As Chopper kept working on the counteragent for the drug, Zoro and the girls decided to search the area. Nami pointed out (rightfully) that Zoro couldn't be trusted to do something like that-since the odds of him finding his way back alone were slim. The latter however merely snapped at her and stormed off, leaving an amused Robin looking on.
They didn't get far though, as something rather strange happened. Suddenly, the winds picked up fast around them. Nami barely managed to warn them to take over as they increased in intensity-and not a moment too soon. They became so strong, they nearly ripped trees out of the earth. They held on to some rocks to ensure they wouldn't be blown away. Something flashed and a blast of fire and another of ice nearly hit them but Robin and Zoro ducked in time. In minutes, the winds died down.
"What the hell just happened?'' Zoro grunted as he stood.
Nami frowned in confusion ''I barely felt something and the next thing I know...''
"Well, couldn't it have been magic?'' Robin suggested, making the two look at her. ''We did hear about another wizard in Skypiea. He might actually be here.''
"Good point. It looks like it's only us around here though.'' Nami began looking around.
Zoro nodded ''How did he pull this off...?''
If they had looked closer, they would've seen a pair of staves stuck between some clouds-just before they fell apart...
The three discovered something attacking their ship, it was flying very fast as the force of the attack began to rattle Merry. It looked vaguely like a cloud. Alarmed, they hurried over to find a number of earth and white golems slowly approaching the ship.
Zoro grimaced, grabbing one of his swords. ''Oi, someone go warn Chopper-we've gotta take care of this.''
"Leave that to me.'' Robin returned, hurrying back to the ship.
Nami also braced herself for battle, her hands tightening on the Climatact. She could see that Miguel's runic protection was still working on Merry but for how long?
Shaking the thought, she proceeded to conjure some cool balls over the white golems. In moments, she created a big cloud over them as it proceeded to rain. Her lips twitched as she saw their forms begin to quiver, realizing her conclusion was accurate-those golems were made of clouds.
Well, she knew just what to do here.
Zoro smirked as he cut one of the earth golems in half, seeing Nami dispose of her quarry with ease by manipulating her Climatact's abilities. It looked like she had little trouble on her end. Well, it meant he could focus on the enemies.
"Tiger Hunt!''
As Robin arrived at the Merry, she quickly realized that what they dealt with was likely a distraction. The reason being the armed enemies flying above the ship. They seemed to be storming through whatever areas they could reach. Robin aligned her arms, making her move before they noticed her.
Six arms sprouted on two of the soilders, twisting their bodies around and making them fall into the jungle. This was her Seis Fleur: Twist. While this did bring her to the enemy's attention, she wasn't too worried. In seconds, six arms arms sprouted on the two present enemies, clutching them enough to crack their backs. This was Seis Fleur: Clutch.
Robin hurried to the infirmary, just in time to see one of the enemies get thrown out the window. Chopper whirled around to face her, preparing an attack, now in Heavy Point. He relaxed upon seeing a friend ''Sorry, Robin-I've been on edge...''
"It's quite all right. If anything, it's good to see you weren't caught off guard. What about Quartermaster-san?''
Chopper grimaced, stepping aside to reveal the bed where the sleeping Miguel lay. ''I was almost done with the counteragent to that drug before those creeps showed up-just what're they up to?''
Robin spotted another enemy flying from the window ''I have a few guesses but why don't we see if we can get the answers straight from the source?''
Zoro smirked as he cut down more golems with the new attack he had perfected recently. This was as good as target practice to him. Likewise, Nami didn't seem to be having much trouble on her end, electrocuting the golems she was facing.
Zoro knew there were more enemies around the ship but Chopper and Robin would have to handle that themselves. Backing away now would mean getting boxes in and that was the last thing they needed. They were right in the enemy's strongshold after all, who knew when things would get worse?
He held up a sword before performing a circular swing ''36 Pound Phoenix!''
A glowing wave flew out, made from air itself, slicing two more golems in half. Zoro fingered his other two swords before charging back into the fray.
Nami huffed as she watched him fight ''I bet he's enjoying himself...jeez-Cool ball!''
As she disposed of three golems by making it rain around her, Nami spotted a big figure flying towards Merry. He held up something she couldn't quite see before ramming the ship, the force nearly making it fall. ''What-?!''
Chopper yelped as the ship shook, grabbing Miguel before he fell ''Whoooaa-what was that...?!''
Robin spotted Yama coming back through the window, leading her to grab Chopper and get him out of the infirmary. Her eyes narrow at the sight of two enemies, raising her arms ''Clutch!''
The second one charged at Chopper, who ducked before he could strike, making him miss. ''They're the same as that guy...''
"Yes, take Quartermaster-san below deck. That should have to do for now.'' Robin stated.
Nodding, the reindeer was about to do that when the other enemy came back to block his path. This one seemed was more obese than the other enemies, wearing a toga with an orange sash. ''Don't get cocky just because you beat a few minions, I-Commander Yama-will show you what the Divine Soldiers can do!''
With this declaration, he attacked ''Mountain Punch!''
Chopper reacted fast, blocking his oncoming punch by shifting into Guard Point before headbutting him. Yama charged back again, only to be surprised when Chopper held Miguel away while defending himself with ease. ''Back off, you jerk!'' Grabbing Yama's wing, he shifted back to Arm Point and threw him away.
Yama growled as he steadied himself, forced to stop when a number of arms sprouted on his back. Robin quickly made the arms slap him repeatedly, knowing she likely wouldn't be able to use a clutch now. The angry man grabbed his sash and lashed out, sending a thin wave of air-not towards either of them but at Miguel. He smirked at Chopper's outcry of alarm, the reindeer managing to push him away in time. ''You care that much about him? Good luck trying to keep him safe!''
He sent out two more air waves, which Chopper evaded. The third one made him fall in his rush but he was only relieved that he managed to protect Miguel. Robin noticed how Yama stopped, realizing he couldn't do that attack continously. Thinking fast, she conjured a pair of arms that grabbed the sash and threw it overboard, leaving the man alarmed as he hurried to grab it.
Settling Miguel on a side, Chopper smiled gratefully at Robin who inclined her head with a smile of her own. The reindeer hurried to punch Yama as he flew, striking the side of his head and leaving him dizzy.
"W-why you...!'' He grunted, shaking his head. Chopper was about to attack again only for the man to fly up high. ''Take this-Mountain Drop!''
Flipping several times, the man aligned himself to unleash a drop kick. A second later though, he was struck by a glowing wave of air, that made him gasp as he fell. The newly arrived Zoro proceeded to knock him out with a follow up attack, leaving him to crash on the end of the altar.
"Zoro!'' Chopper called out happily, the first mate smirking back.
"Hey, I see you've been busy.''
"No kidding...'' Nami came along, looking surprised at the unconscious enemies nearby. ''...is that all of them? You know what they're after?''
"About that...'' Robin started.
"Pathetic.''
Everyone started at the voice, a dark skinned man in an aviator helmet with wings holding a red javelin flew high above them. ''This is all those foolish soldiers can do? They really shame us all...'' He humphed, glancing at the group. ''...so you're the sacrifices? Not much to write home about...'' His eyes landed on Miguel. ''...and this must be the brat he wants...honestly, wasting my time on this? Ridiculous.''
Zoro frowned ''What?''
Robin got to interrogate one of those creeps before-he made it clear that while they were supposed to go after us-someone told them to get Miguel.'' Chopper explained.
"Hey, come to think of it-back when I happened to come here, I heard them talking about a man with strange abilities...'' Nami recalled. ''...seeing what we just dealt with...''
"Yeah, Pagaya said there was another wizard here.'' The doctor nodded. It was a shame they never got around to finding out more-just what did this person want from Miguel?
"Ho? So he's one of them too?'' The newcomer arched an eye. ''Well then...'' He brandished his javelin, waving to unleash a big wave of fire that forced the three Straw Hats to dodge. Thankfully, whatever flames that reached Merry were repelled for the most part by the protection of the runes.
Zoro charged, preparing to unleash and attack, only for the man to fly out of his range. And likewise, when Robin tried to use her powers, he dispersed of the arms with his javelin, making her wince. ''Don't think I'm anything like the fools you just fought, I'm Shura, one of God Enel's four priests!''
"As if we care! Eat this!'' Zoro sent out a 36 Pound Phoenix at him but again Shura flew up.
Nami tried to think, if he could dodge her friends' abilities like that then the same would happen if she attacked. Wasn't there a way to stop that?
Shura moved again before she could decide what to do, unleashing a big wave of fire towards Robin and Chopper. ''Look out!''
But it struck as the two tried to get, leaving Shura to smirk ''It was only a matter of time...'' He blinked, noticing something strange amidst the flames. ''...what...?''
His targets were reappeared, both unharmed. That was all thanks to the shimmering shield of golden light protecting them. Chopper perked up, recognizing the Ark Shield. His suspicions were confirmed when he saw Miguel standing not too far away, his hand aimed at the two of them. ''Miguel!''
The latter appeared weary but he managed to smile at his friends ''Looks like I made it...''
"Hm, I wondered if I'd get to see what you can do, boy.'' Shura grunted, leveling his javelin. ''Now let's find out why Vharley is out to get you...''
Miguel's eyes widened at the name and likewise, recognition flashed across Robin's expression at the name. Shura raised an eye, picking up on this ''Hm, I take it that man's claim to fame was truthful?''
Miguel scowled ''If it's the same person I have in mind than it's nothing to be proud about.'' He started as Shura flew at him, thrusting the javelin. Miguel ducked quickly, requipping his sword before using it to blow him away.
Steadying himself, Shura gathered more speed to strike. He proceeded to trap Miguel, Zoro and Nami in what they belatedly realized were some thin strings. Zoro struggled to move his arms as the enemy prepared to strike again, cursing. Miguel ended the problem by using his sword to conjure a very sharp blade of air which cut them free, making Shura recoil. ''What?!''
Miguel felt black spots invade his vision and he quickly shook his head. The drug was still affecting him and the main reason he could fight now was Chopper's counteragent.
Watching Zoro lock weapons with the enemy, he willed himself to move. He couldn't let this stop him. Shura tried using his strings again but Miguel was able to cut through them once more. As they continued to fight, they realized they could only rarely strike Shura succesfully-as for some reason, the man managed to evade their moves.
"I thought he could just evade our moves because he can fly but...'' Nami started.
Robin nodded ''It's more than that-he seems to dodge just after the boys made their moves just now. He seems to be able to predict their moves.''
Shura's smirk at this told her they had got it right. But how did he even do this? He rushed, blowing the boys down with his speed before hurling his javelin at the girls. Robin created a number of arms to grab it before using them to hurl it right at him. Shura swiftly grabbed it however ''Hmph, if you think such an attack would get me, you're sadly mistaken. You may have manage to bypass my Ordereal of String but it doesn't matter in the end, I'll finish you!''
He flew, leveling his javelin before unleashing a large spiraling burst of flames. The sight made Miguel stiffen while Chopper recoiled, they might have managed to avoid the worst of the fire so far but this...?!
Miguel had an idea ''Zoro. Hold this.'' Blinking, the latter took the offer flame sword. ''Hold it up in the fire's direction.''
Albeit confused, Zoro proceeded to do, thinking the latter had his reasons for this.
Miguel held back a grimace as the fire came close, reminding himself to focus. He thought back to Ace's training, a particular piece of advice the older man gave him coming to mind.
'Remember, fire might be dangerous but it can also protect. The same goes for the other elements. It's all about using it right.'
Miguel tapped the sword, willing some power to it. The blade glowed red and the fire attack was drawn to it, with the blade absorbing it in an instant.
"WHAT?!''
Taking advantage of his shock, Zoro attacked with Tiger Hunt, the empowered flame sword burning Shura's back too. Smirking, he looked back at Miguel ''Nice one-can you do it again?''
"In a few minutes, maybe. It's a second ability in my swords but forcing too much means it'll only end badly.''
"Got it.'' Zoro's eyes narrowed as Shura pulled himself up. Seeing Miguel's reaction as flames gathered around his javelin, he whispered ''You've gotta focus.''
The latter nodded tersely, using Meteor to avoid Shura as he thrust the flaming javelin at him. Robin distracted the enemy by slapping him with her powers and Nami conjured rain to stop the flaming spear. Shura mocked the attempt as he would only need a few minutes to restart it, thinking it meaningless.
Zoro and Chopper were able to get a couple of hits in with Miguel's help, with him managing to slam Shura down with gravity spell. The young man winced as he felt the weariness creep up on him again, wondering how long he would last.
Shura must have seen it too, for he grinned ''You're just stalling! The battle will be mine the second he's out of the picture!''
Zoro held up his sword ''Don't underestimate us!'' Although he would admit that Miguel's abilities were the main reason they were able to really make progress here. It looked like their friend was struggling against the drug, they had to end this soon.
"We made it!''
Luffy's happy cry resounded around them as they broke through the forest path, getting closer to where their friends are.
He, Usopp and Sanji had just defeated another of Enel's priests, having taken a boat with Conis' help to reach Upper Yard. It had been a troublesome situation since they knew so little about how people here battled but they managed to pull it off.
"I swear nothing ever fazes you...'' Usopp shook his head. That ordeal had taken years of his life. ''...I don't want to hear the word surprise again anytime soon.''
"Quit moaning-we've got work to do!'' Sanji straightened his tie. ''It's about time we made it-Nami-swan and Robin-chan what a man I am by saving them both! They won't have anything to fear again!''
"Nice to see you've got priorities straight like always.'' Usopp drawled sarcastically.
Luffy snickered ''That's Sanji for ya.''
Shura held up his javelin, which was burning once again. Nami wondered if she could pull off another Rain Tempo or maybe something stronger but that strange prediction ability was giving them plenty of trouble.
Luckily, a solution wasn't too far off.
Miguel watched Shura warily ''...I've got an idea-it might help give you an opening. Just go without.'' Zoro and Chopper nodded.
As he raised an arm, all of Miguel's swords appeared above him, to general confusion. Shura scoffed ''Just what are you playing at?''
Miguel thrust his arm down and all the swords flew out. The enemy was preparing to dodge but the former merely snapped his fingers, the wind sword unleased a sudden gust that caught him off guard. Miguel waved a hand and the other swords also activated. A burst of water hit his face, thick shards of ice and earth his arms before the final sheathed blade hit his gut, leaving him winded.
Zoro and Chopper shared looks and grinned, making their move.
"Roseo Coronedo!''
"One Sword Style: Lion's Song!''
Shura let out a pained cry as he fell, now defeated.
Nami perked up ''All right!'' Robin sighed in relief, smiling as well.
"It worked-!'' Chopper started when Miguel fell to his knees, breathing heavily. ''-are you okay?! Oh, the drug...!''
"I figured it was something like that...'' Shaking his head, he looked up as doctor and first mate helped him to his feet. ''...thanks, I'm just tired.''
"Relax, you did great.'' Zoro assured, leading him to sit against a wall.
Nami nodded ''Count on you to come through-just leave things to us now.''
"I'm more amazed he pulled it off...I barely finished the counteragent and I didn't think it'd would work when I don't know all of the drug's components.'' Chopper confessed. ''Miguel's willpower is amazing.''
"I'd have to agree.'' Robin's expression softened, seeing the young man in question slump against the wall. Little wonder he was tired after all this.
As Chopper took their friend to rest below deck, the other three exchanged looks. Nami frowned as she thought of the battle ''Say, Robin-it kind of looked like you know who this other wizard is...''
"I've heard of him in passing, yes.''
Zoro raised an eye ''Going by what Miguel said, I guess what you're about to tell us isn't good.''
She inclined her head ''Vharley's a criminal.'' The two blinked. ''He betrayed Elysia's council regarding their stance against the World Government. He was absolutely insistent that they had to retaliate no matter the cost.''
"But, that's crazy-I get that what the government did to Elysia was beyond horrible but if they pushed the fight they would've definitely lost! It would've been the end for them!'' Nami exclaimed.
"Exactly. Many Elysians understood that as well.'' Robin returned. ''But Vharley was determined-he even tried to make his own nation years ago and gather an army. I never found out how but his plans were sunk and he went off the map. People were starting to assume he died...''
"And he somehow found his way here.'' Zoro crossed his arms. ''If he's in cahoots with those other creeps, it's safe to say he's been around for a while.''
Nami nodded ''Wonder what he wants with Miguel though-does he hate wizards who didn't agree with him or something?''
"From the looks of things, I'd say we're going to find out soon...'' Zoro trailed off.
Luffy and the others arrived a while later. They were accompanied by Gan Fall and Pierre, to the others' surprise. Chopper ran to hug Luffy and Usopp, who laughed and returned the gesture. Sanji ran over at the same time, calling for Nami and Robin.
"I was so worried about you two-I'm so glad you're okay!'' He cooed. ''Were those brutes hard on you? I'm sorry I wasn't here before...!''
"What're we, chopped liver?!'' Chopper barked. "And who are you calling a brute?!"
"Don't bother with that moron-he has a one track mind.'' Zoro deadpanned. Though he couldn't help but smirk when the girls waved the cook off, simply walking past him a moment later.
"So what's he doing here?'' Nami inquired, nodding at Gan Fall, who smiled.
"Usopp called him.'' Luffy informed. ''He had the whistle since you guys were trying to figure out a better place to put it, remember?''
The navigator hummed, thinking of the talk shortly before they reached Skypiea. They had been so distracted by the arrival that she never gave it much thought afterwards. Luffy looked back at him ''But man, you're pretty tough, weird old guy! You really helped us out back there!''
Gan Fall chuckled ''I'm glad to hear it. You handled yourselves very well though, especially with that strange ordeal.''
"Ordeal?'' Zoro blinked. ''Didn't that flaming asshole say something about that too?''
Nami nodded ''An Ordeal of String, apparently...''
"You dealt with one of those too? Were you guys okay?'' Usopp asked.
"Sure, that jerk seemed pretty shocked when Miguel cut through his lousy strings. It was pretty satisfying to see.'' Nami returned.
"You guys are so lucky...!''
"I'd have to agree. Your friend's abilities are certainly handy-where is he by the way?'' Gan Fall wanted to know.
Luffy spotted Miguel walking over, seeming worn but better than earlier ''Hey, Miguel!''
The latter smiled ''Hey, you three-glad to see you're doing all right. You too, Gan Fall.''
"Same to you, child.'' He returned amiably. ''It seems you've had quite the busy time.''
"You can say that again...so what happened after they took us?'' Nami inquired.
Sanji explained how they tried to catch up to the group, with some help from Conis. She gave them the Crow, an old, worn down boat which managed to get them this far. But it was actually a test...
"A test? For what?'' Chopper blinked.
"They thought we'd abandon you.'' Luffy harrumphed. ''Those white jerks were awful to Conis too-even after they made her help them.''
"Wait, what?!''
"What do you mean?'' Zoro frowned.
Robin blinked ''Are you saying Conis-chan called the White berets back then?''
"It's not her fault though!'' Sanji said quickly. ''Luffy's right, she was basically strong armed to do it. God made this decree that everyone had to call his enforcers if people from the Blue Sea showed up. She was really scared-and she felt horrible about it.''
"Oh...looking back, it does add up. When I think back on how she talked about him...Those rules are too much but they put up with them because they're that scared of Enel...'' Miguel concluded.
"Exactly. That asshole tried to kill her too.'' Sanji grunted, describing how Gan Fall arrived in time to save Conis from a lightning bolt sent by the 'God'. ''I really have to thank you again for that, by the way. I couldn't stand it if anything had happened to her.''
"Oh, it's nothing to be thanked for. I was glad to help.''
"Then we took the Crow and made it to the Ordeal of Balls...'' Usopp paused. ''...oh, they have four of those by the way. Besides the two we saw, there's the iron ordeal and the swamp one.''
"Balls? How are those dangerous?'' Zoro quirked a brow.
"It was really annoying. He'd get all those ball shaped clouds and then there's all sorts of nasty surprises hidden there.'' Sanji huffed. ''We got to deal with those well enough but then thatt bastard priest started predicting our moves...''
The former blinked ''Wait, your opponent did that too?''
"Eh? You mean...?''
"Ah, yes-that's an ability used by experienced warriors around here.'' Gan Fall explained. ''It's called mantra. Basically, the user can detect the opponent's voice and react accordingly.''
" A voice?'' Nami raised an eye, surely, it wasn't that simple...
"Oh, I don't mean a normal voice.'' Gan Fall stopped to think. ''I suppose the best way to put it is that it's the ability to use spiritual energy. Using it allows you to either predict an opponent's moves, form a protective shell of energy around yourself or even over power another's will. But I've heard that the last ability is exceedingly rare, in fact, I've only read about it in books.''
"Wow...'' Chopper trailed off.
"This sounds awesome! Do you think I can learn it?! Can you show me how?'' Luffy asked eagerly.
The man looked amused ''That wouldn't be a problem, my young friend. However, I'm unable to use it.''
" Aww...''
Zoro looked pensive, this explained a lot about their battle earlier. So Shura had a hard time dealing with Miguel's magic because he couldn't predict it...
"So is it just Enel and his soldiers who use it?'' Sanji inquired.
"Well, no-the ability is rare but I've met mantra users from the Blue Sea.'' was the response. ''They have a different name for it but I can't remember what it was...'' Shaking his head, he carried on. ''...since you all planned to leave, I should inform you that it would be difficult. Enel has you in his sights now. To say nothing of his men or his accomplice...''
"Accomplice?'' Usopp blinked.
Chopper frowned ''There's another wizard here-he tried to send enemies to get Miguel.''
"I meant to ask you about that, actually...'' Robin looked at the young man in question. ''...do you know if he's hunting you for a reason or does he simply resent other wizards?''
"Well, supposedly he was really angry at wizards who refused to follow his schemes. Although...this is only a guess but after what Uncle Caelum said, he might be after me specifically.'' At their surprised glances, he explained. ''I've never heard the full story but he hates my dad, they fought once and Vharley lost. He was supposed to be chosen for the Council but the vote is from our people. My dad and uncle were chosen over him, they wanted to focus on rebuilding the nation. He left Elysia for the last time after that, swearing that he'd get revenge one day.''
"Jeez, so he's basically someone who can't let go of an old grudge, huh?'' Sanji looked disgusted.
Chopper frowned ''What a jerk.''
"Oh and...if Enel can hear us like Conis said and given how much you look like your dad, he probably does know who you are.'' Nami realized.
Robin took the time to tell Gan Fall a little about Elysia, leaving him and Pierre stunned ''My, that's terrible...'' He looked at Miguel. ''...if your theory is accurate, that's a ridiculous reason to hold a grudge. Your father and uncle were correct, a nation is nothing without its people. That war was already senseless. Pressing on would've cost them everything.''
Miguel nodded ''It's understandable to hate all what happened. Many of us do but he went too far.''
"Well, it was definitely the right choice-if they let a moron like that take charge, your home might have been doomed.'' Sanji stated.
The cook had a thought ''Oh, hey-did you see that bazooka using bastard from before?''
Chopper replied negatively, having not thought of that. ''Say, old guy, who was he? Do you know?''
"I'm afraid I do.'' Gan Fall grimaced. ''I've heard of a single warrior using that weapons. He is Wyper, a member of the Shandians. You see, long ago, they made it to the Blue Sea. They settled on an island called Jaya. The Shandians are the descendants of the people from back then, the Shandorians. They quickly became one of the most powerful societies in the area-but their homeland was invaded 800 years ago...'' Robin's eyes widened at this, instantly thinking of the Void Century. ''...and the remnants wound up here thanks to the Knock Up Stream. Being resilient, they managed to pick up the pieces and rebuild. But around 400 years ago, the ancient Skypieans stole their home, desiring the Vearth.''
The reindeer started ''That's terrible!''
"Yes and they've come to resent us ever since. I've tried to help them before but many simply wouldn't listen. Enel's arrival simply made everything much worse.'' He paused. ''I've seen them earlier, it seems an army of Shandians intend to storm Upper Yard and take down Enel.''
Sanji looked curious ''Think they'd pull it off?''
"Perhaps, I can't say for certain. Enel's power is frightening. I admire their courage and I would help them if I could but it simply isn't feasible. They resent Skypieans to this day.''
"But the ones involved in the war died so long ago-what's the point of holding on to those feelings now? Wouldn't it be better to make peace?'' Nami wondered.
"Maybe, but I don't think we'd be able to say that freely if we were involved.'' Zoro stated.
"I guess you're right...''
They setted at an area surrounded by trees and the boys prepared a fire. By preparing the maps of Jaya and Skypiea they had come across, Nami was able to figure out that the city of gold was in the skull's right. It made her realize that Miguel's guess was right and Upper Yard was a part of Jaya which had been rocketed up here with the Knock Up Stream, thus they know where the city of gold is. The crew was more than happy to agree to head off tomorrow, albeit with reservations from Usopp who was too scared of Enel, but the others were all set.
"Come on, what kind of pirates would we be if we didn't take the chance to get gold?'' Luffy asked cheerfully.
"Normally, I'd agree with you but in this situation...'' Usopp looked nervous. ''...there's still God, you know?''
Zoro arched an eye ''And since when were you such a believer?'
"It's not about that-I was taught to respect people with power. I want to make it out of here alive!''
"Well, look at it this way, Long Nose-kun. It's either the possiblity of facing this god or the certainty of facing Navigator-chan after denying her the opportunity to find treasure.'' Robin pointed out, the sniper stiffened at the valid point. ''I may not have been with you for long but even I can tell that's a horrible idea.''
"Y-you got that right...'' He mumbled, gulping. ''...man, talk about being between a rock and a hard place.''
"It's settled-we'll be off first thing in the morning!'' Luffy declared, earning a round of agreement from the others.
Luffy decided to celebrate the oncoming prospect by throwing a huge bonfire. Usopp enthusiastically joined him, both ignoring the girls pointing out that it just wasn't practical. It could easily draw the enemies here. But the boys were determined to go all out. They were even joined by some Cloud Wolves, after one had been cowed into submission with a single punch from Nami.
"How did she do that?'' Gan Fall stared.
"Nami's scarier than any of those guys.'' Luffy stated with a shrug.
They're right-this really isn't a good idea.'' Zoro muttered.
Sanji decided to get back at him for the teasing back in Jaya ''Oh? Is our big, macho tough swordsman unable to fight more enemies?''
The former rolled his eyes ''That's not it, idiot.'' He gave a pointed look to their left, making a curious Sanji follow his line of sight.
The blond blanched upon realizing he was looking at Miguel, which was things fell into place for him. ''...Shit.''
"So, how did you come to find that old map anyway?'' Gan Fall inquired.
"Oh...'' Nami proceeded to tell him about their visit to Jaya and meeting Cricket, leaving him stunned.
"My, that Noland has a descendant? And he believed is our lands' existence for so long...? Incredible...'' He trailed off. ''...if only there was a way to let him know Skypiea is here...''
"Luffy and Miguel were talking about that-I don't know if there's any chance we can leave Jaya after leaving but it would be great if there was some way we can just show him...'' She trailed off.
" Indeed.''
Luffy and Usopp tried to cajole the others into playing around with them, having little success so far. Only some of the Cloud Wolves appeared willing to join them. They approached Miguel and Chopper, only to be disappointed when the two also refused.
"Come on, you guys...Miguel?'' Luffy prodded.
"Sorry, Luffy-not tonight.''
He was about to try again when a fed up Nami snapped "Do you guys have to be so insensitive?! It's obvious why he won't play your stupid games!''
"Eh? But...'' Luffy whined.
Chopper glared at them ''You guys are big jerks!''
Luffy and Usopp seemed to come to the realization then before admitting ''...We forgot.''
"Ah, you want us to turn the fire down or something?'' Usopp offered awkwardly.
Miguel smiled weakly and shook his head ''It's okay...You guys wanted the bonfire right? Go ahead.''
"You sure?''
"Mm, I'm...not really up for any games but this might help in the long run. I'm okay with trying.''
"All right, thanks!'' Luffy grinned before they left. Nami sighed and went to talk to Sanji while Chopper followed her.
"That was very considerate of you.''
Miguel blinked and looked at Robin as she added ''Putting their own feelings first even now, I think they would've understood if you had taken the offer.''
"It's fine...I want it to be.'' Miguel amended. ''You heard how much they're looking forward for this, I don't want to ruin their fun. Besides...I really do want to get over this phobia.''
"Understandable.'' Robin nodded. ''Quartermaster-san, correct me if I'm wrong but from what I gathered, you're one of the survivors of the battle of Port Dianeira, aren't you?''
"...Somehow I'm not surprised you know about that.''
"I've come across a couple of people who mentioned it, it sounds like a nightmare.''
"It really was.'' Miguel grimaced. ''I've been afraid of fire ever since...it just makes me remember all we lost...and the people I've seen die.''
"I see...that certainly explains things.'' She couldn't blame him one bit. If anything, she could relate far more than he knew.
She had a feeling Miguel regretted taking the conversation down such a route because of what he said next ''Ah, well I'm trying to get over it. I don't want them walking on eggshells because of me.'' He leaned back. ''Luffy's just trying have fun. He was pretty frustrated before-I get how he feels. We come to this amazing place and Enel makes a mess of everything before we even know it.''
"True-it really is a disappointment.'' She agreed.
"You just want to look up the history around here, don't you?''
Robin smiled at the teasing tone ''Ara, was I that obvious? It seems I really did wind up with quite the crew this time.''
"I think most of us felt similarly at one point.'' Miguel remarked. ''It's just as well we're the farthest thing from conventional pirates. I'd make a pretty lousy one if that were the case...''
"Hmm, you bring up a good point.''
"...I don't know how to feel about that statement.'' Miguel admitted, not sure what to make of her tone.
Robin chuckled ''Take it as a compliment. I think you're much more likeable this way. I prefer you all this way.''
"Oh. Well, as I was going to say, no complaints here. I wouldn't have the crew any differently either...and you have to admit, seeing that act is pretty entertaining.''
Robin hid a smile, watching Luffy, Nami and Usopp dance with the Cloud Wolves ''Agreed...though I have to say, you are a very caring person, Quartermaster-san.''
He laughed a bit ''I'm just doing what I think is best.''
As the others began heading off to turn for the night, Miguel decided to take some time to work on a few exercises Ace suggested to help with his phobia. The Whitebeard pirate's aid back in Alabasta had actually helped begin to see fire differently, like he used to before the port battle. Perhaps he could pull this off after all...
He was distracted from his plans upon spotting someone walk to his far right, leaving the campsite. He proceeded to follow, calling out a few moments later ''Usopp?'' The sniper looked back at him. ''Can't sleep?''
"Y-yeah, I guess...''
"If this is about tomorrow, it'll be fine. We'll make it that way.'' Miguel returned.
"I know-I know...that's what everyone's telling me!'' He exclaimed, surprising the former. ''S-sorry...''
Miguel looked worried ''...What's going on? You looked like you were having fun before but you were acting strange when Luffy and Sanji told us everything-you barely said anything. Is everything okay?''
"E-eh? Oh, yeah-of course! Nothing fazes this Captain Usopp!''
"...That's about as bad a lie as your eighty thousand followers.''
The sniper grimaced ''...Low blow, man. Come on, it's fine-it doesn't matter!''
"Usopp.'' Miguel gave him a stern look, making him look away. His expression softened ''Hey, we'd help if you'd let us. Isn't that what we established with Nami?''
Usopp couldn't argue with that logic as it was a reason things worked out so well with her. But still...''...You'd think it's stupid.''
"Try me.''
Finally, the sniper lowered his head. It was Miguel, who was quickly becoming a kind, big brother figure to some of the younger members. Chopper adored him and he hit off brilliantly with Luffy right from the get go. Even Nami had once told him that if she tried to think of an older brother the best thing she could think would be someone like Miguel. Usopp found the wizard a very reliable presence, knowing he could trust him with ease.
With that thought in mind, he proceeded to talk about the battle with Satori, the priest their group faced earlier. He hadn't able to do much against the man, struggling just with the Surprise Clouds he kept using. On top of that, his attempt at an invention failed because he stupidly rushed things...
And that guy kept saying I was so weak and pathetic that I couldn't do anything.'' He went on. ''He was right-just look at me now. I was helpless, I just relied on Luffy and Sanji in the end-I couldn't do anything about it! They're always so strong and I'm just...me...just a useless weakling...''
"Enough.''
Usopp looked up at the sharp tone, finding Miguel watching with a frown. ''This is just ridiculous. Why're you believing what he said? Not only is this what the enemies want, it's also completely untrue.''
"No, it isn't! I'm just useless-I keep acting like I want to be a brave warrior but let's face it, how would that work? It's just a dream...you guys are all amazing and look at me. Hell, even today, I kept thinking about running into Enel when we talked about the gold, I was just scared...I still am...''
"Usopp, why do you keep comparing yourself to others?'' Miguel wanted to know. ''At the end of the day, it's useless. You can't really be anyone besides yourself. Look, I know Luffy and the rest of the Monster Trio are stronger than me but there's nothing wrong with that. I've chosen to excel in my own way just like they found their own. Looks like that's something you need to keep in mind. You shouldn't ashamed of failing-it happens to anyone. It's what you do after that which really counts.''
"Y-you think so?''
"I know so.'' He returned. ''Do you have any idea how many times I've messed up with magic? I've been learning since I was five-the stories I could tell you would make you would make your head spin. We're nothing like each other but we came together, we bring something special to the crew. Yes, you're a coward but that's not a bad thing either. You're careful because you want things to work out well for everyone, it shows you care. I think people like you would help balance us out, really. Each and everyone of us- something special to the crew, you're our sniper. The guy who was going to face a whole crew of pirates on his own to protect his home, even when you had it so rough. You fought a fishman alone and won-which is pretty impressive fear, really. Not to mention beating Mr. 4 and his partner. Chopper made it clear that he really was counting on you here.'' Miguel smiled as Usopp's eyes watered ''See-you're focusing on negatives but there's a whole lot of positives to this. You just need to look for them.''
Usopp was touched beyond words, barely believed what he was hearing ''Do you...really mean that?''
"Every word.'' The latter asssured. ''Useless flattery wouldn't help. I told you the other day, there's a reason I count on you for shooting lessons, remember?''
The sniper wanted to cry, these words coming from someone like Miguel, who he not only trusted but admired, touched him deeply. He...he was right, wasn't he? Usopp wasn't as bad as he thought he was? It sounded so simple when Miguel said it and yet those words took a weight off his shoulders. ''I...I'll think about this. I need time to take it in.''
He cleared his throat, trying not to let his tears show. ''All right, come on-we're both here. Captain Usopp is going to turn you into a skilled marksman, mark my words!''
Miguel looked amused ''Lead the way then.''
Both were unaware that Nami, who had woken up due to being a light sleeper, had overheard everything. The girl smiled, also moved by Miguel's wise words, trusting that Usopp would be all right. And she would help make sure of that.
Well, let's stop here.
I hope this was good. I didn't mention the Ordeal of Balls much because it wasn't too different from canon. Gan Fall just came in the midst of it after Usopp blew the whistle to help them.
I thought about how to handle the issue with Usopp a lot and I kept wondering what it'd be like if someone just sat him down and convinced him to talk his issues with them. As mentioned above, it worked this well because it was Miguel, someone he trusts to hear him out. It's not fully resolved yet but it's a complicated matter. Usopp is definitely going to be feeling better soon though. The way I handled things may change things for a couple of arcs, but as much as I love one piece's story, it'd be boring to stick to canon all the time.
Welp, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Till next time!
