TITLE

Kakashi woke up with one thought. "I must convince sensei to allow me to be one of his guards." Minato had chosen a small group of four ANBU ninja to guard him and his wife at the weakest moment for a jinchuriki, child birth. The number of guards was limited to three to keep the information about the birth as tight as possible. However, Kakashi had heard about Kushina's pregnancy weeks prior.

Minato heard two quick knocks at the door to the hokage's office. "Busy. Come back later," He shouted dismissively, without even looking up from his desk. "Sensei. I need to talk to you." Came back the reply from the other side of the door. "Come in. I thought you had a mission today Kakashi." The fourth hokage responded with a slight smile, trying to hide his anxiety.

"It was a simple mission for which I was assigned more time than necessary. I returned yesterday," Kakashi stated blankly.

Minato chuckled. "I see. Congratulations on your recent promotion to ANBU captain. It is definitely a role that fits you, and I'm sure your teammates would be proud."

"I only have you to thank, sensei. You trained me from the beginning and gave me the opportunity to promote so early. Now, I'm here because I have a request." Minato sighed at this. He had enough to get done that day, and had no free time to be talking about favors. "I know about Kushina's pregnancy, and I know about the plans for the birth. Please assign me to the squad tasked with the protection of you and your family."

Minato was stunned. He wasn't sure what he expected to be asked for, but that certainly was not it. With a real smile and a sigh he started, "Here I was drawing out plans not knowing what to do with only three guard ninja. I have the third hokage on standby, but nobody else knows. It is most definitely reassuring to have your help. I trust you very much Kakashi. I will be meeting with the other hokage guards at the 6th training grounds on the south edge of the village in four hours. Come in full ANBU attire."

"Yes sensei. Thank you sensei." Kakashi answered quickly and then immediately left to prepare his ninja tools.

Minato breathed a heavy sigh of relief. He had not wanted to worry his former student with the assignment, and also didn't want to spread the information of the birth any more than necessary. A weight was lifted from his shoulders as he returned to the scroll on his desk and continued drawing up guard formations.

The sun was starting to set over the stone faces of the four hokage. "Kakashi, these are the ANBU that you will be working with; Rainin, Genon, and Iwado." Minato informed him as soon as everybody had arrived. He pointed at a map on the ground with a stick. "This cave just outside the village to the west has been selected for the birth. It is in a heavily wooded area. Rainin, you and Kakashi will be stationed together in this tree closest to the mouth of the cave. Genon, you will be in a tree fifteen paces to the west. Iwado, you will do the same fifteen paces to the east. In the event of an emergency, Genon and Iwado will immediately engage whatever evemy may appear. Rainin, you will first move forward, and then send a red flare into the mouth of the cave. Kakashi, you will stay where you are, and wait for the opportunity to strike. It is always better to have the advantage of surprise, no matter the enemy."

"Yes sir." The four masked ninja responded in unison. Minato smiled. "I'm praying that this amount of protection is overkill. I will see you all at the cave in one hour. Go eat and fuel your bodies. There is a good chance that you all will have to wait in those positions until tomorrow morning. It all depends on how the birth goes."

With that, the four black ops ninja disappeared, leaving Minato with only his thoughts. "We aren't at war anymore. This is definitely overkill. Everything is going to go smoothly." He muttered to himself, trying to stay positive.

"Thanks for coming you guys. It means a lot." Minato spoke softly into the trees as he entered the mouth of an unassuming cave. He spent a few minutes setting seals at the entrance before walking over to where Kushina was laying on a bed being attended to by two medical ninja. "How is she doing?" He stuttered. "I'm not unconscious dear. I can speak for myself." Kushina smiled softly. Hearing his wife's voice helped to calm Minato's nerves. He sat down in a bedside chair. "I wish Jiraiya sensei was here. I really wanted him to be around for this, as we are naming him after sensei's character in his book. He had an important mission in the hidden rain that couldn't be delegated, but I promise I have some of the best of the ANBU outside looking out for you and the child."

"I trust you dear. My husband is the hokage, the leader of the strongest of the hidden villages. You won't let me down." Minato knew Kushina was attempting to cheer him up, but it felt like more pressure the more she said. Minato gave an affirmative nod at her words and buried himself in a book about sealing jutsu.

He didn't make it but a couple pages into the book before he was unable to focus because of Kushina's grunts and screams. All he could do was grab her hand and squeeze it tightly to make sure she was aware of his presence.

Just as soon as the medical ninja had delivered the child, a red flare came zooming into the cavern. Minato froze. It was happening. They were under attack. Composing himself, he apologized and told his wife that he loved her before activating the flying raijin jutsu and appearing next to his student, high above the mouth of the cave. He didn't even have to say anything before Kakashi gave him the run-down.

"One combatant. The others are dead. He wears a mask and wields some sort of phasing jutsu. It is a kekei genkai I've never seen before." Springing into action, Minato thanked Kakashi and engages the enemy almost instantly with one of his signature kunai. "Who are you and why do you want the kyubi?" Minato roared. Kakashi had never seen his sensei so angry.

Rather than a verbal response, the masked man leaped straight through Minato, pulling a chain behind him, obviously intended to wrap around his opponent and cripple him. However, Minato was known for learning quickly. He realized that the masked man's hands had to be tangible to be holding the chain, and stabbed one with a kunai, almost immediately teleporting to out of the trap. He stood face to face with the mask man, who was shorter than he looked. He was about Kakashi's height. In the split second that Minato was pondering these thoughts, he heard a shout of "Chidori!" from above him. Minato peered into the one hole in the mask. Seeing the signature Uchiha three tomoi sharingan staring back at him made Minato's eyes go wide. "Kakashi don't!" He yelled. "We have to capture this man alive!"

Kakashi, not one to be shown up in speed, cancelled his jutsu swiftly, and came down with a lightning senbon jutsu perfectly aimed for the man's neck. This would have temporarily paralyzed the masked ninja, if he hadn't utilized his phasing ability again. Suddenly Kakashi was wrapped up in the chains, but Minato was faster than the shorter man. He slammed his palm into the chains, marking them with the flying raijin jutsu, and immediately teleported them around the masked man, utilizing the kunai still stuck in his hand to do so. Minato held the ends of the chains tight, not letting the man escape.

"Don't resist. We will not kill you, Uchiha. I have many questions that I need answered." Minato spat. The man obviously had no intentions of follow the instruction, as he began to completely dematerialize. All of his mass was seemingly shifting through space and entering into his eye. "No you don't!" Yelled Minato as he shoved his arm through the man's eye, and grabbed onto whatever he felt on the other side.

Just like that, the two were gone, leaving Kakashi standing in the clearing helplessly. He ran into the cave to make sure that Kushina was alright, before going back outside to the clearing. "Think Kakashi. Think! How can I help sensei? I have no idea where they are right now, this could be a space time jutsu, or some sort of dimensional jutsu, or something similar to the flying raijin." Deciding that it would be best to assume that the two would return to the exact same spot, Kakashi summoned Pakkun, filled him in on everything that had happened, and told the ninja hound to report to the third hokage. He then put his hands together to form the familiar hand signs for the rasengan that his sensei had taught him. This was a jutsu less lethal than the Chidori, which would be able to knock an opponent unconscious without severely crippling them.

Kakashi's internal thoughts were interrupted by the masked man appearing right in front of him, with one of Minato's kunai in his back. Kakashi took this opportunity to send his rasengan straight into the dazed man's left temple. The battle was over. The masked man would be unconscious for days, but where was Minato? Was he injured? Why else would he not have returned yet? Kakashi was not one to panic, but he had sworn to never let a friend die again, so the situation was quite unpleasant to him.

"Calm yourself. You're an ANBU captain." He muttered to himself as he retrieved a sealing scroll from his ninja tool pouch and sealed the unconscious man away. Kakashi picked up the scroll and ran back inside the cave to update the medical ninja. "The threat is gone, but sen- I mean Yondaime Hokage is missing. I have the body of the man who attacked us. I am taking him back to the village for questioning."

Without staying to hear the response, Kakashi rushed outside and went east toward the village, where he knew the third hokage was. The young ANBU captain showing up at Hiruzen's door at a late hour with a sealing scroll was not what the third hokage was hoping to see. Kakashi filled him in on all that had happened, and handed him the scroll. Hiruzen undid the seal right there on his front door steps, and immediately tried removing the man's mask. "This is a powerful sealing jutsu. There's only one person in the village who can undo this, and she has to be a little bit occupied at the moment."

Kakashi just stood there helplessly. "What can I do to help, Sandaime San?" He splurted out helplessly. Hiruzen put his hand to his chin. "Your Canines are faster than my Enma. Send one of them to fetch Fugaku Uchiha. Tell him it is an emergency regarding the Uchiha and the Hokage." Hiruzen made sure that the message was phrased in a way that would summon the Uchiha clan leader as fast as possible. Fugaku and Minato had been rivals for years, but they respected each other's determination and power. Fugaku would hurry.

No more than five minutes after Kakashi had dispatched his fastest hound, Fugaku jumped down from a nearby roof in front of the two shinobi. "Who is this?" He asked without pause. Hiruzen answered. "This man attempted to capture the kyubi and kill the hokage. Minato called him 'Uchiha' during their skirmish, however, he used an unknown jutsu to incapacitate Minato, and we don't know where he is."

Fugaku gave the prior hokage a nod and bent down to start examining the man, looking for any identifying signs. "The Uchiha have not given rise to a rogue ninja since Uchiha Madara. If what Minato San said is true, this man must have been marked dead. We keep our records meticulously well."

"The only Uchiha that died young enough to now be that size is Uchiha Obito, but you saw him die with your own eyes, right Kakashi?" Hiruzen asked softly. Kakashi's heart skipped a beat at the idea that Obito could be alive, but he immediately put that flame out. This was no time to develop emotions. "Yes sir. My teammate Uchiha Obito was crushed by a boulder during the third great war." He stated flatly, while rubbing the part of his mask that covered the sharingan he received from his teammate.

"I can confirm that this boy is an Uchiha. His sandals were hand made by my mother. However, this does not narrow down the possibilities, as my mother has handmade almost all of the footwear worn by our clan. We must wake him and question him immediately." Fugaku stood up, facing Hiruzen and Kakashi.

Kakashi spoke up. "He uses some sort of teleportation jutsu that will allow him to easily escape if we wake him up. He can perform it without any words or a sign." Fugaku's face warped in realization. "He possesses the mangekyo sharingan. This is the only way a ninja can perform a jutsu with only thoughts or sight."

"Is there any way to nullify it? Minato sensei could be injured. We need to question him as soon as possible." Kakashi spoke louder, his worry becoming more apparent in his voice. "There is one person in my clan who may have the ability to disable his sharingan altogether, for at least a week. I will summon him immediately. Hiruzen, may we come in? This is a much too public place to be doing this." Fugaku stated, taking over control of the situation. Hiruzen obliged and brought the masked body into his front room, closing the door behind him.

Shisui showed up even faster than Fugaku, even though Fugaku had not done anything apparent to summon him. "Fugaku San, what can I do to help?"

"Will your kotoamatsukami work to disable a sharingan?"

Shisui looked confused. "I've never tried it before. Why?" Fugaku looked annoyed, but told his relative the situation. "I will try my very best." The young prodigy stated.

A/N: This is my first story ever, so if anyone reads this, please be as critical as possible. I have a rough idea of the next few chapters, but nothing far into the future… No plans for pairings or who'll die and who'll live… I appreciate any feedback. Thanks for reading!
