Thanksgiving Showdown at Mario Stadium

(A/N: Happy Thanksgiving!)

The Mushroom Kingdom Basketball Association (MKBA) was having its biggest regular season game yet—a Thanksgiving showdown between the Mario All-Stars and the Bowser Monsters. The sold-out crowd at Mario Stadium had been treated to a high-energy clash full of dunks, three-pointers, and no shortage of drama. And now, with the game tied at 99 points, the entire fate of the match rested on one shot.

On my shot.

I stood at the free-throw line, the weight of the moment pressing down like a Thwomp. The lights in the arena dimmed until only the court and the basket were illuminated. Lance, the Toad referee, held the ball, standing beside me, his face serious. Behind me, the two teams huddled just past the half-court line. They whispered amongst themselves, reflecting on the buzzer-beater that had sent the game into this critical moment.

Mario: "Reginald-a, what a moment! That three-pointer was-a the stuff of legends, eh? Bowser thought he could block it, but you floated like a Para-Troopa!"

Peach: "Reginald, you've been incredible all game. I mean, Bowser literally fouled you at the buzzer because he knew he couldn't stop you fairly."

Daisy: "That's right! And that shot? Whew! Ice in your veins. We needed that to tie the game. Now, it's just one free throw. You've got this!"

Bowser Jr.: "Pfft. Don't get too confident, All-Stars. My dad fouled you because he was strategizing. You'll probably miss under all this pressure!"

Bowser: "Quiet, Jr.! If I'd known that shot was gonna go in, I would've breathed fire on the ball! But you got lucky. Let's see if you can keep it up."

Luigi: "Don't-a listen to him, Reginald! You've been clutch all season. Just do what you do best—focus and release."

Shy Guy: "…Too quiet to talk right now. This is intense…"

As the players closed their eyes and turned away, Lance handed me the ball.

"Alright, Reginald," he said, his voice steady. "This is your moment. Take your time. Breathe. On my signal, release the ball."

I nodded, gripping the ball. The crowd was silent—a stark contrast to the roaring chaos from earlier in the game. All I could hear was my own heartbeat, and the faint sound of my sneakers squeaking as I adjusted my stance.

I closed my eyes for a second, thinking about what this moment meant. It wasn't just about the game. It was Thanksgiving, a time to reflect and give thanks. I thought about my team—Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy—who had cheered me on all season. I thought about the fans, who had packed the stadium, showing their love for basketball. And, surprisingly, I thought about Bowser and his team. They'd pushed us to be our best today.

Lance's voice cut through my thoughts.

"Release…now."

I exhaled, bending my knees, and let the ball roll off my fingertips. The arc was perfect—smooth, high, and true. The arena held its collective breath as the ball sailed toward the hoop.

SWISH!

The crowd erupted, the scoreboard flashed Mario All-Stars 100 – Bowser Monsters 99, and confetti rained from the ceiling. My teammates rushed toward me, cheering. Mario and Luigi picked me up, twirling me around.

"Reginald, you're-a the hero!" Mario shouted.

Even Bowser, scowling, gave a begrudging nod.

"Well, you earned it," he said, crossing his arms. "But next time, we're bringing our A-game."

As the celebration continued, I stood at center court, looking around at the joy on everyone's faces. Thanksgiving had always been about food and family—but tonight, it was also about basketball, teamwork, and one unforgettable moment.
