Chapter 1
"Kuoh Academy. A all girl school... But why is it suddenly open to guys now?" 17-year-old James wondered aloud, frowning as he looked up at the school's imposing gates.
James stood out with his dark brown hair, almost black under the sunlight, and his eyes—a few shades lighter, brown flecked with gold when caught by the light. He wore a red and white leather jacket over a simple black T-shirt, paired with blue jeans and matching red-and-white sneakers that hinted at his sporty, casual style.
He couldn't shake the feeling that something was... off. "Why was it so easy for me and my guy friends to get in?" James muttered to himself, voicing the question that had gnawed at him ever since he got his acceptance letter. As he glanced around, he noticed that his friends seemed unconcerned, all too eager to jump at the chance.
As James approached the main building with his friends, he couldn't help but glance around, feeling something stir in the back of his mind. "Dosn't anyone fins this strange?" he asked, though his friends were already too far ahead, chatting excitedly about meeting new classmates.
With a sigh, he adjusted his jacket and looked around the courtyard, taking in the unfamiliar campus. The large, gothic-style buildings loomed above him, their tall windows almost watching as he entered.
"Guess it's just me then..." he muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets. But the feeling wouldn't shake. It was almost as if the place itself was waiting.
James enters the place last, falling way behind his friends as he looks around the building, it still feels very off to him.
Suddenly he hears a sort of whoosh sounds behind him as he looks behind him he finds nothing but a single white feather on the ground.
He looks at it for a second but brushes it off thinking it might of been some kind of bird.
But as he turns back around suddenly standing in front of him is a beautiful female with blood red hair and her eyes reflect her hair, with her red lips making a soft smirk.
"JESUS! You scarred me!" James responds holding his chest for a second.
"Oh sorry about that... I didn't know I was so quiet. But anyways, I was wanting to get to know you." The girl said, seductive as she gives him a card then walking to another class room.
"Get to know me? Lady we just met." He says turning around and seeing she is gone.
"Wow. I don't think I'm that amazing to want to be known so quickly..." He talks to himself as he looks at the card, analyzing it it says in print
"Hello, I don't have time right now to talk. How about after school we meet up at the park outside. Midnight sharp. Love Rias." With a red lipstick kiss next to it.
"Huh...Alright then. Guess I might as well get to know her...But that is terrible for my sleep." He says knowing the commitment he is going to need walking to a class.
While the subject it being talked about, really it all sounds like a blur to James for he is doing a lot of monoluging.
"Why am I even at this school? I'm home-schooled and have a part time job... I'm only lucky I have this week off and told my family that I'm going to hang out with my friends. But this is not what I consider hanging out...Yes they are my coworkers and I enjoy being around them...but maybe we just got to caught up in this idea... Or I'm just overthinking things." James thinks to himself.
Later on it feels like class goes by like a flash as he exits the class.
As he is walking though the building he notices some dorm rooms.
"Dorms? In a high school? When me and my friends got in for basically free...What the hell is this girl only school?" James continues to talk to himself, due to him loosing track of his friends.
He heads outside and wonders around the city trying to find something to do, eventually getting to a convenient store getting some packaged sushi and a cherry soda to at least have something to do, other then that not a lot else in this city.
He sits on a park bench eating his sushi and drinking soda, he may be lonely but seems somewhat content being alone with his food.
"Maybe this isn't so bad," he thought, sipping the last of his cherry soda. "Being alone has its perks. No dumb jokes, no awkward conversations…"
But as he closed his eyes, intending to rest for just a moment, a faint noise reached his ears—a rustling sound, like leaves being blown in the wind. His eyes snapped open, scanning the park, but everything seemed normal. The trees swayed gently, and the distant hum of the city buzzed in the background.
Then he felt it—a presence, faint but undeniable. It was like someone was watching him. He turned his head, his eyes landing on a man standing a few feet away, dressed in a plain gray coat and jeans. The man's hair was a stark white, his face calm yet intense. He seemed ordinary enough, but there was something… different about him.
"Nice day for some quiet, isn't it?" the man said, his voice deep and steady.
James blinked. "Uh, yeah, I guess," he replied, suddenly feeling self-conscious. Who just talks to random people in a park?
The man nodded, his gaze lingering on James for a moment before turning to the sky. "Enjoy the peace while you can," he said, almost to himself. "Things tend to get... complicated when you least expect it."
James frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"
The man didn't answer. Instead, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the trees as if he'd never been there. James stared after him, his unease growing.
Weird. He shook his head, standing up and tossing his trash into a nearby bin. Maybe I'm just tired. That's all this is. Just a weird day.
The day suddenly starts to seem to get darker with the wind being colder and day having more shadows.
As he made his way back toward the city streets, the feeling of being watched didn't leave him. In fact, it grew stronger, almost suffocating. He glanced over his shoulder but saw no one.
That's when he noticed the shadow—long and unnatural, stretching from an alley up ahead. It didn't match the figure casting it, which appeared to shift and ripple like smoke. James stopped in his tracks, his heart pounding.
"Yea... nope," he muttered, turning to walk the other way. But before he could take more than a few steps, the alley seemed to come alive with movement. A pair of glowing red eyes blinked open, and a low, guttural growl echoed in the still air.
"What the fuck?" James asks very freaked out.
Then suddenly coming from the shadows seems to be to be another stunning lady, named Raynare.
"Hey cutie.." She says before quickly throws what seems to be a spear at break neck speeds to catch the boy off guard as he covers his eyes ready for impact.
It speeds towards him ready to pierce right though him, however suddenly with a huge gust of wind to spear makes a huge clang noise and deflects off something.
James opens his eyes and finds the man in the grey coat from earlier holding a white and gold triangular shield with a huge gold cross on the center of it.
"What the hell?" James asks barley able to think.
The man glanced over his shoulder, his calm demeanor unshaken. "Poor choice of words, I'd say."
As he spoke, a radiant golden light engulfed him, swirling like a living force. James stumbled back, shielding his eyes as the light expanded outward in a dazzling display.
When the brilliance dimmed, the man stood transformed.
White and gold armor adorned his body, every plate engraved with intricate patterns of holy symbols. A large golden cross was emblazoned on his chest, mirrored on his forearms and ankles. His helmet, sleek and imposing, bore another cross at its center, glowing faintly with divine energy. The patches of black leather under the armor provided both flexibility and contrast, enhancing the ethereal look.
Behind him, two magnificent wings unfurled—long, pristine feathers of white catching the faint light of the streetlamps. The sheer force of his presence pushed the air in waves, exuding authority and power.
Raynare hissed, her expression darkening. "A pawn of Him, meddling in affairs beyond your understanding?" She summoned another spear, this one larger and crackling with more energy than the last. "I'll crush you like the others!"
The armored man didn't flinch. Instead, he raised his shield, his wings flaring out as a warm glow emanated from his body. "James," he said firmly without turning, "get behind me. Now."
James, still stunned, could barely move. His legs felt like jelly, his thoughts a jumbled mess of confusion and disbelief. "W-What is going on?! Who are you?!"
The man finally looked back at him, his piercing blue eyes shining with a strange mix of determination and reassurance. "My name is Shomel. Right now, your survival is my priority."
Raynare snarled, throwing her spear with all her might. It screamed through the air, but Shomel was faster, his shield moving with precision to deflect the projectile. The spear shattered on impact, sending purple sparks scattering across the ground.
James stumbled back further, watching in awe and terror as the two beings squared off. What the hell have I gotten myself into?
Raynare's growl deepened as dark energy rippled around her, forming another spear in her hand. "You dare stand in my way? I'll make you regret it!"
Without hesitation, she launched herself forward, her spear trailing violet sparks in the air. Shomel met her charge with a swift motion, his shield raised to intercept the blow. The clash of her spear against the holy shield sent shockwaves rippling through the park, scattering leaves and debris.
"James, move!" Shomel barked, his voice sharp but steady.
James stumbled back, watching the scene with wide eyes. Every clash of weapon and shield sent sparks flying, illuminating the combatants in bursts of light and shadow.
Shomel pivoted, deflecting another strike from Raynare's spear. With his free hand, a golden light flared into existence, shaping itself into a broad, ornate sword. Its blade shimmered with radiant energy, its edges glowing faintly like the morning sun.
"Let's see how you fare against this, demon!" Shomel said, stepping forward to meet her.
Their weapons collided in a flurry of strikes, Raynare's spear moving with savage precision while Shomel's sword countered with disciplined efficiency. The clash of light and darkness painted the park in vivid contrasts, their movements too fast for James to follow.
Raynare snarled, her strikes growing wilder as her frustration mounted. "You think your holy tricks will stop me?!"
"They've stopped worse," Shomel retorted, his shield catching another spear thrust before he shoved her back with a burst of energy.
Raynare staggered but quickly regained her footing, hurling a sphere of dark energy at him. Shomel brought his sword down in a sweeping arc, slicing through the projectile, which dispersed into harmless motes of shadow.
"You've fallen so far, Raynare," Shomel said, his voice heavy with disappointment. "Once an angel, now a creature of darkness. You disgust me… fallen angel."
Raynare screamed in fury, throwing herself at him with renewed ferocity. Shomel held firm, his shield and sword braced against her relentless assault. As their weapons locked in a power struggle, the ground beneath them cracked from the force of their clash.
"You know nothing of my choices!" she spat, her violet eyes blazing with rage. "You serve blindly, while I—"
"You betrayed everything you were meant to stand for," Shomel interrupted, his voice cutting through her words. With a surge of golden light, he shoved her back, his shield glowing brighter and brighter.
"Enough!" he roared, raising his shield high. A beam of pure holy light erupted from it, bathing the area in blinding radiance. Raynare screamed as the light engulfed her, forcing her to retreat into the shadows.
When the light faded, she was gone, her presence lingering only as a faint echo in the air.
Shomel lowered his shield dissaping like nothing, his glowing sword dimming to a soft golden hue. He turned to James, who was still rooted in place, his mouth slightly open.
"She won't bother you for now," Shomel said, his tone calmer but still firm. "But this is far from over." Shomel said turning his armor back into normal clothes.
James blinked, his mind struggling to catch up. "What—what was that? Who are you? What was she?!"
Shomel regarded him for a moment before sighing. "You're involved now, whether you like it or not. I'll explain everything, but first…" He glanced at the sky, his expression unreadable. "We need to get somewhere safe."
"We...UHHHHH..." James says as he faints with the man holding him before he hits the ground.
"Don't worry young one...You will be safe." Shomel says as he takes the kid to a safe place.
