Legend has it that long ago, a black dragon and an orange cat were romantically involved with each other...
The story goes that the dragon came from a den who were known to be feared by society and the mere presence of one in a common location would cause the inhabitants to flee and make way for them. The cat, on the other hand, came from a friendly and quiet village, where it is said that one could find eternal happiness by visiting.
One day, an orange cat strayed far from the village while doing his usual duties and stumbled upon a fearsome black dragon in the forest, whose scales were reflected by the sunlight and his wings were tucked under the sides of his body. His eyes were closed and he wasn't moving, for he was asleep.
The cat heard about the dragon and what they do. He heard stories from the village folk who had the unlucky moment of running into the large creatures, describing them as powerful beings who could literally knock you down with lightning.
Part of him said to turn away and go back to the village, but another part of him was curious and wanted to see the dragon up close. Carefully, he approached the sleeping creature, his paws making no sound to avoid waking him up. Once he made it to the dragon's side, he took the time to analyze and examine him.
The dragon's scales were black, allowing him to camoflauge at night when hunting. He was clearly twice or thrice the size of the cat and had smooth skin.
"What a lovely dragon!" the cat thought as he went around the dragon, taking in his appearance. He never knew that he would actually meet one, let alone one that is currently in a peaceful state.
Not wanting to intrude further, the cat prepared to leave when he heard a deep groan behind him. He looked back and gasped! The dragon had awoken from his slumber! The cat began to panic slightly, frozen in his tracks as he watched the dragon stretch and rise from his sleeping spot.
The dragon had the most gorgeous eyes he had ever seen, a nice shade of green. He then looked down at the small orange cat that had entered his space. Like him, the feline had green eyes, too. The dragon tilted his head down so that he was eye level with the cat and got a good look of his features.
The cat had fluffy fur to the point he looked like a cuddly stuffed toy and had a diamond shaped birthmark under his right eye. "How beautiful." thought the dragon. While most would run away upon seeing him, for some reason, this cat showed no fear and approached him while he was asleep.
The dragon gently nudged his face against the cat's, surprising the feline. In his culture, having one nudge or bump their face against another was a sign of affection. Did the dragon have a love at first sight moment? It could be.
The cat returned the action, earning a satisfied growl from the dragon. They then smelled each other, familiarizing themselves with each other's scent. The dragon smelled like the earth, while the cat smelled sweet.
And from that day on, the two creatures hit it off immediately. The cat would frequently sneak away from the village to go to his meet up spot with the dragon, immediately cozying up and snuggling to his side. Despite their quite large size difference, they would always find a way to accomodate one another. The cat would sometimes offer gifts or food from hunting, while the dragon would sometimes share some of his treasure.
The dragon gave the cat the rare privilege of being wrapped by his wings, something that he never did to his fellow dragons. They never worried about being watched or seen by other cats or dragons as their meet up spot was somewhere deep within the woods.
That all changed one day when a cat caught the two pressing their noses against each other, a form of "kissing". The wandering cat, thinking that the black dragon had kidnapped the orange cat for himself, ran back to the village and alerted the others about it.
A group was sent to "get" him back. The orange cat refused, having grown closer to the black dragon. The explorers, who only saw the dragons as beasts, attacked. In retaliation to protect himself and his feline mate, the black dragon summoned lightning in the form of a warning to them.
This move would soon usher in a war between both species. The cat village had one goal in mind: slay the black dragon and rescue the orange cat.
The forest would be filled with the battle cries of the cats and the dragons as they engaged in combat. The black dragon had the orange cat under his wings, protecting him from the bloodshed. Seeing the window of opportunity, he ushered the feline away from the violence and into a more peaceful area.
As he snuck away, the black dragon suddenly let out a yowl of pain. A cat had struck him in the belly area with a lance. The orange cat's fur stood up as he witnessed his mate attempt to get it off. He tried to help but he was too small and a little weak to pull it out, his paws slipping whenever he grabbed a hold of the lance.
With time running out, the black dragon dragged his body behind a large boulder and slumped over there, his breathing labored. The orange cat mewled as he furiously nudged the black dragon's head, trying to get him to stay awake. The dragon struggled to keep his eyes open, the blood loss making him dizzy.
He brought his face closer to the feline and gently licked his cheek with the tip of his tongue, kissing him for the last time until he closed his eyes, then he went still.
The cats emerged victorious, having achieved their goal but the orange cat didn't want to return to the village, instead wanting to stay behind with his mate.
Both sides eventually left the forest, making it quiet. In denial, the cat tried various ways to get the dragon to wake up. He kneaded his sides. He nudged the sides of his face. He bumped their noses together.
But nothing.
The black dragon was slain.
Heartbroken, the orange cat crawled under his wings and stayed there, trying to absorb any warmth he had left. He refused to move from that spot, his cries unheard. Even when his basic needs called for his attention, he didn't acknowledge them.
The orange cat could not live without the black dragon by his side. With one last whimper from his lips, he closed his eyes and laid limp, protected by the wings of the creature he called his lover.
