Synopsis
In the rural village of Geumje in 1992, four women begin door-to-door sales of adult products. They have different reasons for getting involved in the risqué business venture of Fantasy Lingerie and other adult products. As they gain financial independence they develop friendships and bonds that holds them together as they meet the challenges of their personal lives and the embedded resistance of their new found work.
Character Analysis
Han Jeong-Suk is a housewife. She was once the 1st runner-up in a local beauty contest and she married the man who was her first love… Kwon Seong Soo who remains stuck in the grandeur of his youth. Her life is modest and ordinary, but she suffers from financial difficulties Due to her husbands inability to keep a job.. She is unable to afford a new bag for her only son…..Kwon Min Ho and she worries about making her monthly rent. This provides a wake up call for her along with the discovery that her husband is cheating with her best friend ….Seong Mi Hwa. She soon jumps into door-to-door sales of imported adult products and discovers that she has a talent for marketing and sales along with being a leader.
Oh Geum-Hui the oldest of the group grew up in a wealthy family and graduated from a prestigious women's university. However due to her youthful indiscretions She got married through an arranged marriage made by her family. She moved to Geumje, which is her husband's hometown. Here, she lives a boring life. To help Han Jeong-Suk, who once worked as her housekeeper, she begins to work door-to-door sales of imported adult products. This leads her to have an unexpected self-reflection as her dark secret of her youth returns to face the harsh reality of her life.
Seo Young-Bok is a mother of 4 children. Her relationship with her husband is great and they look like a happy family, but her family suffers from poverty in that her husband is an ex convict unable to secure a job forcing Young Bok to become the family's bread winner. The six family members sleep together in a single room. In order to provide a separate room for her 4 children, Seo Young-Bok begins to work door-to-door sales of imported adult products and soon finds that she can earn more money than all the menial jobs combined. Desperation soon strikes the family as she again becomes pregnant and her husbands foolish attempt at earning money lands him in jail.
Lee Ju-Ri is beautiful free spirit but becomes abandoned when her boyfriend discovers that she is pregnant. As a single mother, who raises her son running a beauty parlor. She often marvels that her son Jang Dong U has the intellect and wisdom that she lacks at such a young age. She begins to do door-to-door sales of imported adult products, believing it would be a fun thing to do in her boring life. She grows as a person through her work and lifts the spirits of the other 3 women when they encounter frustrating situations and is unafraid of picking herself back up when things get tuff.
The main male lead of the series is Kim Do-Hyeon the handsome and very reclusive police officer that comes into town hoping to discover his past. Kim Do Hyeon who grew up in a wealthy family in South Korea and gradated from an Ivy League school in the United States. After he returned to South Korea, he began to work as a police officer and was quickly promoted at the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul. He then moved to Geumje and began to work at the Geumje Police Station. He doesn't seem to have a connection with the area, but the secret of his birth and his abandonment forces him to delve into all of the towns peoples past trying to find a link to him in who were his real parents. The more he and Han Jeong Suk meet his closed off barriers begin to fall and she allows herself to begin to warm up to him after her divorce and help him unravel his past.
Virtuous Business as a series was very compelling in showing the resolve that women in the 1990's South Korea were held down by the societal structures that have been embedded in their culture. Women were subjugated by men and if they tried to break free they would face severe backlash from family, friends and neighbors. The four women that bonded together showed that they could empower themselves if they stuck to their resolve to live their life the way they wanted to live it.
Where the screen writers failed in making this series a very informative on women empowerment issues they brushed aside the subplots they opened but never explained. The 4 year time time left more questions unanswered than explained.

Episode 13
As was the case with episode 12 recapping the events that forced Oh Geum Hui to give up on her baby that she loved dearly…. Episode 13 needs to return back to the four years previously. Kim Do Hyeon now stationed at the GangNam police precinct and working late ...calls Jeong Suk but Min Ho answers.
