Chapter 8

Preparing for The Worst

At the United States embassy in Tokyo, a uniformed secretary was organizing files, and filing them away into drawers to ensure that all was tidy. Moments later, the phone started ringing, prompting the secretary to put down one of the file folders as he called for his boss.

Donn Marts, one of the United States' top political ambassadors, stepped out of the nearby study, and picked up the telephone firmly as his secretary stepped aside.

"U.S Embassy in Tokyo, this is Mr. Marts speaking." Donn said, and he frowned, "What? Eight minutes ago? I see. Yes, this is terrible. Have you informed the president? I'll call the Prime Minister as soon as I can."

He lowered the phone, and processed the news with an uneasy frown. "Godzilla..." Donn said ominously, "I just can't believe it, and I was hoping my first month here would conclude without incident..."

Prime Minister Fujeta sat at his desk, signing his last document for the evening, as classical music played over a radio. After today, he hoped for a well-deserved vacation from politics the next day. Every politician needed a break after a while.

The nearby phone began ringing, and Fujeta set aside his pen before helping himself to the call.

"Hai?" The prime minister said firmly, "Prime minister speaking."

"Mr. Prime Minister, this is the ambassador. We have an emergency." Donn Marts said over the phone, "We just received an urgent call from Okinawa. One of our navy bases was just attacked, and, according to reports, the base was attacked by... a giant monster."

"A giant monster?" Fujeta questioned.

"It was him, sir. It was... Godzilla."

Fujeta's face grew pale, and he was silent for a long minute. The prime minister knew who the monster was, and he was familiar with what had happened in 1954. "Where is he now?" He asked firmly.

"W-Well... We think he's heading for the mainland, towards Tokyo..."

His heart thumped intensely, and Fujeta gave the ambassador his well-wishes. The prime minister set down the phone, and took a moment to think about what was going on. His vacation was about to be severely delayed, and the return of Godzilla could mean only one thing...

Japan was in danger, and lives were on the line. However, he didn't know when the beast would make landfall. It had been decades since Godzilla's last attack, and no one had expected the monster to return. Gamera, on the other hand, had been a different story.

But with all of the nuclear tests and the nuclear incidents that had taken place, the rise of another Godzilla after the nightmare of 1954 had been inevitable.

Fujeta stood up, his hands shaking and his knees wobbling. If Godzilla was on his way at this hour, then how long would it be until he made landfall, and was there enough time to get everyone out of the city?

While the prime minister contemplated the situation, a pair of dock workers at Tokyo Harbor were in the process of settling down after hours of work, and helping themselves to a relaxing meal. One man turned on the radio, allowing the others to listen to the evening news.

Another man played a flute, and one of the workers pounded on a wooden drum, making a little music to occupy the group. Just then, odd static sounds filled the radio's speakers, and the voice of the news broadcaster faded out.

Moments later, the signal cleared up, and a new voice resonated from the radio; "We interrupt your program to bring you breaking news. A United States navy base in Okinawa has been attacked by a dinosaur-like monster with the power to breathe fire. According to observers, the monster has been identified as Godzilla."

Panic set in among the dock workers, and the report continued, "Following the attack, Godzilla vanished into the ocean, and it is believed he is heading for the Japanese mainland next."

"We should run." Achacki suggested.

"If Godzilla's alive, and he's coming for Japan. He's probably close." Kentaku nodded grimly, "I bet he's about to make landfall right now."

"Agreed. I'm not going to wait until he lands." Paritaka quipped nervously.

The dock workers began clearing the area around them, and began running with one of them staring at the sea for a moment. An uneasy silence settled upon the harbor, and the ocean shifted calmly while a few seagulls flew over. A buoy dinged as it floated upon the water, and a ship blew its horn in the distance...
