In the bustling halls of Chaldea, Mordred and Caenis had earned quite the reputation as "tomboy misfits," a term that Martha often muttered with a mix of exasperation and endearment. For Martha, watching these two act on impulse, shirk orders, and outright defy authority was both baffling and mildly infuriating. While their rebellious nature kept things interesting, it also often put Chaldea's staff and other Servants on edge. As one of the few grounded forces of order in Chaldea, Martha had finally decided to take action.
With a resolute sigh, she went to find Ritsuka Fujimaru, hoping that the Master of Chaldea might be able to handle the two with a firmer hand—or, if needed, with the authority of Command Seals.
Ritsuka was resting in the Command Room, enjoying a rare moment of peace, when Martha approached.
"Master," she began, her tone both patient and determined. "We need to talk about those two—Mordred and Caenis. They've become quite the handful, and I'm not sure how much longer I can tolerate their antics. I think it's time you step in and make them listen."
Ritsuka raised an eyebrow, already suspecting where this was going. "You mean...make them follow the rules?"
Martha nodded. "Exactly. They're constantly skirting orders, challenging others to duels whenever they please, and I can't tell you how many times I've had to break up their fights before things got out of hand. I'm sure you're aware of what happened last week in the training hall?"
Ritsuka chuckled awkwardly, recalling the incident. Mordred and Caenis had somehow gotten into a spat over who could hit harder, which devolved into an all-out brawl. They'd left the training hall half-wrecked, with several unfortunate bystanders fleeing from the chaotic scene.
"Yes, I remember," Ritsuka admitted. "But I think they mostly do it out of a need to...well, prove themselves. They're both warriors to the core."
"I'm well aware of that," Martha replied, crossing her arms. "But their defiance is getting out of hand, and it's making the other Servants nervous. Perhaps it's time to consider using Command Seals."
Ritsuka's eyes widened. "Command Seals? Martha, that's a bit...extreme, don't you think?"
"Perhaps," she conceded, "but they've left me little choice. I've tried talking sense into them; all they do is laugh it off or brush me aside. Maybe the authority of a Command Seal will show them just how serious this is."
Ritsuka frowned, uncertain. "I know they're troublemakers, but they're also our allies. Using a Command Seal to force them to comply might do more harm than good. I'll try to talk to them first, okay?"
Martha sighed but nodded. "Very well. But if they don't listen to you, I'd strongly advise you to reconsider. Sometimes authority needs to be reinforced."
Ritsuka took a deep breath and made his way toward the courtyard, where he had last heard the two were loitering. Sure enough, he found Mordred leaning against a stone column, arms crossed and looking as bored as ever, while Caenis was sprawled out on a nearby bench, tossing a dagger up and catching it absentmindedly.
"Hey, you two," Ritsuka called out as he approached.
Both Servants turned, with Mordred's eyes lighting up in mischief while Caenis gave a lazy grin. "Well, if it isn't our Master. Come to give us another lecture?" Mordred sneered, though not unkindly.
Caenis chuckled, folding her arms behind her head. "Yeah, let me guess. Martha's got her knickers in a twist again?"
Ritsuka sighed. "Well, you're not wrong. She's pretty frustrated with you two. The constant rule-breaking, the fighting, the destruction—it's got a lot of people on edge."
"Isn't that their problem?" Caenis replied with a shrug. "I don't see why everyone's so wound up over a bit of roughhousing."
Ritsuka ran a hand through his hair. "It's not just roughhousing. You're breaking equipment, injuring people—accidentally, I'm sure—but it's still a problem. I need you two to at least try to follow the rules."
"Rules? Pfft." Mordred scoffed, crossing her arms. "I don't follow rules. Never did, never will. Besides, they're so boring. You'd think being a legendary hero would give you some leeway to cut loose every once in a while."
Caenis nodded in agreement, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Rules are for people who don't know how to handle themselves. We're warriors, not a bunch of children."
Ritsuka's patience was wearing thin. "Look, I get it. You're both powerful fighters, and I respect that. But this behavior is hurting Chaldea as a whole. If you can't find a way to rein it in, I might have to use Command Seals to make you listen."
The casual confidence in their faces shifted instantly. Caenis narrowed her eyes, a faint growl escaping her throat. "So, that's how it is, huh? You're gonna try and control us like a couple of pets?"
"Yeah, Master," Mordred chimed in, her voice filled with defiance. "You think a Command Seal's gonna make us respect you? That's not how loyalty works."
Ritsuka raised his hands defensively. "I don't want to use them! That's exactly why I came here to talk to you face-to-face. I just want you to understand that it's important for everyone in Chaldea to work together. That includes following some basic rules."
Caenis gritted her teeth, visibly tense. "Fine. We'll play along...but if anyone tries to hold us back in a fight, I'm not pulling my punches."
Mordred shrugged, cracking a small grin. "Guess that's as close as you're gonna get to an agreement from us."
"Thank you," Ritsuka replied, relieved. "Just…try not to go overboard. And maybe try to show Martha a little respect."
The two exchanged glances, visibly unimpressed, but nodded.
As Ritsuka left, Martha approached him, her expression curious. "Did they agree to listen?"
Ritsuka nodded, a hint of satisfaction in his expression. "Yes, they'll try to keep it under control. Without Command Seals."
Martha smiled, clearly impressed. "You managed to do what I couldn't, then. Hopefully, they'll keep their word."
"They will. They're both loyal, even if they show it in unconventional ways," Ritsuka replied with a grin.
The following morning, Chaldea's halls buzzed with tension. Martha, usually a pillar of calm, was visibly riled as she stomped through the corridors, her lips pressed into a thin line, her eyebrow twitching with barely restrained frustration. Several staff members quickly moved out of her way, sensing the storm brewing around her.
In the training area, Caenis and Mordred were, predictably, up to no good. They had challenged each other yet again, and their competition had escalated from friendly sparring to chaotic mayhem. Caenis was gleefully bashing through training dummies with reckless abandon, while Mordred was zipping around, her sword tearing through targets in a flurry of sparks and debris.
The clamor drew Martha to the scene, her patience entirely gone. She took in the sight of wrecked equipment, startled staff, and the two tomboy Servants laughing as if they hadn't just left the training hall in ruins yet again.
"That's it!" Martha's voice rang out, carrying a note of authority that made several onlookers freeze. Her form flickered briefly, and in an instant, she shifted into her Ruler class, her presence magnifying. "I've had enough of you two wreaking havoc in Chaldea!"
Caenis turned, rolling her eyes with a dismissive chuckle. "Oh, come on. We were just having some fun, right, Mordred?"
"Yeah!" Mordred added, shrugging casually. "Nobody got hurt… well, not too much, anyway."
Ritsuka, who had just entered the hall, saw the escalating scene and moved to Martha's side, hoping to intervene. "Martha, maybe we can handle this a little more… diplomatically?"
But Martha's gaze stayed locked on Caenis and Mordred, her fists clenched. "Master, I appreciate your patience, but I've given these two enough chances. They clearly don't respect authority, and sometimes, the only way to deal with unruly behavior is with discipline!"
Ritsuka hesitated, knowing that Martha's fury was hard to quell when it reached this point. "Just… don't go too hard on them, okay?"
Martha softened for a brief moment but quickly steeled herself again. "Master, I need you to trust me and step back. I know you want to be fair, but sometimes consequences are necessary."
With a sigh of defeat, Ritsuka nodded. "Alright. Just… don't break too many bones."
Martha cracked her knuckles, an ominous smile forming on her face as she turned back toward Caenis and Mordred, who now stood ready, clearly eager for whatever Martha had in mind.
Caenis smirked, stretching her shoulders. "So, you think you can tame us, Martha? Good luck. I don't go down easy."
Mordred raised her sword, grinning wildly. "Same here! Let's see if you've got the guts to handle both of us!"
Martha's response was immediate. She closed the distance with astonishing speed, lunging at Caenis first with a powerful right hook. Caenis barely had time to react, blocking the punch with her forearm, though the force pushed her back several paces. She grinned, her blood pumping with excitement.
"Oh, so we're doing this?" Caenis taunted, a flicker of her divine aura igniting around her as she prepared to counter.
Martha didn't relent. She followed up with a swift kick to Mordred, who deflected it with her sword, sparks flying on impact. The collision left Mordred momentarily off-balance, and Martha seized the opportunity to deliver a powerful blow to her side, knocking her back.
"I don't know who you two think you're dealing with," Martha said, her voice low and fierce. "But in my Ruler form, I'm not here to play games. It's time you learned respect."
Caenis growled, summoning her spear with a smirk. "Fine by me. Let's see how tough you really are!"
Mordred, regaining her stance, twirled her sword, her eyes flashing with excitement. "Finally, a decent challenge! I was getting bored!"
The two lunged at Martha simultaneously, their combined attack aimed with precision and speed. But Martha was ready. She sidestepped Caenis's spear thrust, redirecting the spear's momentum with her palm, and twisted to dodge Mordred's sword strike with a fluid grace that spoke to her years of training.
Before Caenis could recover, Martha delivered a swift uppercut, sending the warrior stumbling back. Mordred tried to follow up, but Martha anticipated her move, spinning to block the incoming strike before countering with an elbow to Mordred's side.
"Not so cocky now, are you?" Martha taunted, her smirk returning.
Caenis, rubbing her jaw with a scowl, spat to the side. "Oh, you're gonna regret that, saint."
With a roar, Caenis unleashed a surge of magical energy, her divine aura blazing brighter. She lunged again, moving with even greater ferocity. Mordred joined her, both attacking in sync, pressing Martha with relentless strikes.
Ritsuka watched from the sidelines, anxiety bubbling in his chest. He knew Martha was capable, but against both Mordred and Caenis? This was bound to get intense.
Martha held her ground, her agility and precision allowing her to evade and counter with ease. At one point, she blocked Caenis's spear with her palm and, with a sharp twist, disarmed her, flinging the spear aside. Caenis cursed, her frustration mounting.
"Give it up!" Martha commanded, her voice firm. "You can't keep running wild in Chaldea."
"Keep dreaming," Mordred shot back, attempting a swift, underhanded swipe. Martha dodged it effortlessly, retaliating with a punch that sent Mordred skidding back.
The clash continued for several minutes, with neither side willing to yield. But gradually, it became clear that Martha's experience and strategic skill were tipping the balance. Exhausted and bruised, Caenis and Mordred began to falter, their movements slower, their breathing labored.
"Ready to listen now?" Martha asked, her tone softer but still firm.
Caenis glared but dropped her stance, breathing hard. "Tch. Fine. You made your point, alright?"
Mordred grumbled, wiping sweat from her brow as she sheathed her sword. "Yeah, yeah. Don't expect us to start acting like saints, though."
Martha gave them a satisfied nod. "I don't need you to be saints. I just need you to be responsible."
As the two troublemakers slowly walked off, still grumbling under their breath, Ritsuka approached Martha, giving her an admiring look.
"Thanks, Martha," he said with a small smile. "I didn't think they'd actually listen."
Martha sighed, relaxing out of her Ruler form. "They're tough, but they're good people. Sometimes a firm hand is what they need to remind them of their strength—and their responsibility."
Ritsuka chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. "Well, let's hope they've learned their lesson. Otherwise, I think my Command Seals might actually get a workout."
Martha laughed, patting Ritsuka's shoulder. "Let's just hope it doesn't come to that."
