Chapter 13: Starlight Carnival: One-Winged Angel
Sonic skidded to a halt as he entered the neon-lit center of Starlight Carnival, and Carol floated down beside him, landing gracefully. Before them, under the glow of vibrant lights, a fierce battle was already unfolding. Cloud and Sephiroth were locked in an intense clash, each swing of their swords colliding with an impact that echoed across the plaza. Cloud's Buster Sword came down in a powerful arc, but Sephiroth countered effortlessly with his Masamune, the legendary sword seeming to move as an extension of his will.
Cloud's face was set with determination, his every move sharp and focused. Sephiroth, on the other hand, wore a faint, almost dismissive smirk, as if amused by the struggle. The two warriors moved with a velocity that made their swords blur, creating streaks of light with each swing and clash.
"Gotta admit, that's one intense showdown," Sonic remarked, seemingly impressed.
Carol nodded, the glow of her cosmic energy simmering around her.
"Yeah, Cloud really went all out following this guy here. Guess he wasn't exaggerating about Sephiroth," she replied.
Just then, the PA system crackled to life, and Eggman's voice filled the air, thick with mock enthusiasm.
"Attention, dear guests! You're in for a treat as we present a special attraction—the grudge match of the century! Witness the clash of two legends: Cloud Strife versus Sephiroth, the One-Winged Angel! Brought to you by Eggman's Cola Supreme, because nothing says 'epic showdown' like a refreshing soda!"
"Only Egghead could make a life-or-death battle sound like a commercial," Sonic groaned, rolling his eyes.
"He's really got his priorities straight, doesn't he?" Carol retorted with a smirk.
In the center of the plaza, Cloud lunged forward, attempting to break through Sephiroth's defenses with a powerful overhead strike. But Sephiroth sidestepped with eerie ease, bringing his Masamune up in a sharp counter that Cloud barely managed to deflect. Sparks flew as their swords clashed, and Sephiroth's mocking smile grew wider.
"Still chasing after me, Cloud? How long will you cling to this hollow vendetta?" Sephiroth taunted, his voice a smooth, chilling tone.
Cloud gritted his teeth, pushing back against Sephiroth's blade with a surge of strength.
"As long as it takes to put an end to you!" he declared.
Sephiroth chuckled, his grip on his sword unwavering.
"Your resolve is admirable, if pointless," he mocked.
Eggman's voice returned over the PA, this time sounding even more gleeful.
"And let's not forget, folks—today's main event is brought to you by Eggman's Cola Supreme! Available at every refreshment stand in the park. It's 'supremely' refreshing!"
"Does this guy ever let up?" Carol sighed, shaking her head in disbelief.
Sonic snorted.
"Nope... He's got that whole 'evil monologue vibe' going on," he admitted.
Just as they spoke, Cloud forced Sephiroth back with a powerful swing. The two paused, circling each other as if locked in an unspoken conversation, their tension simmering.
Sonic's fingers tapped at his side, itching to get involved.
"Alright, I think we've seen enough. Let's give Cloud a hand," he said, eyes narrowing.
Carol nodded, her cosmic energy flaring to life.
"Good call. Eggman brought Sephiroth here to deal with us anyway. Let's settle this," she remarked sternly.
At that moment, Sephiroth turned his gaze toward them, his eyes as sharp as steel. His smirk faded, replaced by an expression of cold, mocking disdain.
"So, you're the ones Eggman spoke of. The pests, Sonic and... the famed Captain Marvel." Sephiroth said, his voice was as smooth as it was venomous, each word dripping with contempt.
"And you're Sephiroth," Carol replied coolly. "Can't say I'm impressed by someone who takes orders from an evil scientist running an amusement park though."
"Orders?" Sephiroth scoffed. "I do not take orders, least of all from the likes of Eggman. His request was... amusing, nothing more."
Cloud stepped forward, his grip tightening on his Buster Sword.
"Enough, Sephiroth. Leave them alone. This is between you and me," he shouted.
Sephiroth's gaze flicked back to Cloud, a cruel glint in his eyes.
"Ah, Cloud... Always so determined. Always so predictable." He raised his blade, tilting his head toward Carol. "But this... this 'hero' interests me. I've heard tales of your so-called strength across worlds." He took a slow step forward, his voice taunting. "Show me... is it truly as formidable as they say?"
Carol met his gaze, her own eyes blazing with fierce energy.
"I don't know what kind of 'tales' you've heard, but I'm not here to entertain you," she countered.
Sonic stepped up, smirking as he jabbed a thumb at his chest.
"If it's a challenge you want, you've got us both to deal with. Hope you're ready for a real fight," he taunted, his confidence unshakable.
Sephiroth regarded him with a raised eyebrow, his lips curving into a dark smile.
"I've heard tales of your strength, Sonic," Sephiroth drawled. "But tell me... is it you, or perhaps your counterpart, Shadow, who truly wields power?"
Sonic's smirk flickered, his eyes narrowing.
"Shadow's strong, sure. But if you're looking for a fight, I'm more than enough to take you on," he replied, his tone bristling with competitive energy. "Not that I need the comparison."
Sephiroth's smile widened, an icy glint in his eyes as he tilted his head.
"I wonder... Or could it be that Shadow left a stronger impression? Perhaps even more... worthy?"
Sonic's grin didn't falter, but Carol, standing nearby, couldn't help noticing the slight clench of his fists. She cast him a knowing glance as if silently urging caution.
"Shadow's impressive, yeah, but he and I have gone toe-to-toe before," Sonic shot back, unable to resist the jab. "Let's just say I came out on top. And as for you... well, I'm not afraid of some guy with a fancy sword and a bad attitude, Sephy."
Cloud's eyes flickered with something like exasperation at Sonic's nickname, but he kept silent, his focus trained on Sephiroth, ready to step in. Carol, meanwhile, cast Sonic a sidelong glance, sensing his words might be digging him into a hole.
Sephiroth chuckled, low and menacing, as he took a slow step forward, his gaze locking onto Sonic's.
"'Sephy'? How quaint," he mocked, his tone chillingly calm. "But tell me, little blue hedgehog... what chance does a fleeting spark like you have against the depths of true darkness?"
Sonic shrugged, his grin broadening even as he felt the ominous aura emanating from Sephiroth.
"Guess there's only one way to find out, right? And all this talk about darkness?" Sonic quipped with a smirk. "You sound like you've been rehearsing lines from a bad movie villain."
Sephiroth's eyes narrowed, the dangerous gleam intensifying as he extended his sword, its tip pointed directly at Sonic.
"Mock me all you want. Soon, you'll understand that darkness is not a game, and I... am not to be trifled with," he warned coldly.
Carol unfolded her arms and took a step forward.
"Alright, Sonic, maybe we focus on the fight instead of giving him free banter practice?" she suggested firmly.
"Yeah, yeah," Sonic replied, shooting her a playful grin before turning back to Sephiroth, unfazed. "Just trying to keep things fun, Danvers."
Cloud watched the exchange with wary eyes, his voice low but firm.
"Sephiroth doesn't need encouragement, Sonic. He's dangerous enough without goading," he affirmed.
But Sephiroth seemed to thrive on the tension, his smirk lingering as he prepared to engage.
"Then by all means... come, heroes. Show me your strength," he declared.
With that, he launched forward, his blade slicing through the air with deadly precision.
Sephiroth
Battle Music: One-Winged Angel - Final Fantasy VII
Sonic barely had time to react as Sephiroth lunged toward him, his Masamune slicing through the air with terrifying speed. The hedgehog dashed aside, narrowly avoiding the lethal blade, feeling the rush of air as it sliced past.
"Whew, close one!" Sonic grinned, skidding to a stop. "Gonna have to be quicker than that, Sephy!"
Sephiroth's gaze narrowed, clearly unfazed.
"Fascinating. You seem unafraid, even as you teeter on the edge of oblivion."
"Yeah, oblivion's kinda overrated," Sonic quipped. "But thanks for the pep talk."
Carol shot forward, fists glowing with cosmic energy, taking advantage of the opening. She swung at Sephiroth, aiming a series of punches at his side, but the swordsman parried each blow with a practiced ease, his movements fluid and precise. He redirected her final strike with a flick of his wrist, sending her flying back a few feet before she stabilised in the air.
Cloud saw the opportunity and leapt in, his Buster Sword meeting Sephiroth's Masamune in a clash that echoed through the carnival. Sparks flew as the two warriors locked eyes, each pressing against the other's strength. Sephiroth tilted his head, a faint smirk on his lips.
"Still trying, Cloud?" Sephiroth taunted, pushing him back with a single, forceful swing. "When will you realise that you'll never reach me?"
Cloud scowled, but before he could respond, Sonic zipped in from the side, launching a Homing Attack that forced Sephiroth to pivot and deflect.
"Mind if I cut in?" Sonic grinned mid-spin, bouncing off Sephiroth and landing nearby, his eyes catching sight of a capsule. Inside was a bright Pink Wisp, ready to be rescued.
Sephiroth barely spared him a glance before raising his Masamune, his voice dripping with disdain.
"You're truly persistent, you blue pest" he remarked coldly.
Sonic ran forward and smashed the capsule, with the Wisp's energy flowed into him.
Suddenly, the bodiless announcer's voice bellowed, "SPIKES!"
A jolt of power surged through Sonic, his body transforming into a spiky, armoured form with sharp pink quills jutting out in all directions. He rolled into a ball, the spikes giving him enhanced traction and a fierce appearance.
"Oh-ho! Now this is what I'm talking about!"
Sonic revved up, the spikes digging into the floor as he built up momentum.
In an instant, he shot toward Sephiroth, spikes cutting through metal and stone alike. He rolled around the battlefield with increased control, making tight turns as he closed in on his opponent.
"Nice look, Hedgehog! Let's see how he handles us both!" Carol shouted out with a grin.
Sephiroth raised his Masamune, readying himself. Just as Sonic closed in with his Spikes form, Carol shot forward from above, launching a series of photon blasts to cover his approach. Sephiroth parried the blasts, each hit deflecting harmlessly into the surroundings, but it gave Sonic the opening he needed. The pink spiked hedgehog rolled in with a rapid series of hits, his sharp exterior skidding across Sephiroth's defenses and forcing him back.
Suddenly, Eggman's PA system crackled to life.
"Attention, all guests! Witness the unparalleled might of Sephiroth in action! Join us after this, assuming he's not too busy finishing off our dear heroes, for a special meet-and-greet. Selfies are encouraged!"
Sephiroth, still parrying the onslaught, gave an irritated look toward the sky, voice as dry as ever.
"No." He remarked bluntly, deflecting Sonic's next strike with a flick of his blade. "I do not participate in... such trivialities."
"Bummer, Sephy! You'd have been a hit!" Sonic quipped, digging his spiked form into the ground to halt his momentum, only to charge forward again.
He shot past Sephiroth, delivering a grazing blow as he skidded around.
Cloud took advantage of the momentary distraction, diving in from behind to strike Sephiroth's blind side. Sephiroth's Masamune came up just in time, the two swordsmen clashing again, creating another burst of sparks.
"Not bad, Strife," Sephiroth said, his voice dripping with mock admiration. "But you'll have to try harder."
With a single, powerful swing, he threw Cloud back, forcing him to skid to a stop.
Carol swooped in, catching Sephiroth's attention as she fired another concentrated photon burst. He dodged to the side, but Carol anticipated it, launching a punch that forced him to shift again, this time into Sonic's path.
The spiked hedgehog seized the opportunity, rolling up and slamming directly into Sephiroth's torso, knocking him back a step. For the first time, Sephiroth seemed mildly surprised.
"Impressive... for amateurs," Sephiroth sneered, regaining his balance.
Eggman's voice chimed in once more, desperate to add a touch of absurdity to the intense battle.
"And don't forget, our exclusive line of Eggman Cola Supreme is available at all snack stations! It's refreshingly... space-flavoured! Just... avoid the side effects. Minor, really."
Sonic snickered, rolling back into his normal form as the Pink Wisp's energy faded.
"A great time to throw in some advertisement, Egghead," the hedgehog teased loudly.
Sephiroth's gaze flicked between the three heroes, taking in each opponent with a mixture of curiosity and disdain.
"Three against one. Do you truly think this will end any differently?" Sephiroth said stoically as he raised his Masamune. Dark energy began to coil around him.
Carol tightened her fists, her cosmic energy flaring brighter as she took a stance.
"Yeah, actually, I do," she declared.
Carol's fists blazed with cosmic energy as she surged forward, her determination radiating as brightly as the neon lights surrounding them. She pushed herself to her full power, drawing from the depths of her abilities. For a brief moment, her eyes glowed as she tapped into her powers, her body igniting in a fierce aura.
Sephiroth's eyes narrowed, sensing her energy intensify. He smirked, almost amused by the challenge. With a swift motion, he raised his Masamune, dark energy swirling around him as he prepared to unleash some of his deadliest moves.
Cloud and Sonic exchanged glances, both taken aback by the sheer power radiating from both combatants.
"She's not holding back," Sonic muttered, watching Carol rocket forward.
"No," Cloud replied, his expression tense. "But knowing Sephiroth, neither will he."
In an instant, Carol closed the distance between herself and Sephiroth, launching a barrage of energy-infused punches and kicks. Each hit was explosive, sending shockwaves across the plaza, her moves igniting with each strike. Sephiroth met her assault head-on, his blade flashing as he blocked her attacks with surgical precision.
Carol's fists collided with Masamune, sending sparks flying. She unleashed a Photon Burst, energy beams shooting from her hands, illuminating the area as they streaked toward Sephiroth. He sidestepped gracefully, vanishing and reappearing behind her in a blur. His hand glowed with dark energy as he unleashed a devastating Scintilla, parrying her next move and forcing her back.
But Carol wasn't done. In a burst of speed, she launched into her Blitz Blow, charging forward with such force that the ground cracked beneath her boots. She landed a punch that sent Sephiroth skidding back, his expression darkening as he braced himself.
"Impressive," Sephiroth said with cold detachment, his voice carrying an unsettling calm. "But raw power alone won't be enough."
He lifted his hand, dark magic swirling around him as he cast Shadow Flare, summoning spheres of darkness that erupted around Carol. She deftly dodged each one, her cosmic energy creating a radiant shield as she charged through. But Sephiroth was relentless, moving with an elegance and speed that made him almost untouchable.
As the two powerhouses clashed, Eggman's voice broke through the chaos on the PA system.
"Attention, all guests! Please avoid the area while Captain Marvel and our honourable VIP guest Sephiroth demonstrate… uh… their combat prowess. Cleanup crews, kindly prepare for deployment."
Sonic clenched his fists, watching the intense back-and-forth.
"She's holding her own, but this guy's no joke," he admitted.
Just then, Sephiroth executed a deadly Octaslash, his blade flashing with incredible speed as he struck Carol multiple times in rapid succession. Carol gritted her teeth, enduring the hits and retaliating with a Photon Blast, forcing Sephiroth to back off slightly.
But he wasn't finished. Sephiroth's expression darkened, and he drew on his full power, summoning Heartless Angel. A dark, winged aura flared around him, and he unleashed a massive shockwave, forcing Carol to brace herself. She met his gaze, unyielding, and pushed forward, even as his energy tried to engulf her.
With one swift, final movement, Sephiroth brought his Masamune down with terrifying force, catching Carol off guard. The impact sent her flying back, crashing through a nearby attraction with a shattering force that shook the ground. She disappeared into a cloud of debris, her cosmic aura flickering as she struggled to recover.
"Carol!" Sonic yelled, his voice filled with worry.
Cloud's eyes widened as he saw his comrade hurled across the battlefield. He glanced back at Sephiroth, his grip tightening on the Buster Sword.
Sephiroth, however, remained unphased, his gaze cold and unflinching.
"Was that all, Captain?" he taunted coldly.
Eggman's voice crackled back on, filled with smug satisfaction.
"Cleanup crews, please report to sector five! It appears our VIP guest Sephiroth has... 'marvel'-ously redesigned the area, courtesy of Captain Marvel herself! Ah, nothing like some unexpected renovations, am I right?"
Sonic rolled his eyes at Eggman's attempt at humour, his expression darkening.
"Yeah, nice one, Egghead..." he muttered under his breath, clenching his fists as he watched Carol pull herself from the wreckage.
As the dust settled, Carol straightened, wiping a trickle of blood from her lip. Her eyes locked onto Sephiroth with a fierce determination.
"You think that's enough to take me out?" she growled. "You're going to have to try a lot harder than that."
Sephiroth raised an eyebrow, an amused gleam flickering in his gaze.
"So resilient. Impressive," he mocked coldly.
Sonic stepped up, his tone serious.
"Alright, enough games," the hedgehog remarked. "The only way we're putting him down is if we hit him with everything we've got—together!"
Cloud gave a quick nod, lifting his Buster Sword and locking eyes with Sephiroth.
"Right," he agreed.
Sephiroth's amusement grew, a faint smirk crossing his lips as he watched them prepare.
"All at once? Well, this might actually be... interesting," he admitted coolly.
The three heroes exchanged a determined glance and, without another word, surged forward in unison, each one honing in on Sephiroth with precision. Each fighter brought their unique strengths to the fray, pushing Sephiroth back with a relentless barrage that he hadn't anticipated.
Cloud and Carol were at the forefront, striking with perfect coordination. Cloud delivered heavy, crushing blows with his Buster Sword, while Carol darted in and out, her Photon Blasts keeping Sephiroth on his toes. Sephiroth moved with practiced elegance, deflecting Cloud's strikes with calculated ease and dodging Carol's blasts with a smirk that hinted at his confidence.
But then, Sonic spotted something glimmering nearby—another Wisp capsule.
"Perfect," he muttered, racing over and smashing into the capsule with a well-placed strike.
A vibrant Yellow Wisp burst free from the capsule, its energy swirling around Sonic in a flash of bright light. Sonic grinned as the energy coursed through him; he knew exactly what this meant.
The bodiless announcer's voice boomed across the park, gleefully announcing, "DRILL!"
With a flash, Sonic transformed into his Drill Form, his body whirling like a high-powered yellow drill bit. Without hesitation, he burrowed deep into the ground, tunneling swiftly beneath the battlefield, ready to strike from below.
Unaware of the hedgehog's underground maneuver, Sephiroth focused on Cloud and Carol. He lunged at Cloud, the Masamune slicing through the air with deadly speed. Cloud barely managed to block, the impact pushing him back, but Sephiroth slipped past his defense, landing a brutal hit on Cloud's side that forced him down to one knee.
"Cloud!" Carol remarked loudly, seeing her ally getting hit.
Cloud grit his teeth and quickly reached into his pouch, recalling the potion gifted to him earlier by the Moogle. He drank it, feeling the restorative energy rush through him, soothing the ache and giving him strength.
Carol seized the moment, unleashing a concentrated Photon Punch that connected squarely with Sephiroth's jaw. The impact was so powerful that it sent him staggering back, his face twisting in surprised irritation. As he recovered, he didn't notice the ground beneath him beginning to shake.
Suddenly, in a burst of yellow energy, Sonic shot up from the ground in his Drill form, breaking the surface right under Sephiroth's feet. The force caught Sephiroth off-guard, launching him skyward with a shocked expression, his cool composure shaken by the surprise attack.
Before he could react, Carol was already in the air, her body crackling with energy. She caught his ankle mid-flight, spinning him with sheer force and building momentum.
"Time to end this!" She shouted.
In a final arc, she released him, sending him hurtling through the air like a comet. With an almighty crash, Sephiroth smashed into a nearby attraction—a futuristic roller coaster that crumpled upon impact, the structure shuddering under the force.
The PA system crackled to life once more with Eggman's voice bordering on hysteria.
"Attention cleanup crews! Another… minor mishap in sector five. A… slight disturbance caused by our VIP and a group of heroes ruining everything! And while you're at it, if anyone's still capable of keeping them contained, NOW would be the time!"
Sonic dusted off his hands, grinning as he surveyed the wreckage.
"Well, that's one way to crash a party," he quipped, clearly pleased with their work. "Nice move, Carol!"
"Thanks," Carol replied, landing gracefully beside him. She kept her gaze on the settling dust, ready for anything.
Cloud stood next to them, his gaze hardened as he looked at the rubble where Sephiroth had fallen.
"Don't get too comfortable. If I know Sephiroth, that won't be enough to keep him down," he muttered darkly.
Sonic rolled his eyes, flapping his arms in annoyance.
"Aw, come on, Cloud. Can't you just enjoy the win? He's not some invincible boogeyman, right?" He paused, catching the cautious glances from Carol and Cloud. "…Right?"
But as if on cue, a faint, cold chuckle echoed through the clearing, sending a shiver through the air. The rubble shifted, and from the shadows, a figure slowly rose, his silhouette unmistakable.
"Oh great…" Sonic muttered, shaking his head in exasperation.
Cloud's expression darkened as he tightened his grip on the Buster Sword.
"I did warn you..." he said, his voice a low murmur.
Sephiroth stood, barely a scratch on him despite the faint cut marring his cheek. His silver hair fell loosely around him, flowing like liquid steel, and his eyes gleamed with a dark, twisted humour. He tilted his head slightly, smirking as he took in the three heroes before him, seeming almost… amused.
Carol clenched her fists, her cosmic energy flaring brighter than ever.
"Oh, come on," she growled, more to herself than anyone else. "What does it take to put this guy down?!"
Sephiroth's gaze swept over each of the trio, lingering briefly on Cloud before he spoke with a dry, almost amused tone.
"Well, that was... entertaining." He paused, and his lips curled into a cold smile. "But I think that's enough for today."
Sonic's brows knit in confusion, taken back by Sephiroth's words and attitude.
"Wait, that's it? You're just gonna... leave?" he asked in confusion.
Sephiroth's gaze turned to Sonic, his eyes gleaming with a mocking light.
"For now," he replied. "Rest assured, I'll be seeing each of you again soon enough." He paused, his smirk sharpening as his gaze locked on Cloud. "That includes you, Cloud."
Cloud's jaw tightened, and he took a step forward, his Buster Sword still drawn.
"Don't run, Sephiroth. This isn't over. We still have things to settle!" he shouted.
But Sephiroth merely raised an eyebrow, his voice cold and condescending.
"Oh, Cloud, always so eager. You haven't changed." His tone turned to an icy mockery, his words dripping with disdain. "But patience. You'll know when it's time. Until then..." He took a step back, his form beginning to fade into darkness. "Try to stay... interesting."
With that, Sephiroth disappeared, dissolving into the shadows, his smirk lingering like a phantom in the air long after he was gone.
Sonic looked at the empty space where Sephiroth had just stood, blinking in disbelief.
"Uh... did he just... ghost us?" the hedgehog muttered scratching his head. He was clearly trying to make sense of the bizarre turn of events. "I mean, we were right here! What's his deal?"
Cloud's shoulders slumped as he lowered his Buster Sword.
"Sephiroth does this," Cloud explained with frustration. His tone was grim. "It's his way of playing with us. He always leaves just when you think you're about to stop him. For him, the chase is part of the thrill. It's his own sick joke. To him, it's all a game."
Sonic stood with his hands on his hips, his grin widening as he tilted his head thoughtfully.
"Well, that's one way to be a sore loser." He paused, then shot a mischievous look toward Cloud and Carol. "But still, I'd call this a win for Team Sonic!"
Cloud raised an eyebrow, lifting the Buster Sword to rest it on his shoulder.
"Team Sonic?" he echoed, his tone dry.
"Just go with it, Cloud," Carol sighed, folding her arms.
Cloud stared at her for a moment, clearly not entirely sold, but finally gave a small, resigned nod.
"Fine," he muttered.
"But seriously, dude, is it a win or not?" Sonic pressed, a glint of mischief still in his eyes.
Cloud glanced at him, his expression stoic but just the faintest bit exasperated.
"It was... sort of a win, I guess," he affirmed.
"I'll take it. Small victories, you know?" Sonic exclaimed with a shrug.
"Right..." Cloud muttered, sounding unsure if he'd ever fully understand Sonic's brand of optimism.
"Now you're getting it!" Sonic declared, jabbing a finger in the air. "Team Sonic—taking down Heartless, robots, and overdramatic, silver-haired guys with big swords!"
"If you say so..." Cloud said perplexed.
Carol couldn't help but roll her eyes, but the smile tugging at her lips was unmistakable.
"Just don't let it go to your head, Hedgehog," she warned with a playful tone.
"Too late," Sonic replied with a wink, though his gaze lingered on the debris left in Sephiroth's wake. His grin faded, his expression turning serious. "But, seriously... Sephiroth's gone for now. We've still got a generator to shut down and some Wisps to save."
Carol nodded, unfolding her arms as she straightened up.
"Right. Let's go find that generator. I'm betting Tails, Yacker, and Tifa are waiting for us."
Cloud gave a silent nod, his expression as stoic as ever, and began walking toward the path ahead, leaving Sonic and Carol to follow.
Sonic watched Cloud for a moment, then turned to Carol, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"Man, he's stoic. Cloud really needs to hang out with Shadow," he said with a teasing tone. "They'd have a staring contest for days."
Carol chuckled, shaking her head.
"Yeah, but something tells me Cloud's got a sense of humor buried under all that brooding."
"Think he'd crack a smile if I called him Spiky McSwordface?" Sonic quipped with a smirk.
Carol let out a genuine laugh, shaking her head.
"See? It's catchy, right? I mean, it's got that whole 'mysterious vibe' thing going on, don't you think?" Sonic continued, pleased with this new nickname.
"Maybe save that one for after we deal with the generator," Carol suggested with a smile, still trying to compose herself.
Sonic grinned, nodding as they picked up the pace.
"Alright, but I'm keeping it in my back pocket," he affirmed.
With that, the two raced off together, heading towards the generator, the neon lights of Starlight Carnival glowing in their wake.
RANK: S
The massive generator jutted out of the ground like a jagged mountain, its metal spires clawing at the sky as it pulsed with a faint, eerie light. Tails, Yacker, and Tifa were already circling it, when Sonic, Carol, and Cloud arrived.
"Yo!" Sonic called out, skidding to a stop just in front of the group, his signature grin firmly in place.
Carol touched down gracefully beside him. Moments later, Cloud approached with his usual quiet intensity, joining the group with a nod.
"Great timing!" Tails remarked, looking to the group. "So… I take it you dealt with Sephiroth?"
"Eh, 'dealt with' might be a stretch," Sonic replied with a shrug, glancing at Cloud and Carol. "He was... entertained enough to leave. But something tells me that guy's got a few more tricks up his sleeve."
Cloud nodded, his expression dark.
"Sephiroth's not one to disappear for long," he explained. "He left because he wanted to, not because we pushed him back."
Tifa crossed her arms, nodding in understanding.
"He's got his own twisted sense of purpose. If he's left us alone for now, it's only because he's playing at something we can't see yet," she admitted.
Yacker chirped, floating in excited circles around the group, and Tails held up his Miles Electric to translate. The device flickered, then displayed Yacker's message.
"'Big scary man go poof,'" Tails read, raising an eyebrow. "'Scary man will return when stars are right.'" He glanced up at the group. "Uh, well, that's ominous."
Carol shook her head, chuckling as she eyed the generator, which hummed ominously beside them, pulsing with energy.
"Alright, that's one problem down," she said, sizing it up with a glint of excitement. "But I think I can help with this one, too. Mind if I take a shot?"
Sonic grinned, stepping back with exaggerated flair.
"Be our guest, Danvers," he said, sweeping his gloved hand toward the generator.
"Okay, but… maybe don't overdo it?" Tails interjected nervously, eyeing Carol's glowing fists. "One wrong hit could be, uh, catastrophic."
"Catastrophic?" Carol raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
"Yeah, like, planet-shattering catastrophic," Tails said, his voice laced with genuine concern. "Not to mention, the blast could destabilise the other worlds connected to Eggman's Amusement Park."
Carol looked at the generator, then back at Tails, her lips twisting into a smirk.
"Alright. Noted. Guess I'll keep the 'planet-shattering' punches in reserve," she teased playfully.
"Maybe just, I don't know, a gentle tap, perhaps?" Sonic suggested with a laugh.
"You know, like a… super-powered love tap?" Tifa chimed in, turning to Carol.
Cloud, next to Tifa, folded his arms, his face stoic as ever.
"Gentle for me, or gentle for you?" Carol teased, cracking her knuckles but lowering her energy output.
Tails gulped, his eyes wide with anticipation. Yacker looked nervous as well.
"Let's aim for… gentle in general?" he suggested.
"Meh, that will do, I guess..." Carol admitted, readying herself.
Her cosmic energy built up around her fists, a radiant glow that illuminated the surrounding area. She pulled her arm back, then with one powerful punch, struck the generator with a surge of energy.
The entire structure shook, sparking and whirring as the lights flickered erratically. With a final burst of energy, the generator collapsed inward, sputtering before finally going dark. Silence settled over the area as the last pulse of light from the generator faded away.
"Well," Sonic said, looking impressed, "I'd say that's a job well done."
Tifa let out a breath, a small smile on her face. Cloud's demeanour didn't change at all.
"That'll take the pressure off these Wisps, for now," Tifa said, gesturing to Yacker.
Yacker chirped happily, zooming in tight loops around Tails in celebration. Tails smiled to see his little friend happy.
Carol dusted her hands off, giving a satisfied nod as she surveyed the wreckage of the now-defunct generator.
"Always happy to lend a hand," she said, flashing a grin. "So… what's next?"
Sonic stretched, crossing his arms behind his head with a look of satisfaction.
"Well, first off, we need to figure out what these generators are actually doing," Sonic explained. "We've been smashing them left and right, but Egghead doesn't usually go all out like this unless he's got a grand scheme."
"Agreed," Tails nodded. "If we can understand what they're for, we might get a lead on Eggman's overall plan—and stop him before he can use it."
"Which means we need to find more generators and take them out," Carol added. "The more we disrupt, the weaker his whole setup becomes, whatever it is."
"Smart idea, Danvers!" Sonic replied with a nod. "So I guess our next move is to head over to the transport hub and see which planet's next on Baldy McNosehair's hit list."
"Baldy… McNosehair?" Tifa echoed, raising an eyebrow and glancing at Cloud, who simply shrugged, completely unfazed.
"Oh, that's nothing," Sonic said, smirking. "Trust me, Eggman's heard worse." Then, with a sly grin, he turned to Cloud. "And speaking of nicknames, I think I've got one for you too, Cloud."
Cloud's expression remained stoic, though there was a flicker of curiosity in his eyes.
"Do I even want to know?" he asked bluntly.
"Too late... Spiky McSwordface" Sonic quipped, his grin widening.
Tifa snorted, trying and failing to hold back a laugh, while Carol chuckled, crossing her arms.
"Not bad, but maybe let's workshop it a bit?" Carol said thoughtfully.
Cloud looked unimpressed, though there was the faintest twitch of amusement at the corner of his mouth.
"I'll… pass," he remarked.
Sonic shrugged, unfazed.
"Suit yourself. But hey, you're part of Team Sonic now! We're all one big, hero family," the hedgehog exclaimed.
"Team… Sonic?" Tifa asked, her expression half-confused, half-amused.
"Yeah, just go with it. It makes him happy," Carol sighed, rolling her eyes.
Sonic gave a thumbs-up.
"See? Captain Marvel gets it!" Sonic beamed. "Welcome aboard to Team Sonic!"
Cloud looked over, raising an eyebrow in his typical reserved manner.
"Actually… we'll have to pass. For now," he replied, his voice low but firm.
"What, you gotta go somewhere?" Sonic asked, tilting his head in surprise. "You sure you don't want to stick around and help us knock some sense into Egghead?"
Tifa gave a small, understanding smile towards Sonic.
"It's tempting, but we've got unfinished business of our own," she explained. "We came here to track down Sephiroth, and… we still don't know where he'll strike next."
"Makes sense. You need to keep following his trail," Tails chimed in thoughtfully. "It's not just Eggman causing trouble."
"Exactly," Cloud replied with a nod. "Darkness like his doesn't just… vanish. We'll have to keep tracking him."
Yacker, floating beside Tails, let out a string of animated chirps and hums. Tails quickly pulled out his Miles Electric, trying to get a translation, but the screen flashed with garbled text before struggling to adjust.
"Uh, let's see… Yacker's saying something about… 'parting ways… but paths crossing again'? Or maybe… 'the smell of pine trees'? Sorry, still working out the kinks here." Tails gave an apologetic shrug as he tinkered with the device.
Tifa chuckled softly. "I think we get the gist. Thanks, Yacker."
Sonic looked back at Cloud and Tifa, an easy grin still on his face. "Well, you know where to find us when you're ready for another team-up. We'll keep the 'Team Sonic' roster open for you two."
"Just don't expect us to be available for every cameo," Cloud replied dryly, a hint of amusement barely breaking through his stoic gaze.
Carol smirked, crossing her arms, turning to Cloud.
"Did Cloud just make a funny?" she mused with a teasing tone.
"I don't do 'funny'," Cloud retorted stoically, his face deadpan.
"And there it goes," Sonic chuckled, shaking his head. "Thought we had him for a second!"
Cloud rolled his eyes, though a faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Tifa, who had been watching with an amused grin, patted him on the shoulder.
"Guess that's our cue to get going," she said, her voice warm.
"Actually, we need to head to the terminal. Why don't we walk together before we part ways?" Tails suggested, looking to the group.
The group nodded, and they began strolling down the neon-lit path, the remnants of Starlight Carnival fading into the distance. The dazzling lights above seemed to cast a softer glow, as if the carnival itself recognized the calm that had settled over the heroes.
Sonic walked at the front of the group, hands behind his head as he looked back at his friends.
"You know, no matter where we come from or what we're fighting, it's teamwork that gets us through. We might not have all the answers, but together? We've got a pretty good shot."
Cloud looked at him thoughtfully, his typical serious expression softening just a little.
"Maybe you're onto something," he admitted, his voice low.
"Stick around, Strife—you might learn a thing or two," Sonic replied with a smirk.
Carol chuckled, glancing at the group with a fond look.
"You're not half bad, Hedgehog," she said with a smile. "Just try not to gloat too much."
Sonic shrugged, that mischievous sparkle in his eye.
"No promises, Danvers," he teased.
As they reached the terminal, the group exchanged nods, each aware of the paths awaiting them. But there was a feeling of connection that lingered, a quiet understanding that transcended worlds and adventures.
"Alright," Sonic said, raising a hand in a casual salute to Tifa and Cloud. "Until next time."
Cloud's face softened, and he gave a subtle nod.
"Take care, Sonic. Carol. Tails. Yacker."
As they turned to leave, Sonic couldn't resist one last thought, speaking just loud enough for the group to hear.
"At the end of the day, it's not about who we are or where we're from—it's the friends who stick by us that really matter. That's the real power."
With a small smile, Tifa and Cloud nodded, each glancing at their respective allies. Then, with a final wave, Tifa and Cloud turned to make their way to their transport pod.
Sonic watched them go before turning to Tails, Carol, and Yacker, his familiar grin brightening his face.
"Alright, team. Where to next?" he mused.
Yacker hovered excitedly, chirping in his native Wisp language. Tails raised the Miles Electric to translate, watching as the screen flickered to life.
"According to Yacker, our next stop is Planet Wisp," Tails translated. "It's his and the other Wisps' home world. Eggman dragged it here and linked it to the other parks. He's got something big set up there that we need to deal with."
"Sounds like just the place for another adventure!" Carol said, her cosmic energy sparked faintly around her. "Let's go save the day… again."
"Alright! To Planet Wisp, then—let's show Eggman what happens when he messes with our friends' home!" Sonic exclaimed with a enthusiastic nod.
With renewed energy, they headed toward the transportation pod, Yacker buzzing beside them. Their mission was clear: free the Wisps, protect Planet Wisp, and put a stop to whatever scheme Eggman had in store there.
As the pod doors closed behind them, Sonic shot his friends one last determined look.
"Next stop: Planet Wisp. Let's keep the momentum going, team!"
