Chapter 4
Prime Minister
The Doctor, Martha and Jack appeared.
"Oh, my head." Martha said, rubbing her temples.
"Time travel without a capsule. That's a killer." The Doctor said moving his jaw a little bit. He needed to find Chase. No witch needed to be with the Master; they would go insane with him.
Jack cracked his neck before they walked out of the alley way.
They walked along the main street taking in the sights around them.
"Still, at least we made it. Earth, 21st century by the looks of it. Ha, ha, talk about luck." Jack said, sticking his hands in his pockets.
"That wasn't luck." The Doctor said, looking at them. "That was me."
Flashback…
The Doctor used his sonic screwdriver on Jack's vortex manipulator as he and Martha tried to keep the future kind out. "Hold still. Don't move. Hold it still."
"I'm telling you it's broken. It hasn't worked in years."
"That's because you didn't have me. Martha grab hold." He grabbed Martha's hand and placed it on top of the manipulator. "Now!"
The three of them disappeared.
Present Day…
The three of them were sitting in a walkway.
"The moral is, if you're gonna get stuck at the end of the universe, get stuck with an ex-time agent and his vortex manipulator."
"But this Master bloke, he's got the Tardis. He could be anywhere in time and space." Martha said, looking at the two of them.
"Not only that. He has my sister Chase." Jack said huffing a bit.
"Wait a minute sister." Martha asked, looking at him.
"Yes… I took her in and she's been like my sister ever since. We looked after each other."
"He's here with her, trust me." The Doctor said with a nod of his head. He looked around and saw Saxon campaign posters plastered everywhere.
"Who is he, anyway? And that voice at the end, that wasn't the professor." Martha said, looking at the Doctor in concern.
"If the Master's a Time Lord, he must have regenerated." Jack said, shaking his head.
"What does that mean?" Martha asked, looking at Jack.
"Means he's changed his face, voice, body, everything. New man."
The Doctor noticed a man tapping a repeating rhythm on an enamel mug.
"Then how are we going to find him?" Martha asked, looking at the Doctor.
"I'll know him, the moment I see him. Time Lords always do."
"But hold on." She saw the posters. "If he could be anyone… We missed the election. But it can't be…"
The Doctor stood up slowly and so did Jack. They walked towards a giant screen showing the news.
Martha followed them.
"Mr. Saxon has returned from the Palace and is greeting the crowd inside Saxon Headquarters." The newscaster said.
Saxon walked down the stairs with an entourage of people with a woman beside him.
Jack's eyes widened. "Doctor."
It was Chase. She linked arms with him. A wedding band was on her finger. She was dressed in fine clothes.
"I said I knew that voice. When he spoke inside the Tardis. I've heard that voice hundreds of times. I've seen him. We all have. That was the voice of Harold Saxon." Martha said.
"That's him. He's Prime Minister." The Doctor said, looking at the screen.
"Mr. Saxon, this way sir. Come on, kiss the lady, sir." The photographer said with a smile.
"The Master is the Prime Minister of Great Britain."
He kissed Chase on the lips.
"The Master and his wife…"
"He married my sister, Doctor." Jack complained.
Saxon stepped forward bringing his wife with him. "This country has been sick. This country needs healing. This country needs medicine. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that, what this country really needs right now… is a doctor." He smiled into the camera.

Harry walked down the hall in number ten with Chase next to him.
Clerks as he passed handed him papers.
"Finance reports, sir."
"Military protocols, sir."
"EC directive, sir."
"Annual budget, sir."
"... recommendations."
He stopped outside of the door to the Cabinet room door.
"I'm so proud of you, Harry." Chase said in a loving tone.
Harry smiled and leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips. "Bless."
Tish walked up to them. "Uh, sir… If you don't mind me asking… I'm sorry, but it's all a bit new. What exactly do you want me to do?"
"Oh, yes, what was it, uh…"
"Tish." Chase reminded him. "Letitia Jones." She looked up at her husband lovingly rubbing his arm.
Tish nodded her head at what Chase had said.
"Tish." Harry nodded his head. "Well, then, Tish… You just stand there and look gorgeous." He entered the Cabinet room. "A glorious day. Downing Street rebuilt, the Cabinet in session. Let the work of the government begin." He threw the files into the air and the contents scattered. "Oh go on. Crack a smile. It's funny, isn't it? Albert, funny? No? Little bit?"
"Very funny, sir, hm. But… but if we could get down to business, there is the matter of policy, of which we have very little…" Albert looked at him hoping that Harry would do something that would do work or something.
"No, no, no, no. Before we start all that, I just want to say… Thank you. Thank you one and all, you ugly, fat-faced bunch of wet, snivelling traitors."
"Yes, quite. Very funny. But I think…."
"No, no. That wasn't funny." He stood up. "Hm, you see, I'm not making myself very clear. Funny is like this." He exaggerates a smile. "Not funny like this." He exaggerates a frown. "And right now, I'm not like this." He smiles. "I'm like this." He frowned. "Because you are traitors. Oh yes, you are! As soon as you saw the vote swinging my way you abandoned your parties and jumped on the Saxon bandwagon. So…" He sat down looking at them. "This is your reward." He took a gas mask from under the table and slipped it on, pulling his wife onto his lap.
"Excuse me Prime Minister, do you mind my asking… what is that?" Albert asked, looking at him with wide eyes.
"It's a gas mask."
"I beg your pardon."
"It's a gas mask fool." Chase said leaning against her husband as he put a mask on her.
"Yes, but, uh why are you two wearing them?"
"Well, because of the gas." Harry said, looking at them.
"I'm sorry?"
Harry lifted the mask. "Because of the gas." He said putting it down.
"What gas?"
"This gas."
Chase pushed the button and the white gas emitted from the speaker phones on the center of the table.
The Ministers start coughing and choking on the gas.
"You're insane!" Alfred shouted pointing at the two of them.
Harry raised both of his thumbs up.
Alfred collapsed onto the table dead.
Harry tapped onto the table a rhythm that he knew with his fingers.

Martha had taken Jack and the Doctor to her flat. "Home." She said softly.
"What have you got? Computer, laptop, anything?" The Doctor questioned looking at Martha.
Jack tried to make a call on his mobile.
"Jack, who are you phoning? You can't tell anyone, we're here!"
"Just some friends of mine, but there's no reply…" Jack said, hanging his phone up and slipping it into his pocket, sighing. He rubbed his face. He was really worried about Chase. What had the Master done to Chase? There was no way that Chase did that so willingly.
Martha handed the laptop over to the Doctor. "Here you go. Any good?"
Jack took the laptop from the Doctor. "I can show you the Saxon websites. He's been around for ages." He said as he sat down at the desk.
"That's so weird though. It's the day after the election. That's four days after I met you." Martha said, looking at the Doctor.
"We went flying all around the universe while he was here the whole time." The Doctor said, rubbing his face. This was not good.
"You gonna tell us who he is?" Martha asked curiously. She wanted to know the Doctor was being so tight lipped about this. There had to be a reason why the Doctor was concerned.
"He's a Time Lord."
"What about the rest of it? I mean, who'd call himself the Master?"
"That's all you need to know." He really didn't need Martha to know anything more than that. It would be too dangerous for her to know anything about that. It would be too dangerous for her to know what the Master did. The master would probably end up killing her and that would not end well. He would not allow that to happen.
"Come on, show me Harold Saxon." He told Jack. He wanted to know why Chase would be with the Master right at the moment. Married and so close to him right at that moment. It bothered him. After all she was stuck with him and it was all their fault that this happened to Chase.
Martha went over and checked her answering machine.
"Martha, where are you? I got this new job. You won't believe it. It's weird, they just phoned me up out of the blue. I'm working for…"
Martha shut off the machine. "Oh, like it mattered." She said, rolling her eyes.

Tish was following a reporter, Vivien Rook, trying to get her to turn her away and was being fairly unsuccessful. "I'm sorry, but you're not allowed in…."
"Harold Saxon: A Modern Churchill. It's a definitive think piece on the man himself." She handed the article in question to Tish. "Oh come on Sweetheart, you must've read it."
"Um, not really, sorry. I'm new."
"Mr. Saxon does have a pretty face. But I'm here to see Mrs. Saxon."
"You can't just go barging in." Tish shouted at Vivien Rook.
Vivien walked into the sitting room where Chase was massaging her feet from the high heels that she wore from the day. The blue high heeled shoes sat beside her. "Mrs. Saxon, Vivien Rook, Sunday Mirror." She held up her press car. "You've heard of me." She said with a smile.
Chase looked up at her and smiled a small smile on her pale pink lips. Her green eyes met with Vivien's eyes. "Oh, can't I just have an hour to myself?" She complained, still rubbing her poor feet. "It's been a hell of a day and I haven't had time to rest my poor aching feet."
"Oh, strike while the iron's hot, that's what I say, Chase. I can call you Chase, can't I?" She asked, looking at her.
Chase looked at Vivien and didn't give the woman an answer unsure of what to tell her.
"Now, everyone's talking about Harold Saxon, but I thought 'What about the wife?' All I need is twenty minutes."
"Oh I think maybe we should wait." Chase said, looking at the door. She had left the room after Harry had told her to leave. After all he had wanted to clean the mess up himself.
"The headline's waiting to print: The Power Behind the Throne."
"Really?" Chase asked in wonder, looking at Vivien. Now that was intriguing to her.
"Britain's First Lady." Vivien said with a smile hoping that she would take the interview. She really wanted to talk to Chase and hoped to get some questions answered. That was what she wanted. She really wanted answers right at that moment. That was what she wanted.
"That is really good isn't it?" Chase said shifting in her seat a bit, fixing the bottom of her dress that she wore smoothing it out a bit. This was shocking news indeed to her.
"Front page." Vivien said with a bigger smile.
"Oh, well, I suppose…." Chase bit her lip lightly thinking about it. "Oh go on then. Twenty minutes." She agreed to the twenty minute interview.
"Excellent! Thank you! Oh, oh, what was it? Oh, Tish. Now you can leave us alone." She handed Tish her coat.
"No, but I'm supposed to sit in." Tish said, shaking her head.
"No, no. It's… it's only a profile piece. You know, hair and clothes and nonsense. There's a good girl. Out you go. That's it." She pushed Tish out of the room and closed the door. She turned to Chase. "Mrs. Saxon. I have reason to believe…. that you're in very great danger… All of us, in fact. Not just the country, but the whole world."
Chase scoffed, rolling her eyes.
"I beg of you, hear me out." Vivian begged her.
"What are you talking about?" Chase asked, looking at her.
"Your husband is not who he says he is. I'm sorry, but it's a lie. Everything's a lie."
She shook her head. "No, it's not a lie. My brother introduced us. He was there when Harry proposed to me. In fact Harry went and did it properly. He had to ask my brother Jack since our parents are dead. Harry asked Jack to marry me."
"Please listen to me."
DWDWDW
"I'm voting Saxon. He can tick my box any day." Sharon Osbourne said.
"Vote Saxon! Go Harry!" McFly shouted.
"I think Mr. Saxon is exactly what this country needs. He's a very fine man. And he is handsome too." Ann Widdecombe said.
Jack stopped the commercial website and rubbed his face. "Former Minister of Defence. First came to prominence when he shot down the Racnoss on Christmas Eve." He looked to the Doctor. "Nice work by the way."
The Doctor sat on the couch. "Oh, thanks."
"He goes back years." Martha said with a smile.
"But that doesn't explain Chase being his wife." The Doctor said, shaking his head.
"He's famous. Everyone knows his story. Look. Cambridge University, Rugby blue, won the Athletics thing, wrote a novel, went into business, met his wife while she was out on a run, marriage, everything. He's got a whole life."
DWDWDW
"All of it. The school days, his degree, even his mother and father. It's all invented." Vivien held up a photo. "Look, Harold Saxon never went to Cambridge. There was no Harold Saxon. The thing is, it's obvious. The forgery is screaming out and yet n o one can see it. It's as if he's mesmerized the entire world."
Chase got up on her bare feet narrowing her eyes at Vivien. "I think perhaps you should leave now." She said calmly.
"18 months ago he became real. This is his first, honest-to-God appearance, just after the downfall of Harriet Jones. And at the exact same time, they launched the Archangel Network."
"Mrs. Rook, now stop it." Chase's hands gripped tightly at her sides.
"Even now they say that the… the Cabinet has gone into seclusion. I mean, what does that mean, seclusion?"
Chase shrugged her shoulders. "How should I know?" But she really knew what had happened to them.
"But I've got plenty of research on you. Yes, good family. Harkness. Bright, essentially harmless." She sat down next to Chase. "And that's why I am asking you Chase. I'm begging you. If you have seen anything, heard anything, even the slightest thing that would give you cause to doubt him."
"I think…."
"Yes?"
"There was a time when we first met, I wondered… but he was so good to my brother…. Jack. And he said…"
"What? Just tell me, Sweetheart."
"The thing is… I made my choice."
"I'm sorry?"
"For better or for worse. Isn't that right, Harry?"
Harry leaned against the door that was connecting the room. "My faithful wife." He said with a smile.
"Mr. Saxon. Prime Minister, I… I… I was just having a little joke with poor little Chase. I, I didn't mean."
Henry walked into the room. "Oh, but you're absolutely right. Harold Saxon doesn't exist."
"Then tell me… Who are you?"
"I'm the Master and these…." He held out his hands, "are my friends."
Four small metal spheres appeared floating around the two of them as the Master pulled Chase closer to him.
"I'm sorry?"
"Can't you hear it, Mrs. Rook?" He asked, looking at his head.
"What do you mean?"
"The drumbeat. The drums are coming closer and closer."
The spheres head towards Vivien, spikes now coming from their lower halves.
"The lady doesn't like us." A female voice rang out.
They advanced on her, their spikes spinning.
"Silly lady." A male voice rang out.
"Dead lady." Another male voice rang out.
Vivien screamed out.
The two of them walked out of the room and shut the door.
He took a breath and opened the door and the screams continued, he winced and shut the door. He put his fist into his mouth.
She sighed and shook her head. "She knew. Harry, she knew everything. You promised. You said Archangel was 100%."
"Um, 99, 98?" He said looking at her biting his lip. He was thankful that it was working on her.
"But if she's asking questions, then who else? How much time have we got?"
He held out his arms and pulled her into a hug. "Tomorrow morning, I promise. That's when everything ends. Come on. We have a mess to clean up."
"You mean I have a mess to clean up."
"And you have shoes to put back on and we will dance."
Chase nodded her head. "Okay." She said softly.
He kissed the top of her head. "Let's go."
DWDWDW
Jack made tea in the kitchen. "But he's got a Tardis. Maybe the Master went back in time and has been living here for decades."
The Doctor sat at the desk. "No."
"Why not? Worked for me."
"When he was stealing the Tardis, the only thing I could do was fuse the coordinates. I locked them permanently. He can only travel between the 100 trillion and the last place the Tardis landed. Which is right here, right now."
"Yeah, but a little leeway?"
"Well… 18 months, tops. The most he could have been here is 18 months. So how has he managed all this? The Master was always sort of… hypnotic but this is on a massive scale."
"I was gonna vote for him." Martha admitted."
"Really?" The Doctor asked, looking at her.
"Well, it was before I even met you. And I liked him."
"Me too." Jack said, looking at the Doctor. "He married Chase after all."
"Why do you say that? What was his policy? What did he stand for?"
"I dunno?" Martha began dreamily. "He always sounded… good." Her fingers started tapping on the table. "Like you could trust him. Just nice. He spoke about… I can't really remember, but it was good. Just the sound of his voice."
"What's that?" The Doctor asked, looking at her.
"What?" Martha asked, startled.
"That! That tapping, that rhythm. What are you doing?"
"I dunno. It's nothing. It's j… I dunno!'
A tune played on the website.
The Doctor turned on the television. "Our lord and master is speaking to his kingdom."
"Britain, Britain, Britain. What extraordinary times we've had. Just a few years ago, this world was so small. And then they came, out of the unknown, falling from the skies. You've seen it happen… Big Ben destroyed a spaceship over London. All those ghosts and metal men. The Christmas star that came to kill. Time and time again the government told you nothing. Well not me. Not Harold Saxon. Because my purpose here today is to tell you this… citizens of Great Britain… I have been contacted. A message, for humanity, from beyond the stars."
A female sphere came onto a video. "People of Earth, we come in peace. We bring great gifts. We bring technology, wisdom and protection. And we ask in return for your friendship."
"Oh, sweet. and this species has identified itself. They're called the Toclafane."
"What?!"
"And tomorrow morning they will appear. Not in secret, but to all of you. Diplomatic relations with a new species will begin. Tomorrow, we take our place in the universe. Every man, woman and child. Every teacher and chemist and lorry driver and farmer. And every oh, I don't know… medical student?"
The doctor whipped around looking around at Martha before turning the tv around to find a bomb ready to go off. The Doctor grabbed the laptop as the three of them rushed out onto the street just as the front window of her flat exploded. "Alright?" He asked, looking at the two of them.
"Fine, yeah, fine."
"Martha?"
Martha used her mobile.
"What are you doing?"
"He knows about me. What about my family?"
"Don't tell them anything!"
"I'll do what I like! Mum? Oh my God, you're there. I'm fine. I'm fine. Mum, has there been anyone asking about me?" Martha asked her mom hoping that no one had been asking about her. "I can't Not now. Don't be so daft. Since when? You said you'd never get back with him in a million years. Dad? What are you doing thater? Dad? Just say yes or no. Is someone else there? Dad? What's going on? Dad? I gotta help them!" She ran to her car.
"That's exactly what they want! It's a trap!" The doctor yelled.
"I don't care!" She yelled.
The doctor got into the front passenger seat.
Jack quickly got into the back.
Martha drove recklessly down the road.
"Corner!" The Doctor yelled.
Martha took the corner tightly and the tires squealed. She pulled out her phone, putting it on speaker. "Come on Tish. Pick up."
"Martha, I can't talk right now. We just made first contact. Did you see…. What are you doing?! Get off! Linda, tell them!"
"What's happening?! Tish!" She glanced at the Doctor. "It's your fault. It's all your fault." She came around the corner. She stopped the car and saw her mother.
"Martha, get out of here! Get out!" Francine yelled at her daughter.
"Target identified." The woman said.
The police took position.
"Martha, reverse!" The Doctor yelled.
"Take aim…"
The police took aim.
"Get out, now!" The Doctor yelled, gripping onto the back of the seat.
Martha reversed and did a three point turn.
"Fire."
The police opened fire on the car.
"Move it!" Jack yelled ducked a little bit.
The back window shattered.
"Now I really wished that Chase was here." Jack said softly.
"The only place we can go… planet Earth. Great." Martha said sarcastically and visibly upset.
"Careful." The Doctor said.
"Now, Martha, listen to me. Do as I say. We've gotta ditch this car. Pull over. Right now!"
Martha pulled over the car.
They got out of the car and began to walk on foot.
"Martha, come on." The doctor said softly.
Martha called her brother. "Leo! Oh thank god! Leo, you gotta listen to me. Where are you? Leo listened to me. Don't go home, I'm telling you. Don't phone mum or dad or Tish. You've gotta hide. On my life. You've gotta trust me. Go to Boxer's Stay with him. Don't tell anyone. Just hide."
"Oh. a nice little game of hide and seek. I love that. But I'll find you, Martha Jones. Been a long time since we saw each other. But be what, one hundred trillion years?" The Master asked.
"Let them go Saxon." Martha growed out.
The Doctor wheeled about.
"Do you hear me?! Let them go!"
The Doctor took her phone from Martha. "I'm here."
"Doctor."
"Master."
"I like it when you use my name."
Chase laughed lightly.
"You chose it. Psychiatrist's field day."
"As you chose yours. The man who makes people better. How sanctimonious is that?"
"So… Prime Minister."
"I know. It's good, isn't it?"
"Who are those creatures? Cause there's no such thing as the Toclafane. It's just a made up name like the Bogeyman."
"Do you remember all those fairy tales about the Toclafane when we were kids? Back home. Where is it, Doctor?"
"Gone."
"How can Gallifrey be gone?"
"It burnt."
"And the Time Lords?"
"Dead."
"The witches?"
"Chase is the only one alive."
"And her planet?"
"It burnt. And the Daleks… more or less. What happened to you?"
"The Time Lords only resurrected me because they knew I'd be the perfect warrior for a Time War. I was there when the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. I saw it. I ran. I ran so far. Made myself human so they would never find me because… I was scared."
"I know."
"All of them? But now you, which must mean…"
"I was the only one who could end it. And I tried. I did. I tried everything."
"What did it feel like, though? Three almighty civilizations burning. Oh, tell me, how did it feel?"
"Stop it!" The Doctor yelled.
"Surely you knew what it felt like." Chase said, drawing out her tone pulling herself closer to the Master.
"You must have been like God."
"I've been alone ever since. But not anymore. Don't you see, all we've got is each other."
"Are you asking me out on a date?"
"You could stop this right now. We could leave this planet. We could fight across the constellations if that's what you want. But not on Earth."
"Too late."
"Why do you say that?"
"The drumming." He drums his fingers on the table. "I thought it would stop, but it never does. Never ever stops. Inside my head, the drumming doctor. The constant drumming."
"I could help you. Please, let me help you."
"It's everywhere. Listen, listen, listen." He taps on the table. "Here come the drums. Here come the drums."
A man leaning on a building begins tapping his hands against his legs.
"What have you done? Tell me how you've done this. What are those creatures? Tell me!."
The Master sits in front of his laptop. "Oh look you're on tv."
"Stop it, answer me!"
"No, Really you're on telly." He clicked it on to the BBC newscast. "You and your little band, which, by the way, is ticking every demographic box, So congratulations on that. Look, there you are! Ha!"
The Doctor looked at the TV in a shop.
"They are known to be armed and extremely dangerous." The BBC newscaster said.
"You're public enemies number one, two, and three. Oh, and you can tell handsome Jack that I've sent his little gang off on a wild goose chase to the Himalaya so he won't be getting any help from them." He switched to CCTV outside of the shop to see Martha and Jack to join the Doctor. "Now go on, off you go. Why not start by turning to the right?"
The Doctor turned and noticed the camera. "He can see us." He used his sonic screwdriver on the camera, destroying it.
"Oh, you public menace. Better start running. Go on. Run!"
"He's got control of everything." The Doctor exclaimed.
"What do we do?" Martha asked, looking at the Doctor in concern.
"We've got nowhere to go." Jack stated solemnly.
"Doctor, what do we do?"
"Run for your life, Doctor!"
"We run." The Doctor stated sadly.
The doctor, Martha, and Jack began to run through the shopping arcade.
"I said, '' Run!"
Chase and the Master laughed as they watched the Doctor, Martha and Jack run away. The Master held Chase close to him running his hand soothing up and down her side enjoying her company. He never thought that he would have a company of a woman with him right at this moment and he was going to enjoy every single living moment with her.
