Chapter 2
Nuclear Submarine Disaster
The nuclear-powered Soviet submarine 'Black Heart' moved slowly beneath the depths of the ocean, with its sonar pinging quietly. 'Black Heart' had been in active service for a year, manufactured on New Year's Eve, 1985, and put into service in the second quarter of 1986.
Its purpose was to explore the ocean, gather intelligence, and function without being fitted for war. So far, in the early stages, the submarine had performed very well, and brought back valuable intelligence for Moscow.
'Black Heart' was operated by seven-to-ten men with two KGB officers aboard, the two officers' mission was to make sure there were no signs of treason, almost mirroring scenarios where SS officers were posted aboard German U-Boats during the war.
Captain Vladkov Soltovetsky was a decorated submarine commander, who'd been in the navy for 10 years, and he'd followed in the footsteps of his father, Yosef, who'd sank 30 U-Boats more so than any other wartime submarine commander. Vladkov was not a man of war, and preferred manning weaponless ships.
"Captain Soltovetsky!" A submarine officer called, he was one of the people monitoring the Geiger counter and sonar as the radar started beeping like mad, "We are picking up a high concentration of radioactivity, probably from American nuclear testing, something radioactive seems to be close by and we request permission to investigate."
Soltovetsky got on the radio, "Radiation Department, do you have anything to report?"
"No clue, captain. It's like maybe another nuclear submarine is close by and it's covered in a high concentration of Level 5 Radiation." The RD replied.
"Level 5 radiation is the most lethal, if the radiation were that high, it would be extremely dangerous and somehow cause the ocean to boil and become radioactive."
"Captain?" Private Bonchetsky asked, "Should we go to condition red, and assume battle stations?"
Soltovetsky's response was firm, "Nyet. We are not armed. The best option is to call for reinforcements, maybe radio Moscow for an attack sub and they will deal with it. Option B is to call in the air force, assuming we have an aircraft carrier in the area. Until back up comes, our best course is to analyze the situation."
"Captain, this is the radiation observatory and scanning department." Sakowski Sochaki reported over the radio. "We've been scanning the area, and we just picked up an object on our screens... ITS SOME KIND OF GIANT DINOSAUR AND ITS HEADING THIS WAY, RIGHT TOWARD US!"
The captain turned to his crew, "Send out an S.O.S and prepare to abandon ship, all hands. We are under attack!"
Just as the submarine crew was sending out radio messages and getting ready to abandon ship, a violent explosion rocked 'Black Heart'. Water began to flood the room and people screamed, sparks flew and fires ignited. The last thing the crew could hear as they went down with the submarine was a loud, earthshattering roar...
12 years later
1999
The green American intelligence helicopter flew over the Sakuyama region where the Soviet submarine Black Heart last transmitted its current position before disappearing. Rumors had been circling for a decade that a giant sea monster had been in the area, and was responsible for the submarine disappearances and sinking ships.
Today, the United States Navy had taken up the task of investigating the mysterious events while looking into a distress call from their own subs that had recently vanished in the region.
On board the helicopter, Doctor Baker, a man in his 50s wearing his laboratory coat, held onto the Geiger counter as he used it to scan for any signs of radio activity as Col. Davison manned the helicopter's controls and kept it aloft so it would not crash into the water.
However, the Geiger counter was not the only thing Doctor Baker held on to in one hand, he held a camera in the other, mostly to catch footage the scenery or snap photos of anything they found. As they hovered over the Sakuyama coast, Baker and Davison spotted a red spot below in the ocean, just one mile away from the shore of Sakuyama island.
"I think we just found a hotspot, doctor." Davison declared, "What should we do?"
"Let's go have a closer look." The doctor suggested, curiosity getting the best of him. "I think that's probably what's left of the HMS Roosevelt. Whatever's down there, it's causing my Geiger counter to go haywire and deserves coverage."
As he was speaking, his yellow Geiger counter box's meter was going into the red zone and its scanner hose was making all kinds of crazy noises. Davison steered the chopper down, very carefully. But just as he was steering down, the bubbling intensified and a huge tail shot out of the water.
"What is that?!" Doctor Baker exclaimed.
"I dunno, doc." Davison replied, pulling up a bit just in case the tail emerged again, "What do you make of… Wait. Something's coming up!"
The Geiger counter started beeping like mad, which meant that the source of the radiation had been discovered. And, Davison was right. Through the bubbling, a black mass was emerging, and the huge creature was becoming visibly clearer.
"ITS GODZILLA!" Davison shrieked.
And so, it was. But it wasn't the same monster that had been destroyed by the Oxygen Destroyer in 1954, it was a new one, and this Godzilla was 50 meters taller with darker skin, orange eyes, jagged black-white fins, and a burlier body. The beast lifted his head, and let out a roar that sent shivers up the spines of those who heard it.
"We better return to base, doctor." Davison stammered anxiously, "That guy looks ugly and I do not wanna get fried by his nuclear ray. What do you think?"
Dr. Baker had been snapping photos and taping the whole scene. "I think I agree with you, Davison." The scientist replied, "Return to base, get in touch with the commander and contact the White House as well as the press."
The helicopter turned, and flew towards the RSS Washington, and the battleships surrounding it. Godzilla turned his head, and swam towards the nearby ships as his dorsal plates resonated with nuclear energy. On the bridge of the Battleship Hawaii, Commander J. Kyle spotted the approaching Kaiju through his binoculars.
"ENEMY INBOUND!" He shouted, "BATTLE STATIONS! NOW!"
RSS Washington commander Jack L. Hawkings stepped back, having never expected to see Godzilla for himself. And yet, the beast was real, and the commander was witnessing history. Pilots scrambled to their jets, and took to the sky, while battleship gunners began manning the turrets.
"Look at the size of that thing." Air Force pilot Captain McGregor exclaimed.
"Cut the chatter, McGregor." Air Force Lieutenant Hayden chided, "Accelerate to attack speed, LET'S GIVE THIS BAD BOY SOME HECK!"
"OPEN FIRE!" John Kyle shouted.
The fighter jets swarmed Godzilla, firing their payload of bullets at the beast, and the battleship batteries roared to life. Gunfire and explosions shook the sea, and combat planes streaked around the head of the leviathan, with the guns aimed for the head. Godzilla snarled, and swatted at a jet fighter, sending it crashing into the sea in a mass of fire.
Godzilla growled menacingly, and began channeling every ounce of radiation in his body. The fins upon his back glowed a light blue, and the irradiated reptile opened his maw, spewing out a stream of blue energy towards the fleet. The RSS Washington erupted in a ball of fire, and taking Commander Jack Lee Washington with it.
Battleship Hawaii, and Nevada II followed suit, and with Fleet Commander John Kyle on the former saluting grimly. The blast consumed him, alongside the rest of his fellow Americans, a hero to the United States like the others who'd fallen in battle.
Captain McGregor watched from inside his plane, and stared at Godzilla with shock. The scaly beast turned towards the attacking fighters, and let out another stream of atomic fire. Balls of explosions lit the air, with bits of flaming metal flying, as the pilots braced themselves before the flames of death took them.
Smoke rose into the sky, generated by the flames of what remained of the decimated navy vessels. Godzilla threw back his head, and let out a howl that shook the world, declaring his dominance over anyone who opposed his might...
