Brian stifled a yawn, leaning back in his chair as he stretched out his aching back. The long day—and his pregnancy—were catching up to him, no matter how much he tried to ignore it. His eyes felt heavy, and he was starting to lose the battle against sleep.
Abby noticed first, her concern immediate. "Dad, if you're tired, we should head home," she said firmly, her caring frown making it clear she wouldn't take no for an answer. "You've been going non-stop all day, and you need to rest."
Dom caught her words and quickly backed her up. "She's right, Brian. No need to push yourself. We've got plenty of time to hang out later—don't overdo it tonight."
Brian hesitated, not wanting to cut the evening short, but another yawn escaped before he could stop it. "Honestly? I'm beat," he admitted with a small, self-deprecating smile. "If I stay much longer, I'll probably fall asleep right here."
Vince waved him off, smiling. "No worries, man. You've got to take care of yourself. We'll catch up again soon."
Brian nodded, grateful for the understanding. He turned to Izzy, who was already standing, ready to help him. She stepped forward, steadying him as he rose from the chair, her grip firm yet gentle.
"I've got you, Dad," she said confidently, her tone reassuring as she adjusted to his pace. "Let's get you home."
Abby moved to grab J's leash, giving the big dog a gentle pat on the head. "Alright, J, time to take Dad home," she murmured. The dog's tail wagged as he fell into step beside her, his frame massive but obedient.
Missy and Sissy, always alert, stayed close to Izzy, their leashes in hand, their calm demeanor matching Brian's slower steps. Together, they moved toward the door, a quiet but efficient team.
Brian paused to glance back at Dom and Vince. "Thanks again for tonight. I really appreciate the warm welcome."
Dom smiled, giving him a wave. "Anytime, Brian. Don't be a stranger."
The group exchanged a few more goodbyes before Brian and his daughters made their way home. Izzy stayed close, subtly supporting her father whenever his steps faltered, while Abby kept pace with J, glancing back now and then to ensure everything was alright.
Once they reached their front door, Izzy unlocked it and stepped aside, letting Abby guide J inside. The dog's nails clicked softly against the floor as he made his way to the living room, settling in with a contented sigh. Abby turned back, ensuring Izzy and Brian were following.
"Come on, Dad," Izzy urged gently, her hand still steady on his arm. "Let's get you settled."
Brian let out a sigh of relief as they stepped into the cool, quiet house. He sank onto the couch, leaning back with a weary but grateful smile. "Thanks, girls," he said, looking between them. "I couldn't have managed today without you."
Abby smiled as she set J's leash on the side table and took a seat next to her dad. She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. "You've done enough for today, Dad. Rest."
Izzy nodded firmly. "You're eight months along, Dad. You don't need to push yourself."
Brian chuckled softly. "I'm still getting used to the idea of slowing down. You two have been lifesavers today."
Missy and Sissy settled at his feet, their watchful eyes never leaving him. Brian leaned down to give them a quick pat, appreciating their loyalty.
Izzy noticed him shift, the discomfort evident in his face. "Your back's acting up again, isn't it?" she asked, her tone more determined than concerned. She moved behind him, her hands already working on the tension in his shoulders.
Brian sighed and nodded. "Yeah, it's been a long day."
As Izzy worked, Abby chimed in. "Take it easy tomorrow, Dad. We've got everything covered."
Brian smiled, warmth in his gaze. "Thanks, girls. You're right—I'll try."
Later, as he made his way upstairs to bed, he paused at the top of the stairs to glance back. "Goodnight, girls. Love you."
"Love you too, Dad," they called back in unison, smiling as they watched him disappear into his room.
The next morning, Brian woke to sunlight streaming through the windows and the smell of breakfast wafting from downstairs. Stretching out the stiffness in his limbs, he made his way to the kitchen, where Izzy and Abby were already seated, plates of food spread across the table.
Brian grinned. "Morning, girls. What's all this?"
"Just your favorites," Abby said brightly. "You deserve it."
Izzy motioned for him to sit. "Pancakes, eggs, fruit—everything you love."
Brian took a seat, his heart full. "You two are amazing. Thanks for this."
As they ate, the dogs rustled in the other room, waiting for their walk. Abby glanced toward the noise. "We'll handle them, Dad. You just relax."
Brian leaned back with a smile. "I don't know what I'd do without you two."
The girls headed out with the dogs, leaving Brian to enjoy his breakfast in peace. For the first time in weeks, he felt truly rested and ready to face the day, knowing he wasn't in this alone.
