Steven quickly arrived at his apartment in civilian clothes, so as not to attract his father's suspicions. His suit had retracted, making him enter the complex where his penthouse was located with a small shopping bag in hand, wearing jeans, a white T-shirt and a pair of sneakers.
He took the elevator and after a few minutes finally arrived at the entrance to his penthouse and could see Felicia smiling, as an elderly man in his fifties with graying brown hair lifted a 5-year-old child with blue eyes and brown hair with a few platinum-blonde streaks who was laughing.
The older man was Steven's father, Jared Ackles.
Jared put his grandson down, who could see Steven enter the living room.
"Dad!" He said, running over to his father and grabbing his legs for a hug. "Did you see? Grandpa came."
"Yes, I can see that." Steven smiled, taking his son in his arms. "Hi, Daddy. So, what a nice breeze brings you."
"A fair wind it is." Steven's father smiled.
"You have my attention even more, Mr. Ackles." Felicia smiled, looking at her boyfriend's father. "If you're talking about fair wind, it must really be something."
He gave Felicia a brief hostile glance, before turning his attention back to his son.
"Actually, your girlfriend's right, son. I suppose you saw all the commotion in Hell's Kitchen earlier?"
"I've seen police cars headed there, but nothing more. Why?" Steven asked, playing innocent.
"Well, Wilson Fisk was arrested. And some of his businesses turned out to be shell companies to conceal his criminal activities. Some buildings are already being seized as we speak. I've arranged with Mayor Osborn to have priority on the purchase of a building when possible." Her father replied.
"But that's great." Steven smiled, happy that after all this time his father's project was finally close to becoming a reality. "But I get the feeling you're not telling me everything."
"We can't hide anything from you." And when it's possible to buy them, that leaves the way clear for Ackles Enterprise to set up shop in New York. One of my agents is looking for the perfect building to house our company. But I couldn't stay in New York forever to run the business. So I'd like you to run the branch."
This revelation shocked Steven, who dropped his shopping bag and nearly dropped his son, but caught him just in time, the jolt making the little boy laugh as he saw the bewildered look on his father's face.
"Y-y-you kidding me?" Steven asked, almost convinced it was a joke.
"And no, son." His father told him, having to restrain himself from dying of laughter at the look on his son's face. "It's been so long that you've been a sort of liaison between our company and Oscorp, without asking for any kind of raise, I figured you'd earned it after six years without asking for a single raise while doing an exemplary job."
"Well, I... thank you." Steven said, putting his son down before taking his father in his arms.
"You're welcome, son." Smiled his father as he broke the embrace. "Of course, this position will only take effect once the formalities have been completed. In the meantime, you'll remain a liaison between our two companies. This will give you time to adapt to your new position and prepare for your move."
"My move?" Steven asked, perplexed.
"Of course. You can't live in a penthouse this... small." Jared told him as he looked around, delighted to see a scowl on Felicia's face, given that before they moved in together and split the bills, it had been Felicia's penthouse. "I bought the penthouse at the top of a building on East River. I'm going to make it my residence until everything is finalized. And after that, to celebrate your promotion, I'd like to transfer it to your name and make it your home."
This news came as a surprise to the couple, while their son had no idea what they were talking about.
"It must be a lot to take in. I'll leave you to think about the preparations. If you have any problems, just give me a call." Jared said before affectionately ruffling his grandson's hair.
He hugged his son, glanced at Felicia and left the Penthouse.
Felicia and Steven sighed a few seconds after Jared's departure.
"Your father is always so pleasant. Felicia said, picking up the shopping bag from the floor to put away what was inside.
"Tell me about it. I still don't understand why he's so passive-aggressive with you. Then again, he's been a little calmer since Walter was born." He said, looking at his son who was playing without paying attention to what was going on around him. "Do you think it's a good idea to accept his offer to move?"
His question made his companion sigh.
"I don't know. We'll have to see what it looks like first. If not, I'll keep paying for the Penthouse, so we can use it to hide money for future larcenies." Felicia offered as Steven poured himself a glass of Coca-Cola.
"Don't we have a stash in the Freedom Tunnel? I remember it wasn't discovered because you gave your equipment to Spidey, to stop the police investigation." Steven asked.
"Yes, but with Fisk out of the way, large groups like the Maggia will surely try to fill the void he leaves behind. They'll probably want the services of experienced thieves. And who better than me to double up. I might even be able to get a little help from him." Felicia explained.
"Not a bad idea. But..." Said Steven, realizing a detail that could ruin his plan, and that he'd brought up earlier. "But you don't have your equipment anymore? What, did you make yourself a new one in secret?"
This made Felicia laugh before she gave him the seductive, mystery-filled smile she's always known for.
"Who says I don't already have a plan to get the one the police are keeping?"
"Ooooh... Did you hatch your little plan between my departure to rob Fisk and my father's arrival?"
Felicia nodded and poured herself a glass of orange juice.
"I told myself that if I wanted to get back into service without the hassle of starting from scratch, I also needed to make a mark to attract the Maggia's attention so that they would hire me." She said before taking a sip. "And what better way than to rob the police."
"Ambitious. I suppose you'll start planning during the day." Asked the man with the spider power, smiling at his companion.
"Yes, so you don't mind taking care of Walter on your own for the rest of the day and maybe the night?" Felicia asked.
"Not at all, you had to look after him until I got home. And I'm going to reward you well for putting up with my father's comments." Steven joked.
"You're a sweetheart." Felicia smiled before pecking his lips and going to see their son. "Walt, Mom's going to have to leave for the rest of the day, I'll be home very late, so be good to Dad, okay?"
"Okay, Mom." Walter smiled.
Felicia kissed her son's forehead before leaving and Steven sat down next to his son on the sofa.
"Dad, can we eat..." Walter began. Walter began to ask.
"And no Mcdonald's!" Felicia said in the distance.
"Oh..." Walter sighed, lowering his head.
"Don't worry, champ." Steven whispered to his son. "We'll eat..."
"And no Quick or Burger King either!"
And the father lowered his head too.
Then, a few minutes after Felicia's departure, Steven thought about the news his father had given him, and wanted to talk about it with someone.
"Hey Walt, we're getting ready to go see a friend."
A few minutes later, a car pulled up in front of the F.E.A.S.T. center in Chinatown, and Steven and Walter got out.
Steven took his son's hand and went inside. It was an old gymnasium that had been refurbished as a center for the homeless.
Steven guided Walter, talking to various homeless people to find the manager. They arrived in the center's kitchen to find the staff offering a cake to an elderly woman with red hair, and a man of Steven's age chatting with Martin Li.
The latter had to leave after a while, and his gaze met Steven's, both men feeling a sensation similar to that of their spider sense.
Martin noticed Steven and went over to him.
"Hello, Steven." He said, approaching him. "It's been a long time."
"Yes, it has." Steven smiled as he shook hands with the F.E.A.S.T. founder, whom he considered a friend, even if they weren't in touch much. "I've just had some excellent news, and I wanted to tell you about it."
"Well, you've piqued my curiosity." Martin smiled before noticing the child holding Steven's hand and kneeling in front of him. "You've brought little Walter. You're all grown up."
The child tightened his grip on his father's hand and hid a little behind him.
"You don't have to be afraid, Walt. He's a friend." Reassured his father. "This is Martin Li. He's the one who founded this place."
"Do you help everyone here?" Walter asked.
"Yes. Your father often helped here years ago. By giving us money or bringing a few things to help." Martin explained. "You even came with him once. But you were still a baby."
"Really?" asked the child.
"Yes, you should have seen what he was like." Martin smiled, rising to his feet. "He helped out on a few things and hardly ever took his eyes off you. I remember he was always worried about something happening to you. It was pretty funny."
Walter looked at his father, who looked away, embarrassed, which made him laugh.
"So, Steven. What's the good news?" Martin asked, bringing the conversation back to the main topic.
Steven told him what his father had planned.
"That's great news. Martin smiled, proud of his friend.
"Yeah, and it means I'll have more to do with Oscorp for joint projects between that company and my father's. It's not death, but I still get the impression that Norman has this false air of gentility. That he's hiding something fishy, and that I should be wary." Says Steven.
"He has that effect on a lot of people." Martin chuckled before looking at his watch. "Oh, excuse me. I wish we could keep talking, but I've got an important appointment in a little while."
"No problem." Steven smiled before remembering the spider-sense sensation he'd felt earlier. "Oh by the way, who were you chatting with earlier? I feel like I've seen him somewhere before."
"Peter? He's May's nephew, he often comes here to help out when he has time. You might have bumped into him when you were here." Li explained.
"It's possible. I won't take up any more of your time. Good day, Martin."
"Good day to you too, Steven. Good-bye, Walter." Said Martin, waving to Walter as he walked away.
"Good-bye, Mr. Li!"
Then Walter and Steven returned to the car and Steven had an idea.
"Are we agreed Walter, your mother said no to Mcdonald's, Quick, and Burger King?"
"Yes, why?" Asked the child.
"But, she didn't say anything about the K..."
Then the ringtone indicating he'd received a message sounded from Steven's phone. He picked it up and saw that there was a message from Felicia saying, "And no KFC, either".
"But how does she do it?!" Said Steven, panicking as he looked around the car to see if Felicia had put a microphone in it, then let it go." Well... if that's a no to fast food, then we're going to make homemade burgers?"
"We'll be able to eat Krabby Patty, like in SpongeBob SquarePants?" Walter asked.
"Sure, why not. You just have to go to the grocery store and buy what you need. If you want, we can eat it in front of SpongeBob SquarePants." Steven offered, happy to be able to show his son the movie.
"Actually, Grandpa brought me the DVD of The Amazing Ricochet when he came over this morning. Can we watch that?"
"Of course we can. I must admit, I'm curious to see how this film turns out." Says Steven as he starts the car.
Later that night, Walter was asleep in his own bed. He'd fallen asleep watching the movie, and Steven had put him to bed.
Steven finished putting away everything he'd taken out to make the Krabby Patty, and stood in front of his laptop, plugging in the USB driver containing the data he'd stolen from Fisk and inspecting it.
He was looking for any information he might have had about this "knight" he'd mentioned before ending up in prison.
After half an hour, he could find nothing.
He was about to give up, and go to bed to resume his research later the next day, when he came across an exchange of messages between Fisk and the leader of one of his groups in charge of managing part of the city's drug trade.
The leader of the group seemed to be sending messages to his boss in a panic, telling him about a man who had killed the whole group he was in charge of, that he had managed to escape while the man was in charge of where most of his henchmen were. All this was accompanied by a photo he had managed to take in the panic.
The photo was a little blurry, no doubt due to the phone owner's movements in the panic. But it showed a man in high-tech military armor shooting men with semi-automatic pistols.
He wore a helmet with a glass plate at the front protecting a tactical visor shining with blue light on the outside. The mask had upward-pointing spikes reminiscent of bat ears, which Steven suspected would be used to conceal listening and communication devices.
But the date on which the messages were exchanged and the screenshot taken surprised him.
" It happened on the day Walter was born... Is there a connection?"
He wondered if there was a connection, but quickly dismissed the idea, thinking it was just a tired mind imagining it.
He then turned off his computer, put the USB key away and went to bed.
