It had been two weeks since Jay's family had learned the big news, and the excitement hadn't died down. If anything, it had amplified, with Jay's mom and Bela texting daily with baby name ideas, nursery themes, and unsolicited parenting advice.
Sam sat in the living room of the B , laptop open on her lap as she tried to research cribs. The ghosts, of course, hovered nearby, chiming in with their own thoughts.
"Why are there so many crib options?" Sam groaned. "Convertible, non-convertible, eco-friendly, adjustable mattress heights—this is like shopping for a car."
"Back in my day, a baby slept in a bassinet woven by the family servants," Hetty said, folding her hands primly. "None of this modern nonsense."
"Pretty sure we just had a basket," Flower added, lounging nearby. "It was, like, simple and sustainable, man."
"Basket? Bah!" Thor exclaimed. "Viking babies slept on ship decks, under the stars. Tough from birth!"
Trevor smirked. "Bet they were real well-rested after that."
Jay walked in, carrying a notebook filled with scribbles. He kissed Sam on the head and sat down beside her. "Okay, I've narrowed it down to my top five names," he said proudly.
Sam raised an eyebrow. "Your top five?"
"Yeah," he replied, flipping open the notebook. "Hear me out: Ethan, Asha,Calypso, Kieran, Caspian and Raj."
The ghosts immediately broke into chatter.
"I think Trevor would be a really good name" Trevor chimed in
Sam giggled "Trevor we are not naming our kid after you"
"Oh heck no we are not naming our kid after no pants! No offense Trevor" Jay chimed in telling Sam and the corner of the room he assumed Trevor was standing at.
"None taken" Trevor said sassy
"Well I like Caspian! That has a noble ring to it," Pete said, adjusting his glasses.
"Calypso is nice, but it's no 'Alberta,'" Alberta remarked, preening a bit.
"Thor Junior is still better," Thor insisted, arms crossed.
Sam shook her head, laughing. "You know, I haven't even thought about names yet. Every time I try, I just get overwhelmed."
"That's because you need to feel the energy of the baby," Flower said, gesturing toward Sam's stomach. "Close your eyes, Sam. Breathe. What does the baby's spirit tell you?"
Jay tilted his head. "What's happening? Did Flower suggest some hippie spiritual thing to ask the baby what they're name is going to be?
" wow Jay you are catching on fast, Flower did suggest that, But the baby tells me that this is ridiculous," Sam replied, rolling her eyes but smiling.
"Sam!" Bela's voice rang out as she stepped through the door, holding a box of donuts. "I brought snacks! Oh, and I've got a list of names, too."
Sam groaned playfully. "You, too?"
Bela plopped down on the couch and handed the donuts to Jay. "Okay, hear me out: Mira, Avi, Kaia, and—this one's my favorite—Rishi."
"Good names," Jay said, nodding thoughtfully.
"Do you all have lists?" Sam asked, eyeing her husband and sister-in-law.
Jay's mom called a moment later, as if on cue. Jay put her on speakerphone.
"Hi, Mom," he said.
"Hello, dears!" his mom's warm voice greeted them. "I've been thinking about names and wanted to run a few by you. What do you think of Priya? Or Arjun? Oh, and I came across a lovely name—Amara. Isn't that beautiful?"
"Great names, Mom," Jay replied diplomatically, though he was beginning to feel the pressure.
The ghosts, meanwhile, were growing louder in their own debates.
"I still think Elizabeth is perfect," Hetty huffed.
"No one names their kid Thor anymore," Trevor quipped. "Though, hey, you could bring it back."
"Alberta is classic and timeless," Alberta repeated, tapping her foot impatiently.
Sam finally clapped her hands to get everyone's attention—human and ghost alike. "Okay, stop! Everyone has opinions, and I appreciate that. But can we all agree to just take a breather? This baby isn't even here yet!"
Jay raised his hands in surrender. "You're right. We're getting ahead of ourselves."
Bela grinned. "Fine, but don't think I'm giving up. I'll just wait until the baby shower."
Jay's mom, still on speaker, chimed in. "You're absolutely right, Sam. I'll hold off… for now. But you can expect an email with a few ideas later!"
Sam groaned again, but there was laughter in her voice.
Later that evening, after the house had quieted down, Sam and Jay sat together on the couch.
"You know," Sam said softly, "I think we should pick a name that means something to us. Something that feels like… us."
Jay nodded, slipping his arm around her. "Agreed. No lists, no pressure. Just something we both love."
In the background, the ghosts debated late into the night, but Sam tuned them out, while she and Jay stay silent, content in their shared moment of peace. They didn't have all the answers yet, but they had each other—and that was enough.
