Sunny was alone. However it wasn't the same type of loneliness that Sunny had felt days prior, he wasn't stuck in headspace, and his friends while far away now, knew the truth,
for better and worse.
Currently it was a Sunday, almost everything in his new home was unpacked, and Sunny was lying in his bed. He forced himself to stand, to prepare himself for the day. He got dressed, and looked at himself in the mirror. Sunny wasn't in the mood to dress how he normally would so instead he dawned, a simple plain white T-shirt, beige shorts, and a combo of white socks with black shoes. His short black hair was a little messy…
The eyepatch, that white hospital eyepatch. He didn't want to acknowledge the thing, but it was hard not to. The eyepatch stood out, it was like a dollop of paint on a blank canvas, impossible to cover, and no matter how much Sunny protested he simply had to accept the fact he was stuck with it. Hopefully people just ignore it.
Stepping out onto the sidewalk of his new neighbourhood, it was connected to Closeby city, the city at which his Mom worked. Aside from the cars that would drive by, the block at which his house was located was quiet, devoid of people.
Sunny moved across the sidewalk, he remembered seeing a park that connected the more rural neighbourhood with the urban city while in the car ride to his new home. It didn't take very long for Sunny to stand at the entrance of 'Dream Park'.
Walking around Dream Park, Sunny took note of how grandiose it was compared to Faraway Park, for a start the park was actually clean with not a single trash bag in sight, and what amazed Sunny even more was the size of the park. He struggled to find the words for it, the park just had more. It had fountains, walkways, a basketball court in the distance, and a playground that he was too old to go to.
The park had plenty of people as well, all scattered around. Sunny noticed a few groups of people that looked to be around his age, but despite wanting to make new friends, Sunny couldn't find the strength to talk with any of them, so he went over to an empty bench and sat on it, taking in his new surroundings.
"Hello stranger!"
A sudden, cheerful voice came from behind Sunny, which surprised him, causing him to fail a bit, looking back he was met with a strange individual. Brown hair, two pigtails lower on the back of the head, a round face with eyes barely open featuring bags under her eyes, so dark one would think her eyes are closed all the time. She seemed to be around his age at the least.
"Um… Hel-hello? Who are you?"
"Oh! I'm Madotsuki, you?"
She spoke with a big grin on her face, reaching out for a handshake. Sunny was perplexed. This stranger had come out of nowhere and was so cheerful and energetic, a stark contrast to Sunny's character moments before being taken by surprise.
Sunny took Madotsuki's hand and answered her question.
"Sunny… That's my name"
Madotsuki shook Sunny's hand strongly, much stronger than Sunny was expecting. After an uncomfortable amount of time for a handshake, Madotsuki stared at Sunny's eyepatch, he knew she was staring because there wasn't much else to look at on his face besides the eyepatch so it was obvious. A bead of sweat formed on Sunny's face then out of the blue
Madotsuki jutted her arm forward, pointing at Sunny's eyepatch, and blurting out the words.
"Nice eyepatch! Are you a pirate or something?"
She said it in such a straightforward way, Sunny almost wanted to tell her how he got it, but he couldn't, telling a stranger such a personal, and fresh trauma was ridiculous.
He recoiled back, giving her an uncomfortable look, hoping she would take the hint.
"You a pirate or something?"
Madotsuki repeated the words oblivious to how awkward she had just made the conversion. Sunny sweated some more and turned his head away.
"N-no… No, I'm not a pirate, and can you not talk about it? My eyepatch…?"
The girl tilted her head in what seemed to be genuine confusion.
"Oh? It looks so cool though! But… If you say so!"
Madotsuki then in a sudden motion hopped over the bench she was standing behind.
She seemed to actually struggle with the action, it taking her a few tries to make it over the bench, this awkward display made Sunny ease up a little. Trusting her to not talk about his eyepatch again.
"Hmmm, You're new! Aren't you?"
"Um, yeah… My Mom and I moved here Yesterday, how did you know?"
"I guessed! Where did you come from?"
Madotsuki grins, proud of herself for guessing that piece of information.
"Oh, I see. Well, I came from Faraway town. This is my first time ever being in a city…"
The girl giggled, Sunny knew what was coming, a place called 'Faraway' really sets itself up for the most obvious jokes.
"Hehehe, so you're far away from Faraway? I get it"
"Yeah, I suppose you're right…"
Sunny sighed, this to him was completely unexpected, while it was his choice to come to the park, and attempt to make friends. Madotsuki was unlike any other strange person Sunny had seen before, she was eccentric, awkward, cheerful, but Sunny didn't know if she was just like this, or if he was being made fun of.
"H-hey… Madotsuki? Why did you choose to talk to me?"
"You looked lonely! And now that I'm here you aren't as lonely anymore!"
The girl flashed another grin, which took Sunny aback a little, she was being genuine not a hint of malice, no noticeable ulterior motives just a kind, strange and a tiny bit dumb girl.
That made Sunny smile, just a little smirk.
Sunny's cell phone rang, it broke his train of thought. Sunny took the call, it was his Mom, she was done with work, and she was stopped outside the park waiting for him.
Madotsuki watched silently, until Sunny hung up, and sighed.
"Sorry Madotsuki, I have to go home. My mom is waiting for me"
For the first time Madotsuki looked dejected, or at least Sunny assumed. It was a slight change but noticeable, her consistent grin gone, the corners of her mouth now fashioned a slight downwards turn.
We exchanged simple goodbyes, and Sunny began to walk off, he was a half decent distance away until the girl shouted out to him.
"Hey Sunny! Have a good day now, new friend!"
Sunny looked back, staring at Madotsuki, standing close by the bench they were just sitting on. He focused on her as a whole now, the dull red or pale carmine coloured sweater that featured a checkerboard pattern of 3 white squares, and 3 grey squares arranged lengthways. Red shoes with not much to note, he was too far away to recognize any details, and baggy black pants which made the shoes harder to see, along with aforementioned facial features was the entirety of Madotsuki, Sunny's newest, and first friend in the city.
Returning home, Sunny felt happy. Sure Madotsuki was a little different, but they were friends now! Tomorrow would be Sunny's first day of school, and hopefully he would see Madotsuki again.
