He was pleasantly surprised to find that Clyde was staying with his family as well, and didn't visit him in the hospital only because the doctors wouldn't allow so many people to visit at once.
Two days after being released from the hospital, Lincoln paid a visit to the Casagrandes and offered his condolences to the grieving family. He also gave Ronnie Anne a massive, bone-breaking hug, as she cried into his shoulder. He also took the time to show the girl his newfound powers and she looked on in awe as he did so.
Shortly after that meeting, Ronnie Anne and Clyde decided to help Lincoln learn to master his powers. After hours of training, Lincoln discovered he could shoot out small bolts of lightning from his hands and, with a little target practice courtesy of Lynn Jr., Lincoln became very good at hitting whatever he aimed at. He also discovered that he was much stronger and more durable than the average human, as he was able to lift a small car with little effort and, after being hit by a speeding car he was able to walk away and completely heal himself by absorbing electricity from a nearby source. He also learned what his weakness was, as during one training session he stepped into a large puddle, causing his body to essentially short circuit until he stepped away from the water. After some trial and error, Lincoln learned that while he could drink water and other liquids just fine, if he was splashed or stepped into a puddle it caused intense pain and his powers went haywire. This led him to conclude that if he needed to bathe he would have to give himself a sponge bath, and he could no longer go swimming as any body of water larger than a puddle would probably kill him.
During this time Lincoln discovered he was not the only one who had developed some kind of ability from the blast, as he soon learned that Lynn, Lucy, and Lana had also gained powers as well. Lynn discovered completely by accident that she was invulnerable when Lincoln shot a bolt during target practice and accidently caused a small explosion next to Lynn. While everything around the Sporty Loud sister was destroyed and smoldering, along with her clothes, Lynn was completely unharmed. Through more testing she discovered that while she wasn't as strong as Lincoln (to her annoyance), she was far more durable. Where Lincoln would be sent flying with minor injuries from being hit by a car, Lynn simply caused the car to come to a complete sudden stop, totaling the car.
Lana began tinkering with any piece of junk she could get her hands on in an effort to stave off boredom. After building a small statue out of scrap metal, she was surprised when she accidentally channeled her energy into the statue, causing it to come to life. Soon she had a small army of junk soldiers, which she would send out on supply runs so that her family didn't endanger themselves out on the streets, which were becoming worse as time went by.
Lincoln had no idea how Lucy discovered her abilities, and the young goth girl refused to elaborate any further, but it was a complete shock to the family when she used the very shadows around her to reach some supplies that were on the other side of the rooftop.
In an effort to discover what Lisa knew about the Blast, Lola managed to get into Lisa's laptop that she had left in Vanzilla prior to the concert. After correctly guessing her password (it was of course Lisa's birthday) the family discovered that Lisa was doing research into something called the Conduit Gene. In the document, Lisa went on to record that she had done some tests on the family and learned that Lori, Luna, Lynn, Lincoln, Lucy, Lana and herself had the Conduit Gene, but was unable to determine if Leni, Luan, Lola or Lily had it as well.
Unable to make heads or tails out of the rest of the document caused the Louds to reach a dead end when it came to discovering Lisa's involvement in the Blast. So the Louds and Clyde instead focused on just getting by during the lockdown, which was made a bit easier when the government began dropping supplies into the city about once a day. At least it was easier until the local gang began attacking people in an effort to steal the supplies for themselves.
Before anyone knew it, fourteen days had passed since the city was placed in Quarantine. Currently Lincoln, Clyde, and the rest of the Louds were lounging around on their rooftop sanctuary completely bored out of their minds. The setup they had was pretty efficient with several tents on one part of the roof for everyone to sleep in, and a covered area with a TV and several chairs off to one side. If they needed to use the toilet or shower they used the facilities in Lori's apartment, but they used a makeshift kitchen area to prepare food, which unfortunately was just canned foods and non perishables until the quarantine was over, whenever that was. Any electronics they had were hooked up to spare car batteries that Lincoln, to his annoyance, recharged wherever they died.
At the moment everyone was watching TV, which mostly consisted of reruns or news reports about the quarantine. As they watched a rerun of The Dream Boat for the umpteenth time their attention was momentarily grabbed when the TV abruptly died, signaling that the battery had died. As everyone groaned in annoyance, Lincoln stood up and approached the battery.
"Don't worry everyone, I got it." he said. He then shot a small stream of electricity into the battery, charging it and turning the TV back on. Just to be safe he went around the roof and charged the batteries for the other electrical devices. After receiving some small thanks from his family, Lincoln decided to get some practice in by shooting some mannequins they had salvaged from nearby, taking care not to shoot the ones that Leni was using to make clothes.
"Do you think we'll ever find Lisa?" said Lucy from behind Lincoln, causing him to jump and fire off a bolt of electricity into the air.
"Jeez, Luce. Give a guy a warning will ya?" Lincoln gasped out as he tried to steady her heart. He looked at his sister who gave him an apologetic shrug. Lincoln brought his sister into a hug. This wasn't the first time he had to comfort one of his sisters, or the first time they brought up Lisa.
"We'll find her Luce. I know we will." he said. Before he could do anything else, everyone's attention was drawn upwards as the roar of an approaching plane came from above. They watched as a large low flying plane flew overhead heading in the direction of Flores Park. Soon the sound of static made everyone look at the TV as a heavily distorted image came into view.
"Oh sweet, it's that TV jacker dude." said Luna as everyone stood around the TV. Soon the picture cleared revealing a thin man in a white shirt with the lower half of his face covered by a bandana. This and the television distortion made it difficult to identify the speaker, but it was fun for everyone to speculate who it could be. Calling himself the Voice of Survival, he would routinely send out messages calling for people to not listen to the media and to unite in solidarity. Honestly, Lincoln thought the guy was a nutjob who just wanted to stir shit up.
"Just got word that the feds dropped some relief packages into Flores Park," said the Voice. "The liars running the corporate media tell us that we're gonna get our fair share. That more is coming. That's easy for them to say, they're not the ones living in this HELLHOLE!"
Lincoln grimaced as the Voice of Survival's tone grew louder, spooking Lily. Nothing could be done however, so everyone continued to watch the broadcast.
"The truth is, that we've been abandoned!" said the TV jacker. "And no one is coming to save us, so head on over to Flores Park to get that food before the Reapers show up. Voice of Survival out."
Soon a loud discussion erupted among the Loud Family and Clyde as they argued on who should go and get the food and who should stay. Eventually it was decided that Lincoln, Clyde, and Lynn Jr. would be the ones to go. Grabbing some bags in order to carry as much food as possible, they were about to leave when Clyde spoke up.
"Hey can we stop and get something real quick?" he asked. Lincoln and Lynn looked at each other before nodding and turning back to Clyde.
"Yeah just make it quick," said Lynn, "We don't want to be late to get some food." As Clyde and Lynn headed for the stairs, Lincoln instead walked towards the edge of the roof. When everyone noticed they became confused.
"What are you doing, Linky?" asked Leni. Lincoln smiled, turning back to Clyde and Lynn who were just as confused.
"You guys can take the stairs," he said, "I'll take the express elevator." With that Lincoln stepped off the edge of the roof, plummeting several stories to the street. Everyone screamed in alarm as they ran to the roof's edge, looking down expecting to see Lincoln's broken body on the pavement. Instead, they saw Lincoln standing unharmed on the sidewalk below, looking back up at them in amusement.
"Hey what's taking you guys so long!" he yelled up at them. "Come on, get a move on!"
"LINCOLN LOUD!" roared Rita, "YOU WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN, DO YOU HEAR ME!"
Lincoln laughed in amusement as Clyde quickly ran down the stairs. Lynn on the other hand, looked like she was going to take the stairs, before she ran and leapt off the roof with a whooping cry, once again causing the family to scream in shock. Just like her brother before her, Lynn plummeted down to street level, hitting the ground with a thud and bending her knees slightly to absorb the impact.
"That was awesome!" said Lynn as she gave her brother a high five. Soon Clyde left the building gasping for breath and trying to catch his breath. When he saw both Loud siblings waiting for him, he looked back and forth between the siblings and the rooftop in confusion. Eventually he shook his head in amusement before joining the two.
"I gotta get me some super powers." he said. Lincoln patted his friend on the shoulder before they began walking.
"Maybe someday buddy. Maybe someday." said Lincoln.
Lincoln, Lynn, and Clyde quickly made their way down a side alley where to the Loud siblings surprise, he retrieved a gun from under a nearby car.
"Where the hell did you get that from Clyde!" shouted Lynn. Lincoln took a step back, as the last time he was near something with gunpowder, in that case a firecracker, his powers caused it to explode.
"Relax, guys," said Clyde. "I traded someone some tools for it. Figured, since I don't have any powers I need all the help I can get."
The Loud siblings looked at each other with a concerned look, before ultimately conceding. Clyde was right. With the way the city was going anyone without powers was in serious danger. Before too long, the three continued on their way to Flores Park, joining the river of other people heading in that direction. As they got closer they were joined by Ronne Anne, who was also heading to the Park to get some supplies as well as looking out for anyone showing symptoms of the plague or with minor injuries. After her mother's death, Ronnie Anne took her mother's medical equipment and began volunteering to help local doctors take care of the sick and injured.
Soon they made it to Flores Park, and were surprised to see that everyone was standing around at the base of the city's statue of unity, a large golden statue in the middle of Flores Park. The statue was in the vague shape of a man with his arms outstretched. Around the statue was a large curved piece of metal that started at the base and ended near the figure's head.
There high above the gathered crowd was a large crate filled with supplies. It had clearly been parachuted into town but got caught on part of the statue, keeping it out of reach of the people it was intended for.
Lincoln looked up at the dangling crate, already mapping out a path in order to climb as several people began discussing ideas on how to get the supplies down.
"I hate to say it, Linc." said Lynn, "But I think you're the only one who can climb up there no problem."
"That and if you fall you're one of the few people who could survive a fall from that height." added Clyde.
Looking at his sister and best friend in annoyance, Lincoln then stepped forward and began climbing the statue. Using his parkour skills as well as Lola's lessons on balance (Eyes forward. Chin up. Tushie Clenched!) Lincoln quickly scaled the gigantic statue. Soon he was standing across from the crate of supplies. Quickly checking to see how he could knock it down when he noticed that the one of the chains holding it up was rusted. After calling down to the waiting crowd and telling them to back away to avoid being crushed, Lincoln shot a bolt of electricity at the chain destroying it.
The crate fell, landing at the base of the statue with a loud crashing noise as it shattered, causing several smaller boxes of supplies to spill out from the debris. However before anyone could approach the crate, gunshots rang out as several people in red hooded jackets carrying assault rifles stormed into the park.
Shit! Not the Reapers! thought Lincoln. Over the past fourteen days since the quarantine was enacted, numerous gangs had taken over the various districts of Great Lakes City and the one that had taken control of the Art District, where the Casagrandes lived, was a bunch of drug addicts, and petty criminals turned violent called the Reapers.
Lincoln cursed as the crowd of civilians ran in fear, while Lynn began fighting as many of the gangsters as possible while Clyde and Ronnie Anne took shelter, with Clyde returning fire whenever he could. Seeing the Loud girl as the biggest threat, several of the Reapers opened fire, causing Lynn to come to halt as she withstood the barrage of bullets.
Lincoln leapt from the statue, using his momentum and his powers to create a shockwave that sent several Reapers flying when he landed. He then began to shoot out bolts of electricity at the Reapers doing his best to avoid the gunfire as he did so. He still got hit a couple times but his superhuman endurance and accelerated healing kept his wounds from becoming too serious. At one point he found himself backed up against the park's stature surrounded by Reapers. Out of reflex he pushed out with both hands, and was shocked (no pun intended) when a wide burst of electricity launched the Reapers backwards.
With no time to ponder his new skill, Lincoln joined up with Lynn and the two siblings began to push the Reapers out of the park. Relief came quickly when the sound of sirens began to be heard, signaling that the police were on their way.
With the combined efforts of the Loud siblings, Clyde, and the local police, the Reapers were either subdued or retreated empty handed. As the police rounded up as many of the subdued Reapers as they could, Lincoln took a moment to absorb some electricity from a nearby lamppost to heal his wounds and to look at the boxes of supplies. Already the crowd of people had begun to return and several people were beginning to gather the supplies.
There's a lot of food here, he thought, enough to feed my family and the Casagrandes for weeks.
For a brief moment, Lincoln thought of blasting a few people with electricity and claiming all the food for himself. But just as quickly as the thought crossed his mind, it vanished. He chastised himself for even thinking such a thought and began to help out handing out food to the gathered crowd. Soon Ronnie Anne and Clyde joined him, while Lynn began gathering as much food as they needed.
"It's a good thing you guys were here," said Ronnie Anne as they worked. "So many people are going without food because of the quarantine. Add in those gang-banging nutjobs stealing whatever supplies the government sends us and people are becoming more and more desperate."
"I'm just doing what I can," said Lincoln, "Someone has to help them." The two teens looked at each other for a brief moment.
"Hey, Ronnie Anne?" Lincoln began, "I know I've said it before, but I am so so sorry about your mom."
Ronnie Anne grimaced. It was clear that she was still grieving but with everything going on in the city she had pushed her feelings to the side.
"It's fine," said Ronnie Anne. "No one could have predicted what happened, and she'd want me to do my best to help as many people as possible."
Lincoln gave the girl a warm smile, but before they could continue their conversation the sound of static got everyone's attention. Looking off in the direction the noise came from, they could see a large television screen set up on top of a nearby building. As they watched, a broadcast from the Voice of Survival began to play.
Wonder what's going on? Lincoln thought.
"Take a look at this Great Lakes City!" said the Voice. "The footage you see here was taken by a security camera at Great Lakes City Arena near ground zero."
Lincoln's blood went cold when footage of himself moments before the Blast began to play on the screen. His brow furrowed when he noticed that someone had edited out the footage of Lisa and the strange man who had given them the package.
Looking around he immediately noticed several nearby people giving him strange looks. Turning back to the screen he saw that the footage had paused and was zoomed in on his face as the Voice of Survival continued speaking.
"This is the man who destroyed our city! Our lives!" said the Voice. "If someone from your family died, now you know who to blame. If you know anything about this guy let me know cuz we're gonna get the word out on this Terrorist! We're going to make him pay for the trouble he's caused."
With that the broadcast ended. Lincoln looked around. Everyone giving him strange looks before were now giving him looks of pure and utter contempt. Lincoln turned to look at Ronnie Anne and Clyde, and his heart dropped.
Ronnie Anne had a look of betrayal on her face as she stared at the white haired teen. Clyde looked unsure but even he was giving Lincoln an odd glance. Lincoln took a step towards Ronnie Anne, but the girl took a step back, shaking her head in disbelief.
"Lincoln…what did you do?" she asked.
"Ronnie Anne…I…this isn't.." he started. But Ronnie Anne just continued to shake her head before she turned and walked away.
Lincoln thought about going after her, but decided against it. Whatever they had between them was gone. Before he could do anything else, however, Clyde quickly grabbed his shoulder as Lynn ran up to the two boys, a heavy bag of supplies in hand.
"Linc. We gotta go." said Lynn. She turned back to the gathered crowd, drawing Lincoln's attention back to his surroundings. He could tell that things were starting to get dicey as several people began to head towards him, angry expressions on their faces.
"We gotta get back to the others," said Clyde. "Then I think we need to think of ways to get out of the City. I seriously doubt we're going to want to stay here any longer."
Lincoln nodded, and then he, his sister, and his best friend took off running back towards Lori's apartment building. But as they ran, Lincoln took one last look back in the direction Ronnie Anne had gone.
But the girl was long gone.
