An hour later, the team turned up at the hospital. Kate and Olivia were the first out of the car. Other police from other stations were swarming the place, but Kate was keen to get her hands on the suspect. Storming ahead like she was in charge, Olivia had to pull her back, and she did. Grabbing her by her jacket, she pulled her back, 'Stop for a second. You are not going head first on this.'
Kate, though annoyed, knew where she was coming from, but she was itching to hurt the person responsible. Olivia could see it too, 'We don't take justice into our own hands.'
'Who said I was going to?!' Kate was annoyed, 'Even if I did, it wouldn't be so much of a problem! The bastard probably got to more vulnerable people than we think, and the organization could be hiding shit! There could be more predators and not just him.'
'And we will deal with that when we get to it, if we get to it!' Olivia snapped at her. She looked back at Finn and Amanda, 'You two go on ahead, I'll meet you there.'
The two officers walked ahead, leaving Kate and Olivia alone. Olivia pulled Kate into a waiting room on the side, 'I can't have you on this case if you are intent on screwing up a suspect when we don't know anything yet! I told you that if things become too much, you tell me!'
Kate paced. The anger radiated off of her, 'Many organizations like this hide other predators in plain sight, and even upon discovery, they still continue to not vet their employees properly and it happens over and over again! These boys and girls, men and women can and have been taken advantage of at some point or another, I bet you!'
Olivia sighed, 'I get that you're angry with what happened to your sister, but this isn't the same. Like I told you yesterday, if you enact your own justice, I will have to arrest you myself. I can see why Carmichael sent you here. You have an issue with authority when it comes to cases like this. You need to learn restraint and to let justice take its course.'
Kate laughed, 'That's not why I'm here.'
'You cut off a man's balls, that's why you're here.' Olivia said to her, 'If you want justice for not just your sister, but all the other victims subjected to this? We do it my way!'
'I did it your way when I put El through the court system! There was no justice! There was no justice, so he did it again and he is still walking! I would kill him if I could!' Her voice echoed off of the walls. She stood in the middle of the room, she went quiet for a moment, 'It's not just my daughter that has killed before, I have too. A long time ago, but there was this guy who had photos of all of my kids and I killed him. These people Olivia, these people are everywhere and are one of the many scourges of society.'
'I'm really sorry that you never got justice for El, but you can help me get justice for these people! You care Kate, and that is one of the best qualities about you. You care so much, but you can use all this anger to help others that need it. Killing doesn't help anyone. You have a choice right now. You can help me, or you can go back to the office and go home.' She met her gaze now, 'I can't help you if you don't want to help yourself. That choice is yours.'
Kate considered her options for a minute. It felt like an eternity for Olivia while she waited for an answer. Deep down, neither of them wanted to lose each other. Kate knew that Olivia could help her to heal over time, not just as an officer, but as a person. She couldn't walk away from that now.
Eventually, she turned around and nodded, 'I'll do what I can. Any time I have the urge to hit the guyz or kill him, I leave the room, alright?'
Olivia nodded, giving her a small smile, 'That's a good compromise. Now come on, we have a job to do.'
…
The suspect was being held in an office, surrounded by two other police officers. The suspect in question looked to be in his late fifties. He had thinning hair and wore thin glasses and a white coat. When he set his gaze on Olivia and Kate, he growled in frustration, 'Will you let me go already?!'
'An accusation has been made against you.' Olivia said to him, 'My officers have just informed me that you raped and shot a twenty year old woman who has learning difficulties. She said that you shot her after she told you that she would report you for that very same rape.'
'And she's a mentally retarded young lady, she doesn't know what she is talking about!' The man protested.
Kate narrowed her gaze, 'That's an outdated term, offensive in today's terms actually. Why would Marta lie about that? In fact, when I saw her, she struggles with her speech and can only help us by gesturing to the parts of her body that you touched.' She bit her lip, she was full of attitude, 'Why would she lie?'
He shrugged, 'The parents struggle with the medical bills. It's a con to get money out of me!'
'Why shoot her then? She is defenseless. Her motor functions aren't very good, but she knows her mind very well. Why shoot a young woman that is defenseless? If she was lying, why bother going through all this trouble?' Kate asked him.
'Why are you here anyway?! You're British, you're not American, you have no right being here!'
Kate paced for a second. He sounded exactly like Max Tyler. Her blood was boiling and she was seething. She opened and closed her palms and walked back over to him, 'I'm not British and I'm not English either. Racist as well though, are you? Why even study in this field if the existence of diversity offends you?'
Olivia jumped in, 'That is a very good point. You didn't just end up in this field of work by accident, why be a physician if humanity offends you so much?'
'Even better, why work with vulnerable people? People that can't always protect themselves?' Kate added.
The suspect laughed, 'I see where your anger is coming from. Don't tell me, do you have a retarded kid too? Bet she deserved it with the way you're talking to me.' He was trying to wind her up, and it was working.
Olivia looked up at Kate. She was seething, but she was holding back. This was good, but even Olivia knew there was only so far that could go.
Quickly, Olivia turned her line of questioning, 'What did Marta do to you?'
The suspect was far from done with Kate now, 'Let me guess? Autism? Cripple? Bet she was smacked around the head a few times because her mom never loved her!' He laughed, 'I'm right, aren't I? But the reason you're so angry at me is because she was raped wasn't she? And you couldn't do anything about it. You must lay awake at night wondering if you could have done more.'
Olivia stood up now, 'Okay, now I've heard enough. Doctor Peter Hernandez, you are under arrest for the rape and attempted murder of Marta Clarence. You have a right to remain silent and anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law.'
Peter laughed at Kate as he was brought to his feet, 'You think I don't know about you Kate Fleming? Worst mother in the world. I'm in handcuffs but you? You should be in chains.'
'Shut up!' Olivia snapped at him.
Kate stood by while Olivia took him out of the room. She wouldn't get angry at him while he was still in the same room as her. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction. The anger burned, and she had to learn to control it. Self-control had never been so hard.
….
After work, Olivia had an idea. Throughout the day she had been watching Kate trying in vain to manage her anger when it came to some of the most despicable people on the planet. This gave her an idea. Olivia had gotten changed into her best gym clothes before she left work and she had driven her to the local gym, under the guise of having a post-work workout.
Upon arriving at the gym, Olivia led them through to a private room. Kate looked around and wondered what was going on. She put her things to the side and hung her coat up, following Olivia. Once she'd put her things to the side, Olivia threw some boxing gloves at Kate, 'Put these on.'
Kate laughed nervously as she held onto the gloves, 'Why?'
'Because.' Olivia stated, 'You are struggling with your own self-restraint. You have unresolved anger that I can constantly see bubbling just beneath the surface. You need an outlet? I brought you one.' She stood back, showing her the punching bag.
Kate eyes the punchbag nervously, 'I don't have anger issues.'
Olivia walked over to her, 'You have so much anger burning away beneath the surface and I'm afraid for you. You already chopped one guy's balls off and you killed someone in the past…' She sighed as she reached her, 'I want the best for you, and for you not to get in trouble with me or the law back home, if Earth is your home.' She laughed, 'Go ahead, let it out.'
Kate was nervous, 'There is nothing-'
'That guy said some awful things about your sister earlier. It angered you, you wanted to tear the guys head off.'
'Wouldn't anyone?!' Kate snapped, 'He was an evil bastard and I wanted to bet him within an inch of his life!'
'Go on then.' Olivia walked over to the punching bag and held it for her, 'This punching bag is that guy and every man that has ever hurt you! HIT THEM! GIVE THEM EVERYTHING IN YOU!'
Kate put on the boxing gloves, and considered engaging in hitting the bag. She had to get herself in the mindset, but with Olivia goading her, it didn't take much.
'Every man that has ever done you wrong, every moment in your life that has been crap, let it out! LET IT OUT! HIT THE MAN THAT HURT YOUR SISTER, HIT EVERY MAN THAT EVER HURT YOU!' Olivia shouted at her.
Seconds later, Kate was going like crazy, hitting the punch bag. Olivia didn't know she had such strength in her, but she knew that goading her was working. After two minutes, the fury in Kate's eyes was like something she had never seen before. There were many underlying issues that were going on in Kate's head that she could feel them through the sheer strength that Kate was putting into every punch.
'KEEP GOING!' Olivia shouted at her.
As Kate continued punching, he head went through everything, every time she let her kids down, letting Steve down, the time that she was assaulted sexually and everything she wished she could have changed to not have Jo let her go. She was so angry that she threw all of her strength into it. Her last thought was about Max slitting her throat. The day she thought she was going to die, and yet somehow she was still here. Yes, she was practically immortal, but she didn't understand why she was still alive after everything she had been through. El flashed through her mind one last time when she made the last blow to the bag.
By now she was drenched in sweat and Olivia was holding onto the punch bag with all the strength she could.
When Kate walked away from the bag, she was still breathless and her nose had started to bleed. Inadvertently she had used her powers while being stuck in her head, but it hadn't been noticed by Olivia in the slightest. Instead, she walked over to her, trying to get her breath back herself, 'Are you alright?'
Kate nodded, 'I will be.' She wiped away the blood from her nose and offered her hand to Olivia so that she could remove one of the gloves from her hand. Of course, Olivia helped remove the glove for her, and watched as Kate went to her bag to grab a bottle of water.
Knowing how sensitive of a subject she was dealing with, Olivia approached Kate and the next topic in a gentle manner, 'Does that feel better?'
Kate nodded, giving Olivia a small smile, 'It does, thank you.' She took a large gulp of water and then screwed the lid back on.
'Have you uh, have you considered seeing a shrink?'
Kate laughed, 'I have, I have seen many shrinks and so have my kids. That doesn't help us. We are beyond help for that sort of thing…But boxing? It's a great outlet. Thanks. I wish I'd known, I would have brought my kids in to do something like this.'
'You still can.' Olivia offered her a smile, 'I'm glad I could help. Like I said, my door is always open, but this? If this helps, please, do it because I can't have you getting too angry when dealing with the sorts of people we deal with.'
Kate nodded, 'I'm sorry Captain.'
'You're okay.' Olivia assured her, 'If you're feeling better, we could go and get dinner, or…' A smirk played on her lips, 'While you're still hot and sweaty, we could-'
Kate didn't let her finish the sentence. She launched forward and kissed her, pushing her back into the lockers while they were locked on a passion filled kiss. When Kate pulled away, she giggled, 'Dinner?'
'Dinner or dinner?' Olivia laughed.
Kate bit her lip, 'As in, we need something to eat dinner. The latter can happen later. Come on.' Kate walked ahead of her, and Olivia grabbed her things before following on behind.
