Prologue

The queen gazed at the scrolls scattered across the desk. Ink was splashed everywhere, and was splattered all over her talons. Queen Sunbeam sighed. I'll never find a scroll that mentions the Theory. Perhaps there are no different continents after all.

Sunbeam tore one of the scrolls in frustration. And to her surprise, the words started glowing ominously. Terrified, Sunbeam took a cautious step back. Is this… normal? Her eyes widened, as a small black wisp of smoke began to work its way out of the ripped page.

'Hello.' The thing hissed, its voice icy cold, even the wind whistled through the door, despite all the windows being closed.

Gulping, Queen Sunbeam stammered a greeting, 'H-hi?'

The smoke did a spin in the air, before talking back to her, its voice still making Sunbeam shiver. 'I am here for the Immortal Crystals.'

Queen Sunbeam gasped, and took another step back, accidently knocking down a dusty scroll, which fell to the floor, and opening to a yellowed page. 'The Immortal Crystals.' The title read. Below it, a drawing of sparkling pale crystals glimmered, though the sun had set, leaving darkness.

'But only Jewelwings can make those-' She started, but the creature cut her off.

'I didn't think that you'd be so difficult.' It wove its way closer to the horrified queen. 'I guess I'll have to stick with Plan B.'

'W-what's that?' The queen asked, her eyes darting around the room, looking for an escape. I have to get out of here! Who knows what this… thing will do to me.

'Don't. Even. Try.' The smoke curled around Sunbeam, piercing chilliness radiating from its wispy ends. 'I can always catch you.' It whispered in her ears. She wanted to pull away, but that would result in her crashing into the wall… or worse. Just stand here and wait… someone will come… right?

'Do your worst.' Sunbeam gritted her teeth, tensing herself. Please don't do anything.

Da dum. Da dum.

Her heart beat quicker, and she focused on it. It was hard though, having a biting cold twisting around you.

'So you won't get me the crystals?'

'No.' A surge of confidence slammed into Sunbeam, and she readied herself to attack. This creature wouldn't stand a chance against her. Stop acting like you can fight. When have you ever fought in your life? Hah, never.

'Stubborn.' Commented the smoke. 'Get prepared, and let's hope it won't be as painful for you. Some of my other clients have died of shock before I managed to really possess them.'

'Possess? What?' Sunbeam yelled, now leaping forward, and turning towards the smoke.

'Sorry if you die.' The black smoke answered calmly, and before Sunbeam could shout for help, the frigid cold struck her. She collapsed to the ground, pain enfolding her. Oh what have you done…?

And with that, her eyes closed, for what she thought would be the last time. Darkness clouded her sight, and she felt herself drift away, terror clutching at her. Weariness clung to her though, and she eventually gave up, letting the sleepiness sink into her.

You need to get out of this. Was her last conscious thought. And then the reality of what was going on fell, as Sunbeam happily jumped into a dream. But it wasn't pleasant. Every dragon was sending her looks, and these dragons were starving. This dream was turning into a nightmare. One where everything goes wrong. One where everyone hated her.

One where she was was sitting atop a pile of glimmering gems. They looked familiar, but she couldn't place them.

Oh. The Immortal Crystals.

Chapter 1

Dear Starla,

We invite you to join our rebel group against Queen Sunbeam. Here we discuss ways to destroy her greed for the Immortal Crystal, as well as looking into the Theory. More information enclosed. Do not tell anyone about this. Meet us at sundown at the Crystal Caves.

We hope you will consider,

Dewdrop.

Starla read the message carefully, her eyes scanning over each word. She must have read it a billion times before she understood the letter clearly. Who are these dragons? Should I join them? Why did they pick me? Questions swam through her head, confusing her.

Well, I might as well go. She decided. Starla was against the queen, due to her horrific actions. Shrugging she ducked her head outside, noticing that the sun was starting to descend down, its eye-shattering brightness dimming every now and then.

Starla lept outside, stretching her wings and lifting off into the sky. She smiled to herself, breathing in the fresh air. I haven't flown in ages. Since the weather has usually been so bad. Starla considered it lucky that it wasn't snowing like it had been. The air was peaceful and had a nice luke-warm feel.

Soon, she had flown over the hills that bounced up from nowhere. I'm pretty sure that the caves are somewhere around here. A glimmering shape caught her eye. There! She began to fly towards the graceful blob.

It wasn't long before she was only a few metres away from it. But it didn't help when another dragon bashed into her. Ow! Starla yelped as she swerved into a rock. Her wing smashed painfully against it.

Thump!

The two dragons spiralled down, almost hitting the floor, until another dragon swooped down, rescuing them in time. With a thud, they all landed roughly on the floor

Wait a minute… that's Emmie! 'Oh my god I am so sorry about that….. Oh, hi Starla! And whoever you are!' Emmie yelped happily at Starla and the new dragon.

'My name is Dewdrop you know. Didn't either of you read the letter?' Dewdrop replied grumpily.

'I read it,' mumbled Starla, glancing at Dewdrop, wondering what tribe she was. A MistWing probably. She realised looking at the scales.

'Great, let's go now. And who's your yammering friend?' whispered Dewdrop, tilting her head at Emmie. She's very loud. Thought Dewdrop, Starla noticed that she seemed agitated. And over-excited. Dewdrop added, noticing that she was bouncing up and down.

'Please don't say that, she can't help it.' Starla said, not wanting her friend to be upset. But Emmie didn't notice, and neither did Dewdrop. Emmie was too busy trying to explore a dull, normal, boring shrub, and Dewdrop was staring daggers at her.

She is a bit ditzy, bubbly, over-excited…. The MistWing observed.

Stop Dewdrop, Emerald could be your friend, and you don't want her to become your enemy do you so don't think that, it's offensive. 'Stop that, Dewdrop!' Starla shot back, warning Dewdrop to stop.

'EXCUSE ME!? Did you just read my mind!?' Yelped Dewdrop, trying to shield her thoughts. But so many statements popped into her head. Did I really choose the right dragon for the rebels? I should probably kill her. I mean, Cinder doesn't like SparkWings anyway. Besides, she looks VERY nervous. She wouldn't be a great leader at ALL. Starla winced. It hurt to be near someone who offended her like that.

'Who's Cinder?' Starla tipped her head in question, eyes sparkling despite the dying sunlight.

'Cinder is our healer, and she DEFINITELY hates SparkWings. Oh- and are your wings okay?' The dragon asked, glancing over Starla's shoulder and peering at her wings. Dewdrop walked over to her, and not exactly gently, prodded them. Emmie made a rustling noise from the shrub, and started humming to herself.

'OUCH!' screamed Starla. The JewelWing scrambled out of the shrub and gasped,

'WHO'S DEAD!? WHAT'S HAPPENING!?' Everyone was panicking now, and Dewdrop seemed like the only calm dragon at the moment. ' Yikes, stop screaming everyone. OK, so tell me about your mind reading or whatever.'

Chapter 2

Should I really be spilling out all my secrets to her? Starla didn't like the look of that dragon, even if she was the one who sent the Rebels letter. 'Come on, tell me! You owe me remember? I SAVED you.' Dewdrop snapped. No thanks, thank you very much. 'No.' Starla shot back crisply.

'Fine, have it your way.' Dewdrop sighed in frustration.

The three joined wings and helped Starla fly to the caves in silence. Nobody wanted to talk, except Emmie who had realised soon enough that she should shut-up.

As soon as they reached the network of tunnels and caves, Dewdrop stalked off to find the healers, not wanting to deal with Starla. Grr, why can't she tell me. I SAVED HER LIFE. She should be THANKING me, Dewdrop thought angrily.

'Cinder!' She growled, storming into the healer's den. The MistWing poked her head out.

'What is it?' She hastily asked.

'Miss. Bossy over here had done something to her wings.'

'Bring her over here.' Was the reply.

Dewdrop practically dragged Starla over, ignoring the yelps of pain radiating from her. Argh! Ow!

'EXCUSE ME!? Is that a SparkWing!?' A dragon, probably Cinder yelped. Suddenly, a thought flashed in Starla's mind. Oh right. Cinder hates spark wings. But the warning was too late. Cinder pounced on top of Starla, clawing her way to her heart. But before she could, Starla spread her wings and threatened to burn Cinder.

'I wouldn't do that if I were you.' warned Starla as she showed off her sparks. Cinder yelped, turned around and flew at full speed out of the healer caves. Two other dragons came in, not expecting Cinder to be flapping around like a flailing squirrel.

'WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!?' bellowed the new dragon, at the same time Dewdrop leaped up and flew into the dragon beside her and into her wings screaming, 'Mother!'.

'What was that for? Did you miss me that much? It's only been an hour since you last saw me!' the dragon replied.

The other dragon started speaking, 'Yeah so why— Of all the moons! Is that a SparkWing!?'

Dewdrop rolled her eyes and mumbled ' why does everyone make such a big fuss about SparkWings? We have more important matters to discuss.'

But thankfully nobody heard her. ' Miss. Bossywings over here has a damaged wing.' exclaimed Dewdrop sarcastically.

'Oh! I will look at her injury immediately. What's your name honey? Starla? Oh, what a gorgeous name!

Starla came out with bandages wrapped neatly around her right wing. 'My name is Dawn by the way!' shouted Dawn.

'All right, let's show you and Emmie—' Emmie had bounded off and started giving herself a tour. They could hear her screaming something about a massive crystal a few seconds later.

'Fine JUST you around this place.' Dewdrop seemed to have forgotten about their argument.

But right that moment a strong, loud voice came along.

'YOU CAN'T HIDE ANYMORE REBELS, I'M COMING TO FIND YOU.' It was the queen.

Chapter 3

Everyone was screaming with panic. ' This is bad. We have to go! C'mon let's grab the rest of the rebels and get out of here!' Dewdrop yelled over all the commotion.

We're all going to die! We should've NEVER formed this group! What will happen to me? Someone kill me already! Those were all the thoughts Starla heard. It was giving her a headache.

Wow. That must hurt, to hear all those voices at the same time. Dewdrop thought. Starla smiled up at her. The reply was a grunt and a glare.

'I'm not NOT mad at you, it's just I wouldn't want to be you.' Dewdrop declared, though inside she really felt pity. Oh. Nevermind then. Thought an upset Starla.

'Stop hiding, I've already found you.'

Snarled the queen. 'Hurry up, everyone. There's no time to lose! We have to get out of here!' Dewdrop cried, leading everyone out of the caves.

Starla followed, wondering what would happen if the queen caught them. 'Do you have any idea where to hide Starla?' Starla was lost in thought. Before she could answer, Dewdrop's mother, Misty, popped over and started pestering Dewdrop with questions of worry, like 'Are you okay?' or ' I was so worried about you!'

Turning red, Dewdrop shot back saying, 'I'm FINE mum. Don't worry about me!'

Starla finally had a chance to answer. She inserted herself into the discussion, and said ' I know a place to go.'

Dewdrop handed the leading position to Starla, and followed her to a hidden door behind a willow tree. Starla fiddled with a black necklace with a jewel on it that no one had ever seen before.

' What's that?' Dewdrop tilted her head in question, her eyes sparkling of curiosity, even in the dark cave. ' it's my obsidian necklace.' She touched it, enjoying the warmth that sparked onto her talons. Starla finally snapped back into reality, after noticing that Emmie,Dewdrop, and Misty were staring at her.

' Every SparkWing has an obsidian necklace. It's for recharging our sparks. But mine is running low on sparks. I'll have to go to the black lake soon.' More like right NOW. Starla held back a scowl, and instead put on a small fake smile. She took time to get the jewel to the little hole of light, but eventually got it. But not soon enough. Queen Sunbeam was right behind them. The rest of the rebels managed to escape, but Dewdrop, Misty, Starla, and Emmie had to scramble up the willow tree to get away from her guards.

'Don't. Even. THINK ABOUT MOVING.' the queen said calmly.

'Run for it girls, I'll handle her.' whispered Misty.

' I HEARD THAT.' Screeched Queen Sunbeam. She dragged all of them down from the tree, all four dragons yelping in pain from the guards' sharp talons.

And then, just like that, Sunbeam leapt onto Misty and lashed with her claws and tail, snapped Misty's horns off, killing her. The three dragonets tried to resist, but the guards knocked them out.

Dewdrop choked out her last words, ' No, don't go mother….'

And then, the world went black.
