They say the beauty of life lies in its unpredictability — that's what sparks the desire for tomorrow. That feeling of butterflies in your stomach, knowing the unexpected can happen without any effort, might just be one of the best parts of existence. It's the anticipation that, in a single day, everything can change: a surprise, a new beginning, the unforeseen. But Teresa Lisbon didn't see it that way. Maybe it was because she was a Virgo, or because she'd taken on responsibilities far too early. Maybe her years at the CBI and later the FBI, dealing with criminals and unpredictable cases, had shaped her aversion to anything she couldn't foresee.
The truth was: if she couldn't be in control, she wasn't interested. And, of course, that was a contradiction when it came to Patrick Jane. After all, she'd never managed to keep the man under control. He was chaos in her life, the exception to her rule, the unexpected that, despite all her convictions, she couldn't avoid. And in the blink of an eye, there she was: hopelessly in love with her eccentric and exasperating colleague. Teresa had tried everything to deny what she felt, to reclaim control over her emotions, but perhaps the saying about love is true — it can't be controlled. The more she tried to pull away, the more inevitably she was drawn into the whirlwind that was the consultant. The man who embodied everything she used to stay away from and, at the same time, the only person capable of breaking down all her defenses. Patrick Jane was everything Teresa Lisbon never thought she wanted, but exactly what she needed.
For that reason, when he proposed, she didn't even have to think. With her heart racing and a smile, she couldn't hold back, she said "yes" without hesitation. Teresa knew she had to learn to embrace life's unpredictability, especially now. Still, on that sunny spring morning, sitting on the edge of the airstream bed, trying to steady her breathing to calm her nerves, the fear of the unknown scared her more than ever. Letting go of control was something she still struggled with, and this time, there was no escaping it. She had to face the reality contained in the small rectangular box in her hands.
It had all started two days earlier, on the eve of her wedding, when a spirited Van Pelt insisted that her friend needed a bachelorette party — even if it was just a quiet night with bad 70s movies playing on the TV, lots of popcorn, and flipping through fashion magazines. Teresa didn't see much point in it, but missing Grace made any plan a great excuse to spend time together. The night would have been perfect, if not for her younger friend's casual remark about Lisbon's recent mood swings:
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're pregnant," Van Pelt joked, laughing as she tossed a pillow at Teresa after her friend pouted indignantly at the teasing. "These sudden mood changes of yours are getting suspicious."
She brushed it off at the time, blaming it on the stress of capturing Joe Keller and the transformation of her simple wedding — which was initially planned with just one witness — into a grand celebration for family and friends. But the seed of doubt had been planted. Lisbon managed to push it aside as the FBI team finally took Lazarus into custody, at the altar as she and Patrick exchanged their most sincere and perfect vows, and even in the blissful aftermath of the ceremony. The worry seemed distant, unnoticed during their first night as husband and wife, even on that morning when they woke up in each other's arms, their bodies once again seeking pleasure together.
But it's true what they say—you can't avoid the elephants in the room forever. And now she found herself paralyzed by the fear of a single possibility, which was utterly ironic. Pregnant? Could she really be pregnant? For a long time, Teresa never allowed herself to be afraid of such a thing; but now, at almost 39 years old, without even planning for it... The thought stopped her cold.
She had once wanted to be a mother — perhaps that had been her greatest wish for many years. However, at some point, she'd accepted that it was the kind of thing that would never happen for her. The demands of her job, the lack of time — or maybe even the lack of interest in cultivating her personal life — had caused that dream to drift farther and farther away until it was out of sight. And now here she was, running through calculations and scenarios, trying to avoid the inevitable. They hadn't exactly been the most cautious people in the world over the past few months, so why did this possibility seem so absurd to her?
It was already past 10 a.m., and Jane would be back soon with the supplies he'd gone out to get. They were about to head off to a nearby resort in Houston for their weeklong honeymoon. It wasn't exactly his kind of place, but it was hers, and Patrick always went out of his way to make her happy. Teresa was excited about the time alone together, but she knew that until she discovered the truth, she wouldn't be able to look him in the eye with her usual calm.
So why was she hesitating? What was stopping her from facing this fear that had become impossible to ignore? Oh, of course, the answer was simple: Charlotte. Angela. All the trauma he still carried. Lisbon knew her husband was trying to leave the past behind, but how could anyone truly move on from something like that? How do you get past the most devastating losses of your life? Even after all the time they'd spent together, after all the barriers they'd broken down, part of Jane was still haunted by the ghosts of his wife and daughter.
How would he react to this news if she were truly pregnant? And more importantly, how would he handle it? Teresa couldn't shake the fear that being confronted with the reality of a new life would make him retreat. That the old panic of losing someone he loved would come rushing back and push him away from her. Would it be different this time? He wouldn't leave again, would he? Lisbon knew how much Patrick loved her, how deeply devoted he was to her. But she couldn't help worrying that this news might throw him into a tailspin.
It wasn't about replacing Charlotte or Angela — God, it wasn't even close to that. But every decision, every step they took together, seemed to carry a shadow, and Teresa knew it still influenced how Jane saw the future. And then there were her own insecurities. What would a pregnancy mean for her life? Lisbon couldn't picture herself juggling diapers and criminals. The FBI demanded everything from her, and her work had always been such a huge part of who she was.
Could she balance that with motherhood? Could she still be the competent, relentless agent she'd always been? Or would this pull her away from the job, turn her into someone she barely recognized? After years of dedicating herself to her career, to the relentless pursuit of justice, could she do the same for a child? Would she be a good mother? Did she even have maternal instincts? How would she handle sleepless nights, endless crying, and the demands of a life that would suddenly be in her hands? She barely had time for herself now, could hardly maintain a routine outside of work. Was she ready for all of this?
Teresa had always feared not being enough, of failing. What if she couldn't connect with this new life? What if something in her past — her choices, her scars — kept her from being the mother her child would need? And deep down, there was a doubt she hadn't yet dared to admit to herself: what if, in the end, she simply wasn't ready to be a mother? Patrick had already been a father, and despite all the pain he suffered, Lisbon knew he had been a wonderful one. He might think he had failed, that he had never been enough, but she knew otherwise. But what about her? The only experience she had was with her siblings, and even though she had done everything she could to give them a safe life, the best she could offer, she felt she had never truly managed to fulfill the role they needed. Many times, she believed they resented her for taking on such a tough, inflexible position.
But now, she had to stay practical. There was no point in worrying about the future when the present was still shrouded in uncertainty. Teresa closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and with one final sigh, opened the little box and pulled out the pregnancy test, heading to the bathroom. She inhaled deeply and, with the same rigor and attention to detail she applied to her work, followed the instructions with precision. When she was finished, she leaned on the sink, her cold hands gripping its edge, and stared at her own reflection in the mirror.
Life is what happens while we're busy making plans. She couldn't remember where she had heard that phrase, but now it echoed in her mind, ringing truer than ever before. Glancing at the small test once again, Teresa felt that, deep down, she didn't need confirmation. She already knew what she would find. But when the waiting time finally ended, seeing those two pink lines — bold and undeniable, almost red — brought an avalanche of emotions. The confirmation was real, tangible, and the news hit her with an intensity she hadn't anticipated.
Her heart raced, and along with the joy came a wave of other feelings that left her breathless: fear, anguish, and an overwhelming anxiety. What was she supposed to feel? The nervousness mixed with an almost childlike euphoria, as if a part of her, long dormant, was now waking up to a new reality. She took a few unsteady steps out of the bathroom and sat on the edge of the bed; her gaze fixed on some undefined point ahead of her.
Suddenly, the airstream felt suffocating, the walls too close, as if the space around her was shrinking. She felt trapped, breathless. She needed a moment to process, to reorganize everything she was feeling, but the whirlwind inside her gave no respite. At that moment, the door to the airstream opened softly. Patrick stepped inside with a carefree smile, carrying bags of supplies they'd need. He stopped when he saw her, the smile vanishing the instant his eyes landed on his wife. This wasn't the scene he had expected to walk into.
"Teresa?" he called gently.
She didn't respond, as if she hadn't even noticed his presence.
Jane took a few more steps, setting the bags aside and moving to sit beside her. His sharp gaze, now full of concern, had lost the sparkle it held just moments ago.
He had seen Teresa cry before, but this was different from any other time. For the first time, he couldn't anticipate what was on her mind.
"Honey, what's wrong?" he whispered, trying to draw an answer from her.
She took a shaky breath, unable to summon the strength to look at him.
"It wasn't supposed to be like this," she finally said, her words heavy with emotion.
Patrick frowned, still not understanding.
"What wasn't supposed to be like this?"
"I..." She tried to speak, but it seemed impossible to put into words everything she was feeling.
For a moment, her eyes met his, revealing a mixture of doubt and vulnerability that completely disarmed him. Their connection had always been profound, and Jane — who could read her emotions better than anyone — followed her frightened gaze and noticed her hand resting unconsciously on her abdomen. Then, his eyes shifted to the pregnancy test lying forgotten on the bed beside her.
He could hardly believe it.
"No..." he murmured, his voice a mix of surprise and joy, a smile breaking through as he tried to process what it all meant. "You... You're not joking, are you?"
She nodded slightly, confirming without words, and a wave of emotion swept across Patrick's face. He couldn't contain the joy that surged within him, and his arms quickly wrapped around Lisbon, holding her in an embrace that spoke volumes more than words ever could.
"Teresa!" Jane exclaimed, overwhelmed, his heart pounding in his chest. Laughter and tears mixed as he held her tightly, as though afraid this moment might somehow vanish.
In the arms of the man she loved, she finally felt capable of smiling. The doubts still lingered, but at least in this moment, they faded away. Reality was beginning to take shape, and she realized she wouldn't have to face any of it alone.
"I love you so much," Patrick murmured, kissing her tenderly. "Danm ... I don't even know what to say. I had no idea you were even suspecting."
Lisbon sighed, still trying to process everything she felt.
"I didn't know either, really. Grace is the one who brought it up... And, well, I just wanted to be sure before we traveled. I know we weren't planning this... but its good news?"
He chuckled softly, his eyes sparkling with intensity.
"How could it not be, honey? I'm going to have a child with the love of my life."
"So, you're happy?" she asked, a bit hesitant.
Jane cupped her face gently with his hands, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheek.
"Teresa, you're giving me a second chance." He looked deeply into her eyes, and she felt sincerity in every word he spoke. "Do you have any idea how much you've changed for me? What meeting you has meant to me?"
With a smile, he tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.
"Are you okay? Was this what you wanted?"
"I... I don't know if I can do this," she admitted, her voice barely a whisper. "I'm just scared, I think. But I'm happy too. It's just..."
Lisbon paused, looking down at her hands as if trying to draw strength from within herself.
"I'd already accepted that being a mother wasn't something that would happen for me. And now..."
"And now you're pregnant."
She looked at him, emotional, and nodded with a shy smile.
"And now I'm pregnant."
Patrick couldn't hide his happiness as he heard her repeat the news. But of course, he was always going to be Patrick Jane… That would never change. So naturally, he asked:
"Well then… Do you have any idea when it might have happened?"
Teresa laughed, some of her nervousness melting away at his humor.
"We haven't been exactly the most careful people… So, it's kind of hard to know. I mean, we've been practicing quite a lot."
He burst out laughing, pulling her into a tighter embrace.
"Well, I can say I'm very happy that all that 'practice' led to something this amazing. And even happier to know we'll go through all of this together."
"You know I believe in you, Patrick. And this time…" She hesitated, her worried expression revealing an old fear, one Jane was all too familiar with.
As always, he anticipated what she didn't need to say.
"It'll be different this time. I'm not going anywhere, and I won't let my fears get the better of me. I'm here. With you," he assured her.
Lisbon smiled, deeply moved. Holding his hand, her expression soft, she murmured:
"You're going to be an amazing father. I have no doubt about that."
He tilted his head, smiling and accepting her affirmation warmly. It always meant the world to him when it came from her.
"And you're going to be a wonderful mother. I hope the baby takes after you."
"I don't know about that… I was kind of hoping they'd be more like you."
They laughed together, and for the first time in a long while, the future didn't seem so daunting. The following silence was comforting, but Jane, being Jane, couldn't resist breaking it.
"So, what do we do now?"
"Well… I think the first thing is to schedule an appointment, right? We can do that in Houston when we're there."
"Right, first stop: the doctor," he agreed, visibly excited. "But we'll also need to talk to Cho. You'll need to stay off the field for a while, especially now that I won't be around to keep you safe."
She laughed at his teasing. "Yeah, and we'll need to make some changes to the house plans, you know… We'll need a nursery."
"I'll make sure there's space. I might need to call in some help to get everything ready before he or she arrives, but it'll all work out."
"I think this is the first time I've truly managed to surprise you, isn't it? You didn't suspect a thing."
"The emotional confusion… Well, I thought it was just because of the wedding. But you, Teresa, you outdid yourself. This is, without a doubt, the best wedding gift I could've ever received."
She moved closer, squeezing his hands.
"Really? Even with everything?"
"Even with everything."
Of course, it wouldn't be easy; Patrick knew that. Like his wife, he also had his fears and doubts, but there was one crucial difference: he couldn't fail again. He couldn't lose the people he loved most in the world, not a second time. The thought terrified him, keeping him constantly alert, as if any misstep could cost him the newfound peace he'd worked so hard to achieve.
Still, Teresa was right. Not everything was his fault, and letting himself be consumed by regret only trapped him in a cycle of pain. Jane loved protecting her, more than words could convey, but he also knew she was more than capable of taking care of herself. It was a hard lesson he'd had to learn, especially after trying to interfere with her work. Yet he was starting to understand that those risks were part of who they were — just as they would now be part of the child they were expecting.
The fear wouldn't vanish; he knew that. His past had been too harsh, too traumatic to simply forget. But for the first time in many years, he was beginning to grasp that he wasn't doomed to sadness. He wasn't destined to a life of cruelty.
He knew that, at some point, he'd probably have a quiet conversation with Cho about keeping an extra eye on Teresa or that he'd double his precautions when the baby arrived. But he also understood that life was a constant risk. He couldn't keep them in an impenetrable bubble.
This was a second chance being handed to him — a rare gift, one that few people could claim to have received. And yes, Jane knew this wasn't about erasing his past. He would never dream of replacing the memories he cherished of Angela and Charlotte. Still, he couldn't help but think that if they were here, they would encourage him to move forward, to embrace this new chapter with Teresa — just as the people around him always told him to do.
It had taken a long time for him to truly accept it — the idea that he, too, deserved happiness. Perhaps full understanding was only arriving now, but it finally made sense: he deserved to be happy, and no one made him feel more whole, more alive, than Teresa Lisbon.
He wouldn't just be sharing his life with her; they were embarking on the journey of parenthood together, as a family. It was a lot. It was almost indescribable. And although it felt like more than he deserved, he was profoundly grateful it was happening.
For the first time in a long time, life felt complete and vibrant. It was as if every path he had walked, no matter how difficult, had led him to this exact moment — to Teresa and the child they were now expecting together.
"I love you, Teresa Lisbon. Thank you for saving me."
"I love you, Patrick Jane. Thank you for finding me."
They would be okay. He was sure of it.
