First thing upon gaining awareness again was a mission completed alert.
[Canon Event completed: Isabella Survives Car Crash
Reward: 1000 points]
Then the next thing I noticed was the pain. Nothing I hadn't felt before, I had many almost-deaths in my past missions. It didn't ease the pain any though.
1000 points was not bad for a near-death experience I'd had worse rewards for such in the past.
Next was the soft snores that came to my right.
Next was the silent company of the others I could sense in the room.
"She's waking up."
I never thought a vampire's voice could sound so rough. Like they'd spent the night crying. I didn't think that was possible. Edward had barely known me for a full two days.
"Isa!" I felt my Dad jolt awake, before slumping on the edge of my bed. "She still hasn't awoken."
"Dad?" My lips parted and my voice came out in a parched whisper.
"Isa?" His voice sounded so broken. "Can you open your eyes for me, sweetheart?"
"They feel so heavy."
The silent steps of another before the smooth voice that I vaguely recognized as Carlisle spoke near me on my left.
"Miss Swan I'm going to shine a light in your eyes, ok?"
I would have nodded if I could but I whispered "yes."
I felt him shine a light into my eyes and I blinked.
He hummed beneath his breath and I vaguely wondered if that's where Edward got it from.
"Good eye movement. We'll need to do a couple more tests and a MRI."
I blinked open my eyes again, my eyelids still heavy but not as bad as before.
All the Cullen kids were in the room, but after seeing me awake they reluctantly left the room after their father's insistence.
"How long?"
"72 hours." Dr Cullen answered.
No wonder my father had fallen asleep by my side.
--
Recovery was hard especially when I noticed that behind the worry and grief in Charlie's eyes there was a wall that had been raised and I feared the worst.
An odd consequence was a notification I got from my system.
[Congratulations the Cullens have now become your allies.
Allies will keep your secrets and seek to protect you.]
It was all happening rather quickly. Too quickly and I wondered how much my Soother abilities had affected things. And what secrets had they discovered that they wouldn't tell to anyone? Had Carlisle noticed something odd and covered for me? Probably.
By the time I was out of the hospital which took a week, since I had nearly died and was in coma for 3 days, Charlie seemed ready to talk about what he discovered.
"So you found out?" I went straight to the point the first dinner back home.
Charlie's eyes widened.
"You forget I organized all of Renee's important documents until she married Phil and he took over. I saw the tests." I looked down at my plate, "I'm sorry I didn't tell you after I found out but I was scared I'd lose you." And I knew they wouldn't find the real Isabella, by now she would have been on missions for the Agency.
Charlie stared down at his plate, brow furrowed. "I tried to find your bio parents. There is no record of them anywhere. I have a friend in the FBI and called in a favor. They couldn't find..." He mumbled the next part, "the other Isabella either."
I set down my utensils and held my hands tightly in my lap. This was the moment, would I lose him now?
"Where does this leave us then?"
He looked up, the rims of his brown eyes red from crying. "You are still mine, kiddo." He sighed, "You are still my kid. The little girl that would call me every weekend without a fail since the first time she could speak in a full sentence. Leaving a voice mail if you couldn't reach me. The little girl who was determined to see me every summer without fail, no matter the things her mother tried to bribe her with to stay with her. The young woman who wanted to live with her old man after all this time. The young woman who has wise old eyes and who selflessly threw herself in danger to save another life. You are my daughter and no one can take that away from me or you."
My eyes watered as tears fell down my cheeks, "I love you, Dad."
Charlie stood and kneeled before my chair wiping my tears with his thumb.
"I love you, too, munchkin."
