Episode Thirty-Nine: Torn Loyalties

The Sky Patrol soars along, cutting through the skies over Soumerca. Inside, the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife, despite the warm light of the sun streaming through the windows.

Sonic pilots the airship in silence, his eyes on the horizon, but his thoughts far from the task at hand. His mind churns with conflicting emotions, constantly bouncing between Sailor Moon and Mercury. As he steals glances toward where the Sailor Senshi are sitting, his heart feels like it's being pulled in two different directions.

* Sonic: (thinking) "How did it get like this? Usagi's... she's special. She's fun, she makes me laugh, and I want to help her heal. But... Ami..."

He looks over at Sailor Mercury, who's working quietly at her Mercury Supercomputer across the room. Her serene face is illuminated by the soft glow of the screen, and Sonic feels his pulse quicken as he watches her.

* Sonic: (thinking) "She's brilliant, far stronger than she realizes. And even more beautiful than she seemed from afar. Her beauty... it's driving me mad... I've never seen anyone like her. I never thought I'd say this, but not even Elise can hold a candle to her..."

Sonic closes his eyes, trying to block out the overwhelming emotions surging within him. But it's impossible. His heart is torn between two girls, and the weight of it is starting to wear him down.

* Sonic: (thinking) "Sailor Moon's pretty, but Sailor Mercury... she's ravishing."

Just as he's wrestling with these thoughts, Mercury glances up from her screen and meets his gaze. Both of them blush, awkwardly looking away from each other. Ami's fingers tremble slightly as she tries to refocus on her work, but her mind is flooded with memories of what she told him.

Meanwhile, below the clouds in a small Soumercan village, the scene is far more sinister. Jack stands towering over a group of terrified Dog villagers, his black and gold armor glistening in the sunlight. His cold, glowing heterochrome eyes scan the crowd, a sickening grin spreading across his face.

* Jack: "Ok, so, I'm looking for something shiny. About the size of your head. You wouldn't happen to have a Chaos Emerald lying around, would you?"

The villagers exchange panicked looks. One older villager steps forward, trembling.

* Old Villager: (shaking) "W-We don't have anything like that, sir. We're just a peaceful village... Please, we mean no harm."

Jack's grin widens, and he chuckles softly, almost like he's enjoying a private joke. He takes a casual step forward, and the crowd shrinks back, their terror palpable.

* Jack: (sarcastic) "No harm, huh? That's disappointing. I was hoping this would be fun. But if you've got nothing to offer..."

Without warning, Jack raises his left arm cannon, powered by the Red Chaos Emerald, and fires a blast directly at one of the village houses. The explosion rips through the building, sending debris flying and villagers scattering in every direction. Screams fill the air as flames engulf the wreckage.

* Jack: (laughing) "Oops! My bad. But hey, who needs practice when you've got power like mine, right?"

As the villagers try to flee, Jack unleashes blast after blast, reducing their homes to smoldering rubble. His laughter echoes through the burning village as he casually strolls through the destruction.

* Jack: (gleefully) "The thing about chaos, folks... it's contagious! Spread it around and watch everything fall apart! Isn't that fun?!"

His final blast reduces the village to nothing more than a pile of charred ruins, and Jack walks away with a satisfied smile, leaving behind nothing but despair and devastation.

Back aboard the Sky Patrol, the mood couldn't be more different. Sailor Venus sits near the back of the command room, staring out the window, her heart heavy with guilt and sadness. Ever since Sally's breakdown and what had happened with Thunderbolt, she hadn't been able to shake the feeling that somehow, she had failed. She barely notices when Knuckles walks over and sits beside her. His usually gruff expression is softer today, and for a moment, he says nothing, just watching her out of the corner of his eye.

* Knuckles: "You all right?"

Venus shakes her head, tears welling up in her eyes. She tries to wipe them away before Knuckles sees, but it's too late. He sighs, leaning back in his chair.

* Knuckles: "I know it's hard. But this is the kind of stuff that happens when you fight for as long as we have. I've known Sally since we were four... and even I can't believe what she's become."

Venus looks up at him, her voice shaking.

* Venus: "I wanted to save her, Knuckles... I tried so hard to reach her, but she... she just..."

She breaks down, covering her face with her hands as the weight of it all crashes down on her. Knuckles reaches over, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.

* Knuckles: (softly) "Sometimes we can't save everyone. It's a hard truth, but it's something I've had to learn the hard way. What happened to Sally... it isn't your fault."

* Venus: (whispering) "But I feel like I should've done more..."

* Knuckles: "You did what you could, Venus. You're not a failure."

His words bring a small, sad smile to her face. She nods, but the pain is still there, lingering in her heart.

In another room of the Sky Patrol, Princess Sally stirs, waking up from her unconscious state. Her hands are bound, her gloves and Ring-Blades removed. She glares daggers at Silver, who stands watch at the door, his expression resolute.

* Sally: (sneering) "So, this is what it's come to? Locking me up like some rabid beast? How noble of you, Silver. So loyal."

Silver remains calm, his arms crossed as he watches her coldly.

* Silver: "This isn't about locking you up, Sally. It's about protecting you... and everyone else."

* Sally: (laughing bitterly) "Protecting me? Me? Don't make me laugh. You're weak. And you know what makes you weak? Your inability to make the hard decisions. Too soft to do what needs to be done."

The white Hedgehog doesn't flinch, though Sally's words cut deep.

* Silver: "Maybe we are. But we're not going to lose who we are just to win. If we become like Dr. Eggman, then what's the point of any of this?"

Sally's eyes blaze with anger as she roars her venomous response.

* Sally: (yelling) "And this is why he always wins, and this is why you always lose! Because you don't have the guts to finish this. Those are the creeds of cowards, hiding behind your so-called morals!"

* Silver: "It's not about guts, Sally. It's about not becoming the very thing we're fighting against. I'm sorry for what you've gone through, but this isn't the way."

For a moment, Sally falters. The pain in her eyes is raw, and for a brief second, she looks like the girl she once was — before everything fell apart. But then, just as quickly, the bitterness returns, and her sneer deepens.

* Sally: (glaring, voice shaking) "You don't know what it's like, Silver... to lose someone like I lost Nicole. You don't know what that feels like."

Silver's voice softens, but his resolve remains unshaken.

* Silver: "You're right, Sally. I don't know what that's like. But I do know what it's like to feel like everything's falling apart. I've been there, Sally. But becoming like Eggman won't fix anything. It'll just make us worse."

Sally falls silent, her eyes downcast as she processes his words. But the anger is still there, simmering beneath the surface.

* Sally: (whispering) "You don't deserve to survive this..."
