It was a nice day in the Inkwell Isles and Ember is once again visiting her human family. On this day, Ember was once again playing with her siblings while their mother Gwen was taking care of their newborn brother Noah.
The kids were in the living room with their toys along with Ember's demon kitten Umbra and her flying broomstick.
"So, how are you guys doing?" Ember asked.
"Good. Same as usual." Priscilla said.
Joy was playing with Umbra with her favorite feather toy. After a while, Umbra is laying in Joy's arms and purring.
"I love you Umbra." Joy said.
"Mew!" Umbra meowed.
Timothy petted Umbra.
"She's cute but wouldn't it be cool if we got a puppy?" Timothy asked.
"Why?" Priscilla asked.
"Dogs are fun, loyal and protective." Timothy said.
"Cats can be protective too. You saw Umbra and her powers." Ember said.
"Mew!" Umber meowed in agreement.
"Yeah, but she's a demon kitten. That's why she has powers." Priscilla pointed out.
"So what?" Ember asked.
"I love both kitties and puppies." Joy said as she snuggled Umbra.
Just then, their father Clarence entered the room.
"Hey kids, what's this I'm hearing about kitties and puppies?" Clarence asked as he grabbed the newspaper and sat down in his chair to read.
Timothy got up and ran up to his father and hopped on his lap.
"Papa! Can we get a puppy please?" Timothy asked.
"Tim, we already have our magic carpet, and Ember has her little kitty and broomstick. As far as I'm concerned, we have enough pets." Clarence said.
"Mew!" Umbra meowed.
"Also, Noah was born not too long ago so we're busy enough taking care of him." Clarence also pointed out.
"Ember takes care of Umbra and Broomy. Cerulean Bolt takes care of himself. What if I took care of our puppy?" Timothy asked.
"He does have a point." Priscilla interrupted.
"Yes, I take care of Umbra, but pets are a big responsibility. Father let me keep her under the condition that I am to take care of her. I have to feed her, give her water, play with her, clean her litter boxes," Ember pointed out.
"I could do the same thing for the puppy. Please papa, please?" Timothy asked, making cute eyes.
Clarence sighed.
"I'll talk to your mother and see what she says. But I can't promise anything." Clarence said.
"Oh, thank you papa! Thank you!" Timothy exclaimed and hugged his father.
A week later, Ember was once again with her human family along with Umbra and her broomstick. Their mother Gwen along with Clarence entered the living room.
"Kids, your mother's got something to say to you." Clarence announced.
The kid's attention focused on their mother.
"Your father talked to me about wanting a puppy. You know that Ember has her kitten and broomstick, and I have my magic carpet. But as you know, taking care of an animal pet is a big responsibility." Gwen explained.
The children nodded their heads. Just then, Cerulean Bolt flew in and circle Gwen.
"Yes, yes buddy. We were just talking about you." Gwen said, petting him.
Cerulean Bolt hugged Gwen.
"What do you think about having a puppy around here?" Gwen asked.
Cerulean Bolt flew around the living room then back at Gwen. He gave her a nod gesture.
"You really think so?" Gwen asked.
Gwen turned to the children.
"Well, I know a friend who currently has puppies we could go look at." Gwen finally said.
All four children cheered. Timothy ran up to his mother.
"Oh, thank you mama! Thank you!" Timothy thanked.
"But…" Gwen continued.
Timothy looked at his mother.
"If we do pick a puppy, that puppy will be your sole responsibility. I have enough on my hands taking care of Noah and your father working on various projects. Do you understand?" Gwen asked.
"Yes mama. I'll take good care of him." Timothy promised.
"Alright then." Gwen said.
Later, the family were in the car driving out into the countryside in Massachusetts until they finally reached a farm. They get out of the car and approached the front door. Timothy knocked and everyone waited.
Just then, an old farmer opened the door.
"Hey Carl." Gwen greeted.
"Hey there Gwen! How's life?" Carl asked.
"Good Carl." Gwen answered.
"How's your daddy doin'?" Carl asked.
"He's retired now and is living his golden years with mama. I know you and papa were old friends." Gwen answered.
"I understand you come to look at Buttermilk's new litter of puppies?" Carl asked.
"Yeah!" The children exclaimed excitedly.
"Well then, follow me everyone." Carl said.
He leads the Hopewell family to the barn. Inside, they noticed a golden retriever dog resting on blankets. In a separate pen, nine little puppies were playing.
"There they are." Carl said and pointed.
Joy squealed excitedly.
The four children ran up to the pen where the puppies are barking excitedly and jumping up.
"They're so cute!" Joy said excitedly.
"Yeah, they all are." Timothy agreed.
"But which one is the right one for us?" Priscilla asked.
"I learned that sometimes, the puppy choses you and you have to find that special connection just like I did with Umbra." Ember suggested.
Timothy looked and noticed one little puppy staring at him. He knelt down as the puppy approached him.
"Here son. This is that puppy's favorite toy." Carl said as he handed Timothy a squeaky toy.
SQUEAK!
Timothy squeaked the toy, making the puppy excited. He threw the toy and the puppy chased it, retrieved it and walked back to Timothy.
"You're fast like a little comet." Timothy complimented.
"Bark!" The puppy barked.
"I think this is the one." Timothy said, making his choice.
"I agree." Priscilla said as she petted the puppy.
"I love him!" Joy said as she petted him.
"I gotta admit, he is cute." Ember said, petting him.
Carl lifted the puppy out of the pen.
"Alrighty then, this is the puppy for you. Now remember, this little guy loves to run around so be sure to train him really good if you don't want him to run away." Carl advised.
"I will sir. I promise." Timothy promised.
"Alright then, I'll just hand your mama the paperwork of his medical records of checkups and shots and the rest." Carl said.
Gwen and Clarence paid Carl and signed the paperwork.
"What are you gonna name him kids?" Clarence asked.
"I think I like… Comet. He runs fast like a comet." Timothy announced.
"I like it." Priscilla agreed.
"Me too." Ember also agreed.
"Comet!" Joy exclaimed and snuggled the puppy.
"Alright then, Comet is all yours." Carl announced.
Clarence held a bag of puppy essentials of toys, dog leash, dog harness, food and water bowls, dog food and treats, waste bags and a dog crate.
They all get back in the car with Timothy holding Comet in his lap and drive back home. They return to their farm in the Inkwell Isles with Comet.
"Alright kids, get Comet's stuff set up. Ember, put Umbra in your room." Gwen instructed her kids as she took Noah upstairs to settle him for a nap.
The four kids helped set up the crate, the dog dishes, toys, dog food and treats and everything else. Ember quickly took Umbra upstairs into her room and closed the door.
"Comet, welcome to your new home!" Timothy exclaimed.
"Bark!" Comet barked and wandered around the house to explore.
Ember managed to separate Umbra from Comet in her bedroom. She knew that Umbra sensed another animal in the house.
"It's okay Umbra. I'll keep you safe." Ember assured her kitten.
"Mew!" Umbra meowed.
Just then, they hear Comet coming up the stairs with Timothy following. Umbra felt scared and ran to hide under Ember's bed.
"It's okay. He won't get you." Umbra soothed her.
Just then, she heard Comet barking behind Ember's door.
"Comet! Be quiet!" Ember yelled.
Timothy comes and carries Comet away from Ember's door.
"Sorry Em!" Timothy apologized.
Timothy carried Comet to his bedroom.
"This is my bedroom Comet. Don't worry, you can sleep in here with me. I'll have your crate moved in here." Timothy assured the puppy.
Comet sniffed around, studying his surroundings.
"Hey Tim! Why don't you put Comet in his harness and leash and take him outside?" Clarence called.
"Okay papa!" Timothy called.
Timothy grabbed the harness and leash and put them on Comet. He leads comet downstairs and takes Comet outside and lead him around the farm.
Meanwhile, Ember peeks out of her room.
"Is Comet gone?" Ember asked.
"Tim took Comet outside." Priscilla called.
Ember sighed as she opened the door, releasing Umbra back in the house. Ember runs back downstairs with Umbra.
"Poor Umbra's scared of Comet." Ember said.
"Well, it'll take some time, but Umbra will get braver as she starts to get used to him." Gwen said.
"Meow!" Umbra meowed and jumped with her wings into Gwen's arms.
"Won't you little kitty?" Gwen said.
Umbra purred in Gwen's arms.
Just then, a puff of smoke appeared, and the Devil appeared before them.
"Oh, hello father." Ember said.
"There you are. Time to go home dear." The Devil said as he took her hand.
"Umbra! Broomy!" Ember called.
Umbra jumped out of Gwen's arms and the broomstick flew to the Devil up in Ember's arms.
Just then, Timothy came back in the house with Comet and removed his harness and leash. Comet barked and ran at the Devil and jumped at his legs.
"EW! What is that thing?!" The Devil asked in disgust.
"That's our new puppy Devil. His name is Comet." Timothy introduced.
"Ugh. So slobbery and noisy!" The Devil groaned.
"He's just a puppy. We just brought him home." Gwen sternly explained.
"Oh, brilliant idea Gwen." The Devil said sarcastically to her unamusement.
Just then, he felt a familiar kid hugging his leg. He sighed and looked at Joy.
"Um, Joy?" The Devil asked.
Joy looked up at the Devil with a smile.
"Do you remember that little talk we had about personal bubbles?" The Devil calmly asked.
"Uh…" Joy said, trying to remember.
"Everyone has a personal bubble. Your mommy has a bubble. Ember has a bubble. I have a bubble, and you have a bubble. We need to respect those bubbles and not enter someone else's bubble. Understand?" The Devil reminded her as he tried to keep his composure as a father.
Joy thought about and happily nodded.
"Good girl." The Devil complimented.
But Joy made a pop sound and hugged the Devil's leg again to his annoyance. Gwen slightly snickered.
"You'll have to do better than that." Gwen said and smirked.
The Devil gave Gwen an unamused look as Gwen had Joy release his leg.
"Joy, that's enough." Gwen said and took her hand and led her away.
"Aw mommy…" Joy said disappointingly as the Devil smirked.
The Devil wrapped his arm around Ember, tapped his pitchfork and disappeared back to Hell.
Umbra jumped from Ember's arms and settled in one of her napping spots.
"Why did they bring that little mongrel home?" The Devil asked.
"It was Timothy's idea. He wanted a puppy, so Priscilla and Joy agreed." Ember answered.
"Including you?" The Devil asked.
"He's cute, but I was concerned for Umbra since she's never been around dogs." Ember said as they looked at Umbra sleeping.
"Well, keep your kitty away from that little mongrel. We don't want her to accidentally blow that little puppy to ashes." The Devil instructed.
"Don't worry father. I won't let her." Ember promised.
"Good. Now, let's go train." The Devil said.
The Devil took Ember back to the arena for more training.
Back at the farm, Timothy keeps playing with Comet with his squeaky toy. Priscilla walked up to Comet.
"Are we gonna teach him tricks?" Priscilla asked.
"Yeah, but how do we do that?" Timothy asked.
"May I suggest using treats to motivate him? It would give him a very good reason to listen." Gwen suggested.
"Thanks mama." Priscilla thanked as she grabbed a box of dog treats.
"No problem." Gwen said as she was changing Noah's diaper.
Priscilla, Timothy and Joy get to work with training Comet. They start with the 'sit' trick. Comet doesn't comply until Timothy raised a treat in his hand. Comet was eager to have the treat.
"Sit!" Timothy said.
Comet finally sat down.
"Good boy!" Timothy said and gave Comet a treat.
They kept up with his training with 'coming when called', 'down', 'roll over', 'shake' and 'play dead' tricks.
Later, the Hopewells have dinner together and Timothy feeds Comet. After dinner, they all gather in the family room to watch TV together. Priscilla rubs Comet's belly, to his enjoyment.
"You know, having a dog around may not be so bad after all." Priscilla said.
"Yeah! I love you Comet." Joy agreed and petted his belly.
"Just remember to keep up with taking care of him every day." Gwen reminded her children.
"We will mama." Timothy promised.
That night, Timothy put Comet in his crate in his bedroom and went to bed. In the middle of the night, Comet was whimpering, making Timothy wake up.
"What? What's wrong Comet?" Timothy asked.
Comet was pacing around the crate.
"Oh." Timothy said, now realizing what Comet wants.
He puts the harness and leash on Comet, go downstairs and takes Comet outside to do his business. Just then, Clarence in his bathrobe comes outside.
"Son, what are you doing up? It's late." Clarence asked.
"Sorry papa. But Comet had to go out." Timothy explained.
"Oh. Good job son." Clarence said, praising his son.
"Thanks papa." Timothy thanked.
"Just remember to take him out next time before bedtime. Okay?" Clarence asked.
"Yes, papa." Timothy agreed and yawned.
Clarence takes Timothy and Comet back inside and back to bed.
The next morning, Timothy lets Comet out of the crate and join the rest of the family downstairs for breakfast. Timothy once again feeds Comet and joins his family to eat breakfast.
"So, what are you gonna do with Comet today?" Gwen asked as she was feeding Noah.
"Well, I was thinking of taking him for a walk and play in the yard." Timothy said.
"That's a good idea. Just remember to keep him on a leash and pick up after him, okay?" Gwen reminded him.
"Yes mama." Timothy answered.
"Oh, and make sure he's not chewing on anything." Gwen added.
"Yes mama." Timothy answered.
Just then, they heard Joy shrieking. Everyone got up and ran into the family room where Joy was holding her rainbow teddy bear all chewed up.
"My Teddy!" Joy cried.
"Uh oh…" Timothy said worryingly.
"Tim, I thought you made sure Comet didn't chew on anything." Gwen scolded.
"I thought I did! Joy left her Teddy out!" Timothy exclaimed and tried to pin the blame on Joy.
"No! I left my Teddy on the chair!" Joy yelled and continued crying.
Gwen lifted Joy up in her arms and let her cry in her chest.
"Tim, let this be another thing to teach Comet. Not to chew on anything but his toys." Gwen scolded as she took Joy away and magically fixed her teddy bear.
"Priscilla, cheer up your sister while I give Noah his bath." Gwen instructed.
"Yes mama." Priscilla answered.
Gwen took Noah upstairs to give him a bath while Priscilla tried to make Joy happy to get her to stop crying.
Timothy felt guilty for not watching Comet closely and sat on the floor while Comet chewed on a rope toy.
"I'm sorry Comet. I should've watched you more carefully." Timothy apologized.
Clarence came in and sat down next to his son.
"You know son, while it's true you should've watched him closely; it's okay to make mistakes." Clarence said.
"Really?" Timothy asked.
"Your cup uncles weren't perfect. Did you know they once accidentally left the front door open, and a crazy rat named Werner Werman entered and tried to take over the cottage with a little soup-can tank?" Clarence asked.
"No, I didn't know that." Timothy answered.
"Well, they tried everything to get rid of him, but nothing worked until your Elder Kettle stepped up and outsmarted the rat, saving your uncles but the cottage ended up blown up." Clarence finished the story.
"And mama had to restore the cottage again." Timothy said, figuring it out.
"Yep. She always had to clean up your uncle's messes." Clarence said.
"Oh. That had to be frustrating." Timothy said.
"Yeah. But she wants you to take responsibility for Comet as she took responsibility for your uncles. All you need to do is learn from your mistakes like she did." Clarence advised.
Timothy sighed as Comet came up to him with a toy.
"You're right papa. I gotta train him." Timothy admitted.
"That's my boy. Why don't you apologize to Joy first?" Clarence suggested.
"Okay." Timothy said.
Clarence and Timothy enter the kitchen where Priscilla and Joy were sitting at the table.
"Joy, I'm sorry Comet chewed your teddy and tried blaming you. It won't happen again." Timothy apologized.
Joy wiped her tears as Priscilla brushed her hair.
"It's okay Timmy." Joy answered, forgiving him.
Timothy hugged Joy.
"Wanna play outside with Comet?" Timothy asked.
"Yeah!" Joy agreed.
Timothy and Joy take Comet outside and play fetch with him. Gwen comes downstairs to her husband.
"I'm sorry love. I overreacted and I just…" Gwen tried to apologize until Clarence cut his wife off.
"It's okay honey. I talked to him. I told him the story of that time Cuphead and Mugman accidentally let Werner Werman in the cottage." Clarence explained.
"Oh… him. I'll never forget the time he tricked me into getting a cat to leave house." Gwen facepalmed, wincing at the memory.
"I helped Tim understand how you cleaned up their messes as he has to clean up Comet's messes." Clarence explained.
"Yeah. I did have to clean up their messes all the time. They got into all kinds of trouble." Gwen said, remembering the memories.
"Timothy's still young. He's bound to make mistakes like we all do. He also needs to learn to take responsibility. He just apologized to Joy and now they're playing outside with Comet." Clarence said.
"Yeah, you're right. I guess I sometimes sound like my father. And you know how hard he was on me. I promised myself I'd never be like him. I guess not." Gwen said.
"Honey, you're not perfect. I'm not perfect but it's okay." Clarence assured her.
"I suppose so." Gwen agreed and both kissed.
Meanwhile, Timothy and Joy were still playing with Comet as Priscilla came outside. Comet leapt on Timothy's chest on the grass and licked his face as he laughed.
"Okay Comet! Okay!" Timothy said as he lifted Comet off him.
Just then, Ember appeared in front of them with Umbra and her broomstick as she leapt out of her arms.
"Hey guys!" Ember greeted.
"Hey sis." Priscilla said and both hugged.
Just then, Comet approached the demon kitten. Umbra hissed and showed her sharp claws, scaring him away.
"Umbra don't barbeque him. He just wants to meet you." Ember said.
Umbra looked at Comet whimpering as he laid down on the grass. Umbra worked up a little courage and slowly approached Comet, sniffing him as the four children watched.
Umbra sniffed Comet's face as he wagged his tail happily.
Suddenly, Umbra started licking Comet's face, to the children's joy.
"Mama! Papa! Get over here!" Priscilla called.
Gwen and Clarence approached the children and are shocked at what they were seeing.
"Wow. She's gotten braver." Gwen said amazed.
Umbra started chasing Comet's tail like it was a cat toy. The family watched as Comet and Umbra started playing with each other until they laid down on the grass with each other.
"Aww!" Everyone said.
Suddenly without warning, a couple of cherry bombs were thrown at the family.
BOOM! BOOM!
The children screamed and ran toward the house until something shot forks at them, trapping them on the wall of the house.
"KIDS!" Clarence fearfully exclaimed.
Gwen got out her ink pen.
"Who did that?! Who's there?!" Gwen angrily yelled.
"Guten tag." A familiar voice said.
Gwen's eyes widened and looked down at a familiar soup-can tank with a cannon pointed at her children.
"Did you miss me human?" Werner said with a smirk.
"Honestly, no. You picked a bad time showing your ugly little face to me again!" Gwen angrily said, ready to attack.
Werner jumped into his cannon and was shot out toward the trapped children. He landed on a fork between Timothy and Joy. He quickly stuffed each a stick of dynamite in their mouths and did the same thing with Ember and Priscilla.
"Uh! Uh! Uh! I'm gonna give you two choices. Von, your precious farm. Two, your precious children. Vhich one vill it be?" Werner said as he prepared to light the dynamite in Timothy and Joy's mouths as they screamed.
Gwen grew furious when suddenly without warning, Umbra pounced on Werner to the ground as she hissed.
"Uh oh! Katzen!" Werner exclaimed.
Werner squirted water in Umbra's eyes, making her yowl. He attempted to escape when suddenly, he is grabbed in Comet's jaws.
"Uh oh! Hund!" Werner exclaimed.
Comet growled and shook Werner like a chew toy. Werner threw pepper at his nose, making Comet sneeze.
"ACHOO!"
Werner was spat out and makes a retreat to his soup-can tank. He attempts attack the children when Umbra leapt in front on him, growling at him.
"Vhat are you gonna do katzen?" Werner tauntingly asked.
With no hesitation, Umbra breathed her flamethrower attack at Werner, barbequing him to a black crisp.
"OH HIMMEL!" Werner fearfully exclaimed.
Umbra and Comet growled and prepared to attack again.
"RETREAT!" Werner screamed.
He attempts to get away when Comet quickly ran and caught the soup-can tank in his mouth.
"Comet! Bring him here!" Gwen called.
Comet ran up to Gwen and dropped the soup-can tank with Werner inside in her hand.
"Good boy Comet." Gwen complimented and petted him.
Meanwhile, Clarence freed the children, pulling out the forks and the dynamite from their mouths.
"As for you, you miserable vermin, you once threatened my brothers and now you threatened my children. I'm gonna make doubly sure you will never come near me or my family ever again!" Gwen furiously warned, making Werner gulp in fear.
Gwen gripped the soup-can tank and threw him away and used her ink pen and created a laser beam and shot him as far away as she could. Gwen sighed of relief as her children hugged her. Joy jumped into Gwen's arms
"Mommy!" Joy cried.
"It's okay, sweetie. You're safe now." Gwen soothed her.
"Mama! You saved us!" Priscilla said.
"It wasn't just mama. It was Umbra and Comet working together." Timothy said.
The family looked at the puppy and kitten as they both licked each other, finally becoming friends.
"Aww!" The family said.
"They're finally best friends." Ember said.
"I'm so glad you're all okay." Clarence said as he hugged his children.
Later inside the house, the family had dinner together then joined together in the family room to watch TV. Comet and Umbra were both sleeping together on his dog bed. Joy happily petted both puppy and kitten.
"I'm so happy they're friends." Joy said.
"Me too. Father had his doubts of them being friends, but he was wrong." Ember agreed.
"I figured that too dear." Gwen agreed as she snuggled Noah in her arms.
Just then, a puff of smoke appeared, and the Devil appeared in the family room.
"Ember! Are you alright? Are you hurt?" The Devil fearfully exclaimed as he checked Ember's body for injuries.
"No father, I'm okay. We're all okay." Ember assured him.
"But I heard a little military rat threatened you all earlier!" The Devil said.
"Yeah, but Comet and Umbra worked together and saved us. Then mama got rid of him." Timothy explained.
The Devil looked at Comet and Umbra sleeping together and he is shocked.
"What the? They're friends?" The Devil asked shockingly.
"Yes father. If it weren't for them, who knows what could've happened." Ember said as she hugged her father.
"I'm so happy you're safe." The Devil said.
Gwen was amazed how the Devil was very concerned for their daughter's well-being.
The Devil looked at Gwen.
"Gwen, I… I don't know what to say." The Devil admitted.
"You're welcome. Of course, you'd have done the same for the other children." Gwen said.
The Devil looked at Priscilla, Timothy, Joy and Noah.
"Oh, yes. Yes, I would." The Devil quickly said as Gwen shook her head, knowing he had a soft spot for the other children.
Just then, he noticed the TV and a football game was on.
"Ooh! The game's on! Who's playing?" The Devil asked.
"The Baltimore Colts are playing against the New York Yanks." Clarence answered.
"Ooh! Sweet!" The Devil exclaimed.
He tapped his pitchfork, a recliner appears and sat down to watch the game with the family. Umbra purred as Comet wagged his tail.
Gwen was happy things have worked out in the end with Comet as their new addition to the family and was on the path to making peace with the Devil.
