This one is gonna be a doozy of a long chapter.
Guide for this chapter and future ones:
Tom Cavanagh's Thawne will continue to be called "Thawne."
Matt Letcher's Thawne aka Flashpoint Thawne will be called "Eobard."
RIP Tony Todd, aka the Voice of Zoom on the show and has played Worf's brother, Kurn on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (and older Jake Sisko on an episode of the latter show). Horror fans may know him from the original "Candyman" film. He's also voiced Darkseid in some of the direct to video DC films (including the Lego ones) and last year, he did a great job voicing Venom in the PlayStation 5 video game, "Spider-Man 2."
Chapter 13
Earlier today, Cecile was at the bank, when robbers arrived. She discovered a new power, to see the emotional auras of people and transfer the emotions of some people to others, which she did to subdue the robbers. She's now in the med lab being examined by Chester as Barry, Allegra, and Peter are there to learn what happened.
"Fiery Frances Sumner." Chester exclaimed. "Still, according to Gideon, your empathetic capacity is up 1,000 percent. Your brain just got supercharged."
"Usually, when I sense a wave of fear and panic, it just hits me like a train." Cecile explained to the team. "Except this time, when my powers kicked in, I barely broke a sweat."
"Which is all very badass, but is anyone else wondering how the heck this happened?" Allegra asked.
"Well, I mean, I didn't know. My powers have changed before, like when Jenna was born. Maybe it's just natural."
"It's not unheard of." Peter tells them. "When Miles first got his powers, he had the same as mine, but shortly after training him, we discovered that he could turn invisible. Months later, we discovered that he could send electric shocks by touching things and people. Hell, it took Clark decades to discover all of his powers after being exposed to our yellow sun for so long. First was super strength and speed, then x-ray vision, heat vision, super hearing, super breath, and finally, flight."
"It's possible that you, Peter, and Chester are right, but let's run some more tests just to make sure." Barry says.
Cecile's powers start to detect Barry's emotions after what he just said.
"Barry?" She asks.
"Hm?"
"I can feel a massive wave of concern wash over you. You're worried about something. It's way more than just me."
Barry is reluctant to tell them, but because of Cecile, he relents. "It's…the new speedster I'm training, Meena Dhawan during our last training session, I got struck by her artificial lightning. Now it was an accident, but when it hit me, it collided with my lightning and it set off some kind of biokinetic chemical reaction."
"Okay, accidental attacks, artificial speed. It's she about to go all Spock Flash?" Allegra asked.
Peter assumed she was talking about the events that he read in Team Flash's history of the artificial Speed Force that made Barry very smart, emotionless, and acting in a way that he considered logical, hence the comparison to "Star Trek" character, Mr. Spock. Of course, the artificial Speed Force would never have come to be if Oliver hadn't made Barry time travel during Crisis. It was at times like that that he was grateful that Barry died in the Crisis and was replaced by Daisy Johnson and that the means of time travel that the Paragons used was the Quantum Realm.
"No, I don't think so." Barry reassured Allegra. "I mean, Meena did find a way to generate her own speed source artificially, but it's not affecting her like it did me. I mean, her emotions seem fine."
"So it's just her powers that are weird?" Peter asked and Barry nodded. "Maybe you and I should go to Fast Track Labs and check out her generator and see how it really works?"
"Yeah, I think we should."
The next day, Peter and Barry manage to get an appointment to meet with Meena at Fast Track Labs.
"Barry Allen and Peter Parker?" Meena asked the two, who were sitting on a couch in the lobby, waiting.
"Yeah. I'm Barry, he's Peter." Barry introduced as they each took a turn shaking her hand.
"Hello." Peter said, greeting her.
"Sorry to keep you both waiting." She apologized
"No, it's perfectly fine."
"How can I help you?"
"Yeah, actually, we are here on behalf of a mutual friend of ours…" Barry explained, much to Meena's confusion. So, Barry clarified without revealing to the other employees nearby. "...who likes to run…fast."
"Oh."
"Yes. Our friend was hoping that Peter and I could take a look at your-your special project. He thinks it'd be a good idea to get some extra set of eyes on this, just to make sure everything's safe."
"I understand. And he's right. I could use some more scientific eyes on all this right now." She said in agreement. "Follow me."
She then lead the two to a laboratory in the building with a chamber device in the middle.
"There she is, my pride and joy." Meena told them with…well, pride.
"Wow," Barry exclaimed in amazement before asking, "Is that an oscillation chamber?"
"It's a biometric lightning oscillation chamber, actually."
"A B.L.O.C.?*" Peter jested.
*Sounds like "block."
"Spot on Mr. Parker, that's what we call it." Meena replied, before explaining how it worked. "It's built with quantum computing to remotely harness lightning from the Earth's upper atmosphere and turn it into artificial speed."
"This equipment is decades ahead of any other lab." Barry said as he geeked out at the machine.
Even P.A.R.K.E.R. Industries didn't have equipment this advanced before I was abducted. Peter noted mentally.
"Oh, even yours I hope?" Meena asked in curiosity. She then laughs at the pleasure of hearing Barry's compliment of the B.L.O.C. "But I can't take full credit for all this innovation. Sure, I can handle the physics, but my colleague is more familiar with the nuts and bolts." She then hears that someone else is in the room. She turns to see it's the colleague that she was boasting. "Ah, there he is."
Barry and Peter's smiles faltered at the sight of him. The man walks down stairs from an upper level of the lab, walking towards Meena and the heroes in the civilian identities. Barry and Peter recognized him, despite dressed like a scientist with a noticeable yellow tie. Though for Peter, the last time was roughly 12 years ago. The same day that Eddie killed himself to defeat the Reverse-Flash and the day of the singularity, which Ronnie stopped (which caused him to become Deathstorm and Frost killed).
May 2015
Peter watches in shock as Wells turns into an older man with blonde hair revealing to be the real Eobard Thawne.
"I controlled your lives for so long. How are you gonna do without me?" Thawne asks before he lets out a nightmarish scream as he completely vanishes.
March 2022
It was him. The same man who disguised himself as Wells for over a decade.
"Barry Allen, Peter Parker, meet the man who built this machine." Meena introduced.
"Eobard Thawne." He said as he had his hand extended to shake theirs. No anger or negative emotions showing. "Nice to meet you Barry Allen." After a few seconds of shock and confusion, Barry accepts the hand shake. After shaking Barry's hand, he turns to Peter. "Peter Parker." He also greets with his hand extended towards Peter, who also accepts it.
It confused both of the heroes as to how he was here. But what really surprised Peter is that his Spider-sense was not tingling.
"Um, hi." Peter said awkwardly.
"Thawne?" Barry asked in confusion.
"I'm Chief of Engineering here at Fast Track Laboratories."
"Eobard here is our only employee who knows the truth of this project while I'm still perfecting it. And Barry and Peter here are friends of The Flash." Meena explained to them.
"Really?" Eobard said, surprised to hear that.
"Yeah, you know The Flash, don't you?" Barry asked, suspicious that Eobard is planning something and using Meena as a pawn.
Eobard and Meena laugh nervously at Barry's question and the manner in which he phrased it.
"No I-" Eobard started to reply.
"Do you two-have you met before?" Meena asked Barry and Eobard.
"No, I mean, I don't-I didn't think so." Eobard stammered. "But, my memory is a little hazy."
"Yeah, um, Eobard suffers from a rare form of retrograde amnesia." Meena explained to the visitors.
"You're kidding." Barry replied in disbelief.
"I just-I have trouble accessing memories connected to my personal life, you know." Eobard explained. "Anything over a year ago, all I get are occasional flashes."
Peter wondered if this wasn't a version of Eobard Thawne from this world or timeline, but is from a different timeline and got stranded in this timeline like he and Wade did. Though, with Eddie and Iris happily married in his timeline, he doubted that this Thawne was from his.
Meena's phone vibrates, so she excuses herself to go to a part of the room to answer it.
"I'm supposed to believe that you don't remember who you are or where you're from?" Barry asked, still not believing him. "What the hell are you doing here? Why'd you build this thing?"
"Barry, can we talk in private, right now?" Peter asked, nervous about what Barry was going to do.
"Not, right now." Barry tells Peter, not taking his eyes off Eobard. "Answer the question."
"Because Meena asked me to." Eobard replied, not wanting to get in any sort of trouble.
"Her lightning is like nothing I've ever seen before, I guess that's your doing, isn't it?"
"I assure you, the B.L.O.C. is perfectly safe."
"But you aren't!" Barry nearly shouts. "What the hell do you want from me?"
"Barry, please calm down. Everything is ok. Trust me." Peter said (trying not to reveal his identity to a person who is either a civilian or villain) as he placed a hand on Barry's shoulder.
Barry sighed. "Fine, tell Meena we're sorry for cutting our visit short." He told Eobard as he marched out of the room with Peter following. As soon as they left the room, he turned to Peter. "Why'd you ask me to calm down and trust you?" Asking impatiently.
"My spider-sense didn't tingle, he's not a threat."
"You heard what his name was right?!"
"Yes, Eobard Thawne."
"That's what he really looks like, before he took over Harrison Wells' life."
"I know, I saw him change back into that face after Eddie sacrificed himself."
"Well, if you know who he is and the fact that he helped create the B.L.O.C., why isn't your spider-sense tingling?"
"It's not and it's never wrong. When I first met "Harrison Wells," my senses warned me that something was off about him and as we both know, I was unfortunately right about him."
"What about Deathstorm? Your senses didn't warn you until it was too late." Barry threw in Peter's face. Peter's eyes were wide from the shock of his insult. "I'm sorry, but I can't take that risk." Barry said as he started to walk out of the building and call Chester about what happened.
Lian Yu, a few minutes later.
Thawne is in his cell reading "The Count of Monte Cristo," while Wade is reading an "Arthur" book.
"Oh, D.W., you really are a fucking bitch." Wade commented.
"Quiet, I'm reading." Thawne groaned.
"Maybe I should adopt Arthur like I did with Butters in "The Many Dates of Danny Fenton" spinoff, "After Many Dates: Danny and Wendy." Everyone in Elwood City is horrible to him, even his parents clearly side with D.W. or are more harsh to him than her."
Barry then speeds outside the cell.
"How are you still here?" Barry asked Thawne.
"Well…I want to see how this ends." Thawne replied, gesturing to his book.
"Something about a tree, but I only know from watching "V for Vendetta." Red Skull used one of the film adaptations to woo Jane Foster." Wade commented.
"Don't screw with me, either of you! How did you get your speed back?" Barry demanded.
"I didn't." Thawne replied, nonchalantly.
"Stop lying!" Barry yelled. "I saw you five minutes ago, 1,000 miles from here wearing your original face, pretending you didn't remember me."
"Barry," Wade started to say in a serious tone, "he hasn't left. I want him here almost as much as you do, so I have no reason to lie. Though I'd rather he be dead or didn't exist like in my timeline."
"Then who is he, Thawne? A version of you from your past?" Barry asks, but Thawne stays silent, so Barry yells, "Answer me!"
"I don't know." Thawne answered as he stood up and closed his book, dramatically. "And I don't care. Don't you get it? You took my speed. There's no other versions of me out there, no other tricks up my sleeve. You took everything from me. So why don't you just leave me alone."
"To paraphrase Tony Stark, "If you're nothing without your speed, then you shouldn't have it." And as Spidey said the other day, you really shouldn't have it." Wade said, but Thawne ignored him.
"You were nearly erased during Armageddon, it erased your past didn't it?" Barry realized as he told Thawne.
"And like Spidey also said to you, being evil has backfired on you."
"So, the Eobard that I fought must be from another timeline. Like Wade and Spider-Man. But…also like when I created Flashpoint, there was another Thawne. The only way to fix things was to let him go. When you fought with the Legends, he tried to keep himself from getting erased, but Black Flash caught up to him."
"I guess Zolomon never finished the job." Thawne replied as he walked up to the bars to make his point.. "Here's a suggestion: Why don't you go bother him?"
Barry then grabbed Thawne's book, took out a pen and started to draw on one of the black pages near the beginning of the B.L.O.C. When he finished, he showed the picture to Thawne. "The other Thawne built this. Does that mean anything to you?"
"He didn't build that, that's mine. That's my biometric lightning oscillation chamber that I built two centuries from now, when I was a younger man to see if I could become a speedster like you."
"It worked." Barry realized.
"But not the way I intended. Has it tapped into the Negative Speed Force?"
"That's why Meena's powers are so erratic. They're not artificial, they're negative. I've seen what that kind of force can do."
"Who's Meena?"
"Dr. Meena Dhawan, she's the one that's using the B.L.O.C."
"Never heard of her." Thawne says as he takes his book back. "And guess what? Neither has history. So, I guess your new adversary made sure that this Dr. Meena Dhawan never sees the future."
"Because if she keeps using that device, the negative Speed Force will start to alter her personality. It'll destroy her."
"Not if. When. There's one thing you should know about us Thawnes, Allen, no matter when we exist, no matter what our memories are, we only look out for ourselves. So whatever this new guy's endgame, he'll sacrifice every pawn on the board to get what he wants." Thawne said, trying to mess with Barry's head.
"Well, Eobard Thawnes, you mean. Cause Eddie died to save Barry, Iris, and basically everyone from you." Wade corrected him. "And he got to actually, genuinely do what you once wished you could: be friends with The Flash."
"Well, this Thawne won't. Not if I stop him before he has a chance." Barry replied. "And Wade's right. As jealous as I was of him for dating Iris, I did grow to care for him as a friend and unlike you, he didn't trick me into doing so."
Barry then sped away. Thawne then turned to another part of the room outside his cell.
"Well. Just when I thought this day couldn't get any more interesting. Oh, John? You can come out now." Thawne said.
From a hallway on the other side of Thawne and Wade's cell, John Diggle, aka Dig, aka Spartan of Team Arrow, makes his way in front of the cell.
"It's been a long time." Dig stated. "Last time I saw you, you were still pretending you needed a wheelchair."
Thawne laughs. "Last time I saw you, your friend Oliver Queen was still alive."
"And according to What If Universe, last time I saw you was during his Earth-1's version of "Arrow" season 2, or maybe Spider-Man and Caitlin's/Frost's wedding, Mayor Poole from "Blue Bloods!"" Wade exclaimed.
"Yeah, after Barry asked about you, Lyla told me about you." Dig said, ignoring what Wade meant by "Blue Bloods."
"As nice as it is catching up, what do you want, John?" Thawne asked.
"For the past two years, I've covered every corner of this Earth…and I still can't get this damn thing to open again." He explained as he revealed a small box.
"Oh, hey! It's the box containing the green glowing mcguffin that was teased in the last episode "Arrow" and has been insinuated to be a Green Lantern ring, because Diggle's fans (and yes haters, he has them, though I agree with you) have wanted him to actually be John Stewart. Especially because his first appearance was in a "Green Lantern" comic, which later got reprinted into a comic called "Green Lantern/Green Arrow" and Johnny here was one of Ollie's sidekicks." Wade exclaimed.
"Excuse me?" Dig asked about Wade's insult.
"Wait a minute." Wade realized, ignoring Dig. "Hal Jordan was in those comics too and Ryan Reynolds played him (and met Blake Lively) in that shitty live action movie that Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim wrote before creating the Arrowverse! Did you put me in this cell because of that connection?!"
No. I needed you somewhere in this world and out of the way and I figured locked up annoying Thawne was a good idea. Plus I need you to voice my commentary about this plotline in the Arrowverse.
"Okay, fine. Plus we're bound to finally get a live action John Stewart in the Max Green Lantern show that James Gunn announced last year that just cast Kyle Chandler. Seems too old for the role, but hey, Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner and he's no spring chicken either." Wade replied.
Also…I liked that movie.
"What is he talking about and to who?" Dig asked Thawne.
"Just ignore him." Thawne replied.
"Anyway, I believe you can help me open it again. This cube fell out of the sky and dropped into my lap. Before I could see what was inside, it shut itself. I've had friends examine every inch of it. And all they can tell me is that it's knowledge that's beyond any current human understanding and that it can transport matter."
"Okay, that rules out it being a Green Lantern ring. Way to tease us, Guggenheim!" Wade shouted.
"Um, anyway," Dig continued, ignoring Wade, "when I heard from Lyla you were here, I-"
"You thought some 23rd century ingenuity might help." Thawne deduced. "Good call. Why not just have Lyla give it to me herself?" He asked, but Dig's face answered for him. "I see. Trouble in paradise."
"Trying to open this box…I've had to spend a lot of time away from home, away from my kids."
"But you just can't leave the box behind, can you?"
"So it's not a Green Lantern ring, but it is a green glowing ring that makes you think it's your precious?" Wade commented.
"You might not be far off." Dig replied. "Even when this thing is away from me, I can still feel it in my mind…pulling me closer. I hear it in my mind, saying "worlds await." The more I fight it, the louder I hear its call, but I have to know what it is. I-I have to know what these damn voices want from me."
"So have the fans…back when they thought it was a Green Lantern ring."
"Would you shut up about the Green Lantern ring!" Thawne yelled.
"I would, but Guggenheim even insinuated that it was a Green Lantern ring, and now he's reneging!"
"I don't know what you're talking about, so Shut. Up!" Thawne tells Wade before turning back to Dig. "You've come to the right place. I've seen transmatter technology like that before, forged at the Orrery of Worlds with the power to travel across realities."
"Wait, you mean that thing can get me and Spidey home?"
"Possibly, but I won't help you." Thawne told Wade, before replying to Dig. "But I will help you. On one condition: that when you open up that box again, John…I get to see what's inside."
"I wanna look, too! Been waiting two years since it was teased in the finale of "Arrow!""
"Chester, Peter, I'm heading back to Central City, I need you to find who's still inside Fast Track Labs." Barry told them over the coms.
Chester complies and checks on his computer (in the Speed lab for some reason). "Pretty cleared up for the night." He replied. "Just two heat signatures inside."
"Meena and Thawne."
"What's the 411, boss?"
"I think it's the Thawne from Flashpoint, now he's pumping Meena with negative speed."
"Barry, even if you're right about where Thawne came from, my spider-sense didn't tingle for him or Meena. I think you're worried about nothing." Peter told him.
"You've said it yourself, you've been wrong before."
"If you need backup-" Allegra started to suggest.
"No, it's too dangerous. I don't know why he's doing this, but I won't let anyone get hurt."
"At least let me back you up in the Velocity Spider. Not to mention outside of you, I have the most experience fighting evil speedsters on this team." Peter insisted.
Barry wanted to argue, especially since Peter seemed like he may be a hindrance. But he did trust that Peter is an experienced hero and the Velocity Spider could be useful.
"Ok, fine, meet me at that laboratory with the B.L.O.C." Barry relented as Peter ran into Chester's lab to change into the Velocity Spider.
A few minutes later, the two heroes arrive in the laboratory (Peter used a tele-sphere to teleport in) to see Meena in the chamber, about to get more speed as Eobard operated the controls on the side.
"Meena, Stop!" Barry exclaims.
Thawne turns to see the heroes. "Flash. Spider-Man. What are you doing here?" He asked.
"Flash, I know what happened today, and I know how to fix it." Meena tried to explain before Barry could answer Thawne.
"No, you don't." Peter tells her. "That machine isn't giving you artificial speed, it's giving you speed from the negative speed force. An extra-dimensional power source fueled by rage and hate. Same place the Reverse Flash got his speed and it's part of the reason he's evil. Right? That's the jist I got from your conversation with Reverse Flash." Peter asked.
"Yes it is, and It's why you attacked me." Barry told them.
"Wha-" She replies, shocked.
"The B.L.O.C. is fueled by lightning from the upper atmosphere." Eobard replies in denial. "We've run the numbers a thousand times."
"Then your math's wrong. Or you're a damn liar." Barry replied.
"My money's on the math." Peter said.
"Eobard? What is he talking about?" Meena asked.
Peter knows that something is going to happen soon. His senses might not be tingling, but he knows that Barry is gonna inadvertently cause something to happen due to his anger and history with the Reverse Flash. So rather than stopping Barry from causing it, Peter decides to be ready to react should Eobard or even Meena do something.
"I'm talking about who he really is." Barry tells her. "The Eobard Thawne that I know, no matter what body he's in or what timeline he comes from, he's always the same person. A psychotic murderer…known as the Reverse Flash."
"I didn't do anything to you or anyone else, why can't you understand that?" Eobard asked.
"I'm done listening to you. Whatever you're trying to do to her, it ends now." Barry demanded.
"You're making a huge mistake." Eobard pleads.
"No, I'm taking you to Iron Heights, which is letting you off easy."
"Leave. Him. ALONE!" Meena yells, believing that the Flash is bullying Eobard. She then starts to grab the handles inside the chamber.
"Meena, don't!" Peter yells.
She doesn't listen, she grabs them, absorbing more speed as she is covered in black and white lightning. Alarms on the computer connected to the B.L.O.C. go off. "Oh, no. Her brainwaves are altering. It's too much power!" Eobard exclaims with fear.
Meena screams with pain at how much energy she's absorbing. Peter wonders if he should shoot ice webbing to stop her, or if that will have a negative outcome, like killing her and/or them. What he does know is that the longer she holds those handles, the worse his Spider-sense tingles. But it doesn't matter anyway, as Barry tries to speed over to save her. But Meena looks at Barry with anger and sends a black and white lightning pulse, which knocks him, Eobard, and Peter to the ground and unconscious.
It's then that the machine turns off, having given Meena more speed. Meena, having closed her eyes after the machine turned off, opens them to reveal red energy, like the Reverse Flash. She walks out of the machine as black and white lightning crackle around her body.
"Speed." She says with a vibrating voice. "Need. More. Speed." She then speeds out of the lab.
Back on Lian Yu, Thawne continues to explain what the box is to Diggle.
"These cubes appear to people at a crossroads, at a turning point in their lives, so when the cube first opened, what was going through your mind?" Thawne asked.
"I just buried Oliver." Dig replied solemnly. "We were moving the kids to Metropolis."
"Oh yeah, just those things." Wade said sarcastically. "Oh, and the fucking Crisis on Infinite Earths just happened! And sorry, What If Universe, I will not call it "the Crisis on Infinite What ifs!" It's one thing to call your story that, but it's dumb when actual characters say it!"
"Crisis on Infinite What ifs does sound dumb." Thawne replied. "But John, you were starting a new life, you were in control of your destiny for the first time in years, that is why the cube chose you, for that sense of purpose."
"Then why did it close?" Dig asked.
"Because you weren't ready to accept its power yet. Really, the only question, John, is …are you ready now?"
Dig thinks about what Thawne just said. He turns his back to him and concentrates on the box. "I am."
"Good. Then put yourself in that headspace again. Close your eyes. Think of what your future could be. All the light you bring into this world." Dig does so and the box finally opens, shining a green glow. Dig stares at it as Thawne keeps talking. "All the cosmic odysseys that await. Look at them all. All those lives you could lead. Do it, John. Do it. Drink of the Bleed Mandrakk hid within the cube. Feel its power. Break through the source wall, for when you break through that wall, all those worlds that await will be yours."
"There's a little bit of pee coming out of me right now. Also getting a boner from all these obscure DC Comic references." Wade said with awe.
After a while of staring at the light, Dig comes to a conclusion. "No," he said. " I don't want this. I don't want any of this!" He yells at the cube. "Do you hear me? The answer's no!" He then closes the box and throws it away. Mid-air, it disintegrates into nothing.
"Something tells me that Thanos didn't snap it away into dust." Wade quipped.
"No! No!" Thawne yells. "What have you done? Do you know what you have done?"
"Aside from wasting your fans' time and minds with the hope and anticipation that they'd finally see you become the Arrowverse version of John Stewart and therefore a Green Lantern!"
"ENOUGH WITH THE GREEN LANTERN SHIT!"
"Hey, I'm not the one who gave this subplot an anticlimactic ending."
"I know what I've done." Dig told them. "I saw a thousand lives I could lead. But not one of them led me back to my family."
"I was meant to see inside that cube! To find a way out of this hell hole and kill my tormentor!" Thawne yells.
"Ah, you do care, don'cha?" Wade replied with glee.
"I guess it's a good thing the cube didn't choose you, huh?" Dig tells Thawne.
"You're not special. You're not someone important." Thawne lashes back. "This was your last chance to be someone powerful!" Wade then laughs. "WHAT IS SO FUNNY?!"
"You're thinking like a supervillain. Not everyone wants power and glory." Wade replied before doing a Judd Hirsch impression. """All you need is love." John Lennon. Smart man. Shot in the back, very sad.""
"He's right." John replied. "Now I realize that the cube was trying to make me someone else, something else."
"Huh, nice "Arrow" reference."
"It even tricked me into believing that somehow I wanted it, too, but…I don't." He continued while ignoring what Wade just said. "Because there is no power in the universe more powerful than the love I have for my family. But I suppose a man like you wouldn't understand that. Because if it came down to a choice between some cosmic destiny, or…being a father, a husband…there's really no choice at all."
After finishing that monologue, Dig leaves the outer cell to make his way home to his family.
"He's right." Wade tells him. "Believe it or not, but I don't want to be stuck in this cell with you. I'd rather be back home, with Vanessa in my arms. Oh and one more thing." He says before decking Thawne. "You fucking deserve this hell hole, you fucking idiot! After all the lives you've ruined, after all the destruction you've caused! Hell, you should be fucking lucky that this isn't my timeline or universe where your own schemes caused you to get erased from existence twice! You should wish you were lucky as the Thawne Barry is dealing with right now and not for the reasons you think."
Back at Fast Track Labs, Barry and Peter start to regain consciousness.
"You okay?" Peter asked.
"I'm alive." Barry tries crackling with lightning around his body, but parts of him have bits of steam coming off him. "Chester." He asked over the coms. "Meena's negative lightning pulse just canceled out my speed again, just like this morning." He doesn't get a response, just the sound crackling. "Chester?"
"Let me try. Spider-Man to base, do you read me?" Also just hears crackling. "Nothing. She must have shorted out our coms with her lightning."
"What about your web-shooters and the rest of the Velocity Suit?"
Peter sees that his lenses have their displays back. "Fortunately it's rebooting, it'll take a few minutes." He sighs. "I should have shot her with ice webbing when I had the chance. But I was too worried I'd hurt her and/or us."
"It's okay, we'll get her." Barry reassured him.
"Meena. Where is she?" Eobard groaned with worry as he awoke.
"She's gone. This is what you've wanted all along, isn't it? For the negative speed force to corrupt her?" Barry accused.
"Why would I want THAT?!" He yelled. "I didn't even know the negative speed force existed before today!"
"She protected you from me, why would she do that?"
"Because she loves me! You idiot! And I love her!" He tells again before getting sad. "More than anything. When I lost my memories, I had a singular focus in my life. Somehow, some way, I was going to be a speedster, and then I met Meena." After a beat, he starts to tear up. "Everything changed. At first, I wanted to be bigger than you, bigger than a superhero, I wanted to recharge power grids, reverse tornadoes before they destroy cities and towns, end famine, end wars, I wanted to save the world.
"But it wasn't meant to be. I had already fallen in love with Meena when we discovered her machine could only work for one person. But that wasn't the worst part. Meena had a heart condition, and one night, she went into cardiac arrest. There was only one way to save her, the B.L.O.C. I gave up my old dream to save my new dream.
"So please. Even if I was this…monster, somehow, or in another life, don't hold my sins against her. I am begging you: save her." He pleaded.
Barry sees the ernesty in his face and voice and the tears in his eyes. This is not the same man who killed his mother and tried to kill him and his family. Barry turns to Peter, realizing that his Spider-sense was right and that this Thawne is not a threat.
"The Thawne I know has haunted my life since I was just a kid. He's killed people I care for. He deserves to rot." Barry tells Eobard. "He could never put someone else's needs before his. I'm sorry. Spider-Man here could sense that you weren't a threat and I should have listened. You're not the man I thought you were." Barry apologizes before extending his hand in friendship. "You're someone better."
Eobard looks over at Spider-Man to see if what Barry said was true about sensing him and Peter gives him an approving nod. He knows that Barry is sincere and shakes his hand. After they shake hands, Barry's electricity starts to crackle around him like normal.
"My speed's back." Barry states
"And my suit is back up and running." Peter told him.
"Flash? Spider-Man? Are you there?" Chester asked over the coms.
"Yeah, we're here. What's happening?" Barry replied over the coms.
"Okay, Meena's attacking power junctions all over the city."
"Eobard, why would Meena need electricity?" Peter asked him.
"Her speed is supposed to be temporary." Eobard replied.
"If Meena runs out of speed, the negative speed force will lose its grip on her." Barry realizes. "It's making her absorb electricity to make more speed and maintain control."
"If that's the case, then she's gonna look for the largest power source possible."
"The Keystone Cleveland Dam."
While Barry went to the dam to confront and antagonize Meena into chasing him, Peter and Eobard met with Chester and Allegra and were close by in a S.T.A.R. van, driven by Allegra, with Chester and Eobard in the back, monitoring the two speedsters, and Peter riding shotgun.
"Guys, she's right behind me. Are you in position?" Barry said over the coms.
"Almost." Allegra replied before tilting her head towards the back of the van to ask the others, "Everyone okay back there?"
"I just hacked into Meena's speed gauge." Chester replied. "Her saturation is already under 40%, it's working."
"If Flash can keep her running for another 119 seconds, she'll burn off the rest of her speed." Eobard stated.
A few seconds later, they hear the sound of thunder and see Barry's vitals spike on the monitors.
"Flash? Can you hear me, Flash?" Chester asked with worry.
"She just summoned power directly from the negative speed force. It canceled out The Flash's power." Eobard states.
Peter is silent for a few seconds. "Are we almost there?" He asked Allegra.
"Less than thirty seconds. You got a plan?" She asked.
"Yes and hopefully The Beatles were right." He said before turning to the back. "Eobard, I can't believe I'm saying this to you, but I'm gonna need your help."
A few seconds later, they arrive near the dam to see Meena standing over Barry. Peter and Eobard exit to confront her, with Chester and Allegra trailing behind.
"Meena! Stop!" Eobard shouts at her before pleading to her. "I can't let you do this. Please, please, you have to stop this."
"Listen to him, Meena, you can give up the speed. I know what it feels like to have power that tempts you with how it helps you, but is ultimately bad for you. It feels good. But you'll lose yourself. It'll destroy you. Let it go." Peter told her.
"Never. The Meena you knew is gone." Dark Meena replied. "Lost in the electrostatic pits of your precious machine."
"I know you're still in there." Eobard continued to plead. "I can feel you, locked away inside, please. Meena, come back to me."
"You're wasting your time." She says as she starts to vibrate her hand like the Reverse Flash would do and starts to make her way towards Barry. "This is who I am now. And killing The Flash is my purpose."
"No, no, it isn't!" Eobard exclaims as he rushes over to stand between her and Barry, trying to protect them both.
"Perhaps I should kill you first."
Eobard then extends his arms out to his side, agreeing to be sacrificed if it means saving the woman he loves. "Go ahead. Because I'd rather die right here, right now than lose you." He then confesses everything he loves about her. "I know the real you! You're the genius who stumped every lab tech in Central City. The health-conscious partner who never let me have a cheeseburger! The hero who taught me to put others before myself. And that Meena, she would never be able to do something like this.
"I love you, Meena. I am begging you. Please." Everyone is silent for a few seconds after that, even Meena. "Please. Come back to me."
Meena then closes her eyes and then reopens them to reveal that they are back to normal. She gasps for air like she can finally breathe.
"Eobard?" Meena asks with tears in her eyes
"Oh, god." He replies as he embraces Meena, while the rest of Team Flash go to check on the hero.
"Flash. Are you okay?" Allegra asked.
"Yeah, I will be." He replied, before looking at the couple. "So will they."
"You saved me." Meena tells Eobard.
"No. You saved me." He replies before the two share a kiss.
"I'll be damned, Eobard Thawne in love." Peter quipped, much to the groans of some of his Teammates (except Chester, who laughed).
The six head back to Fast Track Labs to check on Meena and the B.L.O.C.
"Okay, well. My speed has finally worn off." Meena tells them as the watch monitoring her speed displays "0%."
"And so are the effects the negative speed force had on your brain." Chester states after getting the data on his tablet. Eobard and Meena sigh in relief. "I know that your experiment didn't exactly go as planned, but this is one seriously dope lab." He then says, geeking out, which caused the others to laugh.
"How do you feel now?" Allegra asked her after regaining her composure.
"Well, I finally feel like myself again, and I am so sorry I didn't listen to you two, Flash, Spider-Man." She apologized. "We built the B.L.O.C. so we could help people. But, if we can't use it without me turning into a supervillain-"
"Then it's not worth the risk." Eobard said, finishing her sentence. "Especially if we don't even know how we tapped into the negative speed force to begin with."
"Right." Meena agreed.
Barry then has a realization based on what they just said. "What if there was a way around it?" He asked them. "Whenever I start to feel like I'm in over my head, I think about the person I love most."
Peter knows who he's talking about and while Eobard and Meena look at Barry with happiness that he also has someone that he loves in his life, Peter rolls his eyes underneath his mask.
"She helps guide me home, like a lightning rod. Just like tonight, when the negative speed force corrupted you-" Barry continued, before Meena interrupted.
"Eobard brought me back." She realizes before making a small laugh with joy before turning towards Eobard, lovingly. "So you think that our bond could help me control my powers?" She then asked.
"It would take some tinkering with the B.L.O.C., but if Eobard's your lightning rod, there's nothing you can't accomplish together."
"Well, should we take a look at the instruction manual?" Eobard asks Meena in a seductive tone.
"Oh, I'd thought you'd never ask." She replies as they leave the main lab to go into a smaller part with windows before Chester's tablet makes a notification chime.
"Mm, sorry to interrupt the sniffles. When you said that Flashpoint Thawne came back, I reached out to a mutual friend to get some intel. He just left a message." Chester tells them before using his tablet to display the message on a nearby monitor, revealing form Team Arrow and Legend, Ray Palmer. Though the video is glitchy.
"Chester, hey. Sorry it took me so long to-to get back to-The Quincy P. Runk institute is having a minor infestation of serpent creatures from the Morlaidh dimension. It's under control…I think. As for your questions, I don't think the Waverider can travel to other timelines. I even asked Nate while we were having retirement drinks and the Waverider hasn't been upgraded since I left to do so. I'm afraid I can't help your friend, Spider-Man, who I so want to meet next time I'm in town. You mentioned also contacting Constantine and I think he's your best bet.
"As for your other question, Nate says that the Legends had their own encounter with the Reverse-Flash this year. Yeah, apparently the Time Wraiths saved him from Black Flash. His powers were stripped and he was re-educated and assigned to make sure that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand still happened and cause World War I to happen, he had to protect that fixed point. He even decided not to fight it and started to understand that history cannot and should not be changed. Thawne spent years protecting the timeline until he died helping the Legends. Pretty tragic twist, huh?"
Screech is then heard in the background of the video, causing Ray to look off camera at the commotion.
"Whoops! Just another serpent loose, so, I just gotta grab my sword-" He says as he rushes off screen to the left, only to immediately return heading off screen to the right. "Annnd it's over here."
With that, the video ends.
"Wait, if Thawne from Flashpoint became a hero, but then died, how could he be here?" Chester asked.
""Space is warped and time is bendable."" Peter quoted.
"Huh?" Allegra asked.
"Oh, Peter's just referencing "Mystery Science Theater 3000." Chester explained.
"Still applicable for this situation." Peter pointed out.
"Maybe when he sacrificed himself, the Time Wraiths saved his life again, brought him here." Barry theorized.
"To Meena?" Allegra asked as she, Chester, and Peter look over at the cute couple.
"Guys, I know it sounds crazy but, however it happened, I think we're lucky it did."
"To be fair, they're newbs. I stopped questioning how the universe works after meeting the immortal Vandal Savage and the reincarnated Hawks." Peter tells them. "But yeah, I bet they're lucky it happened too."
"Plus, we could always use another hero." Allegra stated.
"Never hurts to have back up." Barry said as he looked at Peter.
Back at Lian Yu, Wade was getting ready to turn in for the night, while Thawne was thinking about the loss of his speed and his hatred for Barry.
"We've been looking for you, Eobard." Said a voice.
"The fuck?" Wade exclaimed.
"The man with no past. The anomaly. You were invisible to us until the light from that damn cube showed where to find you."
"Mother Fucking John Diggle!"
"Well good for me. Now, who are you and…what do you want?" Thawne asked.
The voice chuckled. "I guess you could say I'm an old friend, and a new one, all rolled up in one. 'Cause that's how I roll!"
"And as for why I'm here…" said the voice, who now has a source. Wade and Thawne turn to see Deon Owens, now sitting in a corner. "It's time to fulfill your destiny."
"I'm totally fucked, aren't I?" Wade asked, now very worried.
Meanwhile, in hell…
The friends, family, and villains continue their journey to find John Constantine. They hear loud growling nearby.
"You're sure your source was trustworthy?" Ben Parker asked Vandal Savage.
"I think the noise is a good indication." Savage pointed out.
They pass by a building to see John Constantine himself, opposite a large army of demons in an open field. He has them trapped by a magical force field that he's controlling with a toa mandala at the end of his palm, while holding the end of a necklace with a pentagram that he's wearing. He's chanting in Latin to make the spell stronger. Soon enough, the force field pushed the demons back several miles away. Constantine then exhales in exhaustion and drops his hands to his side. He then took out a water bottle and a granola bar from his coat to have a quick snack.
"Um, Constantine?" Frost asked.
Constantine then turned around to see who called him. "Well, well, well, the deceased family, friends, and the enemies they torture of the heroes of Earth." He said in his familiar Welsh accent. "You've got thirty minutes until that lot comes back, so make it quick. If I don't keep them at bay down here, they'll run rampant on Earth and since they're magical, I wouldn't count on Clark and Kara for help. If you want to send a message to-"
"I already told her that she can't, Jonathan." Stein told him.
"And I already told you Professor, it's either Constantine, John, John Constantine, or Johnny, never "Jonathan."" He replied as he also took out a cigarette and began to light.
"Oh, no, please don't light it!" Malcolm Merlyn exclaimed.
"You see, Crystal, the worse of a person you are on Earth," Stein begins to explain as Constantine blows out a puff of smoke from smoking his cigarette towards the villains, who go into big fits of coughing, "the more severe the asthma you're given down here."
"Nice," Frost said, glad that these villains were getting their comeuppance. "So, this is what you've been busy with all these months?"
"Aye, luv. How can I help you?" Constantine asked.
"Simple, answer the phone message that Barry left you back in January."
Constantine looked confused at her. He then reached into his coat and discovered that he had voicemail. "Bloody hell, I had it on silent this whole time." He said before playing Barry's message on speaker phone.
"Hey, it's Barry Allen. We have a situation here in Central. Last night, a man appeared in Caitlin's apartment, claiming to be a superhero from another universe, though Chester believes he's from another timeline where the multiverse still exists. He says he appeared a week ago, but was like a ghost to us. We couldn't hear or see him and he claims that every time he phased through objects, he experienced pain. He didn't become corporeal until last night when he appeared. He says that he just wants to go back home. If you know of any magical ways of doing so or know someone who can help him, we'd really appreciate it. We also called the Legends, but they haven't answered either. Please help him, his name is Peter Parker and he just wants to get back to his family and friends."
Constantine looks at the group with surprise at the message's revelation.
"There's more going on up there, but I'll tell you the later since it can't affect what you tell them." Frost explained.
"I'm sorry, but I've gotta stay down here and keep those demons at bay." Constantine apologized.
"Can't you at least recommend to them a magic user on Earth that can help him?"
"Well, there's an organization in New York, The Masters of the Mystic Arts. They're alright, but I think they're posh wankers compared to me. But they will help." He tells them before checking his watch. "Still got another twenty-five minutes until the next bout." He then starts calling Barry.
Frost and the others who knew Peter were happy that progress was finally being made.
A/N: The flashback is from Chapter 22 of "Flash and Spider-Man: Book 2 of the Spider-Verse" by What If Universe.
I think I've watched too many of the "FU DW" videos on YouTube and it influenced Wade's reading material.
"The Many Dates of Danny Fenton" is a "Danny Phantom" fanfic by Flower princess11 where Danny joins a dating service and goes on various dates with teen girls from fiction, mostly cartoons. There is an ongoing sequel and spin-offs where he ends up with one of the dates (the "After Many Dates" series) by different authors. "After Many Dates: Danny and Wendy" is a spin-off where Danny ends up with Wendy Corduroy from "Gravity Falls." All of the spin-offs reference other cartoons, like "After Many Dates: Danny and Kim" (where he ends up with Kim Possible), which makes fun of adult cartoons like "Family Guy," "American Dad," and "King of the Hill" and have Deadpool show up to break the fourth wall, "After Many Dates: Danny and Wendy" has him adopt Leopold "Butters" Stotch from "South Park," cause his parents are horrible on the show."
I had to include Dig's subplot because Deadpool had to say my reaction to it when I first watched it back when it aired in 2022.
This arc is definitely letting me get out a lot of my commentary on Thawne on the show.
