Brian O'Connor pulled his Skyline smoothly into the driveway of their new home, the low rumble of the engine cutting off as he shut it down. From the backseat, his sixteen-year-old daughters, Izzy and Abby, buzzed with excitement, straining against their seatbelts to get a better look at the house.
"Daddy, open the door!" Abby demanded with urgency, wriggling against her seatbelt. "We're being squished!"
Brian chuckled, glancing at the rearview mirror to spot the culprit: J, their massive black-and-brown Great Dane, comfortably wedged between the girls. His giant head rested on Abby's shoulder, his prong and studded leather collars giving him an imposing appearance. But J was a gentle giant, all bark and no bite. Beside him, Missy and Sissy, their sleek Belgian Malinois protection dogs, sat attentively. Their sharp, black-and-brown coats gleamed under their gem-studded white biothane collars, exuding a quiet intensity that balanced their loyalty and precision.
"Alright, alright!" Brian laughed, unlocking the car.
The girls spilled out, J bounding after them with eager strides, sniffing the new yard. Missy and Sissy followed, their sharp eyes scanning their unfamiliar surroundings, always alert.
"Dad, can we go for a run?" Izzy asked, bouncing on her heels. Abby nodded, just as eager.
"Please, Dad! We'll take Missy and Sissy with us," Abby added, already reaching for their leads.
Brian waved them off with a smile. "Go ahead, but stick to this block. I'll need you back soon to help with the bags."
With that, the girls jogged off, the Malinois trotting at their sides in perfect sync. Brian's gaze lingered on them briefly before shifting to J, who happily explored every corner of the yard without a care. Smiling, Brian turned to the car, grabbing for a heavy bag in the trunk.
Eight months pregnant didn't stop him, but it made everything slower. As he lifted the bag, he overbalanced, stumbling backward and landing on the grass with an unceremonious thud. The impact jolted through him, leaving him momentarily winded. His doctor's warnings about strain flashed in his mind, but he hadn't expected something so minor to knock him off his feet.
"Hey, are you alright?" a voice called out.
Looking up, Brian spotted two men approaching from the sidewalk. Recognition clicked—new neighbors, Dom and Vince.
"Need a hand?" Dom asked, his brow creased in concern.
Brian started to shake his head, glancing down the street. "My girls are coming back; they'll help me. I'm fine."
But Dom and Vince exchanged a knowing look and stepped closer. "We've got you," Dom insisted, extending a hand.
Before Brian could respond, the sound of paws thundering against pavement drew everyone's attention. Missy and Sissy bolted back, barking and growling as they placed themselves protectively between Brian and the approaching men. Their sharp, disciplined movements left no doubt—they were ready to defend their handler.
"Izzy, Abby!" Brian called, keeping his voice even. "It's fine—call them off. These guys are just helping."
Izzy caught up quickly, issuing a crisp command in German. Instantly, the Malinois stood down, returning to her side with the same discipline they'd shown moments before.
Abby rushed to Brian's side, dropping to her knees. "Dad, are you okay?"
With Vince's help, Brian stood, brushing himself off as he steadied his breath. "Thanks," he said, his voice steady as he glanced at the two men.
Dom smiled warmly. "No problem. You're moving in, right?"
Brian nodded, gesturing to the house. "Yeah, just got here."
"Well, welcome to the neighborhood," Dom said, his grin widening. "We're having a barbecue later. You and your girls should stop by."
Abby glanced at her dad, then back at Dom with a small smile. "Can we bring the dogs? They're trained and won't cause trouble."
Dom chuckled. "Absolutely. Just warn us if they eat burgers," he teased.
Brian laughed, extending his hand. "Deal. I'm Brian, and these are my daughters, Izzy and Abby."
Dom and Vince introduced themselves, shaking hands with Brian and exchanging brief nods with the girls, who held their usual cool, guarded demeanor. With J trotting happily at their side and the Malinois walking in perfect tandem, they headed next door, where more neighbors had gathered.
As they approached, friendly faces greeted them: Mia, Letty, Leon, and Jesse introduced themselves, while Dom's twin daughters, Daisy and Bailey, sized up Izzy and Abby with the same cool, appraising looks they received in return. Despite the guarded introduction, the barbecue was warm and inviting, the aroma of grilled food mingling with the easy laughter of their new neighbors.
Settling into the scene, Brian relaxed for the first time that day, flanked by his loyal dogs and his spirited daughters, ready to embrace this new chapter.
