Chapter 9
The Leviathan's Landfall
Fukushima, many miles away from Tokyo.
While the Japanese government had stayed away from the nuclear weapons business, nuclear energy was still important. Radiation provided energy in all sorts of ways when utilized correctly, and had the potential to be used in a productive manner. The nuclear plant of Fukushima served the purpose of making good use of radioactive energy.
However, it wasn't easy to run a nuclear plant with creatures capable of feeding on fire and radiation on the loose in the world. A lone guard wandered the grounds of the facility, conducting his nightly duties, and silently observed the sky.
The guard was aware of the existence of the Atlantean beast known as Gamera, and he'd seen him flying over the area before. And yet, he didn't believe the titanic turtle would come down to absorb the radiation generated by the plant's reactors.
He even doubted the place would serve as the site of a nuclear disaster, similar to the Chernobyl incident of the 1980s. The reactors were stable, and there hadn't been any signs of meltdown at the moment.
A bright light in the sky perked the guard's attention, and he peeled his eyes to see what it was. His heart thumped, and sweat rolled down his forehead in moments. A whooshing sound filled his ears, and the shape of a scaly UFO came into view as it glided towards the facility.
Gamera had come.
The guard ran as fast as he could, leaving his post behind, and a pair of on-duty security guards scrambled. A siren began blaring, and the gigantic turtle landed near the plant's gates. Gamera raised his head and unsheathed his limbs, slowly rising to his feet, and he lumbered towards the closest nuclear reactor within his proximity.
His feet smashed through a pair of energy conductors, and sparks exploded across the ground. Gamera roared, and slashed at the reactor, causing radioactive steam to rise into the air.
The turtle's mouth opened, and a stream of fire tricked outward, licking the damaged reactor's exterior. Explosions shook the Fukushima plant, and Gamera stepped into the smoldering ruin of what remained of the reactor, taking in the radioactivity as it leaked out.
Gamera opened his mouth, and he began to absorb the fires from the explosions that illuminated the area, along with the radiation that continued to seep out of the reactor.
And with each consumption of fire and radioactive energy he took, Gamera felt his strength rejuvenate. Radiation coursed through his body, and the flames swept into his lungs, empowering the ancient fire-breathing turtle with all of the energy he needed.
Even on the darkest of evenings, there was no rest for the Japanese Coast Guard.
Gleaming bright lights illuminated the surface of the bay as patrol boats maneuvered around the vicinity of Tokyo Harbor, with every man available and prepared to do their duty. Keeping the bay area safe and clean was important, but to be alert for a sign of danger to the mainland was another major priority.
The sound of motorboat engines rumbled across the water, and resonated upon the nearest dock. Every officer kept their eye on the ocean, and operated the searchlights carefully, remaining as calm as possible.
For the moment, the bay area was at peace, just like the evening air. And yet, the peace was about to be short-lived.
Just a bird's glide away from the shoreline around Tokyo Harbor, the water began churning and blue lights flashed beneath the surface. The sea shifted, and a gigantic scaly tail shot up, sending water in various directions, before dipping back into the deep blue.
A large shadow formed under the water, moving towards the harbor, like a phantom that had risen out of Davy Jones' Locker. The water continued to shift, and the lights flashed again, before the waves parted as the radioactive behemoth known as Godzilla surfaced with his eyes on Tokyo.
He moved towards the harbor, and the coast guard took notice to his arrival. All lights moved in Godzilla's direction, and reflected off his scaly visage. The beast snarled furiously, and made a beeline for the coast guard.
Terror washed over every sailor and officer in moments, and they deactivated the boats' searchlights before racing to the mainland with their patrol duty concluded. However, a few coast guard members took up their weapons, and made an effort to combat the approaching kaiju.
Gunfire lit up the bay, and the titanic dinosaur growled before smashing through a pair of patrol boats. A flash of blue light washed over his back, and his mouth slowly opened as Godzilla fired a ray of atomic energy towards the dockyard.
Parked freighters melted, and Tokyo Harbor erupted in an explosive haze. Oil drums burst, cranes collapsed, and shipping vessels sank. Godzilla roared, and inched closer towards the shore. He stepped onto the dockyard, with the ground cracking beneath his feet, and the earth shook with his footsteps.
He looked ahead, seeing the skyline of Tokyo, and marched forward, smashing through a pile of shipping containers before crushing a harbor warehouse in his path.
Sirens began wailing in the distance, echoing across every district in Tokyo, and a group of people near the dock area began fleeing as soon as they spotted Godzilla. Patches of pavement cracked, and glass windows shuddered.
Godzilla's tail rose high, and smashed the ground under its weight as it came down, sending dust into the air. A fire hydrant exploded under the titanic beast's heel, and a torrent of water burst out, drenching the irradiated beast's foot as he marched past. He opened his maw, and let out another ominous roar.
Beady eyes gleamed with the desire for destruction, and his dorsal plates flashed. Godzilla opened his mouth, and took a moment to unleash another blast of nuclear fire upon the surrounding city block.
Nearby buildings erupted in a mushroom cloud of fire, street lamps sparked, and power lines shorted out as Godzilla trampled through them. He stared down upon Tokyo, and bellowed a monstrous roar that drowned out the screams of the evacuees and the howl of the alarm.
Many streets away, the lights of Tokyo began shutting down. Neon lights, street lights, vehicle lights, it all blacked out, even as Godzilla pressed forward through the city streets. Beneath his heel, the world trembled, and unfortunate souls were lost to darkness.
