Chapter 3

A Fateful Convergence on Oshima

Mount Yakasawara, one of Japan's most exotic and well-known locations in the country.

The region was peaceful, as birds nested in the trees near the hillside, and the light of the sun gleamed over the rocky peaks.

People rarely visited the mountain, and tourism in the area had never been considered. There had been signs of radiation in the area for the past thirty years, but it was unknown if the radioactivity was in a safe zone. No nuclear tests had taken place here, which usually meant that the mountain was safe.

Except, the source of the radiation was known, and it emanated from within the cave, where a mighty creature had been slumbering undisturbed.

A growl carried forth from the caves and echoed through the mountainside. Yellow eyes lit up in the shadows, and the ground quaked as a large dark-gray turtle with claws and fangs emerged from the cavern it had called home for years.

Gamera stared at the bright blue sky, and the goliath opened its mouth, letting out a roar that shook the hills.

He would often depart the region in search of fire and radiation to feed upon, whenever a sense of hunger arose. Whenever he slumbered, Gamera sought to preserve the strength he had. Gamera possessed the ability to detect sources of fire and radiation, even from the greatest of distances, no matter where he was in the world.

The turtle growled again, and closed his eyes. He could sense a strong concentration of radioactivity somewhere far away, and it came with amounts of fire.

Gamera perked his head up, and slowly retracted his head and limbs into the confines of his shell.

After so long, the mighty turtle was ready to feast upon flame and radiation once more. Gamera tucked himself in, and jets of fire erupted from the holes where his limbs had retracted. Flames illuminated the cave, and scorched the stone around Gamera, who began to float off the ground.

His body rotated slowly in the air, and hovered above Mount Yakasawara. The jets erupting from Gamera's body intensified, and the turtle goliath spun and spun until he was flying over the Japanese landscape.

And to the eyes of those who watched, all the people could see was a UFO.

Oshima Island, a peaceful sect of land off the shores of mainland Japan, identified by the smoking volcanic peak of Mount Mihara. The volcano hadn't erupted in a long time, and the tourists and residents upon the island had little to worry about.

Streams of lava rarely poured forth from within Mt. Mihara, and the citizens of Oshima knew nothing but peace, and no one gave thought to troubles from intense earthquakes to dangerous monsters making landfall.

In the late hours of the afternoon, middle-aged Makiken Yanagoro stood upon the Jatosama Village observation tower as he observed the ocean through his binoculars. Seagulls cried as they flew overhead, and a dog barked somewhere in the streets below.

Makiken surveyed the sea, and gazed across the horizon. Just then, he spotted a large black shape moving through the water towards Oshima. The islander took a moment, and realized that he was staring upon a gigantic dark-skinned dinosaur with fangs and bulky skin.

He lowered the binoculars, and his heart pounded with terror, knowing what was about to happen.

"Godzilla..." He breathed with dread, and Makiken recognized the monster.

The fear-stricken village resident removed himself from the observation deck, ran to the closest alarm bell tower, and picked up a hammer. The middle-aged Japanese citizen smacked the bell as hard as possible, and the tolling rang through Jatosama Village.

As someone who grew up in the Japanese mainland, Makiken had lived to witness the events of Godzilla's first attack. He was eleven years old when the beast ravaged Tokyo, and set fire to the city.

Forty-five years later, the nightmare was back, and it was starting on an island. Just like the last time.

People heard the clangs of the alarm bell, and everyone in the village scrambled, determined to find safety. Makiken continued to hit the alarm, right up to when the sound of distant footfalls filled his ears.

The radioactive behemoth had made landfall, and Godzilla was advancing towards Jatosama Village. Seagulls nesting on the beach shrieked, and flew into the sky. Godzilla's advance slowed, and he looked up. The beast silently watched the birds flying away, and the sound of chirping filled his ears.

His march continued, with trees crunching beneath the mighty kaiju's feet. Godzilla's ominous shadow loomed over the village, and the ground rumbled with the King of The Monsters' every step.

Godzilla's mouth opened, and the irradiated reptile's roar quaked the earth, and shook the peak of Mount Mihara. Glass windows shattered, and people cried with fear.

Waves of terror swept across Jatosama like a tsunami of doom, and Makiken rang the alarm once more. He dropped the hammer, and ran for his life.

The enlarged dinosaur growled, and took another step forward, smashing through a building with his bare feet. Godzilla's tail slammed into the ground, disturbing the earth, and the creature snarled viciously. Beneath his feat, the village crumbled to smithereens, and lives were snuffed out in moments.

Just then, a faint and high-pitched sound carried across the air, and Godzilla raised his head to the sky above. A half-black UFO swooped over the landscape of Oshima Island, and glided towards the towering titan.

He arched back, with his dorsal plates lighting up vibrantly.

The towering reptile's maw opened, and another stream of fiery blue energy shot into the air towards the incoming mass, with Godzilla concentrating the radioactive energies within his body.

An explosion lit the air, the great beam of nuclear power slammed into the UFO, and the approaching mass crashed to the ground. The gargantuan goliath roared again, proclaiming his dominance, and the fallen UFO began to move and took on a new shape.

Godzilla stared back into the face of the titanic turtle, and Gamera could see a hint of radioactive malice in his eyes.
