Chapter 27

Ash's head tilted upward, his expression pained, his breath shallow. "Queen Rin…" he murmured weakly, his voice barely audible. Then, as if a realization struck him, his eyes opened wider, focusing on the figure standing before him. Recognition flashed in his gaze. "Lillie?"

Lillie gasped softly, relief flooding her as she stepped closer. "Yes, it's me," she said, her voice trembling. "I'm here."

Ash blinked, struggling to process his surroundings. He glanced around the glowing chamber, his eyes darting from the pulsating crystals to the fossil Pokémon frozen in serene repose along the walls. His confusion deepened as he tried to lift his arms but found them unresponsive. The weight of the crystals encasing his body pressed him down, leaving him trapped in place.

"The Tree of Beginning…" Ash murmured, his voice faint. "Why am I here? And… why can't I move?" He looked down at his body, his gaze narrowing as he noticed the intricate outfit he was wearing. The blue and silver attire shimmered faintly in the crystalline light, a perfect replica of the legendary Aura Guardian's clothing. His breath hitched. "What's going on? Why am I wearing Sir Aaron's outfit?"

Lillie hesitated, unsure how to ease the weight of the truth. She clutched the staff in her hands, its aura faintly resonating, as if sensing her turmoil. Taking a deep breath, she knelt beside Ash, her voice steady but soft. "This is the third mirage, Ash," she explained. "In this one, we're… we've taken on the roles of Queen Rin and Sir Aaron. This is after the great war."

Ash's expression darkened as the words sank in. He closed his eyes briefly, his jaw tightening. "A mirage," he repeated bitterly, the word laced with frustration. His eyes opened again, fixing on Lillie with a mix of anger and sorrow. "So, I'm trapped here... like this?"

He gestured weakly with his head toward the crystals encasing his body, his tone growing heavier. "And I can't even move?"

Lillie's heart clenched at his helplessness. She reached out, her hand brushing lightly against the crystal surrounding his arm. "I don't know why this is happening," she admitted, her voice wavering. "But if this is a mirage, there must be something we're supposed to do. Something we're meant to learn."

Ash's frown deepened, his eyes clouding with a mix of exhaustion and frustration. "Queen Rin and Sir Aaron, huh?" he muttered. "And this is after the war. Great. More fighting. More sacrifices."

His words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken pain. Lillie could feel the weight of his emotions, the same burden she had seen him carry so many times before. She tightened her grip on the staff, determination flickering in her eyes.

"It's true that Sir Aaron sacrificed himself for nothing," Lillie said softly, her voice tinged with sadness. "He gave everything he had to protect the Tree of Beginning, but the greed for power inside people's hearts… it made his sacrifice meaningless."

Ash's gaze darkened, his expression hardening as her words struck a chord. "Power," he muttered, his tone bitter. "It's always about power. I had power once—the power of the Rumbling."

Lillie froze, her eyes widening as he continued.

"It wasn't meant to destroy," Ash said, his voice low and heavy. "It was supposed to protect. To keep aura users safe from the world that hunted us like animals. But people didn't see it that way. They saw the Rumbling as a weapon of genocide, and because of that fear, they rebelled. They came for me."

His voice trembled, anger and regret mingling in his words. "I tried to fight back, but... they shot me. Wounded me. And because of that, I lost control. The Rumbling spiraled out of my hands, and in the end…" His eyes closed, his body tensing. "Eighty percent of the people were killed. Innocents. Entire cities wiped out."

Lillie's grip on the staff tightened, her knuckles turning white as she struggled to process his confession. The weight of his guilt pressed down on her like a physical force.

"Ash…" she whispered, her voice breaking.

He didn't look at her, his gaze distant, as if he were reliving the moment. "They didn't understand. I didn't want that. I didn't want any of it. But the fear, the hatred… it made them blind. And because of their blindness, I became the monster they feared."

Silence fell between them, broken only by the faint hum of the crystals around them. Lillie finally found her voice, her words trembling with emotion.

"If I had power, too," she said, her tone resolute, "I would have used it to protect you. I wouldn't have let them hurt you. I… I should have taken the bullet instead of you."

Ash's eyes flickered toward her, surprised by her words. Lillie continued, her voice rising with determination.

"If I had taken the bullet, the Rumbling wouldn't have gone out of control. You could have stopped it before it became a disaster. None of this would have happened."

Her voice cracked, and tears welled in her eyes. "You shouldn't have had to bear this alone."

Ash stared at her, his expression softening as a mix of gratitude and sorrow filled his eyes. "Lillie… you don't understand. Even if you had the power, even if you had taken the bullet… it wouldn't have changed what's in their hearts. The greed, the fear… it was always going to end this way."

Lillie lowered her gaze, gripping the staff tightly as tears slid silently down her cheeks. "You've always been so strong, Ash. I've… I've always relied on you. Even when I thought I'd grown, I kept leaning on you every time things got hard. I'm sorry."

Her voice quivered, the weight of her own insecurities spilling out into the quiet chamber. "I used to think I couldn't do anything on my own. That I needed others to carry me through everything… and I always ended up needing you most of all."

Ash's expression softened, the guilt in his heart momentarily giving way to concern. "Lillie," he began gently, "you do have power. More than you realize. Don't ever think you don't."

She looked up at him, startled by the firm conviction in his voice.

"Remember Alola?" he asked, his tone steady. "When you unleashed that blizzard across the region to protect the Pokémon and people you cared about? That was you, Lillie. Your power. Not anyone else's."

Lillie's eyes widened, her mind flashing back to that moment. She had felt so helpless at the time, but hearing Ash acknowledge her strength now brought a strange warmth to her chest.

"And it's because of your power, your determination, that you became part of the Elite Four," Ash continued. "After Alice's death… it was your strength that helped keep things together. You gave people hope."

Lillie blinked rapidly, her tears now falling for an entirely different reason. Ash's words wrapped around her like a gentle embrace, filling her with a warmth she hadn't realized she desperately needed.

"I…" She struggled to find her voice, her lips trembling. "Thank you, Ash. That means so much to me."

She stepped closer, her grip on the staff loosening as she looked at him with newfound resolve. "But it's not just me, Ash. You have power too, a kind of power that's far greater than anything else. Even in a world that hated us—hated aura users—you were kind. You never let their cruelty change who you were."

Ash's eyes widened slightly as Lillie's words hit him, but she continued, her voice growing stronger.

"Even when those humans called us animals, scum, and everything else… you still believed in helping others. That's a strength I've always admired about you, Ash. You're not just powerful—you're kind."

Ash's gaze softened, his rigid shoulders relaxing slightly as her words began to pierce through the layers of guilt and pain he carried. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, he allowed himself to breathe deeply, the warmth of her sincerity easing the weight in his heart.

Ash let out a soft sigh, his gaze drifting toward the shimmering crystals surrounding them. "This is the third mirage," he murmured, his voice contemplative. "I've started to notice a pattern. Every time I feel like I've healed… like I've come to terms with something, the mirage begins to shatter. And then we're separated again." His voice faltered for a moment, but he managed a small smile. "But… no matter how many times we're torn apart, you always find me, Lillie. And for that, I'm glad."

Lillie's heart swelled at his words. She stepped closer, her grip on the staff tightening as her emotions surged. "I think this mirage will end soon too," she said softly, glancing around as faint tremors began to ripple through the space. Her voice grew stronger, her determination shining in her eyes. "But no matter how many times we're separated, Ash, I'll always come back to you. That's the power of love."

Ash chuckled, a soft, bittersweet sound that echoed in the crystalline chamber. "You always know what to say," he said warmly, his eyes meeting hers. "I wish I could hug you right now, Lillie. But… being stuck as Sir Aaron, unable to move…" His voice trailed off, frustration evident in his tone as his gaze dropped to the crystals encasing his body. "It just reminds me how powerless I feel sometimes."

Lillie stepped closer, her cheeks flushed, her resolve firm. "You don't need to feel powerless, Ash. You've already done more than enough for everyone, for me, for the world. Let me be strong for you this time." She leaned forward, her voice soft as she added, "And you don't need to hug me."

Without hesitation, she pressed a gentle kiss to his lips, her touch filled with love and reassurance. Ash's eyes widened slightly in surprise before softening, his expression relaxing as he absorbed the moment. He wanted to move, to embrace her, but even without motion, he felt her warmth and determination wrap around him.

When she pulled back, his gaze drifted to the Pokémon standing faithfully at her side. Their presence was both grounding and inspiring, a reminder of the strength they had lent her throughout this journey.

He smiled faintly. "You've been with her this whole time, haven't you?" he asked, his voice addressing the Pokémon directly. "Thank you for standing by her, for giving her strength when I couldn't. Thank you for believing in us."

The Pokémon roared in agreement, their voices strong and united, echoing with unwavering loyalty. The chamber seemed to vibrate with their shared resolve, their aura filling the space with a radiant energy.

Then, a familiar ripple passed through the air, the subtle signal of change. The crystals around them began to glow brighter, their light intensifying as cracks formed along their surfaces. Lillie and Ash exchanged a knowing look, the same bittersweet understanding in their eyes.

"It's happening again," Ash said softly, his voice calm despite the chaos. "The mirage… it's breaking."

Lillie nodded, her grip tightening on Sir Aaron's staff. "But not for long," she said firmly, her voice steady even as the world began to dissolve. "No matter what happens, Ash, I'll find you again. I always will."

Ash smiled, a mix of gratitude and sorrow on his face. "I'll be waiting, Lillie."

The crystalline chamber began to fracture, light spilling through the cracks. The Pokémon roared one last time, their voices blending into the cascading brilliance. The air grew warmer, filled with an unspoken promise that even as the mirage shattered, their bond would remain.

With one last glance at each other, the mirage collapsed into radiant light, carrying them into the unknown once more.

Here is a new chapter, and you can see that we have the third mirage done. I hope you like it and the next chapter will be the fourth mirage.
