Spider-Man: The King in Black – Part 4

The Last Stand of the Fantastic Four

The Baxter Building stood tall against the skyline, a beacon of innovation and resilience in a world that had grown increasingly dark. Yet, inside, tension simmered as what remained of the Fantastic Four gathered in the old control room. The team's once-gleaming instruments now flickered with uneasy lights, casting long shadows across the room.

Reed Richards—Mr. Fantastic—stood at the control panel, eyes flicking from one screen to another, brow furrowed. Even with his elastic physique, the years of battle and loss had etched lines into his face. He glanced over his shoulder, his tone grave.

"It's spreading faster than I thought. Knull's influence… it's reaching further and deeper each day. And Peter…" Reed's voice trailed off, heavy with concern.

Ben Grimm, the Thing, cracked his rocky knuckles, his rough voice breaking the silence. "So, what're we waiting for, Stretcho? If this is as bad as you say, maybe it's time we do something 'bout it."

Susan Storm—the Invisible Woman—stood next to Reed, her arms crossed. She looked between her husband and Ben, her face set with worry. "Reed, you said Knull's influence has taken hold of Peter, but he's still Peter under all of that. There has to be some way to reach him."

Reed sighed, rubbing his temple. "I don't know, Sue. This isn't like anything we've faced before. Knull is more than a symbiote—he's a god, an ancient force. Once he sinks his claws in, it's almost impossible to break free."

Ben shook his head, clenching his massive fists. "So, what? We just sit here and wait for Spidey to knock on our door, bringin' that dark goo with him?"

Johnny Storm—the Human Torch—leaned against the wall, his face uncharacteristically somber. "I know Peter. We've fought together, laughed together… he's like family. And if anyone's still in there, somewhere under all that darkness, I'll find him. But if he's gone…" Johnny's voice grew soft, as if he could barely bring himself to say it. "If he's gone, we'll do what we have to."

Reed's eyes met Johnny's, a somber understanding passing between them. "We'll try to save him, Johnny. But we can't underestimate what he's become. This isn't the Peter we all knew."

A silence fell over the room, the weight of their mission pressing down on them. Susan finally broke it, her voice quiet but resolute. "If there's a way to save him, then we have to try. That's what we do. We don't give up on family."

Ben grunted, his granite-like face softening slightly. "You're right, Susie. 'Cause if there's anyone worth fightin' for, it's that kid."

Reed turned to the group, his gaze determined. "We'll need a plan. Peter may be under Knull's control, but he's still one of the most formidable fighters we've ever known. And with Knull's power amplifying him, he's even more dangerous."

Johnny's fists ignited, flames flickering around his hands. "So we hit him hard. Shock him, break Knull's hold long enough for us to reach him. I don't care if he's got a god whispering in his ear—we're bringing him back."

Susan placed a hand on Johnny's shoulder, her touch grounding him. "Careful, Johnny. Peter's lost nearly everyone he cared about. He's not going to see things the way we do. This darkness, this power… it might be all he thinks he has left."

Reed nodded. "Which is why we have to approach this carefully. If we go in guns blazing, we risk pushing him even further into Knull's control. We need to find a way to remind him of who he is—who he was."

Ben chuckled, his rocky face breaking into a grim smile. "You're talkin' 'bout the kid who used to take down half his rogue gallery with a bunch of webs and a joke. That guy's in there somewhere, just needs a good ol' reminder."

Johnny's voice softened, his flames dimming. "Yeah. That's the Peter I remember."

Reed took a deep breath, his gaze sweeping across his team. "Then it's settled. We're going to bring Peter back—or, if nothing else, keep him from falling further into Knull's grasp. But make no mistake… this will be one of the hardest battles we've ever fought."

Johnny smirked, though the concern in his eyes was clear. "Hard battles are kinda our thing, right?"

Ben cracked his knuckles, his gravelly voice tinged with determination. "Darn right. If there's one thing the Fantastic Four don't do, it's back down."

Susan stepped forward, her resolve unwavering. "For Peter, for everyone we've lost, we keep fighting."

Reed gave a solemn nod. "Then let's get ready. We don't know when he'll come for us… but when he does, we'll be ready."

The team exchanged a final look, their resolve unbreakable. In the face of insurmountable odds, the Fantastic Four had always stood tall. And this time would be no different.

In the distance, thunder rumbled, and the shadows outside the Baxter Building seemed to thicken, crawling closer.

They knew Peter was coming. And this time, they were prepared to face whatever darkness he brought with him.
