Mining Colony

The sound of rain forced the system to order everyone to stop working, again the tunnels would be full of water and that meant that the colonies would get a fresh supply of drinking water.

It didn't matter that the water on this rock was full of minerals and bacteria that would kill a man if they drank it before filtering it and treating it with so many chemicals that the thing tasted worse than anything that someone would find in the sewers.

He can't help but let out a breath of relief now that he can finally remove the damm mask and breathe the recycled air of the base.

The dark metal and stone walls were barely kept light by the lights that were scattered here and there to help them navigate and were only good enough to keep them from getting lost.

Still, he couldn't help but smile, the oppressive feeling that had always been here was gone, the walls were so thick that barely any sound could make it past them, something that several men and women discovered the hard way.

The screams of pain, cries of mercy, and desperate calls for help had been replaced by the faint sounds of music and TV shows that helped them pass the time.

He stopped walking and opened the door to his room, it should have been a shred room but no one wanted to work in the mines because of how dangerous it was so he ended up with a room that was honestly bigger than what he needed.

He didn't care to change clothes he just took them off and turned on his computer, he looked at the antic videogames that lined the walls of his room all of them had been upgraded so that they worked with today's technology.

He found the one that he was looking for and put it on the computer.

His once empty room was now full of things that he used to pass the time, it was all illegal because he wasn't supposed to have so many things but the higher-ups agreed to look the other way as long as he left most of it behind when he quits and goes a colony.

It wasn't out of malice, hell the higher-ups had a bunch of things that they weren't supposed to have, but in a place like this people need things to distract themselves, and it's nearly impossible to take so many things off world.

The sound of his door opening forces him to pause the game and he sees someone that shouldn't have been here standing at his door.

They look at each other and without a word she walks to the bottom bunk and puts a bag on it before pointing at his things and signaling to him that she wants them off her bed.

"Why are you here?" he asks her before standing up and removing his things.

The woman smiles at him and hands him her worksheet, he can't help but look at the thing.

It has her name and the room she is assigned to, and unfortunately for him, she is his roommate.

"Again why are you here?" he asks her.

"First put some clothes on and second I need money just like everyone else.' she answers him.

"Couldn't you do something else, I mean I had this room the way I liked it and no go look everywhere else no one that has any time on this rock wears clothes after work." he answers her.

"Wow you guys get to do whatever you want." she says to him as she looks at this room and before picking up one of the guns that he bought.

"The colony that I'm from has so many rules that everything is a crime, I mean breathe too much and you are finned but you guys breathe as much air as you want." she says to him.

"Damm.' he thinks to himself, the woman is a colony girl one from the border worlds meaning that she is going to be a problem.

"So do I have to take my clothes off/" she asks him even as she unbottens her shirt.

"No you'll understand why tomorrow when you get off work for now just put your things away and don't cause trouble." he says to her before he goes back to his games.

"Colony words, the border, the frontier, a person can call them whatever they want all of them are nothing but trouble.

He looks at the woman's reflection on his screen he wants to choke her or beat her to death before she can do whatever she is planning.

Anyone who heard his thoughts would say that he was being paranoid, but they don't know about the bombings and deaths that happen whenever one or a group of them show up.

It doesn't matter if the place that they go to is aligned with the Empire, Earth, one of the fleets, or a random world. What matters is that they aren't allied with them so they cause as much damage as they can before dying or escaping.
