Chapter 3: a Family Reunion

After the plane landed, the group boarded the bus, getting off at a stop between Route 1 and the entrance to Pallet Town. Chase took a deep breath as they began their walk toward Professor Oak's lab.

As they passed a house that looked a bit worn down, the mailbox caught Chase's eye. It read, "Williams-Ketchum."

"That's... Ash Ketchum's house, isn't it?" Rose asked, glancing at Chase.

Chase nodded slowly, feeling a strange pull towards the house. "Yeah, Ash Ketchum, the World Champion, and Misty Williams, the Cerulean City Gym Leader. They disappeared years ago."

Pikachu looked up at the house, its ears twitching as if sensing something familiar. Grookey popped out, looking at the now destroyed house.

"Do you think we'll learn anything about them from Professor Oak?" Albus asked.

"Maybe," Chase replied, his voice carrying a mix of curiosity and hope. "He knew them well. If anyone can help us find out more, it's him."

Rose put a hand on Chase's shoulder. "One step at a time, Chase. We'll get to the bottom of this."

"What happened to them after, Ash led his friends, The Gym Leaders, Trial Captians, Elite Fours, Frontier Brains and Kahunas of the World in that Battle against Team Rainbow Rocket, and all their Admins combined?" He asked. "All I know is My parents were in it but I don't know who they are." Chase said. Then he remembered. "Pikachu, can dig out Pokemon League Expo Hat, from my Backpack, please?"

"Pika!" Pikachu chirped in response, hopping off Chase's shoulder and diving into the backpack. It rummaged around for a moment before emerging with a worn, but carefully preserved, Pokémon League Expo Hat. Chase took it from Pikachu's tiny paws, his fingers brushing over the faded fabric.

"This hat... it was left with me when I was a baby," Chase said, holding it up for the others to see. "It's the only thing I have from my parents, whoever they are." Pikachu nodded, having been with Chase ever since his first time, in the System.

Rose leaned closer, examining the hat. "That's an old design. The Pokémon League Expo hasn't used that logo in years."

Albus nodded, his eyes narrowing in thought. "If this was from the battle against Team Rainbow Rocket, it's possible one of your parents fought in it."

Albus looked at the hat with curiosity. "Did Professor Oak know your parents?"

"I don't know for sure, but if anyone might recognize this hat or know where it came from, it's him," Chase replied, his voice filled with determination. "That battle was legendary. It brought together so many strong Trainers. Maybe Professor Oak can tell us more about who was there and what happened."

Rose glanced at the lab, then back at Chase. "Well, we're about to find out. Let's go in and ask."

With renewed determination, they walked the rest of the way to Professor Oak's lab, the Pokémon League Expo Hat clutched tightly in Chase's hand. The answers he sought felt closer than ever, and with Pikachu by his side, he was ready to uncover the truth about his parents and their connection to that historic battle.

Chase looked at the hat with a mix of curiosity and uncertainty. "This hat... it's the only thing I have left from my father, whoever he was." He paused, running his fingers over the worn fabric. "Maybe someone at the lab can help us figure out more about it."

Albus examined the hat closely. "It looks like it's been through a lot. It might belong to someone really important."

Rose nodded thoughtfully. "If it's connected to a great trainer like Ash Ketchum, maybe someone at Professor Oak's lab can help us piece things together. Even though Professor Oak is gone, there might still be some records or clues."

Chase glanced at Pikachu, who was always by his side, and gave a small, hopeful smile. "Pikachu, do you think we might find some answers here in Pallet Town?"

Pikachu chirped in agreement, its cheeks sparking with determination.

Rose pointed ahead, where the lab was now in view. "Looks like there's still someone taking care of the place. Let's see if they can help us."

As they approached the lab, they noticed a familiar face in a white nurse's outfit tending to the Pokémon outside. Nurse Joy looked up as the group approached, smiling warmly.

"Hello there! What brings you all to Pallet Town?" she asked kindly.

Chase took a deep breath and held out the hat. "I was hoping you might help me figure out more about this. It's the only thing I have from my father, and I was told it might be important."

Nurse Joy's eyes widened slightly as she recognized the hat. "This... this looks like one of Ash Ketchum's old hats. He was a legendary trainer around here." She paused, considering her next words. "I've been helping out at the lab ever since Professor Oak passed and Gary went missing. Maybe we can find some records or notes that could help you."

Chase felt a mix of emotions—hope, anxiety, and a growing sense of determination. "Please, Nurse Joy, I need to know more. I need to find out who my parents are."

Nurse Joy nodded. "Come inside, let's see what we can find."

As they entered the lab, Chase couldn't shake the feeling that he was getting closer to uncovering the truth about his past. Whatever secrets this hat held, he was ready to face them head-on.

As the group stepped into the lab, they were met with the sight of a boy around Teddy's age. He had tan skin, black hair, and piercing viridian eyes. He wore a blue jacket over a black T-shirt, with blue jeans and green fingerless gloves. His red and white baseball cap bore a stylized "C" logo, and a Raichu perched on his shoulder, its eyes narrowed as it surveyed the newcomers.

The boy's gaze locked onto the hat in Chase's hands. His expression darkened instantly, and without warning, he stepped forward aggressively. "That hat—where did you get it?" he demanded, his voice sharp and full of accusation.

Chase, caught off guard, instinctively clutched the hat closer to his chest. "It was my father's," he said defensively. "I'm trying to find out who he was."

The boy's eyes flashed with anger, and Raichu's cheeks sparked with electricity in response. "That hat belongs to my dad! There's no way it could be yours unless you stole it."

Chase's own temper flared. "I didn't steal anything! This is all I have left of my father, and I came here to find out who he was. So back off!"

Before the argument could escalate, Albus and Rose stepped forward to support Chase.

"Hey, back off!" Albus said, stepping protectively next to Chase. "Chase isn't a thief."

"We don't want any trouble, but you're not going to talk to our friend like that," Rose added, glaring at the boy.

The boy, however, wasn't backing down. "You don't know what you're talking about." he shot back, his voice shaking with anger. "That hat is my dad's, and I want to know how you got it!"

Chase refused to back down. "I told you, it was given to me! I'm here to find out who my parents are, and if you have a problem with that, then maybe you should just leave!"

The tension in the room was palpable. It seemed as though a fight was inevitable until Pikachu and Raichu suddenly leapt from their trainers' sides and met in the middle of the room. Instead of squaring off, the two Pokémon exchanged looks and then began sparking in a manner that seemed more like communication than aggression.

Chase and the boy both paused, watching the interaction. Pikachu's eyes widened as it seemed to recognize Raichu, letting out a familiar squeak before nuzzling Raichu affectionately.

Raichu's expression softened, its tail wrapping gently around Pikachu in a brotherly embrace.

The boy's harsh expression wavered as he took in the scene, his anger melting into confusion. "Raichu... do you know this Pikachu?"

Raichu nodded, confirming the bond between them.

The boy's eyes flicked back to Chase, realization dawning on his face. His anger was quickly replaced by a stunned look of recognition. The Orange in the boys black hair, the Viridian in his eyes. "Wait... you're my little brother?" he asked, his voice dropping as the pieces started to fall into place.

Chase stared at him, his own confusion mirrored in his eyes. "What do you mean? I don't even know who you are."

The boy took a deep breath, the weight of the revelation settling in. "I'm Aaron. Aaron Ketchum. And our dad is Ash Ketchum. You're my brother...Chase."

Chase blinked, the information slowly sinking in. He searched his memories, but they were blank—he had been just a baby the last time he had seen Aaron. "I... I don't remember you," he admitted, his voice quieter now, the anger fading as the shock took over.

Aaron sighed, shaking his head. "I can't blame you for that. You were just a baby when we last saw each other. But I remember you, Chase. And I can't believe it's really you."

Chase felt a whirlwind of emotions—confusion, relief, and a sense of belonging he hadn't felt before. "I didn't know. I've been trying to find out who my parents are, and now... it looks like we share the same dad."

Aaron looked at him for a long moment, then nodded. "Yeah, we do. And... I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. I just—when I saw that hat, I thought you took it. It was the only thing I had left of Dad too."

Chase managed a small smile, still processing everything. "I guess we've got a lot to catch up on."

Aaron smiled back, the tension between them finally breaking. "Yeah, we do. But just so you know, being my brother doesn't mean I'm gonna go easy on you in a battle."

Chase chuckled, feeling a new bond forming between them. "I wouldn't want it any other way."

Chase embraced his brother tightly, feeling the bond between them grow stronger. "So do you know what happened to Dad?" he asked, his voice filled with hope.

Aaron sighed, placing a hand on Chase's shoulder. "Sorry, Squirt. That's what I've been trying to figure out ever since I became the Kanto League Champion. I've been searching for him, for Mom, and for everyone else who disappeared—Uncles Gary, Brock, and Tracey, as well as Aunts Violet, Daisy, and Lily. But so far... nothing."

"Wait." Albus interjected, his curiosity piqued. "Who is your mum?"

Aaron glanced over at Albus, his expression softening. "Misty Williams. She's the Cerulean City Gym Leader. Or at least, she was. She's our mom, Chase."

Chase's eyes widened in surprise. "Misty? The one who travels with Dad in all those stories? She's our mom?"

Aaron nodded. "Yeah. She's tough as nails and has a temper that can rival a Gyarados, but she's also the kindest, most loving person I know. She and Dad were inseparable, and they raised us together... until they disappeared."

Chase processed this new information, trying to fit the pieces together. "So, Dad's Ash Ketchum, the World Champion, and our mom is Misty, the Cerulean City Gym Leader... but they just vanished, along with all those other people."

"Exactly," Aaron said, his voice heavy with the weight of his words. "And I've been searching for them ever since. But I could use some help, Squirt." He smiled slightly, looking at Chase with a mix of brotherly affection and determination.

Chase returned the smile, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. "Then let's find them together. We'll figure this out, Aaron. We'll bring them home."

Aaron nodded, his eyes reflecting the same determination. "Yeah, together. We'll find them, Chase."

The group stood in silence for a moment, the gravity of the situation settling in. But with their new bond as brothers and the support of their friends, they knew they could face whatever challenges lay ahead.

"Wait, Mom was the Cerulean City Gym Leader and vanished, but..." Chase paused, trying to process everything.

"Chill, Squirt," Aaron said with a reassuring smile. "Our sister Rachael is running the Gym now. You can still try for a Cascade Badge."

Chase blinked in surprise. "We have a sister too?"

"Yep," Aaron nodded. "Rachael's just as fierce as Mom when it comes to battles. She's been holding down the fort at the Cerulean Gym ever since they disappeared. She's tough, but she's fair. You'll have to earn that Cascade Badge, just like everyone else."

Chase felt a mix of emotions—excitement, anxiety, and a deep sense of belonging. "I... I guess I will then. It feels like there's so much I didn't know about our family."

Aaron chuckled. "Don't worry, Squirt. We'll fill in the gaps as we go. Right now, let's focus on finding our parents and everyone else who's missing. And who knows? Maybe you'll get that Cascade Badge along the way."

Chase nodded, feeling more determined than ever. "Yeah, let's do it." He opened his Rotom Phone, and signed up for the Indigo League. As I did, Albus signed, up for the Junior Frontier Competition and Rose signed up for the Pokemon Contest.

"I have something, for you Chase, Happy Birthday!" Aaron said. Handing Chase a Pokeball, out popped a Charmander.

"Charmander, has been registered to your Pokedex!" His Rotom Phone.

"Thank you, Aaron." Chase said, hugging him.

"Your welcome, Squirt." He said, returning the hug. " Now, go out there and get them." His Raichu noogied me.

Chase opened Grookey's Pokeball. " Pikachu, Grookey meet our newest, teammate." Pikachu and Grookey all greeted and welcomed Charmander to Chase's team.

After that, Chase, Pikachu, Rose and Albus left Pallet Town waving goodbye. "Okay, first, we stop by Viridian Forest to find Pidgeot." Chase said. Looking at the Map.
