Episode Forty: Glimmers of Hope
The Sky Patrol sails steadily across the plains of Soumerca, with its crew tense and focused. They left the Soumerca Egg Army base far behind, but their next move was crucial. The weight of recent events still lingered heavily in the air. The mood in the briefing room was somber yet determined. Bunnie stood near the front of the room, staring intently at the map of Soumerca displayed on the wall. Her usual cheery demeanor was nowhere to be found, replaced by a weary, thoughtful expression. The others stood around the room in various states of attention: Sonic, Knuckles, Sailor Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, and Silver. Even Tails was there, despite his recovery.
* Jupiter: (pointing at the northeastern part of the map) "What about Pais Misterioso? I've read about them in school! They're known for their warriors. Maybe we can rally some help there."
* Bunnie: (arms crossed, sighing) "Sugar, no offense, but that place is all ceremony and procedure. Sure, they got some strong warriors, but everything's got to go through all the 'proper channels,' and with Princess Sally out of commission..."
Her voice trailed off, and everyone in the room shifted uncomfortably. Bunnie shook her head.
* Bunnie: "It wouldn't work. It would take way too long, and frankly, we don't need that kinda hassle right now. Besides, I've been there once, and they are some stuffy folk. Everything's gotta be 'official,' and without Sally-girl to make things official, we're in a heap of trouble."
The mention of Sally caused the group to fall silent, the air in the room thickening. Sonic clenched his fists, feeling the weight of the unspoken truth: Their leader was no longer the person they had once followed without question. Venus reached out to put a comforting hand on Jupiter's shoulder.
* Jupiter: (feeling hopeless) "But then where do we go?"
* Bunnie: (pointing to the northwestern part of the map) "The Wolf Pack Nation. They're our best bet. They're friends of the Freedom Fighters, and they've never let us down. They'll help."
There was a murmur of agreement from the others. Bunnie's expression softened, but only slightly.
* Bunnie: "It's the only place left that makes sense. And the Wolf Pack ain't gonna put us through the wringer like Pais Misterioso would. Plus, they've got history with us."
Everyone seemed to agree. Rotor nodded as he adjusted the Sky Patrol's trajectory.
* Rotor: "To the Wolf Pack Nation then. Let's do this."
Jack stood at the edge of a small, vibrant village, one of Toucans, watching the peaceful people going about their day. His eyes glowed with malicious delight as he hovered just out of sight. He had done this multiple times now — creeping in silently, watching, waiting for the right moment to strike. His upgraded body gleamed in the sunlight, his sinister smile creeping across his face. A few villagers caught sight of him and froze, their expressions shifting from curiosity to horror as they realized who — no, what — was standing before them.
* Jack: (smiling evilly) "What's good, y'all? I'm looking for something. You wouldn't happen to have a Chaos Emerald lying around, would you?"
The terrified villagers backed away slowly, shaking their heads in desperate denial.
* Villager 1: (stammering) "W-we don't have anything like that... P-Please, we're just a small village. We've never even s-seen a Chaos Emerald before…"
* Jack: "Is that right? That's so unfortunate. I really was hoping you'd be more helpful."
One of the village elders, a stooped old man with a cane, bravely stepped forward.
* Elder: "Please, leave us in peace. We have nothing of value to offer you."
* Jack: (chuckling evilly) "Then what good are you?"
Before anyone could react, Jack's right arm morphed into a cannon, teal energy swirling around it. Without hesitation, he unleashed a massive blast of Chaos energy, leveling half of the village in one devastating shot. The explosion sent villagers scattering in all directions, screams filling the air as they desperately tried to flee.
* Jack: (with a frenzied smile on his face) "That's right! Run, run, run! Let's see how far you can make it!"
With each blast, buildings crumbled, and the once vibrant village was reduced to ash. Jack floated above the carnage, his red and teal eyes gleaming with amusement. Yet, even as he reveled in the destruction, there was a growing sense of boredom gnawing at him.
He wanted more.
* Jack: "I've gotta bring the Freedom Fighters here! They're the only ones who will make things really interesting."
Meanwhile, in the medical bay, Rotor was checking Sailor Mars' vitals while Sailor Jupiter stood beside him. They had been monitoring her condition closely since she had been brought aboard, and now, finally, there was a glimmer of hope. Mars was beginning to stir!
* Jupiter: (gleefully astonished) "Hey, I think she's waking up!"
She wasted no time rushing out to tell the others, and soon the entire team gathered around Sailor Mars' bed. The raven-haired girl's eyes fluttered open, and as her vision cleared, she saw the familiar faces of her friends surrounding her. Sailor Moon was the first to move in, tears of relief streaming down her face as she clasped Mars' hand.
* Moon: (crying) "REI-CHAN! You're okay!"
Mars smiled weakly, her body still wracked with pain, but the warmth of her friends' presence gave her strength.
* Mars: (softly) "Y-Yes… I'm okay…"
There was a collective sigh of relief from the group. Even Silver, who had been quiet in the background, allowed himself a small smile.
* Jupiter: (tearing up and pointing to Silver in the back) "Silver saved you. He was the one who got you out of Conquering Storm's hands."
The white Hedgehog smiled wider and nodded. Mars turned her head toward Silver, her eyes glistening with tears.
* Mars: (voice breaking) "Thank you, Silver. Thank you so much…"
For the first time, the normally fierce and composed Warrior of Flames allowed herself to cry openly, her vulnerability on full display. She felt ashamed for being caught off guard and captured in the first place, and her tears carried that weight.
* Mars: (crying) "You saved my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you… I don't know what would've happened if... if you hadn't gotten me out of there..."
Venus stepped forward, rubbing her friend's head softly.
* Venus: "None of this is your fault, Rei-chan. Don't blame yourself. We're just glad you're here with us. We're all together again. We're finally all together again."
Elsewhere in the Sky Patrol, Sally is still sullen in her quarters, bound and rendered immobile. Knuckles enters quietly, his posture tense as he approaches his old friend. He's known Sally for over a decade, and yet, the person sitting before him now is almost unrecognizable.
* Knuckles: "Sal. We've gotta talk."
* Sally: (scowling, quietly) "What's there to talk about, Knuckles? You've already made your choice."
Her words cut deep, and Knuckles flinches.
* Knuckles: "Sally, it's not like that. You're... you're not yourself. I just want to help you."
At this, Sally's icy exterior cracks, and she breaks down, tears streaming down her face.
* Sally: (crying) "You want to help me?! You want to help me, Knuckles?! You stabbed me in the back! I'm your oldest friend! Why?! How?! How could you betray me like this?! Why did you turn against me when I needed you the most?!"
Her words hit him like a punch to the gut. He had always been there for Sally, through thick and thin, but now... he didn't know how to reach her.
* Knuckles: "Sal, I didn't betray you. We all want the same thing, to stop Eggman. But this... this isn't the way."
The Chipmunk's expression darkens once again, and her tears stop as quickly as they began. Her voice drops to a chilling whisper.
* Sally: "You can help me… when I have the HEAD of Eggman lying here at my feet. I want the head of that degenerate, malignant, treacherous demon BROUGHT TO ME HERE! CONGEALED IN ALL ITS EVIL BLOOD."
Knuckles takes a step back, horrified by the intensity of her words. The look in her unblinking eyes is one of pure, unbridled hatred, and he realizes that the Sally he once knew is slipping further and further away. He shakes his head slowly, then sorrowfully walks out.
And in their separate rooms, Usagi and Ami both sat deep in thought, each wrestling with their feelings about Sonic and each other. The past few days had been overwhelming, and the tension between both girls had been building, quietly simmering beneath the surface.
Ami sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers absentmindedly running through her short blue hair. Her heart was heavy with conflicting emotions. She had loved Sonic from afar for so long — since her childhood — and, after she had given up hope and had realistically attempted to move on, now that they had met face-to-face, those feelings had resurfaced with a force she hadn't anticipated. But there was also Usagi to consider, her best friend, who had suffered so much already. The bluenette thought about her mother, Dr. Mizuno, and what she would think of her falling for a Mobian of all people. Her mother was a woman of strict principles, a hardline traditional conservative, and Ami knew there would be a long battle for approval if her feelings for Sonic ever became known. But that wasn't what scared her the most. What frightened her the most was the possibility of Usagi being hurt. They had always been closest among the Senshi, practically sisters, and this... this situation could break that treasured bond.
Meanwhile, in the next room, Usagi lay curled up in her bed, tears running down her cheeks, hugging her pillow tightly. She had never felt more conflicted in her life. Sonic was so kind, brave, and so full of energy. Being around him gave her hope again, hope that love could find its way back into her heart, despite the hole that was left after Mamoru's death. But then there was Ami. Usagi had never expected her best friend to have feelings for the Hedgehog, but now that it was clear, she couldn't help but feel jealous. She had been the one to have a close connection with him, she was the one to share laughs and adventures as they traveled the world together. The thought of Ami — her sweet, gentle, brilliant friend — having the same feelings stirred emotions within her she didn't know how to process.
Both girls, sitting in their separate rooms, silently wondered: Could their friendship survive this?
