Growing up the way he did, it may not be surprising that Harry Potter was into books and research.
For as long as he could remember, Harry sought sanctuary in the library of the school or the local library of Little Whinging whenever he was outside of the house, being a place that seemed to be almost cursed to his cousin Dudley Dursley who would prefer chasing him down than studying. The librarian for the latter location was happy enough to grant him some space since she did not like the Dursleys that much on her end, and Harry was always inquisitive about everything around him. He went to read everything he could in the libraries to pass the time, and absorbed a lot of knowledge from them while doing his homework. It was his way to see the world outside of the town he was stuck in, and to get away from the Dursleys when he could.
It was the knowledge from the books that helped to give him a starting point with the powers that started showing up when he was stressed or in danger. And with practice, he was able to control those powers to keep the Dursleys away from him when he wanted to be safe, and start getting food on the side to feed himself better.
It was the books that made him question everything around him and with his first meeting with the goblins who helped to settle any irregularities with his account and to rescind permissions from people withholding illegal copies of the vault keys along with recalling all heirlooms and money, in the process learning of his family's fortune and legacy.
It was his love for knowledge that got him sorted into the House of Ravenclaw, unknowingly aided by the Sorting Hat that had spells to rig the sorting and was meant to send him to Gryffindor, but saw only the books of the libraries in his head and thus sent him to the house with a more protective guardian than the supposed lioness who was decidedly against him for this.
It was his natural curiosity, keen eyes and scepticism that had him questioning certain events and avoiding a lot of the mess aimed his way throughout his school life, and letting him know that the headmaster did not have the best of intentions towards him. It also helped him to rescue and free his godfather in his first year, rescue the little sister of Ronald Weasley while stopping the Basilisk early in his second year, avoid the mess that was the Triwizard Tournament, and able to deal with Voldemort early in his fifth year, and finally Dumbledore himself in his sixth year.
It was also his more logic-driven mindset that had him doing Runes and Arithmancy instead of Divination as Dumbledore had attempted to force him to study, not seeing the point of taking a subject that required the Inner eye or believing in prophecies. If needed, Arithmancy would do just fine and it was more accurate than a bunch of tea leaves.
But that logic about that branch of magic was challenged a few times.
The first came during his third year when the infamous sherry drunk professor for the subject gave out a prophecy when he was walking past her about a servant escaping his chains to join his master near the end of his third year. A week later, Barty Crouch Senior was reported dead in his house with the Dark Mark over the place, and Dumbledore tried to use this as justification to force himself elsewhere.
The second came from the prophecy that Dumbledore tried to forcefully fulfil on his own terms. It originally started as a fake prophecy that the man had thought up to trick spies into leaking to Voldemort in hopes of getting rid of him, and somewhere along the line, magic decided to turn it into an actual prophecy with a double meaning, one that applied to Dumbledore for the label of the "Dark Lord".
The third and final came from his studies in Arithmancy when Professor Vector talked about the subject of Divination in the fourth year, and how with his own tests, he would discover something that was going to affect him and the rest of the world in a big manner.
And how it would lead to a war between the muggles and the magicals, and the eventual end of the wizarding world.

(27 November 2007)
Harry was really grateful that he had approached headmaster Flitwick for permission to leave early to get to the Ministry.
Despite having done his NEWTs exams in his sixth year, his homework completed well in advance, showing all the necessary paperwork and having permission from Sirius and Flitwick, the Transfiguration Professor Minerva McGonagall was being such a bitch in trying to hold him back while other students were allowed to leave for less reasons, even though she no longer had her position as headmistress. Clearly she was still carrying a grudge over him not being in Gryffindor like his parents and the fact that he had not followed Dumbledore like some cult member, and instead managed to get him arrested because of the man trying to control and later attack him for ending Voldemort's reign early, along with him getting her to lose her other positions with valid reasons. She kept trying to deduct points and assign him detentions to get him into missing his appointment in a manner very reminiscent of the late Severus Snape, some were gossiping if the spirit of the hated Potions Master had managed to possess her despite her having done this over the years while the man was still alive.
On his part, Harry was more than happy to piss off the woman who kept listening to Dumbledore despite all the evidence against him and kept finding excuses to screw him over in different manners like attempting to annex his inheritance. It said something when both Professors Flitwick and Sprout joined forces to effectively warn her off during his early years, and when Filius took over the headmaster position, he made it clear that she either keep her opinions or be kicked out where the DMLE were waiting.
Harry shook his head and continued to head inside for the task he was contemplating. A quick trip on the elevator and Harry found himself in the Department of Mysteries that had seen better days and one cloaked Unspeakable waiting for him. With a gesture, Harry followed the silent wizard through different corridors and into a room where the director was waiting for him. "Leave us." His guide bowed his/her head and left the room, leaving them in silence for a moment before the director reached to remove his own hood.
"Hello, Harry." The sandy-haired man greeted Harry with a smile, something that often confused others since he was reportedly older than Albus and supposedly older than Griselda Marchbanks. "I see you have arrived unscathed."
"Not for the lack of trying from others, that much I can say, Saul." Harry took the offered seat.
"Let me guess. Minerva?" Saul Croaker shook his head at the idea of the woman who had fallen so far. It was a shame in his opinion with how the transfiguration professor was this devoted to a man who had revealed in his trial that he only cared for himself and for those who "shared his ideals" aka followed his every order like damn sheep.
"She is still holding a grudge over the old goat's arrest, and she is not the only one to do it." Harry huffed at the stupidity. "It's not my fault they are such sheep in following the man. I mean, the Weasleys were once his biggest followers but are now thinking properly for themselves with Arthur now getting more money."
"It is more like you have proven yourself more trustworthy by saving the only daughter while messing with Lucius Malfoy, helping to bankroll the twins for their joke shop and curtailing their pranking behaviour from going out of hand, directed the third son to a position practically tailored for his talents while helping him propose to his sweetheart, helping the youngest son get out of the shadows of his brothers, saved Arthur from the snake attack at the Ministry, saved the entire family from the Death Eaters' attack at the Burrow, and giving them back both the wealth and seats." Saul broke down the real reasons for the Weasleys being Harry's main supporters. "On the other end of the scale, Dumbledore did not protect Ginny from being possessed by a horcrux, did not increase the power of the wards when the Dementors were around, tried to get you involved with the Triwizard Tournament, neglected to give the family the means to save Arthur, and trying to perform Line Theft with them as his unsuspecting proxies. You even saved Ronald Weasley from getting potioned by Hermione Granger."
Harry waved it off. "Ultimately it is their actions that decide it. Very few of the others did the same thing. McGonagall seemed to be channelling Snape with her attempts to get me in detention, all because I pointed out that she was not helping the students with how busy she was with her other positions. Her own house students did the rest."
"Well, enough of that. That woman is a lost cause, and you did not come all the way to be ranting at the stupidity of the fools in this country." Saul leaned forward with the smile now gone in place for a more serious expression. "You had something you wanted to be confirmed based on what you have seen previously." In reply, Harry reached into his pocket to pull out a shrunken folder that returned to the normal size and handed it to Saul. The older wizard pulled out the documents and a pair of glasses to read with, taking the time to do so while Harry waited patiently with his eyes moving about the room to see what knick-knacks he had.
It was a few minutes later that Saul lowered the last document on the table, removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I can see why you requested my presence."
"And your conclusion?" Harry's question got Saul to look at him for a moment before he nodded as if to consider an answer.
"You might want to follow me." Getting up from the seat and waiting for Harry to do the same, the director led him out of the office and to another round of corridors that made his head spin from the random directions, until they stopped in front of a non descript door. Saul placed a hand on it, and Harry could hear the locking mechanisms moving before the door opened for them to enter. Once inside, the door shut behind them, leaving them in momentary darkness before a light appeared from the ceiling to light the room up and to show the stone monument that towered above them.
"This is?" Harry looked at the carvings that were littering the surface, recognizing some from his lessons in Hogwarts.
"One of the smaller stone tablets that were found roughly 300 years ago in the highlands of Scotland." Saul answered as he walked forward, and Harry had to raise an eyebrow at the mention that this was the 'smaller' tablet. "We had been deciphering the symbols and got some information about the Hebrides around 77 AD. These tablets are treasure troves of knowledge to help us understand more about the ancient clans that existed before the Arthurian Era, and what could have been the actual history of the Arthurian Period. But for this particular tablet, we believe this was a transcript to write down possible prophecies from their period, and thus far it has been accurate."
"So they did not use prophecy orbs back then?" Harry crossed his arms while looking at the tablet and trying to connect them to others he had read up on.
"Glass was not readily available and there was a bit of bias with the church at the time." Saul went to one side of the tablet and pointed to the carving of a sword. "This bit speaks of the time when Arthur would pull out the sword from the stone." He then pointed to several carvings that included some broken parts. "Here talked about the collapse of the Arthurian legacy." He moved further down and pointed to another set while looking at Harry. "This part was one of the last entries and it involves you dealing with Voldemort."
"What?" Harry blinked as he stepped forward to look closer. While some of the etchings were faded from years of weather damage, there were still symbols he could read partially, and there was the carving of a lightning bolt striking a skull with a snake coming out of it. "You have got to be kidding me."
"I kid you not." Saul let out a snort at that point. "If I may comment, the people back then had better Seers than Trelawney since these are scarily accurate right down to the last detail based on all that had happened."
"Okay, so they knew their divination well." Harry looked at Saul at that point. "What does this have to do with my research?" In reply, Saul pointed at one of the last set of carvings near the bottom, which somehow included Mayan carvings.
"Notice them?" Saul asked rhetorically. "The tablets showed multiple symbols that came from other countries or civilizations before they were wiped out, suggesting some of the people may have passed over here in the past. This entry talks about a calamity that would cleanse the taint of the world to bring about a new rebirth. There are other bits but one thing is consistent when checked with actual Mayan tablets and other prophecies from different countries, and now including your research." Saul gave a very grim smile. "Our world is dying, and we will be at the brink of it in the coming years." Harry could only close his eyes to deal with the migraine that came on.
He had hoped he was just being paranoid with all that had happened, and that what he had done with his Arithmancy was a mistake. But no matter how many times he changed the variables, the results always stayed constant, and Saul just confirmed his fears.
The magical world that they knew of would fall in the year 2012, the same year the Mayans had predicted the end of the world many millenniums ago. And they only had a little over five years to save as many people as they could.
Right now, he really wished for a drink.
Author's Notes:
Since I had written the story idea about a post war Harry removing magic from the world, I had another idea brewing but more in line of the 2012 Mayan prophecy and the film inspired by it. There may be elements a little similar to a story I read a couple of years back, only thing I recalled was Harry being an arrogant blood bigot with a bad Dumbledore and Hermione helping the muggles to wage a war with the magicals all because they offend her senses. That one was a Daphne pairing if I remembered.
For this, I have no idea the pairing, but I did put in a challenge stating all the Weasleys must be good people.
