Ding!
The tone rings in my head as soon as I finish greeting Dad's family.
[Mission completed: Meet the family
Reward: Kiss of Luck
The Kiss of Luck attributes: Gives receiver good luck for a year. No reprucussions. Only works once a year.]
I hoped to change a certain canonical death with my new reward.
Tuning back in I viewed everyone around the long dining table at the Clearwaters.
Harry and Sue were an interesting pairing, like water and fire, and yet they worked so well. Harry Clearwater was calm and kind, Sue blunt and bold.
Leah their eldest was stern at first but I recognized someone after my own heart she was just reserved at first as she observed me. She was only a year older than me at 13, but she seemed rather perceptive.
Seth was a gentle and lovely soul. He grinned as soon as he saw me. At 7 he was adorable.
I took a bite of my fish fry and hummed, it nearly melted in my mouth.
"I'm glad you like it Isa." Harry grinned. "The fish was freshly caught by myself and Billy."
Billy Black let out a booming laugh before clapping my father on the back, "Yeah Charlie here couldn't catch one fish yesterday. Too nervous for his little girl visiting I think."
I glanced at my father to see his cheeks redden, I elbowed him gently. "Thank you Dad."
"What I didn't catch the fish?"
I shook my head, "Thank you for everything." I looked back to Harry then Billy then their whole families, "This is the best night in my life."
And it was. So many other lives lived moments like these were manufactured but this wasn't. They all did this out of the goodness of their hearts. Because they all cared so much for Charlie.
I went back to finishing my food when Sarah Black clapped her hands.
"Dessert anyone? I made my fabulous cinnamon buns."
A cheer went up around the table.
My gaze drifted across the excited faces of Rachel and Rebecca Black, the twins, also 13. They were lively and chattering amongst themselves before their gaze met mine.
"What's your favorite color, Isa?" Rebecca tilted her head to the side.
"Ooh let me guess." Rachel leaned forward eyeing my clothes with a critical eye. "Brown!"
I was wearing a brown sweater and dark jeans, a polka dotted scarf tying my hair up in a bow.
"I do like brown..."
"I knew it!"
"But my favorite color is emerald green."
"You should wear it then!" Rebecca spoke up.
"Oh I'm not sure how it would look on me."
"Green looks good on everyone." Rachel spoke up.
I smiled, "I'll try to incorporate it in more things then."
I glanced to the side at the youngest Black, Jacob, 9 years old and he stared at me all through dinner.
"Do I have something in my teeth, Jacob?"
He shook his head, "You are like an old lady."
"Jacob!" Sarah chided as she set down some delicious smelling cinnamon buns in the center of the table.
"What? She talks in big words? She dresses like a granny too."
I smiled at him, "What's wrong with that?"
"Nothin'." He glanced up at me, "I just thought you came to play with us but you are too old."
I laughed, "I can still play."
He leaned his hands on the table and nearly shouted, "Prove it."
And I did. .
Whenever I wasn't with Charlie, I was in La Push with the Clearwaters and Blacks.
Seth, Jacob and I played tag through the cool shores and icy waters of the beach. We challenged each other to board games. The twins made me over a couple times, painting my nails in an array of greens. Leah and I climbed trees.
And when the summer was over all the kids didn't want to let me go even Leah looked at me with sadness.
"I'll be back next summer."
And then I kissed every member of the Black and Clearwaters on the cheek before I left. "For good luck this year." I grinned, hoping it would keep them all safe.
And before leaving on my flight back to Arizona I made sure to give my dad a kiss on the cheek for luck too.
