summary: Fiyeros perspective of Wicked Part One and his relationship with Galinda and Elphaba
He liked Galinda- or Glinda now—he really did. That is what Fiyero told himself at midnight as he could not sleep. He lay in bed thinking, that's right, he thinks now, about his time at Shiz and the two woman he's met here. She was popular and fun to be with, but that was it. She was no different from those he spent time with at other schools. He was there to have fun, and that was it. His parents wanted him to settle down and place some roots, and they hoped college would tame him, but he knew better.
That was until he met her.
She was like no one he had met before, with her emerald green skin glowing in the forest and her glasses framing her face beautifully. He's a simple man; he sees someone beautiful, flirts with them, and has no choice but to lay on the charm, but she is different. She doesn't respond with the usual flustterdness he is used to; in fact, she does the exact opposite and brushes him off. It takes him off guard, but he quickly recovers before she notices. He takes it as a challenge, deciding right then that he would discover what makes her tick. They have some banter before she walks away before he can get her name. He tries not to let it bother him; it doesn't matter, and according to her uniform, they will be going to the same school tomorrow.
She's on his mind all night, and he comes up with different plans to get her attention. The following day, he steps onto campus and gets fawned over like he's used to. People's eyes never left him as he strutted across campus, classmates melting at his voice, and then he met Galinda.
They flirted so easily; it's as if they meshed together perfectly. She could keep up with him and had something to say back to him. She gave him a campus tour, always batting her eyes or tossing her hair, and he played along. When they made it to the library, that's when he saw the green girl again. She was just as beautiful in the building's natural light, her nose buried in a book. He waved to her, and she rolled her eyes, ignoring him.
When it becomes clear that no one in this school knows how to have a good time, he takes them under his wing and teaches them his life philosophy, "Dancing through life." After all, what is the point of stressing over every little thing when you can live carefree? Galinda is all in, dancing and having fun. It's what is expected; it's supposed to be perfect.
They plan to sneak into the Oz dust that night. Before he leaves with Galinda on his arm, he sees the girl Galinda convinced Boq to ask out instead of rolling to the green girl and takes note of that, his eyes lingering. That night, he places a flower from a nearby bush in Galindas's hair. She smiles at him and looks at him, full of love and tenderness. He is torn out of the moment when he hears giggling and uses it as an excuse to look away. He sees Boq and his date speeding to the boat, and he bites back, disappointed that he doesn't see her friend. Nonetheless, the night is still young, and it's not like him to be hung up on some girl, especially when the boat is full of people who swoon at his smile.
The night is a blast; there is dancing, singing, drinking, and the works. For a moment, he thinks they're busted when Madame Morrible comes up to them, but is pleasantly surprised when she gives Galinda a training wand that Elphaba insists on her joining and that shell he is joining them at the party. That's when he was finally able to put a name to the face and saw her, in all her glory, walking down the stairs and stopping in the middle of the room. Everyone laughs at her and her questionable fashion choice, but she pays them no mind, opting to take her hat off her head and do her own quirky dance. Watching it was painful, but she didn't back down, not caring what anyone thought.
"Of course she does; she just pretends not to," Galinda told him in a rare show of vulnerability. Letting go of his arm, she steps into the circle and joins Elphaba in her dance. Her little Clique tried to stop her, but she stood strong, and the two girls danced as if they were the only two people in the world. Even then, he couldn't take his eyes off of Elphaba. He knows it's wrong; he came to this dance with Galinda, but something about her was so mesmerizing, and he realized how similar they really are. Acting like they don't care, putting on a facade, hiding a deep vulnerability.
He didn't get to ask her for a dace, for Galinda whisked her away to do whatever girls do.
The next day, he saw her outside Dr. Dillamond's classroom, and she had clearly been...Galindafied. Her hair was down, with the front strands pulled back in a low half ponytail, each strand still in beautiful braids, but now they slowly became undone at the bottom and into beautiful curls. She was no longer wearing her glasses, and he could barely see some freckles on her face, her eyes piercing his soul. She probably had no idea what effect she had on him. It was dangerous, but oh, how he loved a good thrill. The five of them sat down, having playful banter with each other.
Then everything goes wrong. Dr. Dillamond is inhumanly dragged out of class before the new history professor walks in with a caged Lion cub. He hated how that horrid man treated the poor thing; it reminded him of how, when he was a kid, others would pick on his horse, Jack, for being too sassy. With her strong sense of justice, Elphaba demanded we do something, which caught him off guard, though he didn't know why. She has always said what is on her mind and speaks up for what she thinks is right.
"What do you mean we?" he asks, putting on his mask. He feels bad, sure, but what can they really do? He feels shame when she looks at him in disbelief and disappointment. They jump when the new professor hits the cage sharply with the stick, and Elphaba slams the poppies down in anger. What happened next was unexplainable; everyone in the class started falling asleep, that is, everyone but him and Elphahba. He doesn't know why but doesn't have time to think about it. Instead, opting to get the lion out of the cage.
"Well, are you coming?" he asks her, holding the small cat to his chest. She smiles at him, and he feels his heart flutter a little. The two of them run out of class to some basics on the edge of campus. Eventually, he places the cub into the basket on the back of Elphaba's bike, fingers briefly touching. Once secure, they hopped on a bike and rode off into the forest. She's defiant at first, and they fall into familiar banter. It's a lot more intimate now that it's just the two of them, and he gets a much better look at her. Her freckles are much clearer, and he finds his eyes tracing the shape they make. Her eyes never left him, and he could see the definite and strength, but there was a vulnerability hidden behind them. Her hand comes to cup his cheek where he is bleeding, and he can't tear his gaze from her, her fingers creasing his temple. She tells him something, but he's too caught up in her beauty to hear.
"Yeah. Or maybe he scratched me or something," He says dumbly. He could feel himself leaning into her touch and had to snap himself out of it. Grabbing the cub, he makes a run for it and immediately regrets it when he hears her calling his name. Once he takes the cub to safety, he decides to look for Elphaba, spending the rest of the day and night searching for her. He looks all around campus, the forest, and even the stables but can't find her. Eventually, he finds himself at the Quade, still no Elphana in sight. Galinda came running to him, followed by Boq and Nessa, and again, he was disappointed when her sister was nowhere in sight.
"Fiyero Darling, where have you been!? We were all so worried."
"Yeah, everything happened so fast; I just needed to get some air." he is still looking around, "Have any of you seen Elphaba?"
"Not since history class," Nessa tells him, wheeling herself forward, "I'm worried about her; she and Dr. Dillamond were very close."
"I'm sure we'll find her, Nessa," Boq assures her.
"How about we go back to the doms? If Elphie isn't back by curfew, I will go to Madame Morrible." Galinda suggests.
He sees her the next day when everyone sees her off at the train station. He's angry and doesn't know what to say. He wants to tell her that he's been thinking about her since the moment they shared and apologize for running off as a fool. But when He sees Galinda there, he knows he can't break her heart like that; no matter how he feels about her, he realizes she really is in love. Not to mention, Elphaba is her best friend now, and she and Nessa are quickly replacing Shenshen and Pfanne. But he was already a coward once and needed a way to tell Elphaba what was on his mind. It's not his smoothest moment, but luckily, Galinda assumes they're talking about their former history professor and takes a moment to make a grand gesture. He and Elphaba share a look at their friend's antics; knowing how silly it is, her heart is in the right place. With Glinda's- well, Glinda now- attention on the crown of students, he takes their last few moments to try to tell her how he feels. Taking the Poppy off his jacket, he hands it to her, eyes meeting and fingers touching, and he knows that she understands.
He is happy when Glinda goes with Elphaba to the Emerald City; it gives him time to think, which he has been doing a lot lately. It's lonely on campus, just the three of them, and things are clearly tense between Nessa and Boq, which he desperately does not want to get in the middle of; the whole friend group doesn't need relationship problems. It's late, and they are in the library, knowing Glinda and Elphaba must have made it to the City by now.
"So...what do you think the girls are up to now?" he asks, hoping to break the tension.
"Nowing Fabala is trying to drag Ga-Glinda to every library," Nessa says
"And Glinda is going to drag her to every salon," Boq adds, and Nessa gives him the biggest side-eye. Boq seems to want to tell her something but opts to continue reading. Boq ends up leaving, and Fiyero and Nessa are left alone.
"Do you like my sister?" She asks point blankly, slamming her book closed. He just stares at her, shocked by her bluntness.
"I mean, she's a good friend, and I care about her the same way I care for all of you."
"No, you don't." It's not a question. He briefly wonders if being able to see and read someone perfectly, no matter how many shields you put up, is a trait among the Thropp girls. "Look, I know my sister. She may not want to talk about it, but something happened between you two after Dr. Dillamond was let go."
"I mean, we just helped free a cub," he told her, shrugging.
Nessa's gaze hardens as she stares at Fiyero, which baffles him. It was weird to see the usual sweet and kind Nessa act so intense and...almost mean. He clears his throat, growing more uncounterable under her scrutiny.
"Look, it isn't easy for my sister or me to make friends; this is all very new to us." She wheels herself closer to him. "Don't lead her on in something that will just break her heart. And if you do like her, don't do the same thing to Glinda. They are both good people who don't deserve that, okay?"
"O-okay."
Nessa gave him a lot to think about. He was in his dorm, private suite, with Boq keeping him company before curfew started. The two of them were flipping through magazines.
"Tell me, Boq, have you ever been in love?" Fiyero asks the ginger; he sputters. Maybe Boq wasn't the best person to talk to this about, considering he was in love with his sorta girlfriend, but he and Nessa seemed to have really hit it off, so maybe this conversation won't be too awkward.
"I mean, yeah, who hasn't."
"I think I might be in love." He'll let Boq think he's talking about Glinda; after all, the first person to really know how he feels should be the girl in question.
"O-oh, really."
"Yes, but I don't know how to tell her."
"Well, you should be honest...I mean, she's a really special girl."
"Yeah, she is. I think I'll tell her when she returns to the Emerald City."
"...that sounds like a good plan."
At night, when everything was quiet, and he was alone with his thoughts, Fiyero thought of the best course of action: to tell Elphana how he felt instead of hiding messages. And how to "break up" with Glinda. They weren't too serious, but he does care for her and doesn't want to hurt her. But at the same time, Nessa was right; it's not fair to just sting her along. It was an impossible task, one he knew he needed to do before Boq told the whole school he was going to confess his love to Glinda. But then the chaos started.
The alarms went off, and he jumped out of bed, running outside. Madame Morrible was broadcasting to all of Oz that Elphaba was an evil traitor to Oz and needed to be captured; he could believe his ears. They showed videos of her flying away on a broom, of all things; she truly is incredible. Before he knows what he's doing, he gets Jack from his private room by the stables and runs off to look for her. Last time he ran off, he wasn't able to tell her how he felt, and he'd be damned if he late her face what was coming alone. He hurriedly rode off without a second thought; nothing was more important. He didn't know when or how, but he would find Elphaba again.
Notes: I hope I did justice to these characters and relationships.
This is also an excuse to write more about their friendship, seeing as we got crumbs in the movie, and to be fair, there is still more we got in the musical.
