After they were escorted into the room for testing the witch came back to her large desk.
"Would you like to wait, receive a memo, or an owl upon her completion?" the witch asked Severus.
"Memo will suffice, for the both of us," Severus said smoothly.
Sirius looked at Severus from the corner of his eyes but nodded his consent. Sirius decided to defer to Severus on this matter as he had no experience with it. While he was aware of this office and what the practices were, he had never needed to come here. All his testing was done at Hogwarts, even his WOMBAT test that his father said was completely necessary.
"Of course, Professor Snape," the witch said politely.
"If I may ask, has the apprentice sat her WOMBAT yet?" Sirius asked the witch.
The witch looked over at Severus for permission, who nodded his consent.
"No, I have a memo from Mrs. Cedrella Weasley that Professor Snape signed off on, that she will be taking it on February 13th," she answered.
"I'd like to set it up so Harry will be taking his WOMBAT next year, will that be possible?" Sirius asked.
"Would the testing take place at Hogwarts or the Ministry?" she asked.
"At Hogwarts please, while they're doing the OWL and NEWT testing," Sirius answered.
The witch nodded, "As the members of the committee will already be there, some for that test, it will be easy to arrange."
Severus raised a brow at that, "Would any student be able to take that test? I typically give Professor McGonagall a list of students whose parents requested it of me only. I was under the impression from the Headmaster that a parent or guardian had to specifically request it."
The witch looked over her glasses at him. She wasn't a complete Dumbledore admirer; she could see the favoritism and selective students from the testing lists. Thus far only Sacred 28 and those who worked in the Ministry, if they had the proper connections, took certain tests. Otherwise, it was squibs who took it so they wouldn't be obliviated and left to fend for themselves in the muggle world.
"Provided that the examiners are presented with the number of students from the professors or their parents or guardians, yes," the witch answered, "any student may take it."
"I will be sure to give the list of students to the Deputy Headmistress before she gives you the list of names," Severus said.
"We look forward to it, Professor Snape," she answered.
Severus nodded in response before looking at Sirius. The other wizard gave Severus a smirk, he had a feeling he knew what students would be added to that list.
Severus rolled his eyes and walked out of the room, Sirius quickly following.
"Hey, wait up!" Sirius said, quickly reaching Severus's pace.
Sirius had been trying to get along with Severus. He had apologized to the other wizard sincerely. Severus was just… like Remus when they first became friends, but spikier in personality. Spikes he had to admit he helped sharpen, and was doing his best to not retaliate to deteriorate their budding friendship. Sirius was sure they'd end up friends when it was over, hopefully he'd be alive to see it. Last time he got locked up, and Severus had made a name for himself.
He was respected and feared, a combo that Sirius was familiar with. It was the same way they said Black, without the backbone of pureblood and Sacred Twenty-Eight. The Black name was still more respected than Snape, but Snape wasn't a wizarding name, even if Severus was a half-blood. Sirius knew what that meant; that Severus actually contributed to society, even while being a dick to kids.
Those that graduated with Snape as their Professor spoke of him with a mix of repulsed and respect. They hated his attitude, but once they were sixth or seventh years, they realized that it was more for their protection than anything. Then again sixth and seventh year they learned about the ingredients and how they could be terribly injured, poisoned, killed, with a misstep. Those that took NEWT level potions with Severus Snape had a healthy dose of respect for the wizard.
Sirius noticed, as he had been asking people about Severus conversationally, that the only ones who still had a small bone to pick with the potions master was Gryffindor alumni. Something he knew he contributed to. Even after he graduated when he heard that Snape would be teaching, James and him owled all the birds and some blokes he was friendly with, to give him a hard time. He heard, and wasn't surprised, that Gryffindor gave him the hardest time his first year of teaching.
"What is it, Black?" Severus asked evenly.
"I wanted to discuss the list of students with you and the Deputy, while we wait. I can easily get one of the conference rooms," Sirius said, "Plus I want to see about making a generous donation so one class can be updated and the other revived."
Severus stopped. The way the other wizard was going about it was sneaky. Sirius clearly wanted people to know that his group's children would be taking the WOMBAT. A skipped over, but highly relevant test. While not as important to the masses as OWLs or NEWTs, it allowed for a more political in-depth knowledge of the Ministry. Something the Order clearly needed some days, and muggleborns or raised like Hermione and Harry.
The update of one class and revival of another could only benefit Hogwarts and the students. If it was the class he was hoping it was, one should be easier than the other. However, if they had the discussion here as opposed to Headquarters or Hogwarts, Dumbledore wouldn't be able to sweep it under the rug as just a private meeting of one student's parental figure. That alone almost made him giddy.
"Please, call the Deputy by patronus. It will take a few minutes and perhaps we can get the room in quick order…?" Severus replied.
Sirius nodded with a crooked smile and quickly sent a messenger patronus to Minerva. A wonderful prank, Sirius was beginning to learn, was something that didn't require ridicule. Sure, he was from an older time, and he appreciate slapstick humor the most, but he was recognizing that a lot of what were pranks to him, was bullying for others.
Minerva entered the room that Sirius had managed to get. She was almost angry at the fact the younger wizard didn't give her a room number, until a paper memo made its way to her with a number after she had her wand weighed.
"Sirius, Severus," she nodded, "I was led to believe that this was a school matter?"
Both wizards nodded.
"Deputy Headmistress McGonagall, thank you for joining us on such short notice," Sirius greeted Minerva formally.
They were seated at a long table; Sirius was at the head and Severus on his left side. Sirius waved his hand, directing her to a chair at his right side. Minerva took the seat and gave him a stern eye.
"I see." She said knowing that this was an official meeting, "What seems to be the problem, Lord Black?" she asked.
"It's less of a problem and more of a concern," Sirius started, knowing that the room was bugged.
"How may I be of help?" Minerva asked.
She knew that Sirius and Severus could have held this meeting in the privacy of Headquarters, or even at Hogwarts. This meeting was a setup, but what kind remained to be seen. With Severus here though, she knew it wasn't a joke or some prank. If it was then it wasn't malicious.
"I have signed Harry up to take his WOMBAT next year. I would like to know if there is a Professor at Hogwarts who teaches the subject matter," Sirius answered evenly.
Minerva's eyebrow shot up, unamused thus far, "No. Any student who currently wants to take the WOMBAT test must privately study it on their own. If they ask their Head of House, they may be provided a study workbook."
"Apprentice Lady Granger will also be taking that test, but in February," Sirius responded before he steepled his fingers.
"Professor Snape is will within his rights to have Apprentice Granger take whatever test he deems fit and will teach her accordingly," Minerva replied.
"I meant no disrespect." Sirius said, now holding his hands up, "What I mean to say is that Professor Snape decided it was important for her to take it. If he thinks it will help her, I know it will help Harry. However, I was also thinking about the other Hogwarts students. I know Hogwarts will pay for any testing fees the students may acquire while they are students."
Minerva's face relaxed, "That is correct. Hogwarts covers all testing fees for her students."
"I would like to make a generous donation both to help cover those fees and also to help cover some other expenses," Sirius continued with a grin.
"Hogwarts will happily accept donations to help her costs," Minerva said professionally, "What other expense do you expect Hogwarts to encounter?"
"I think Hogwarts could use two new professors," Sirius answered bluntly.
Minvera's eyes widened for a moment before she fixed her expression to a more neutral setting, "What do you mean?"
"Binns needs to be replaced. Even if you leave him in the classroom, we all know there are plenty more empty classrooms that the classes can be held in. He focuses entirely on wars of other species with wizards, and while that is helpful in rounding out some of the education, he delivers it in a way that makes it a joke of a class. I want History of Magic to be more up to date, to included new information and changes. I want it up to ICW standards. I also think there should be a professor to teach what is on the WOMBAT tests," Sirius answered.
Severus nodded his reluctant agreement. At this point it was more on principal than complete dislike of the other wizard.
"I'm proposing that Hogwarts hires a professor to teach them the laws they must abide as well as how to function as adults in certain situations," Sirus stated.
"While I agree with you on both fronts, Professor Binns has agreed to donate his salary to the school, and has done so for decades. With the amount of students Hogwarts has had since the wars, we cannot afford another professor and have had to turn away others," Minerva admitted.
"I am willing to donate enough galleons to pay for both professors. Not just their sign on bonus, but also 10 years tenure. I will, of course, ensure that the paperwork is done and signed at Gringotts to avoid any potential embezzlement of funds. No slight on Hogwarts," Sirius said.
Minerva's eyes sparkled at that. She knew that if Sirius didn't do this so publicly that Albus would have tried to divert some of those funds to fund the war. This was the education donation would truly be used for its purpose. Having new professors would also help, and then the students would stop using Binn's class as nap time.
"Of course not, Lord Black," she responded evenly.
"As I said, I want the Professor who covers the material for WOMBAT to also teach the students how to function as adults. I want it to be mandatory. A mixture of legalese and home economics," Sirius continued with a smirk, "After all, not every student will stay at home with their parents. Not every student has a house-elf to cater to their needs. I do agree that they should have at least 2 years of formal training before undergoing this class, however Students aren't required to return to Hogwarts after their OWLs. I don't want anyone to miss out. Three years is too little, four however they might learn enough. But if they start from first year, it would be easier to teach them the laws they must follow. Little by little of course, but I think all firsties should be aware of what they can do in case of emergencies."
"What about students who will graduate this year, or the other older students?" Minerva asked.
"I will personally cover any student who wants to take the class. If there is too many, I will hire someone else to go over the same material as a night class or even after school class. If they're currently at Hogwarts, I will pay for it. Please mention it to the seventh years," Sirius answered calmly.
"Is there anyone you had in mind, or would Hogwarts be able to hire staff?" Minerva asked.
Sirius nodded knowing the worry, "I would typically leave that in your hands, but I also know that Defense professors have been slim pickings. Mr. Crouch is doing a fine job, and I hope he continues teaching for a tenure. I want you, the Board, myself, and Madam Bones to meet to go over the qualifications of what it is we need. Since it will involve the law, I want to be sure they know the law and follow it," he finished with a small growl.
Minerva was unimpressed, but knew his proposal had merit. However, as the previous two professors were quickly replaced in the first semester of this year… It didn't matter that they were technically appointed, but they were still removed from Hogwarts for criminal charges.
"The person we will be interviewing for that position, would they need to have taken their WOMBAT?" she asked.
"Yes. And they need to have gotten an O," Sirius said firmly.
Severus nodded in agreement next to the wizard, "I agree Minerva. Most of the students go out, unaware of actual life, and screw up. Either with the Law or Statue of Secrecy. Certain families have better guidance than others, but it would benefit every student. We have actual heirs as students, and they need to know the laws. They need to know which are the correct choices to make in certain situations. Common sense is only common if you teach it."
Sirius nodded, "I know my estranged cousin was of the firm opinion that laws were beneath her. Look at her now, Azkaban."
Severus and Minerva rolled their eyes at that. While it was good for the eavesdroppers, it was very well known that Bellatrix was exceptionally bright, but also exceedingly cruel and stubborn. Everyone knew that if it weren't for her being pureblood, let alone a Black, she would have been kissed.
"Clearly this won't pass for this year's semester as we need to prep many things. Informing everyone, interviewing people, making sure they have the right credentials, then helping them with lesson planning and making sure it passes inspection from both an educator's perspective as well as the DMLE," Minerva stated.
Sirius nodded, "Apprentice Lady Granger has informed my godson that she will help him study. She also told him that there were a handful more than willing to help study. You mentioned yourself that all Harry would need to do is ask you for a study workbook. He can start when he returns for the semester."
"That is correct. When Mr. Potter returns to Hogwarts I will see to it that he receives the study workbook," Minerva stated.
"I'm glad to hear it," Sirius said with a smile, "My next point of contention though would have to be why such classes have been discontinued. Hogwarts used to have Domestic Magic as a necessary class. I know because my mother griped about how she was taught that Hogwarts should continue teaching us. I know my aunts taught their daughters and daughter-in-law. It was embarrassing for the daughter-in-law."
Minerva pursed her lips but nodded, "I remember taking Domestic Magic, and I must admit that the house-elves have more work to do because the students aren't cleaning up after themselves. Mostly muggleborn and half-blood tidy up their part of the dorm, but overall, it is a problem. The current Headmaster disbanded the class claiming that it was redundant when the castle has house-elves."
Severus snorted, "Just because he's been living there most of his life, doesn't mean he's completely in touch with reality. He oversees many things and occasionally forgets the students will need to take care of themselves. Reality is saying the students need Domestic Magic."
Sirius nodded, "They really do. It might not help them much as students, but it will help them after Hogwarts. Aurors need help keeping their robes presentable. Most of them don't know how to use their magic to make quick meals while we're out on the job. I remember Aunt Dorea would wave her wand and within 2 minutes I'd have a perfectly well-made pastry. Provided they had the ingredients of course."
Minerva struggled not to roll her eyes. At this point she was aware they were posturing and was done with the charade. She had no patience for it. Not while she was a kid, not when she was an auror, and especially not as a professor.
"Is it my understanding that you would like the bring back Domestic Magic as well as ensure that they're taught what they need to know for their WOMBAT, should they decide to take it?" Minerva asked bluntly.
"Yes," Sirius grinned, "I would like to fund the revival of the Domestic Magic class as well as upping the standards for History of Magic."
"Would you like to meet with the Headmaster at Gringotts sometime later to sign the paperwork?" Minerva asked.
"As I'm quite busy today, I will be sure to have Gringotts write up the contract this afternoon, however I won't have the time to meet with him today. If he, or yourself, are available the day the students are to arrive back at Hogwarts, that would be perfect," Sirius answered, "I know the Headmaster wears many hats and may be tied up this until then."
Minerva did roll her eyes, "You would be correct. Would you be able to set it up so that we, the Headmaster and I, will join you at 11 o'clock that morning to go over the final details. I know the other Heads of House will be able to manage until we return."
"Excellent! I will see you and the Headmaster then," Sirius said before he stood and held out his hand in a gentile fashion.
Minerva gave Sirius a hard stare as she politely gave him her hand, which he kissed the air above it. After which he released his gentle hold on her hand and she reclaimed it.
"This has been a productive spontaneous meeting, Lord Black. Do see that future meetings are less spontaneous and more planned," Minerva sniped.
Sirius placed his hand over his heart as though he'd been wounded.
"You cut so deep!" he replied playfully.
"Clearly not deep enough," Minerva said with a small snort as she left, a small smile graced her face once her back was turned.
Harry stretched his hands and wiggled his fingers from all the writing he had to do, but refused to complain since he knew Hermione was doing way more tests than he did. The examiners did state that for simplicity that they would have him perform all the spells they needed to see for both OWL and NEWT, as some overlapped. Harry agreed, and was completely exhausted. He shouldn't have put that extra oomph when he performed his patronus spell; but the examiners were delighted and eager to inspect his patronus (who he secretly named) Prongs.
He wanted to wait for Hermione, but knew she would be a while yet, and had more to do tomorrow. He knew from their bond that she was intensely focused.
"Hey there, pup. How did it go?" Sirius asked as Harry stepped into the office.
Harry entered the office proper and noticed Sirius and Severus were waiting for him. He knew Severus would be staying in the Ministry after him and Sirius left.
"I think it went great, they loved my patronus," Harry said with a tired grin.
Sirius beamed, very proud of his godson, and clapped him lightly on the shoulder.
"I told them to owl us your results, that way you can open them when your sister gets back," Sirius said.
Harry nodded, "That's good, she'll be more excited than me."
Severus had smirked at that while the witch behind the desk huffed.
"Is something the matter, Ms. Greenling?" Sirius asked silkily.
Harry almost did a double take. He knew that was how Severus spoke, so it was a minor shock to hear it from Sirius. Although he could tell it left the witch, now known as Ms. Greenling, a little unsettled. Harry looked at the desk as saw the name placard: Clarabelle Greenling.
"Grading typically takes 1 to 2 weeks, as it is technically in between Holidays the proctors have the time which will allow them to do it quickly," she sniffed.
Harry looked at her, "Hermione got her OWL results the same day with her master, and I know they will collect all the results tomorrow."
A small bit of color flushed into the witch's face before she schooled her expression.
"Apprentice Lady Granger is different. As an apprentice it is under her master that she will learn and grow. If it weren't for the Ministry, she would be above OWLs and NEWTs as she will be a master, a mistress, herself. It is quite different than an average student," she said.
Harry didn't stop himself from rolling his eyes and crossing his arms.
"Ms. Greenling, I am aware my sister is special. She's not just an apprentice or a Lady, she's also The Brightest Witch of My Generation. I know half of the professors at Hogwarts wished they had snapped her up for their own apprenticeship," Harry sniped.
Sirius chuckled at Harry's response but nodded, "Our Hermione is greater than her station. If her status didn't leak out, she would still be the brightest witch of your generation."
"If you don't mind my asking, Mr. Potter, why did Apprentice Lady Granger hide her standing? As a regular muggleborn she would have faced the same discrimination they do, but as a Lady of Peerage she would have been treated as a Pureblood or a Half-blood at worst. I simply don't understand," Ms. Greenling pressed carefully.
"Simple," Harry said as his eyes bore into hers, "She didn't want to be treated differently. She wanted to be another Hogwarts student and earn her merits and be known for that before her Peerage."
"I see. That is quite admirable from the Apprentice Lady," she said genuinely.
"Hermione is admirable," Harry huffed with a genuine smile.
Ms. Greenling returned the wizard's smile. She had initially disliked the wizard, she believed what the Daily Prophet had reported. She thought he was full of himself and wanted the spotlight back on himself, going as far as to claim You-Know-Who was back. Yet she knew from working in the Ministry that Rita's articles should always be taken with a grain of salt. However, speaking to the boy, she was able to reach the conclusion rather quickly that Harry Potter wasn't a liar or a cheater. To her he was a boy who loved his sister and admired her.
"Will you be escorting her here tomorrow with her master?" she asked him, this time kindly.
Harry paused for a moment as though thinking before he shook his head, "No. As much as I would like to, I know I was only allowed to come here to take my own test. I know she'll pass though."
Ms. Greenling grinned at his confidence in his sister. Harry was unknowingly changing opinions of both him and his sister for the better.
"Do you know if she's testing out of Hogwarts completely?" she asked.
"Hermione isn't testing out of Hogwarts, she would like to continue the extra-curricular courses Hogwarts offers that have no NEWTs," Sirius said.
Sirius knew that Hermione would never deliberately throw her hands up and leave Harry. He knew that she was doing all she could to help and protect him. She couldn't very well protect Harry if she wasn't there when his hair brained schemes or his own rotten luck struck up.
Severus nodded, "I feel it would behoove my apprentice that she graduates with her year mates. There is no need to isolate her during a time she is meant to learn and cultivate an easy social network."
Ms. Greenling nodded at the answer. She knew that was why many students stayed at Hogwarts all 7 years. Anyone who went to Hogwarts still kept in touch with some of their year mates, even if they've left the country.
"I think it's time we've left. I'll see you around, Ms. Greenling," Sirius said.
"I'll walk with you to the floo," Severus said as he opened the door.
Hermione stretched her arms tiredly, but her face expressed that she was determined still. She had finished the rest of her OWLs and did the written portion for her NEWTs as well. She had been told that she would be doing spellcasting today, and some tomorrow. It was designed specifically for her so she didn't send herself into magical exhaustion. Thankfully she had completed all of her DADA tests, as many of those spells were rather draining.
"Alright, Apprentice Granger," Madame Marchbanks said, "Now I will be your proctor for your Transfiguration exams. I will be putting objects in front of you and tell you what I want you to turn them into. As taking both OWL and NEWT at the same time is an irregular occurrence, I will be building up from simple transfigurations to more complex transfigurations. Are there any questions?" she asked kindly.
Hermione almost said no, but the witch paused.
"Professor Marchbanks, would you like to see my animagus form now or at the end?" she asked.
The witch's blue-grey eyes twinkled merrily. It wasn't often that a student offered to show off their form for their test.
"Apprentice Granger, I would enjoy seeing your animagus form now," Madame Marchbanks stated, "If you're able to do so without your wand, you will get extra points. If you choose to do this, please place it on the table."
Hermione placed her wand on the table and was quickly on all fours, sitting regally, and swung her tail over her feet. Although the witch was trying to focus only on her task, she could smell the elderly witch. She didn't have the smell that one typically associated with the elderly, but did have an undertone of patchouli. She was still learning what certain emotions smelled like.
"Oh my! Excellent, most excellent," she said, "You may turn back now."
Hermione was back in human form and ready for the next task.
"Now, I will start with this," she said as she placed a tortoise on the table, "Turn him into a teapot and then back."
The curly haired witch twirled her wand, knowing she would get more points for detail. She did this for every item and animal the elder witch placed in front of her. Everything she transfigured had such fine detail that would make most weep with envy.
"Congratulations, Apprentice Granger. The last is typically human transfiguration, but you did that for me first," she said and the corner of her lip twitched up, "Please stay here and I will send in the next proctor."
It was two hours later that Hermione emerged from the testing rooms. She was slightly exhausted, but refused to let it show.
"Apprentice," Severus greeted her.
"Master," Hermione replied with a nod of her head and walked to his side. She learned from last time to not babble so much in the event that there was someone with him.
"Apprentice Lady Granger, we look forward to seeing you tomorrow for 8am," Ms. Greenling said with a smile.
"Thank you, ma'am," Hermione said with a slightly tired smile, "I'll see you tomorrow."
With that, the duo left the office and started to walk towards the apparition point. They had to go up a level, and thankfully the elevator was empty.
"Where to next, master?" Hermione asked him, holding onto the hand strap so she didn't go tumbling about.
"Home, of course," Severus answered.
Once they reached the apparition point Severus gave Hermione his arm to hold. The curly haired witch took it with no hesitation.
CRACK
They arrived in Severus's living room. Once there, Severus let go and moved to the kitchen.
"Master?" Hermione asked feeling wrong footed.
"I'm making a pot of tea, Mia. I want to discuss something with you, but I admit I'm going to need good tea in my system before I do so," Severus assured his witch, "Not that swill they offer at the Ministry. Even the purebloods have their elves bring their favorite blends."
"Can I do anything to help?" She called out to him.
Severus took a moment to reply, "Yes. You can sit your pretty bottom on my couch. You may rest your legs on it as well."
Hermione pursed her lips and took off her cloak and boots before sitting on the couch and stretching her legs out on it. Thankfully not as bad as Hooch did the last time she was here, but Hermione did take up 2 of the 3 cushions. She took the next few minutes to close her eyes and relax while she waited for Severus to return with tea.
Severus gently cleared his throat, and Hermione's eyes popped open and she reached for the offered cup.
"Thank you," she murmured.
He nodded in response before sitting himself in the chair. They sat in silence for a bit, both nursing their tea.
"I wanted to apologize," Severus said with a mournful look on his face.
"What do you mean?" the witch asked looking at him, but still nursing her cuppa.
"I shouldn't have" he paused for a moment, "I shouldn't have allowed the blowjob to happen. Giving you pleasure is one thing, something that probably also shouldn't have happened. I'm sorry."
Hermione frowned, "I'm not. I asked for it, both things. I decided to straddle you and initiate it."
"Yes, but I should have stopped you. You being the legal age in both worlds shouldn't have given me the go ahead," he replied, "I was disgusted with myself for finding you attractive at all as a fourth year. Even knowing you were Of age at the time…"
"The attraction was returned, completely. Viktor didn't even ask me to the ball until he was sure I was Of age. I have a feeling that magic knows. Luna and Greg have spoken of Wild Magic, and how it's basically sentient. Something a muggleborn wouldn't know, and frankly aren't told. You said you weren't attracted to me until I was magically Of age."
Severus paused to think about her response, "I suppose it helps a bit to know that my magic refused to see you as a witch rather than sexless student until you were Of age. It doesn't mean that I should have acted."
Hermione snorted, "There's a 13 year age gap between my parents and they met when she was 19."
"Yes, they met when she was already an adult," Severus stressed.
"You didn't see me, as a woman, until I became of age. You didn't become sexually interested in me until I was Of age, legal, legally mature," Hermione huffed, "You might as well have been interacting with a bucktoothed drone who happened to be friends with Harry. Then after I became of age, something happened that made you see me as a witch. With that said, I know regardless of how enticing you may, or may not, have found me; you never would have sought me out for a relationship. In fact, you didn't know that it would be a thing that went with the apprenticeship bond."
She took a sip of her tea.
"Severus, I acted. I would possibly be more hurt if you had rejected me," Hermione stressed, her eyes open and genuine, "I would have worried needlessly that you weren't attracted to me or that you were with me only because you were stuck with me. We haven't done anything more since that time besides kiss."
Severus let her response sink in before replying, "That does make me feel a bit better, but that doesn't assuage the guilt."
Hermione got up and repositioned herself on the couch, closer to him, leaning over the arm of the couch.
"Severus, I did it. I initiated, I started, I begged. You are not at fault for giving into me. I am Of age. I am legal in both worlds. The difference is that magical people live much longer than those without magic. Yes, you are my first and will be in all of my sexual exploits, except masturbation. I accepted that I will be your wife. You agreed to the dynamic that I would prefer to have. Your mother and Ella agreed to avoid those who would complain, I will be in the time chamber until I'm 25. I will miss you fiercely during that time. I will pull you aside to snog the living daylights out of you when you visit. I will hopefully convince you to shag me by the time I get out." She finished with a furious blush across her cheeks and even her nose.
Severus blushed at the blatant layout. He knew she would most likely miss him, but not to the degree she laid out for him. He knew she was passionate and felt deeply about things.
"Severus, I know we haven't said it yet, but" she fiddled with the hem of her robe, "I love you," she said, the blush still on her cheeks, "I know you might not feel the same way about me, yet. But I do, I love you. I'm not ashamed of it. You don't have to say it back."
Severus blushed harder at her admittance, "I…" his Adam's apple bobbed and he looked at the floor before looking at her, "I love you too, Mia. It started out as lust, you're an extremely attractive witch, you're passionate, and I respect your brilliance, intelligence, and integrity. It's incredibly sexy. It's a bonus that I know how deadly you can be. The time I get to spend with you is the highlight of my day."
Hermione beamed at him and shyly reached her hand over the couch's arm. Severus crossed the distance with his own and held it gently and ran his thumb across the back of hers.
They shyly looked at each other for several minutes, looking away and looking back as the emotions they were feeling were so intense they subconsciously were aware they needed the quick breaks. Thus, they sat, holding hands, while they slowly sipped their tea.
After some time, they made their way back to 12 Grimmauld Place. When they entered through the floo they were met by Harry.
"I felt you lagging, I managed to get you a cuppa," Harry leaned in and spoke lowly, "I had Thimi put in a mild restorative potion in it."
Hermione beamed at her brother, "Thanks."
Severus tutted behind her. She playfully rolled her eyes and waved her wand over the cup to show that Harry had been honest and there was only a restorative potion in it. Next, she smelled the aroma that was the delectable drink and sighed happily. She quickly took a sip and noticed it was the perfect temperature. She was able to make quick work of the cup and felt a little better already.
"And you have more tomorrow," Harry said taking the empty cup from her.
"I have more tomorrow," Hermione said with a nod.
"Mrs. Weasley made a bigger supper than normal, she said you'll need your strength," Harry said.
"Molly would be correct in this instance, food will help you restore your reserves, which you will need for tomorrow," Severus said.
"Yes, master," Hermione said with half a smile.
She made her way towards the kitchen when a yell came from the stairs.
"Mia!" the twins shouted.
"How did it go?"
"What did they have you do first?"
"Was it hard?"
"Are you nastily exhausted?" they asked.
"It went well, I can't tell you, it was challenging but not particularly hard," Hermione answered honestly as she walked past them towards the kitchen, "I'm exhausted but not nastily. Thankfully I did my Defense portion already or I probably would be."
Harry chuckled, "I found it exhausting, but I also put in extra oomph when casting my patronus."
Hermione shook her head with a grin, "I take it the examiners loved it?"
"They were extremely happy with him," Harry confirmed.
"Did you get your test results yet?" Hermione asked as they walked towards the kitchen.
"No, if I have, I don't have them," Harry answered with a laugh.
"Oh?" Hermione looked at him amused and arch a brow.
"Sirius told them to owl it to us, so you could be there when I get them," he explained.
"Okay, are you excited?" Hermione asked.
"Not as much as you. I think it would be awesome though since then I'd be able to actually help tutor people," Harry replied, "Including the NEWT students."
"You do that already, Harry," Hermione quipped.
"Yeah, but I'll at least have a paper that says I'm kinda qualified!"
As the house was winding down for the night, Hermione had excused herself first and Harry followed. He wanted to catch her before she fell asleep. He easily made his way to her room and took what was quickly becoming his seat.
"Hey Mia, is there something else bothering you besides the rest of your tests tomorrow?" Harry asked as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Harry, I want you, my master, and Luna to visit me," she said looking at him almost sadly.
"Really?" Harry asked with some excitement.
"Really. I will miss you all terribly. I know I will change, but I don't want those changes to be complete surprises," Hermione admitted, "I know maturing while I'm in there is inevitable, and I'm already your big sister, but…" she trailed off.
"Mia, you will always be my big sister, only now you'll be more than almost a year older than me," Harry said easily.
"Harry, we typically feel each other's emotional state. For me it'll be slow with almost no change. You'll be getting 7 years worth of emotions in 7 hours. I'm worried," she said.
"Like you said, it'll only be 7 hours for me. I'll probably need a nap when we get back," he admitted, "but I think that's a small price to pay for 7 years of your life."
The curly haired witch chewed on her lip, "What if I change too much while I'm in there? I wish Sirius would have rented the room and we could both learn at the same time. But from what I gather it's mostly because there will only be one sleeping quarters in the room."
Harry snorted, "if you do change that much, I'll get to meet you twice. Besides, Mrs. Weasley would probably be okay with it, but I think Mrs. Malfoy won't."
Hermione giggled, "Just because she's not a Traditionalist, doesn't mean she would be fine with you making it a co-ed sleeping quarters. Gay or not."
"I think it'll be easier being close to you and a few steps away," Harry said quietly.
"It wasn't easy when I had to wait for the cursebreakers to take care of you. I wanted to go in there and help, but you were with professionals," she admitted, "I think that's as close as I'll get to waiting in a waiting room for you to give birth."
Harry burst out laughing, "What makes you think I'd be the one giving birth?"
"Isn't it obvious, Harry?" she drawled, "Your womanly hips and bubble butt of course."
The devilish grin on her face was pure mischief. Harry laughed more, "Womanly hips?! Bubble butt maybe!"
"Could bounce a pence on it!" Hermione continued.
Harry got up and grabbed the nearest pillow before attacking her with it.
"Bounce this off my butt!" Harry said while laughing.
Hermione quickly grabbed the other pillow and proceeded to hit her brother back. Their pillow fight lasted a few minutes, but they were both laughing at the end. Both were flopped on opposite sides of the bed, but their heads met in the middle.
"I love you, Mia," Harry said quietly.
"I love you too, Harry. We should get some sleep," she said with a large smile.
"You should get some sleep. I'm not the one with practical exams tomorrow," Harry said.
"I have 3 more practical portions left. Most of today was written. I did 10 written subjects today," Hermione sighed.
"10!? How is your hand not cramping?" He asked incredulously.
"I take a lot of notes daily," she said with a shrug, "There's all my classes, then homework, and some self-study. I take notes so I can review it later or look for more information. Besides the questions on the tests themselves aren't that long, it takes more time to read the questions than to answer, I just write detailed answers."
Her brother sighed exasperatedly, "I guess! Which ones?"
Hermione smiled, "Astronomy, Charms, Herbology, Potions, Transfiguration, Arithmancy, Muggle Studies, Ancient Runes, Ancient Study, and Care of Magical Creatures."
"Is there anything you're not taking, besides Divination?" Harry snorted.
"Alchemy," Hermione said seriously, "But I'd have to wait for enough students to want it to study. I plan to ask Ella since we'll have the time. I know my master knows a little bit, but he's not a master in it. I would ask Dumbledore, but we both know I won't."
Harry nodded, agreeing that going to Dumbledore just wasn't an option. They didn't trust him now; they wouldn't trust him alone with her like that. Hermione was knowledgeable, but not confident enough to even try to take on Dumbledore in self-defense.
There was a small tension.
"That's not all is there?" Harry asked quietly.
"No" Hermione sighed, "I'm worried. Hogwarts'… defenses aren't as they should be. But if I do or say anything to correct them or improve them, then people would know it's my affinity. Masters with my affinity went to the ground so people couldn't use them. If people find out, I'd be in danger. But if I do nothing, then Hogwarts would be in danger. Yet, Dumbledore hasn't reached out, with his many connections, to fix it. Ever. I'm worried what would happen to me if he knew," she answered softly, barely audible.
"Will you tell me what it is?" Harry asked.
"Only when your mind is fully protected," Hermione said, "When you have a complete firm frame of mind. I know Dad worked you hard, if you're okay with it I'll have my master test you later."
Harry sighed, "I don't want him to try to rummage through my head, but protecting you is more important."
"Thanks," Hermione said softly.
"For you, Mia? Always," Harry replied just as quiet.
The next morning was quiet; Molly not having finished the rest of breakfast. She was able to get up early and make some tea, coffee, and porridge, while having bacon frying. Cedrella made coffee and was finishing the Daily Prophet.
"Morning, Mrs. Weasley, Ella," Hermione said as she took a seat.
"Good morning, dear. Where is Harry?" Molly asked as she made Hermione a bowl of porridge and some fresh bacon.
"He's still asleep, I think he's recovering from all the spell casting he had to do yesterday. I didn't want to wake him," the hazel eyed witch answered. She waited for the silent confirmation that the food wasn't tampered with before eating.
"Why are you up so early?" Molly asked as she wiped her hands on her apron.
"I have 3 practical portions of my NEWTs today," she answered.
"Three?" Molly asked.
Hermione nodded, "Yes. Five were written only. I already have my Defense NEWT."
"What do you have today?" Cedrella said as she sipped her coffee.
"Charms, Herbology, and Ancient Runes," she answered.
"And how many will it be total?" the elder witch asked with slyly.
"Eleven," she answered bluntly.
"Eleven?" Molly asked surprised.
"It would have been 12 if Alchemy had been available," Hermione huffed.
"I know you won't like it, but while I teach you, we can cover Alchemy and you can take your NEWT on that after your WOMBAT," Cedrella said.
Hermione sighed but nodded.
"Don't fret too much, many who want to learn Alchemy when it isn't available due to demand learn after graduating with tutors," Cedrella informed the younger witch.
"That does make me feel a little better," the witch said with a sigh, "I take it we will cover WOMBAT material as well?"
"Yes. It will be mandatory and will give you an edge in the Ministry," Cedrella answered as she took a sip.
"WOMBAT? Who takes their WOMBAT test nowadays besides squibs?" Molly asked with a disdainful huff.
"Quite a few of the Traditionalists," Cedrella answered, "The more they know, the better they can navigate the Ministry. I know Arthur took it, as did Bill, Percy, and Charlie."
Molly was quite for a few minutes, "Yes. I suppose I forgot."
"Molly, I'm being genuine when I ask this, when was the last time you saw a Healer?" Cedrella asked.
Molly was surprised at the question, "I suppose it's been 8 years now. I can make most of the inoculation potions and most others the kids need."
Cedrella furrowed her brows, "Molly, would you be opposed if I had a friend, a Healer, check you over?"
Molly made a face, "Who?"
Cedrella took a breath, "Well I have 2 options for you. One is a goblin, as they check more in depth than a typical Healer would. The other is Andromeda Tonks."
Molly pursed her lips. While she would prefer to never let the goblins examen her, she also knew they were good. She heard from Bill they even checked for blood curses and would be able to call in a few cursebreakers to take care of it. The issue had always been that they couldn't afford anything like that.
"I suppose I'd be willing to see a goblin Healer," she answered.
Cedrella nodded as though relieved, "I will set it up for after the kids return to Hogwarts."
Hermione watched the byplay and kept her questions to herself by eating some more porridge. Hermione had to take many potions when she was introduced to the wizarding world. Her parents had always been great about being on top of those things. When they found out that the wizarding world had their own health issues that muggles typically didn't contract, they all but demanded to go to St Mungos. She, and her parents, had been reassured that Madam Pomfrey was qualified and would be taking care of all the students' health needs.
Perhaps she would ask Severus if Madam Pomfrey had been compromised. There were many things that she felt Madam Pomfrey didn't do. Hogwarts's charter stated that all witches and wizards attending must have a yearly check up by the school nurse. She knew that all the witches had their check-up, but she wasn't sure if Harry ever did. She'd ask later.
"Apprentice," Severus said behind her.
Hermione quickly swallowed before speaking, "Master?"
"We will be leaving once you've finished," the dark wizard stated.
"Yes, master," she said, as she finished the last bits of her breakfast.
"Severus, would you mind going with me to Gringotts for a bit?" Cedrella asked.
The wizard raised a brow at her in question.
"While our intelligent witch is taking the rest of her NEWTs I would like to go to Gringotts to finalize some things and set up an appointment for another matter," Cedrella answered.
Severus stared at the witch for a moment thinking, "If you believe your errands will take less than 2 hours, I will have the time."
"Excellent," Cedrella said, "I'll leave with you so things go smoother."
Hermione smiled at the elder witch. They would be flooing to the Leaky Cauldron before walking to the Ministry. While they could easily floo to the Ministry, Severus thought the time it took to walk there from the Leaky should be enough time to let the calming potion take effect and let her walk off some anxious energy.
"Apprentice Lady Granger, I'm glad to see you back," the witch behind the desk said, "They are ready for you."
Today she was wearing a smaller witch's hat with a blue ribbon. This one suited her much better than the first one Hermione had seen her in.
"Thank you, Ms. Greenling," Hermione answered with a smile.
Hermione had never been more thankful that almost all desks in the offices had name placards on them. The curly haired witch followed her and entered to take the rest of her NEWTs (sans Alchemy).
"Morning, Belle," Cedrella said.
The witch behind the desk snorted before giving her a wry smile, "Ella. Is this your next poach?"
"Guilty of all charges," Cedrella said with a toothy grin, "She's very promising."
Clarabelle nodded with a satisfied smile, "Don't be surprised if she doesn't take your offer. She's too good for the Ministry."
Severus pointedly looked at the witch, "Meaning?"
"Ella is notorious for only wanting the best. While I don't know what they do down there, I do know that Ella will check their scores and if she likes them, she poaches them for the Department," Clarabelle said.
"To be recruited or considered you must be intelligent. You need to remember important facts and know why they're relevant. One must also be quick on their feet and with their wand. I also read the opinion essays as it helps me understand who truly cares about certain subjects. Among other things," Cedrella said.
Clarabelle rolled her eyes. She knew the Department of Mystery had a list of things they looked for in potential staff. Most people also aren't supposed to know who works for that department, but if asked directly are allowed to state they work there. She knew they were not to offer that information. Besides those who worked in the Ministry knew that the Ministry had no bearing over the Department of Mysteries.
"Send Severus a memo, I have to finalize some paperwork," Cedrella said.
When Cedrella received a nod of acknowledgement, she turned to leave. Severus held the door open for her, and she nodded at him before walking through.
"Next!" called a goblin.
"Greetings Teller, I have business with Daggertooth and Silverclaw." Cedrella said.
The goblin narrowed his eyes at her, "Name?"
"Cedrella Weasley," Cedrella stated calmly, "And this is Severus Snape, he is involved in my meeting with Silverclaw."
"Are they supposed to meet with you at the same time or for separate issues?" the goblin asked.
"Separate issues, but both of them being in the room will mean I conclude part of my business faster, saving time," Cedrella answered.
What went unsaid, but understood was: Time is Money.
"I will have them both informed, sit in the seating area, and wait for your name to be called," the goblin said with ill hidden distain.
They were soon seen into a small conference room. On one side 2 goblins were already seated, one had a binder with paperwork and the other had a thick notebook of sorts. Most likely a very full and busy agenda with detailed scheduling.
Severus and Cedrella put their fists over their chest as they greeted them.
"May your crafts fill your coffers," Severus said, "as your enemies know regret and anguish" Cedrella finished with him.
"May your enemies grow poorer as you reap their rewards," the goblins replied together.
They nodded with begrudging respect. The goblins respected the potions master for respecting their customs. Cedrella was one to pick and choose which goblins received the traditional greeting. If they weren't a manager, healer, or higher, she was politely cold. It suited them fine as they were also of the opinion that respect was earned. She had also earned their respect, she was cunning, but not cruel.
There were few wand wielders who upheld the traditional greetings. It was polite, respectful, and diplomatic. It was written in the last Peace Treaty, a few hundred years ago. Younger wand wielders were typically ignorant of this. However, those that made effort, were given preferential treatment beyond typical distain. Wand wielders who were creative with their greetings were favored clientele.
"Mrs. Weasley, what can we do for you?" Daggertooth asked.
"I need to set up a healer's appointment for my daughter-in-law for this January 7th. I also need to go over some finalizing details for use of the Time Room," she replied.
"Is there a reason you wish me to handle this appointment?" Daggertooth pressed.
"Yes. I know something is wrong with my daughter-in-law that is beyond the typical Pureblood stupidity. She's shown some excessive agitation for tradition now as opposed to 10 years ago. I mentioned a test and she almost started a tirade of sorts until I reminded her, her husband and three sons had taken it. She's too young and magically inclined to be exhibiting dementia, I have reason to believe she's been tampered with. I don't think a regular health scan will catch whatever is causing this change in behavior," the witch stated in a business manner.
Daggertooth listened and then checked their planner.
"I have that date available, and if you want the extensive check, I recommend you come in for 1 in the afternoon that day," he said.
"That will be fine, thank you for your time, Daggertooth," Cedrella replied, "May your enemies tremble when they hear your name, and your patients exhibit the exemplar skill you weave when mending them."
Daggertooth nodded, "May your wealth grow as your enemies dwindle. You will receive an owl with the time."
With that the goblin left, leaving Silverclaw on the opposite side of the table.
"What other details must Gringotts know and prepare for," Silverclaw said gutturally.
"Master Snape has informed me that his apprentice will wish for visitors while we're in the room. I would like to add four names to list, and will of course pay for each person. Three will only visit every half hour. One, possibly two, will be entering with, for an hour," Cedrella said.
Silverclaw threw her a dirty look, "You had me prepare for three, with three chairs."
"I did. It will now be four chairs. Severus Snape, Sirius Black, Harry Potter, and Luna Lovegood. Ginevra Weasley will be entering for an hour, and will be escorted from the bank by her father, Arthur Weasley. Severus Snape, is Apprentice Lady Granger's master. Harry Potter is her brother in blood. Luna Lovegood…" Cedrella turned to look at Severus as she wasn't sure what to say about the young witch.
"Luna Lovegood is her best friend, but also is considered hers." Severus said, "She is clairvoyant, but my apprentice and her brother have accepted Miss Lovegood as a permanent fixture in their lives, as have I."
Silverclaw nodded in understanding. It was deeply understood in the wizarding world that certain people were born with gifts. Some of them were borderline seer like, yet they weren't. The people with the gift usually didn't know what to do or why until they saw or felt their calling. Luna Lovegood was known to them; she was respectful for a witch who didn't follow their customs. However, in exchange for the niceties her father and her always brought specialty meat for them from their expeditions. The little witch occasionally gave tellers helpful information, she had never been wrong. It would bear to know and inform the Director that the Lovegood witch had affixed herself to the Apprentice.
"I understand as her master you're heavily involved and this is most irregular. Will her parents be joining you?" he asked.
"No. They were informed and know their presence would be a cause for attention. They are aware of the need to be discreet," Severus stated.
The goblin nodded as discretion was needed for this.
"I have it so the house-elves are to have special allowances for the seven hours. They will have to bleed on the stone presented, but this will allow them to enter at will in the designated spots only. Which will be outside of the Temporal Training Room, or in the room while in the room," Silverclaw informed them.
"I want my apprentice to keep up her physical training while in the room," Severus said.
Cedrella looked at him and smirked, "You want me to do drills?"
Severus looked at her through the corner of his eye, "Among other things. My apprentice does an hour of physical training at minimum a day. We spar three to five days a week. As she's on holiday, it's currently twice a week, but she still makes sure to do the rest on her own."
"Spar? Not duel?" Cedrella asked looking at him with a small furrow of her brows.
The goblin looked at him with anticipation. He was clearly eager to hear of a human's physical training. More so since he dealt with lazy humans most days.
"We spar. I have had less time to teach her proper dueling. She learned some dueling from the Krums. She fights dirty, so her spell fighting would be equally as dirty I expect," Severus said in clipped tones, evading details.
The goblin narrowed his eyes, "What do you mean she fights dirty?"
Severus stared at the goblin, "She fights to win. She doesn't adhere to typical boxing or martial arts rules. She fights as though she were in a muggle brawl, hits harder than the men too. Her spellwork is top notch, and her aim is just as good."
"We are aware of mixed martial arts, Master Snape. We goblins do not consider that dirty, merely using your prowess to the best of one's ability," Silverclaw said with finality.
Severus nodded in deference to the goblin. If the honorable warrior goblin race said she wasn't fighting dirty, then his witch wasn't fighting dirty.
"Is she aware of how to fight with a weapon?" Silverclaw asked.
"She is not aware of how to fight with blades," Severus answered carefully.
"Would you like her to?" Silverclaw asked delicately, steepling his fingers.
Severus paused and thought about how she was in the middle of a duel, and how she basically took like a duck to water with the Nozh Tochka. Her expression of feral and ferocious when fighting physically or magically, was an incredible turn on. She would be glorious. His witch would love every minute of it too.
"Yes," Severus said silkily.
"If you agree to arrive half an hour early, I will arrange for one of the masters to gauge her fighting skill. While she has permission to use her wand in the Temporal Training Room, she won't for the dojo," Silverclaw said.
Cedrella made sure her mouth wasn't agape. The goblins never offered to train a witch or wizard unless specifically asked. All the Blacks had mandatory standing appointments to learn once they graduated Hogwarts. If someone married in, they weren't taught unless asked.
"We will arrive for the assessment," Severus replied evenly.
"Should she pass, would you prefer her being training in any specific weapon?" Silverclaw asked.
"Knives and daggers. They're simple, readily available, and easy to hide," Cedrella said.
"If she has the time, being the overachiever that she is, I think she would also benefit from learning how to fight with a staff or polearm," Severus said nodding his agreement.
"Why?" Cedrella asked in surprise, almost unable to help herself.
"If push comes to shove, and she needs to fight without killing her opponent, knocking them out quick and hard would be best. She can easily transfigure something into a pole or polearm," Severus answered, "If she needs to defend herself from a creature, a knife won't cut it. A spear however, might."
"If the martial master approves of her and, if she passes the assessment, depending on her progress she may be presented with a weapon," Silverclaw informed them.
"We understand. We're simply that assured in her skills," Severus replied.
"Understood. I will inform the martial master that he has an appointment at on December 30th at 9 in the morning," Silverclaw said.
Severus and Cedrella nodded their heads in thanks, knowing it was also the end of the meeting.
"May your wealth grow," Cedrella said "And opportunities arise with maximum benefit," Severus finished.
Severus was pleased he made it back to the Ministry with time to spare. It was desolate in-between Holidays and the New Year, that time of year when time itself seemed almost irrelevant. Severus made his way leisurely to the office.
"Ah! Professor Snape, what timing. I was just about to send you a memo," Clarabelle said upon seeing him arrive.
Severus nodded, "So it would seem."
"Would you like to sit or stand?" she asked him.
Severus looked at her for a moment, "I will stand. If she will be but a few minutes, I see no reason not to."
Clarabelle nodded in response, "Do you think Dumbledore will be teaching Alchemy any time soon?"
Severus almost glared at her as he hated small talk.
"I will have to speak with the other Heads of House to see how many students are interested. If the number is less than 10 or 12, he refuses. They are informed that they need an O on their potions, transfiguration, and charms OWL to even request it," Severus answered.
"Does it look promising?" she asked, her tone almost wistful.
"This year's fifth years seem to be managing it better than the last batch," Severus answered.
Her face was passive as she nodded.
Thankfully at that moment Hermione opened the door as she left the examination room. She quietly made her way to her master's side.
"Apprentice?" Severus pressed, noticing the atypical behavior.
"I'm afraid I might have failed," she said quietly, folding her hands in front of her demurely.
"What makes you think so?" he asked.
"When I was casting, I think I overpowered a few charms. I hope I didn't destroy some of the building," she winced.
"You damaged some of the exam room?" Clarabelle asked stunned.
Hermione nodded bashfully and shifted her feet uneasily.
Severus however smirked. It would let those in the Ministry know that she was powerful as she was brilliant.
"What spell did the damage?" Severus asked.
"The cleaning charm. It removed the mess, but also removed some of the flooring. It's now a marble green," she answered.
Severus blinked, amazed that his apprentice for all her brilliance could be… silly.
"Ah, Apprentice Granger! I'm glad I caught you before you left," Professor Tofty said as he opened the door.
"Yes, Professor Tofty?" Hermione asked with a red flush on her cheeks, clearly ashamed of herself.
"Would you be able to come in and do the rest of the floor? It appears the green marble is the original flooring and someone just got happy with the cement!" Professor Tofty said excitedly.
Hermione blinked in surprise, "Uh, y-yes sir," she looked at Severus, "If my master will allow it."
"Of course, I would also like to see this," Severus answered with a quirk of his lip.
Clarabelle was greatly amused and would be checking out the 'new' flooring when they left. If anything, the young witch had improved the building, but she didn't know that just yet.
Professor Tofty led them through the examination room to the practical testing site.
"Here please," he asked excitedly.
Hermione nodded demurely as she was still upset with herself. The curly haired witch soon had her wand in her hand and point cast, "Alta Tergeo." During the exam she had done so silently for extra points, however with Professor Tofty asking for a wider range, casting verbally made it stronger.
Before them cement was removed from the floor exposing beautiful malachite marble flooring. Hermione cast it two more times, leaving the original flooring for all to see. With the floor fully exposed they were able to see gold runes laid into the marble.
The three wand wielders looked and read them fascinated, walking around to read them all.
Professor Tofty was practically vibrating, "This is amazing! Look here! Othala and Algiz combined! To keep the spells in this room. The Ministry had forgotten what it was we used to help contain this room. I should ask Griselda, she would know. She said she remembered the flooring being beautiful, but said she was too young to understand the runes and by the time she graduated they had cemented all the floors."
Severus quirked his lip up, clearly proud of his witch.
"Will my apprentice be receiving any compensation for this?" Severus asked tentatively and silky.
"Of course! I'll speak with Griselda about a proper amount, unless you're interested in something else?" Professor Tofty replied.
Severus looked at Hermione and quirked up an eyebrow as it was to be her reward.
"I would be interested, if it would be possible, to be introduced to someone who could teach me how to summon a Family Grimoire. I know most families have a place of honor for their Grimoires, but I also know in cases where it's missing, stolen, or destroyed there's a ritual I can perform to summon it. However, the books all say that it's specific to the user, and it won't tell me how to find my own," Hermione admitted.
Both of Severus's eyebrows lifted up high at the request. It was worth more than galleons. However, as a Master in his field he knew that knowledge was just as great a currency. It was also something he didn't know, as his mother was disowned and they were specific family secrets. Additionally at some point in his time actually working for the Dark Lord that he tried both the Black and Malfoy rituals, and while the Black one granted him a small book for being distantly related, the Malfoy granted him nothing.
"A most surprising and unusual request, Apprentice Granger. I believe I will speak with Madame Marchbanks; she would know who to go to, but it would be best to have an inheritance test at Gringotts. They use blood magic on a tapestry so you can put it on your wall, also to accommodate for how large or confusing a family is, but ever growing," Professor Tofty said, "We will give you the money for the Tapestry in the meantime."
"Thank you very much, Professor Tofty," Hermione chirped happily.
"Thank you very much, my dear!" Professor Tofty exclaimed just as happily, "Give me a moment and I'll be back with the galleon and 3 sickles."
The elderly wizard returned after some time with a small money pouch and gently but firmly pressed it into her hand. He gave her a serious look, one that said to be careful. Hermione grabbed it and nodded feeling the importance of it.
"Would you like to stop by Gringotts before we return?" Severus asked as they made their way to the floo. Hermione was glad to note that she couldn't hear what the witch was saying to the teller. Most of the time when she arrived at Gringotts she was able to avoid a line or was distracted enough to not pay attention to that. Not that she did anyways as her parents taught her very early on that it was rude.
"Next!"
Hermione and Severus stepped forward, Severus a bit behind her.
"Name?"
"Hermione Granger."
"State your business."
"Greetings teller, I would like to take an inheritance test please," Hermione stated.
The teller leaned over the stand, "Do you have the payment?" he asked carefully.
Hermione gently took out the pouch and passed it over to the goblin, sensing that this was a peculiar thing.
The goblin took the pouch and carefully spilled the contents on his ledger. He seemed to be inspecting something a little more than simply counting coins. The teller then put everything back into the pouch and handed it back to get gently but firmly.
"All seems to be in order, you will be called from the waiting area," he said, pointing to the area they were to be seated.
Severus and Hermione were quiet, sensing that this was something that skirted the laws or was a big secret. Severus was glad that as curious as she was, his apprentice had the good sense to wait and ask.
They were both soon extremely glad they didn't say anything while waiting as they were soon joined by another client, Goyle Sr.
"Hello Snape, fancy seeing you here. This must be your apprentice?" Goyle Sr. hedged.
Severus nodded, "Yes, this is my apprentice Lady Hermione Granger."
"Jude Goyle, Apprentice Lady Granger," Jude held out his hand in a gentile fashion.
Hermione gently gave him her hand, their skin barely touching, and he brought it to his lips and kissed the air just above her knuckles. As he was doing so Hermione noticed his lord's ring.
"Pleasure to meet you, Lord Goyle." Hermione replied, "Would you happen to be Gregory Goyle's father?"
"I am. Please, none of that Lord stuff. I only use it when I have to. You can call me Mr. Goyle or Jude. Greg tells me a lot about you and Mr. Potter. He says you're nice to him, that you started out as 'study buddies'. I have to admit at first, I just wanted him to get close to you, but the more he writes the more I realize that you're a true friend to him. Slytherin make true friends, despite politicking," he chuckled, "My boy struggles to read, even with tutors. You both helping him has really brought out a confidence in him. He says that he's been getting better grades and understanding magic. He says that he thinks with your help he'll pass OWLs and if he gets at least 3 Es, he's decided to stay for NEWTs."
"Then please, Apprentice Granger or Hermione. Greg has become a good friend of mine. I was honestly a little nervous about that. That he would be in trouble for spending time with me," Hermoine said.
"If it were another muggleborn, maybe. I don't think you have dirty blood, I just think muggleborn are a bit… trashy. They don't know how to act in public, and they're constantly judging our way of life. Most are just very ignorant and don't seem to understand, which makes it worse. I don't want my son to end up like that or learn bad manners," Jude answered honestly.
A lightbulb went on in Hermione's mind, "I understand and must admit that I was like that first year. Muggle chess for example, you move the pieces yourself. If you take their piece, you simply move it to the side of the board. It's a very quiet game. When I found out the chess pieces destroy each other, I was appalled. If I took or lost a piece, I had to hear the pieces heckling me. My quiet game was suddenly loud and explosive."
Jude nodded thoughtfully, "I suppose when you compare the things, I can see how we would seem uncivil to a new muggleborn. Like a safe book and a book that will yell or scream."
Hermione gave Jude a small smile, very much like her master's, causing him to chuckle at the resemblance.
"Granger." Called a goblin.
Hermione and Severus stood and nodded at Jude Goyle before leaving.
"Follow me." He commanded.
The goblin took a few turns before they were standing next to an open door.
"Elder Oak will see you now."
Hermione and Severus stepped into the room. There was a long table with a blank tapestry spread out on it. On the tapestry were some bones, cloves, and some sort of ash. On the other side of the table was a goblin unlike any Hermione had seen before.
His eyes were peridot green, his ears pointed back and slightly down. Unlike the other goblins she had seen, he had a salt and pepper full beard, that was neatly trimmed. He also had a full head of thick hair, slate grey, and it was styled. He had two thick braids on either side of his head that went back into a large upper ponytail, leaving the bottom half loose and long, easily fanning over his shoulders.
The goblin wore leather cuirass, black metal shoulder armor, and had long arm bracers that were made of the same black metal with leather underneath. He looked like a Goblin Viking.
"Apprentice Hermione Granger, well met," Elder Oak said, his voice deep and raspy. It was very pleasing to the ears for both apprentice and master.
"Well met, Elder Oak," Hermione said with a bow of her chest and fist over her heart, Severus with her.
"Come closer, the door will close behind you," he said.
As they reached the table her looked at her and nodded thoughtfully.
"Apprentice Hermione Granger, the payment if you will?" he said, holding his hand out.
Hermione carefully placed the pouch in his hands.
Oak gently spilled the pouch onto the table. In addition to the galleon and 3 sickles was a phoenix feather, a vial of powdered moonstone, a vial of black liquid that had a slight rainbow sheen, a bit of occamy shell, and something else that Hermione couldn't pinpoint.
"I see you were smart and didn't open the payment pouch to check on your own before coming here. A galleon, 3 sickles, a phoenix feather, powdered moonstone, kraken ink, occamy shell, and mummified demon flesh submerged in elvish honey," he said.
"Now. I'm going to need you to bleed into this bowl," he said handing her a small and shallow bowl, "Do you want to cut yourself, or would you prefer that I do so for you?" he asked not unkindly.
"I will cut myself. I don't want to presume, but do you have a blade I may use?" she answered.
Oak's lip quirked up as he passed her a goblin silver knife. He might actually have respect for the young apprentice.
Hermione nodded and put the bowl down for a moment as she then took the knife and quickly slashed her left palm if a bit deeply, to ensure she bled enough. Her nose lifted into a slight sneer from the pain, but she ignored it and quickly grabbed the bowl and bled into it. Once it almost reached the top, Oak pulled a rag out from his pocket.
"That's good, now wrap your hand in this rag. It's soaked in murtlap essence and honey, it'll heal your wound," he instructed.
He took a pinch of the ash and mixed it into the blood with a glass stirring rod before tossing in the phoenix feather. He then turned and placed the occamy shell in a stone mortar. He ground it quickly before adding the mummified demon flesh and pounding it to dust with the pestle. He added the cloves and lit it on fire.
He continued with the process, adding the blood mixture into another bowl and adding in the powdered moonstone and kraken ink. He stirred it with one of the bones, making wide circular motions. Oak continued to keep stirring, stirring counter-clockwise every 12 stirs until the clove smoke reached every corner of the room. The smoke made apprentice and master's eyes water a bit.
Once he was sure the smoke covered the room, Oak took another bone and held it up next to his head twirling it while crooning a spell in gobbledegook. It was beautiful. The smoke seemed to be sucked to the bone, swirling in a ball at the end. Surprisingly it even took the smoke out of their eyes. Once all the smoke was in the gas ball, Oak directed it into the blood.
He then quickly added the ground mixture from the mortar. After he grabbed all but one of the bones and carefully dropped them into the blood concoction. Oak began another crooning singing spell, using the last bone to stir the mixture. After twelve clockwise stirs he let the bone drip into the mixture. The next part of the strange song spell was said like a prayer, and then Oak poured the mixture onto the tapestry.
The blood quickly seeped into the tapestry as though it were a sponge, and soon Hermione saw her name, date of birth, and a small portrait of herself. She was in a decorative wreath of elm flowers. Quickly after that the blood appeared like veins and went back many generations.
The hazel eyed witch noticed that those who didn't have magic didn't have portraits. She also noticed that those who took the seat as a monarch had a crown above their names. She also noticed that her image was colorful, and her wreath was shimmery and colorful, while a few others were black and their portraits were shades of grey. She was happy to note that some of her distant cousins also had the color in them. Her Mamie Helen's wreath was colorful while her portrait was shades of grey except for her eyes. They were a bright amber brown and gorgeous. Like the sun hit the perfect spot in brown eyes, almost mesmerizing.
It filled Hermione with a sense of excitement and joy! It clearly meant that while her Mamie Helen was magical, but only able to see magic and had a magical sense around her. Her mother had once voiced that it was possible that Mamie Helen was magical, but didn't have a magical core. Perhaps a real Seer. She couldn't wait to tell her mother that her theory was correct!
Oak tutted and then chuckled, drawing her attention to him. The elder goblin smirked at her and pointed to the oldest member of her family, her direct line of lineage; Morgana Le Fey.
"Well fuck," Hermione muttered as she admired the gorgeous witch.
Morgana's portrait and wreath were both colorful and vibrant, like a photograph that shimmered only in the best places with. She had vibrant blue-green hazel eyes and dark curly auburn hair. Her eyes were almond shaped, bur they seemed longer somehow, giving Hermione the impression of a fox. Hermione noticed that Morgana had a few of freckles under her eyes, one on the bridge of her nose, and beauty mark on the right bottom side of her face. What surprised the petite witch was her portrait had movement. Morgana smirked and then she smiled at Hermione with a motherly tenderness.
"Problem, Apprentice Granger?" Oak smirked.
Hermione looked at to see who she had the child with, and it was Arthur Pendragon. Their child was indeed Mordred. Then it appeared as though Mordred had children with Guinevere though, and they were acknowledged as legitimate. Mordred was colorful, but not as bright as his mother.
"Not particularly, Elder Oak. I just don't want to be seen as some huge magical powerhouse. I'm smart sure, but I don't think I could live up to her," Hermione answered.
Severus chuckled and coughed to hide his laugh.
Hermione shot him an annoyed look and pursed her lips.
"Harry is a powerhouse," Hermione said firmly.
"I will admit your brother is a," he coughed to hide his chuckle, "powerhouse. But you're acknowledged as The Brightest Witch Your Generation. I hope you know half the spells and potions you create take more power than some of your generation can cast. You also were playing with powerful magic before you were of age."
Hermione scrunched up her face and looked at him as though he were crazy.
"I did not know that. I thought it just about focus and determination," she hissed.
"Even Hannibal Barca did what was thought to be impossible simply because he didn't know you couldn't," Severus quipped.
"Ah yes, he crossed the Alps in Winter and he did so with elephants," Oak said with a smirk, "Apprentice Granger, muggleborn or raised are more in tune with their magic and therefore more sensitive to magic. They're also more likely to master wandless since that's what all accidental magic is."
"Although that explains your overpowered cleaning spell," Severus said with a snort.
"Oh?" Oak drawled out, clearly interested.
Hermione blushed, "I overpowered it so much during my OWL and NEWT test before we came here that it removed the cement hiding the original flooring."
Oak laughed, "I hope you charged them."
"In a way," Severus drawled, "Her price was to request knowledge on how to summon a Family Grimoire as muggleborn have the high chance that they have a distant relative who also has magic. And as each family is different, so is The Summoning. While they find who would have that knowledge, she was informed it would be best to have the Inheritance Test done here. He then gave her the proper payment."
Oak grinned widely, it appeared shark like without the pressure of intimidation, "That is a wonderful form of compensation. Especially all things now considered."
Hermione's blush grew and she bit her lip but didn't look down, "So it would seem."
Elder Oak smirked before slipping back into business.
"As you've come to Gringotts for your test, Gringotts reserves the right to a single drop for our own achieves to identify you and others in your family," he said.
Hermione nodded, "I understand, Elder Oak."
He nodded in an authoritative manner and took the last drop of the mixture and poured it on a long piece of... something that looked like parchment. Unlike her version of the tapestry, Gringott's version was only names. Full witches and wizards had a gold sheen, those like her Mamie Helen were green, and squibs who could see magic were blue.
With a snap of his fingers the tapestry rolled up and shrunk, looking like the average parchment ready to be sent.
"I believe that concludes our business, Apprentice Granger," Elder Oak said with finality.
"Elder Oak, before I leave, would it be possible to have two copies of the list that look like Gringott's version? It seems more manageable until I have a wall to proudly display the official tapestry," the witch asked.
The goblin eyed her as though appraising her, "Unusual, but doable. It will cost 12 sickles for both."
Severus was quick to get the coins out to pay Gringotts for the service.
Oak nodded and quickly performed some sort of duplicate charm ritual. He placed a blank piece of cloth? just as long as the bank's copy, next to the original and poured some sort of shimmery ink (perhaps more kraken ink?) on it. The goblin then spoke what sounded like a simple spell, and the ink moved until was an exact copy. Oak did the same with another piece of parchment.
Once both were finished, he rolled them both up and handed them to the curly haired witch. When they were placed in her hands she knew they were vellum. But it was more supple than typical parchment.
"May your enemies tremble at your name and followers flock to your banner," Oak said.
"May your knowledge continue to be learned for generations to come," Hermione replied.
Causing Oak to grin at her response. He hadn't said he was a scholar, but he knew magic, and he indeed taught many. The only way she'd know that would be if someone or something told her. Gorvuk had told him of the apprentice and was intrigued. It wasn't often that Gorvuk spoke of interesting humans while they enjoyed their downtime.
Oak nodded at the witch in approval.
With that the doors opened and the goblin that escorted them to the room was there to escort them back.
"Mia! How did it go?" Harry asked as his sister walked in.
Hermione took a moment as he asked as soon as the front door closed behind them.
"You didn't just sit on the steps waiting for me the whole time, did you?" Hermione asked incredulously.
Harry laughed and rubbed the back of his head, "No. I had Sirius help me floo call Luna. She said she already knew and would be there. I don't know how she knew though."
"Luna just knows," Hermione sighed.
While that answer would irk the living hell out of her if she had asked, she knew now with her experience with ley lines that people could 'just know.' It still irked her a bit though, enough to purse her lips.
Her brother laughed as he felt her irritation at her own answer. Some things never changed.
Hermione grumbled for a moment, "It went fine."
Harry looked at Severus for confirmation. It caught the dark wizard off balance for a moment, even if his expression didn't show it, and he nodded that her testing did indeed go 'fine' as she put it.
"There's more?" Harry asked.
Hermione made another face that could only be described as insolent, "Yes, but not here."
"I believe you should speak with Black and Lady Weasley when you tell him," Severus said.
The witch almost blanched at the notion, but didn't say anything to contradict him. She recalled that the Noble Houses remained true to either Merlin's or Morgana's beliefs. The Black House was an Ancient and Most Noble family. Thimi said that her House was Ancient and Noble. From there Hermione was easily able to connect the dots that the Black Family was Most Noble because they still followed either Merlin or Morgana's beliefs closely.
Hermione made a moue of distaste, "I suppose."
"They'll be able to help you in ways that I cannot," Severus admitted.
Hermione caught that Severus called Cedrella Lady Weasley instead of Mrs. Weasley. She was hoping that it was only because he was differentiating them, as Cedrella was more of a lady than a harridan like Molly.
"Lady Weasley?" Harry asked.
"Would you rather I confuse you by saying Mrs. Weasley?" Severus answered with his own question.
"No, but it makes a lot easier for me," Harry said with a chuckle, "I'll have to start using that now. Unless I'm within five feet of them, they both look when I say it."
Severus smirked at the wizard.
It was evening when both Sirius and Cedrella were both at Grimmauld Place. Sirius had desk work that day and couldn't leave until Ministry office hours closed.
Harry and Hermione waited for Sirius to get slightly comfortable, waiting patiently until he changed out of his uniform. They knew Cedrella was in the parlor with some of the Weasleys.
They had already informed Cedrella that there was something she needed to speak about in private with her after Sirius was home. Hermione had something big to tell the three of them.
As soon as Sirius returned from the family floor Harry went up to him, while Hermione went to collect Cedrella.
"Hey, Pup, how's it going?" Sirius asked wit h a smile on his face as she clapped him on the shoulder.
"Good, I guess," Harry said with a smile before turning serious, "Padfoot, we need to meet in private with Hermione and Lady Weasley. Severus already knows, but will of course be there anyways."
"Is it sensitive in nature?" Sirius leaned over and asked lowly.
Harry nodded.
Sirius pulled back, "My office."
Sirius turned to a wall next to the family floor stairs, "1977 Honda Beauty."
Just as the wall shimmered like a sheer curtain, Sirius noticed that the rest of their party had arrived. He walked in first, before standing a few feet in and looking at them. Cedrella was next to enter, followed by the rest.
Sirius waved his wand, causing Cedrella to raise an eyebrow. The wizard instead pointed to the couches and arm chairs, silently telling them all to take a seat.
Severus quickly picked an armchair, while Harry and Hermoine took a loveseat. Cedrella sat on a chaise lounge and laid on her side.
"I've been informed the topic of this private party is sensitive in nature. I don't put it past Dumbledore to have cast a few listening charms on some of the things that came with the Weasleys downstairs," Sirius said casually.
Hermione stuck her chin up a bit, "Yes."
"Well then, Kitten. Seems like this is your show," the wizard said with a smile, and sat down in the biggest armchair, that was also near Harry.
"During my tests today, I overpowered a spell and discovered something useful for the Ministry," she admitted ruefully, "Professor Tofy was so excited he had me do the rest of the practical exam floor. I was compensated. I got to choose. I asked how to summon my family grimoire if lost, I know they exist but I don't know how to find mine. He said he'll ask Madame Marchbanks, but in the meantime gave me payment for an Inheritance test at Gringotts."
Cedrella's eyes widened slightly, but it was noticeable.
"We went. I have the big tapestry in my room, I asked for a copy like Gringotts has, which is a scroll," Hermione said, pulling out a scroll from her pocket, "I need your help. I know almost nothing; I hate being ignorant."
She rolled it out on the centerpiece table, and gently tapped above her eldest ancestor's name bringing attention to it:
Morgana Le Fey
"Holy shit," Sirius hissed.
Cedrella blinked a few times in shock. She knew. Cedrella looked at the young apprentice. The young witch was clearly distressed.
Harry could feel his sister's emotions, but was also stunned. He needed a few seconds for the rest of his brain to catch up.
"That's cool," Harry said, eliciting laughter from his sister. It was as though a bubble of anxiety burst into relief.
"Harry, Morgana's a prominent figure in our world. The Ancient and Noble Houses align themselves with either Merlin or Morgana's beliefs," Cedrella snorted.
"I didn't know that" Harry said looking at her then the rest of the occupants of the room.
"I had to be told," Hermione admitted.
Sirius nodded, "To be considered a Noble House the family needed to be true to the beliefs. To be an Ancient and Most Noble, are those who closely follow the beliefs. It's not just who has a lot of money and who doesn't. While Hogwarts was built before either of them, and both were students, they both made many prominent magical discoveries and relationships."
"Merlin was Slytherin, and Morgana Le Fey was Gryffindor," Severus said.
"Huh," Harry blinked in surprise.
"Surprising isn't it, when most Light families follow Merlin's beliefs," Cedrella smirked at him.
"Politics at its finest," Severus said drying.
Sirius pursed his lips, his only show of petulance. Harry looked at Sirius, having noticed the change in expression.
"Sirius?" Harry asked carefully.
"A lot of people forget that Merlin belonged in Slytherin, while at the same time saying he was some holy fuck, and for the last few decades we've been saying that Slytherins are evil. Just for Morgana Le Fey to having been Gryffindor. I know there are exceptions to the rules, but the beliefs were so similar with minor changes. Somehow it turned into blood purity bullshit," he ranted.
"Morgana was killed and sacrificed," Cedrella said solemnly, "She was a High Priestess of The Triple Goddess. She was preparing for one of the annual sacrifices, when Merlin distracted her and Arthur stabbed her in the back through the heart with Excalibur. They then made her the sacrifice."
Hermione lip twitched in an unvoluntary light sneer at that. It was a disgusting and disrespectful.
Cedrella noticed and nodded in agreement, "It is boorish. However, you were right to come to us. The Blacks are Ancient and Most Noble for closely following Morgana's beliefs. Sirius may be less helpful, he did his best to reject typical Black upbringing, and learned Merlin's beliefs in secret with James."
Sirius had the decency to blush, "I didn't know Merlin and Arthur did that. I thought she was evil. I heard repeatedly from Andy that she was a prominent Healer, and I just didn't believe her. I know she did more than dabble in dark arts."
Cedrella and Hermione looked at him with identical right eyebrows raised at him with deadpan expressions.
"I'm sorry!" Sirius exclaimed helplessly.
Cedrella shook her head at him, "It's fine I suppose…," she turned to Hermione, "We can go over her beliefs while Narcissa and I teach you."
"Mrs. Malfoy doesn't have a Dark Mark, does she?" Harry asked quietly. He was unaccusatory, and sounded slightly bewildered.
Severus looked at Harry, once more impressed, "She does not. Narcissa follows the beliefs, but she is first a Black and at the end a Black."
Cedrella nodded, "Bellatrix betrayed the family. Toujour Pur. Always Pure. It didn't mean pureblood the way Bellatrix and many others believed it did. Always pure, of magic –"
Sirius snorted, "The Blacks were far from pure of magic."
Cedrella looked at him again, "Just because Grandfather Phineas was fanatical that our purity came from our blood, and Head, didn't mean we all were. Walburga and Orion were first cousins as well, which didn't help. However, Cyrus and Druella also raised Narcissa and Andromeda. Cyrus got most of his way with Bellatrix, but after seeing how malicious and bat shit crazy Bellatrix was turning out without our daily blend, Druella got more of a say on how they were raised."
"Cyrus raised a fuss until Andy was kicked out. I mean look at me and Callidora! I married a 'blood-traitor,' completely against their perceived purity. Callidora also married a Light family, but wasn't kicked out as the Longbottoms also follow Morgana's beliefs. I taught my sons, and most of my grandchildren the beliefs. Hell, Molly's aunt was Lucretia; married into the Prewetts!" she continued.
Sirius raised his hands, "I know purebloods are more like a bramble than a tree. I know that Heads of House Black was crazy about making sure Blacks only ended with other purebloods. But I feel like I'm getting a history lesson when we're here for Mia."
Cedrella huffed, "As I said Morgana Le Fey was a High Priestess for The Triple Goddess, but she was also Queen of Avalon. A real place with a different name now."
"Who is The Triple Goddess?" Harry asked bashfully.
"Lady Hecate," Hermione answered quickly.
"Lady Hecate?" Harry asked her pointedly.
The witch had the decency to blush.
"I'm sure you've heard me, mum, and dad, say Hades a lot," she said.
Harry nodded, "Yeah, I thought it was a way to get around swearing."
Hermione tried to hide her smile, but it was obvious in the crooked smile that broke through in its place, "Yes and no. We don't talk about religion since we are expected to still put in some appearances with the Church, but since they learned I'm a witch they've rejected it. They started reading more and agreed that while they would still be Christians, they would also follow Hecate. She's not just the Goddess of witchcraft, but many things. A lot they agree with, so it wasn't a struggle. We've got access to many books and were able to do some… NEWT level studying."
Cedrella looked at the young witch, once more impressed.
"Well, you seem to have skipped Merlin and Morgana and gone straight to the source. I will explain what we know of the beliefs now. I will also like to pick your mind concerning what you've learned and what I know," Cedrella stated.
Severus also looked at his witch impressed, "I can see now how you're recognized as Ancient and Noble to the elves."
"Oooh?" Sirius asked gleefully and teasingly.
"The elves recognize me as a member of Ancient and Noble House of Granger," Hermione answered. She really didn't feel like dealing with that sort of affectionate teasing at the moment.
"That's already better than House of Dumbledore," Cedrella said before cackling. It sounded like an exaggeration of a giggle, 'Hee hee hee!'
Severus smirked while Harry and Sirius grinned, however it was slightly feral.
"I believe once you return, near the end of the school year we may be able to have you listed as one of the Sacred. We have plan it for a special Beltane Wizengamot session. It's when we can have Magic be our judge. It completely negates human input," Cedrella said happily.
"However, you should be informed that because you have having Magic judge you, there isn't someone who can save you should something bad happen," Sirius said, "Which I highly doubt."
"Dumbledore will be against this," Severus said mildly.
"But Severus, this will only make the most sense," Cedrella purred, her eyes alight with mischief.
"Yeah, if you publicly are your regular self and friends with Death Eaters, it would make the most sense for you to want to turn Hermione into something as close to pureblood as you can or something," Harry said.
"Turn me?" Hermione asked her brother calmly, but Harry knew it was dangerously calm.
"I mean for the stupid extremist. They'll want to see you either not exist or abide by their rules. They're showing more respect cause, y' know, but I know the rest would be more willing to accept you if Magic called them stupid to their faces," Harry rushed, "Which would look like Sev is doing what people expect of him in his job as both a spy and master."
"Dumbledore wants to put a wedge between Harry and Hermione. While Hermione is learning dark magic, he's going to say she's going dark and try to tell you to stay away from her 'poor influence'," Sirius said with a disappointed sigh.
"The higher the pedestal, the bigger the fall," Cedrella said.
"Do you think that also applied to Morgana?" Hermione asked hopefully.
"I suppose. I know at the end of the day she was just a strong, intelligent, and confident witch," Cedrella mused.
"Sounds like someone else we know," Harry said cheekily while grinning at Hermione.
Cedrella and Severus chuckled while Sirius laughed. The hazel eyed witch blushed.
"Hermione, you don't have to live up to her. Something we're told often is yes to strive for tradition, but it's okay to make it your own," Cedrella consoled.
"No one expects you to be Morgana or Merlin or anyone like that, we expect you to be Hermione," Sirius followed up.
Hermione pursed her lips, "How will that work when I marry my master?"
Sirius paled and looked a little green before composing himself.
"No one told you to imagine them together," Harry snarked.
Cedrella nodded with the same unamused expression, "Typically it would be seen as you marrying down. But if we do it for after you marry, then the Grangers and Snapes will be seen as pureblood."
"Would them marrying be seen as a uh, conflict of interest?" Harry asked, unsure if the way he phrased it was correct.
"It doesn't," Sirius said.
"If it did then we would be bereaved of masters and mistresses of their field. There's a reason why Hermione and Severus will marry. The correct ritual enforces it. To say someone cannot be a master in that field because of the relationship that happens is to argue with magic," Cedrella explained.
Harry and Hermione let out a sigh of relief.
"Then why not marry and then do it before the Beltane session?" Harry asked.
Hermione slowly turned and looked at Harry with an incredibly intense stare.
"You want me to marry at 25? When to the rest of the muggle world I'd still be 17? Is that what you're saying? Do you want Aunt Carol to think I'm pregnant!?" Hermione asked lowly.
Harry flushed, "No! I mean, can't we hide it and –"
"Harry, I will never hide my wedding ring once I've be wed," Hermione said firmly.
"Well, it might be easier if you do a Traditional Marriage, if hiding your wedding ring is the issue" Cedrella suggested.
"What do you mean?" Hermione asked carefully.
It was clear why Hermione's form was a jaguar; she was currently very dangerous. While she wouldn't permanently harm her loved ones, she knew many other ways to hurt someone.
"A Traditional Marriage is one where you call magic to you to witness your bond. It is more than a muggle wedding, more than just rings. You would bring your own ribbon to the alter, Severus would have the other and meet you there. You call magic to bestow upon you; fidelity, adoration, honor, and health," the older witch answered.
"I think Mum might know more about it," Harry said.
Severus paused before he nodded in agreement, "She was very knowledgeable on bonding ceremonies."
"They already know she's going to be 25 when she comes back. I don't think it would be too hard to talk to Mum about it," Harry followed.
"Her father likes you," Sirius said while looking at the floor.
Severus couldn't stop the blush that graced his cheeks and lightly coughed.
"I mean you can set aside twenty minutes a day to plan. You'll have the benefit of both Narcissa and myself, plus with our connections, it would be a few floo calls, a few owls, and a few meet ups," Cedrella said.
Hermione flushed as her mind quickly went over pros and cons. She would be 25, which is an acceptable age to marry in her opinion. Her last name would be Snape in the wizarding world, and Granger in the muggle for a few years. With a handfasting, she'd still be able to give her parents the wedding in both worlds. One more for her, the handfasting, one for her family, the typical wedding.
"Would I still be able to call my Family Grimoire?" the witch asked carefully.
"Your ancestral Grimoire will always be something you can call upon as the ritual includes blood. It isn't taught as much now as some Heads of House are so paranoid they think their own family magic will be used against them. Blacks however know, if we're in need it even has directions to make our tea blend ourselves," Cedrella answered neutrally.
"Would you be the person who would have the answers I need? Professor Tofty gave me the proper payment, clearly, for this," Hermione said, gently waving to the small tapestry.
Cedrella arched a brow at the apprentice, "Very astute, I shouldn't be impressed but I am. I know how and so do a few coworkers of mine. However, Professor Tofty would have to go through the Head of the Department before they flag down which of us know."
"Can we cut out the middleman?" Hermione asked the other witch.
"We can, but I will have to inform my Head of Department first," Cedrella answered.
"Why?" Harry asked, "If you know what we need to do, why do you have to let them know?"
"It's procedure," Cedrella answered, clearly used to avoiding direct answers.
Harry and Hermione's emotions both spiked in annoyance and felt that the other also felt the same. They looked at each other through the corner of their eyes, clearly on the same page.
"Well, I'm still getting to know my master in a personal setting instead of professional, isn't this rushing things?" Hermione asked.
It surprised Sirius and Cedrella. However, it didn't surprise Severus. He was also of the same opinion that he wanted to get to know her more before they married.
"I forget that you're muggleborn," Cedrella said, "but I'm sure you know that not all marriages are love matches."
Hermione nodded, "I'm aware. I also know that after marriage and consummation that's when the betrothed, the arranged, try to get to know each other. I want to say that it is a practice my family knows a lot about, but you already know through history how they… got around that."
Cedrella smirked, "Then do that."
Harry rolled his eyes at that non-solution.
"Why not write a letter to us each week. When we visit, we get them and we read them while you're in the room. We'll do our best to read and reply to most of them," Harry suggested.
Hermione's eyes sparkled at her brother's solution, "I like that. I'll be able to keep you somewhat up to date, you'll get to see me age that way, and I'll still have contact with you."
"You should also write one for your parents," Severus said, "It would be unfair to them, and they'll love it."
Hermione beamed and nodded.
Cedrella's face twisted in amusement. The siblings were clearly close. She heard, but to see it in action, even against her idea, was darling to see.
"We'll help you, Mia. All you need to worry about is making your stamp on the world. You've been doing it since you came back to us," Cedrella said.
Hermione nodded, feeling a little weight leave her shoulders. Her goal had always to be able to make a change for the better. She was as ambitious as any Slytherin, she had wanted to be Minister of Magic. She knew in her heart of hearts she would be a potions mistress on the surface and a wards mistress in secrecy.
