Lance's alarm blared as the time turned to 4:30 am. Lance turned the alarm off and stretched his arms before leaving his bed. It was time for the workout session, which he shared with Keith every morning. Lance walked into his closet and changed into a blue tank top with black sweatpants and a pair of black cross-trainers. Before leaving his room, Lance grabbed his filled water bottle and a towel. Lance rushed out of his room and made his way downstairs to the gym where Keith was already there and started his stretching and warm-up routine. Lance started his routine before joining Keith at the free weights area and went through all of the upper body workouts. Once the workout was completed, Lance and Keith made their way to the treadmills.
After programming the treadmills, Keith finally spoke to Lance. "So how do you feel about Diana?" Keith asked as he started the first run on an incline.
"Diana's awesome. I just met her, but it looks like she has everything—body, beauty, and intelligence. I couldn't ask more of a woman and I can't help but be attracted to her," Lance answered honestly as he climbed the next incline on his treadmill.
Keith whistled and laughed before responding. "Now that it's established that you're attracted to the woman…can we establish your first impression of Diana as a fellow teammate?"
Lance facepalmed before responding. "You weren't supposed to hear that," Lance said before thoughtfully pausing. "Diana will fit perfectly. After spending the afternoon with her yesterday, I think she has probably been exposed to military intelligence as well as flying through the Alliance. Diana also seems to be analytical and at times observant." Lance paused for a few moments. "She's the real deal and definitely not an evil person."
"Good enough. So…let's circle back to your initial comments," Keith said as he slowed down for a few moments. "I don't understand how you're attracted to her? I swear I only caught you throwing insults at her."
"Hey now, I do compliment her, too" Lance defended. "I can't even explain it. There's just something about her and I can't even tell if I'm fighting lust or love."
"Whatever you do, just take it slow. She just got out of a relationship and I think she's still recovering from it—even though it was months ago."
"I promise I won't break her heart if that's what you're getting at," Lance said thoughtfully as he started to tackle another incline on the treadmill. "However, Diana isn't allowing me the opportunity to get close to her. I can't prove it-but I feel that Diana's just as attracted to me as I am to her."
"Then there's your dating history and Diana either guessed it outright or heard a million stories by now. You're going to have a hard time convincing Diana about your feelings about her. Otherwise, I can see more doors in the face and maybe some slaps in your future." Keith couldn't help but grin at his last statement.
"That's enough about me. Let's talk about you and Allura," Lance said with a grin. "What's going on with you two lovebirds? And don't tell me I'm seeing things. The guys and I know that you two are together."
"Fine. Allura and I have been in a relationship for months. Diana figured our relationship out the first night we stayed at Williams House. She promised not to tell anyone. In the meantime, Allura and I are enjoying our privacy." Keith paused for a few moments. "We'll tell Coran and everybody else soon enough about our relationship."
Lance smiled. "I would confess to the relationship soon before the parade of princes starts up again. And when the princes return, somebody is going to have hurt feelings," Lance paused for a moment as he stepped up to the next incline. "You know, Coran and Nanny probably already know about the relationship. In fact, they have probably already accepted you as a worthy suitor. It doesn't take much to figure the mutual attraction."
"Point taken," Keith said as he slowed the speed on the treadmill. "Diana said something similar on Earth." Keith looked down to check his watch. "By the way, it's 6:30. Let's get ready for the rest of the day." The men got off the treadmills before leaving the gym for their rooms in the Voltron wing. The walk to their rooms was a silent one and they didn't speak again until they were just in front of their respective rooms. "I'll see you in a few minutes at practice," Keith told Lance.
"I'll see you at practice," Lance replied before going into his room. The light on his bedside panel was blinking. Curious, Lance walked over to read the new message. It came from the ground crew chief who requested that Lance move Red Lion to the main hangar so they could load Red Lion with the supplies that Diana requested for the Davi-Smythe region and a few big items she wanted for herself at Smythe House. Lance took a few moments to calculate the time needed to get showered, move Red Lion to the hangar, get said lion loaded, and pick up Diana as his passenger before his patrol time. Lance then sighed, knowing that Keith wasn't going to be a happy camper to hear that he'd miss practice this morning. Lance quickly sent a message to Diana before calling Keith to let him know that he was going to miss practice this morning.
Diana woke up to the sound of her alarm and turned to see that it was 8 am. With a smile, Diana basked in the Arusian sunlight and the feeling of being in her "new" room in the castle. "I can't believe I'm finally waking up in Arus again!" Diana said to herself as she stepped out of bed and did a few stretches to get her day started. She turned to see the blinking light on the panel next to her bed. Curious to receive a message so early in the day, Diana reached out and read Lance's message stating that he'd drop her off at Smythe House while on patrol this morning and to meet him at the bridge at 9. "I have roughly 45 minutes before I have to meet him. Luckily, I had my duffel bag packed already." Diana said to herself before running to the bathroom to take a quick shower.
Fifteen minutes later, Diana was dressed and refreshed her hairstyle from last night. Today she decided to wear a pair of maroon jeans, a white t-shirt, a maroon vest, and finally maroon and white sneakers. After making sure she looked just right, Diana quickly slid her father's handwritten journal and a couple of other small things into the duffel bag before stepping out of the door. Diana took a quick glance at her watch and saw that she had under 30 minutes to meet Lance at the bridge. In panic, she immediately jogged through the hallway and stairs. Diana was making good time dashing through the castle but was ultimately stopped by Nanny when she attempted to pass the dining room.
"Where do you think you're going, Marchioness? You shouldn't miss breakfast," Nanny said as she grabbed Diana's arm. "How many times have I told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? I can't believe how many of you young people always think that breakfast is skippable. I understand having to lecture those hooligans about breakfast, but I don't understand how a young woman like yourself needs the same lecture!"
"Who are the hooligans, Nanny? As for skipping break—" Diana started.
"Those boys from Earth! Except for the Commander. The Commander is a fine and honorable young man," Nanny said as she pulled Diana into the dining room. "I'm grateful that the Alliance sent such a fine gentleman and officer," There were soft cheers from some of the maids who were putting up used plates and trays and from the kitchen staff that was in the process of putting in clean plates and full trays. There were discrete coughs from the male staff and other castle personnel who were leaving the room. Some of the staff sent discrete looks of pity towards Diana. "Not that the others haven't made progress at all. With a little work, the Lieutenant will be just as fine as an officer and gentleman as the Commander. The youngster and the tall one still have a way to go," Nanny continued to explain. "Anyway, there will be no skipping meals on my watch! Now you just sit in this chair and I'll make sure to fill your plate with a full, nutritious, and delicious meal," Nanny said as she forced Diana to sit at the table. Diana glanced at her watch and noticed that she had 15 minutes to make it to the bridge on time to catch Lance.
"Nanny, I'm sorry but I don't have the time for breakfast. I have to meet Lance at the bridge in 15 minutes. He's dropping me off at Smythe House while he's patrolling the skies." Diana said as Nanny let go of her shoulder. Diana stood up from the chair. "I promise after today I won't skip breakfast."
"Goodness gracious! Why are young people always in a rush? Especially the ones that the Alliance sent our way," Nanny huffed and crossed her arms. "Luckily, I made sure that you have nutritious food packed for your visit to Smythe House. And that hooligan Lance will try to grab snacks at every opportunity today, too," Nanny continued with her tirade as she turned to face the door. Diana tried to get past Nanny while her back was turned, but Nanny reached out and snatched Diana's arm again. "Where do you think you're going? I would send a couple of plates of food for the two of you—but eating in those Lions is near impossible. I refuse to let you go out on an empty stomach. You're going to need the energy to go through Smythe House if it looks anything like the old castle did before those pilots came here."
"Nanny, I could just stop at-"
"I said hold on. You youngsters are always trying to rush into things! Arminta! Arminta! Grab two bags of food for me. Lieutenant McClain and Marchioness Diana are about to go to patrol and won't have time for a full breakfast. Make sure you put some extra bars in there, too! Both kinds!"
"Yes, Lady Hys!" The lead kitchen staff called from the doorway. A few moments later, Arminta entered the room with large lunch sacks and handed them to Diana. Nanny silently nodded to Arminta who then returned to the kitchen.
Nanny turned back to Diana. "Hopefully, we won't have another conversation about skipping meals, young lady. Now go on and meet the lieutenant at the bridge. Also remind him that if I see him sneaking into the kitchen for snacks, he won't like the consequences."
"I will Nanny. I also promise to make it back here safely," Diana promised as Nanny released her arm again. Diana carefully strode out of the dining room before dashing through the hallway. With great timing, Diana arrived at the bridge with two minutes to spare. Looking around and seeing that Lance hadn't arrived yet, Diana bent over slightly so she could catch her breath.
That was the moment that Lance was hovering over the bridge. Lance zoomed his screen to get a better look at Diana. He whistled as he let his eyes glance over Diana's shapely behind. Lance was also impressed that Diana arrived before he did. With a smile, Lance landed Red Lion before greeting her over his speakers.
"Good morning, Diana. By the way, why are you bending over? Not that I'm complaining about the beautiful view, mind you."
Diana straightened up and Lance watched in appreciation as Diana turned to face the lion. He admired how well the jeans, vest, and shirt fit Diana's body. He also admired the maroon sneakers and decided he needed a matching pair. When Diana was facing the lion directly, she gave Lance a rude gesture with her hands.
"I'm telling Nanny and Coran. Somehow, I don't think a proper noblewoman would ever—"
Diana rolled her eyes as she interrupted Lance. "Are you going to let me in? You have patrol and I have somewhere to be." Lance laughed as he lowered Red Lion's head and opened its mouth so Diana could find the cockpit easier. Once she was in the cockpit, Diana took the seat behind Lance before tossing him a bag of food. "Thank you for letting me in," Diana said as she strapped herself to the seat. "Nanny also wanted me to remind you not to be caught in the kitchen. She said if she caught you in the kitchen today, you won't like the consequences. I guess she prepared a special pot for you today."
Lance laughed before responding. "I'll make sure not to get caught today. She was probably mad that we skipped breakfast. I'm surprised that you didn't get an earful over skipping breakfast."
"Who's to say I didn't," Diana responded. "Nanny snatched my arm, forced me to sit at the table, then snatched my arm again as I tried to leave without eating. That's when she ordered Arminta to give her two bags and made sure to add extra bars, too." Diana paused to look through the bag and shook her head at the sheer amount of food it held. Lance looked into the bag and smiled as Diana gave him a summary of the conversation.
Lance laughed for a moment. "Are you strapped in? The thrust from the Lions is stronger than any from a jet or shuttle."
"Strapped in and ready for anything!" Diana said with excitement. "I can't wait to see how the Lions fly." Lance raised the head before moving the lion to start running. A few moments later, the lion took off for the Arusian sky. Diana enjoyed the stronger lift and felt that taking off in the lion was the best flying experience ever. "This is the best feeling ever! I don't think it's possible to give up flying in this."
Lance chuckled. "Well, we have another thing in common. I love flying in Red Lion—it's a whole new world of flying. Only the best pilots can make these kitties purr in the skies. If you're wondering who's the best pilot…"
"The thought did cross my mind…" Diana answered with a smile.
"You're flying with him right now," Lance bragged. "I can teach classes on how to fly anything out there."
Diana's smile brightened before responding. "I don't know about that. My dad adored me so I learned how to fly at an early age. I can fly anything and the box it came in."
"That's a bold statement!" Lance replied, grinning. "Prove—"
"Lance, I would stop bragging. Diana's flight scores matched our scores. Don't forget that you're on patrol." Keith said, as his face filled the screen.
"Aye, Captain," Lance said flippantly. Keith rolled his eyes before responding.
"Are you trying to get the overnight shifts at Control? You already skipped practice…"
"Ok, Nanny's right—you're definitely a hooligan, Lance," Diana said after clucking her tongue at him. "Skipping practice and skipping breakfast. I'm starting to wonder if Nanny is mellowing, I mean she even assigned you as my escort to the debut ball."
Lance rolled his eyes at Keith and Diana as they shared a chuckle. "My lion was being prepared and loaded for patrol. It's not my fault that the ground chief grounded me."
"Anyway, focus on patrolling the skies and make sure that you get Diana to Smythe House in a reasonable time," Keith warned before preparing to disconnect the call. "Control out."
"Party pooper," Lance muttered before making a sharp turn towards the outskirts of Altea Town. A few moments later, Diana stated that the cockpit was too quiet for her taste. "I can make all kinds of sounds. I can even cause you to make some interesting sounds."
"You love that gutter, don't you?"
"It depends if someone's in the gutter with me or not," Lance said with a smile. "I wasn't going in that direction, but I'll happily follow you there."
Diana chuckled. "You got me there, flyboy."
"That's space explorer, ma'am. That's a few grades higher," Lance replied with a smile. "If you take a look on your right, you'll see Vendome. In the past Vendome used to be a resort, now it's a growing village. Vendome also happens to be…"
"Nanny's hometown," Diana finished for Lance. "Their reputation for hospitality is second to none in Arus."
Lance smiled as he shared his favorite activity to do in Vendome. Diana smiled as Lance continued to share about different cities and villages on the way to Smythe House. Some of the things Lance shared about the towns made Diana smile while others made her roll her eyes at him. Before she knew it, Lance was already in her family's ancestral homeland—Davi-Smythe Lands. Diana smiled as Lance landed Red Lion in the open field in front of Smythe House—her family's ancestral home. After landing, Lance turned the pilot seat around and took the time to dig into Nanny's breakfast-to-go bags. Diana commented that Nanny still liked to pack food enough for a team to enjoy. Lance responded that Nanny's sense of proportions grows the more she knows that a person skips meals. Diana laughed in response softly as Lance checked in with Keith.
"Red to Control. Red Lion to Castle Control," Lance called.
"Castle Control to Red Lion, come in," Keith responded.
"Landed at Smythe House. We're going to tour the building before unloading the Lion. I'll check back in an hour."
"Red Lion at 10:30. Talk to you in an hour," Keith responded to Lance's comment.
Lance and Diana unbuckled their seats at the same time, which made their bodies come within inches of each other. It was then that Diana noticed Lance's smoky cologne and how his flight suit covered his body perfectly. The air in the cockpit was electrified as Lance took in Diana's aquatic perfume and enjoyed his view of Diana's outfit for the day. "You're quite the pilot, Lance," Diana finally managed to say.
Lance leaned closer to Diana before answering. "Thanks, sweetheart. There's more from where that came from." Just as Lance was going to close the distance between them, Diana ducked to grab her duffel bag before leaving the cockpit. Lance followed Diana outside the lion and whistled as he took in the house's exterior. "Are you going to be okay by yourself here?" Lance asked. Even with signs of damage, Lance was impressed by the grandness of the house. It appeared that Smythe House withstood Doom's attacks a bit better than the old Castle of Lions.
Diana turned to face Lance. "I'm back after all these years. I knew that the house took a few hits and was going to need repair. I'll be fine here by myself this week. It looks like I might not have to camp outside or stay in one of the towns." Diana turned to look at the house again. Without a doubt, Diana knew that she was willing to bring Smythe House back by any means necessary.
"Let's inspect the interior and confirm it's safe for you to stay in the house. It's in better shape than the old castle was—but I'll feel better if I knew for sure that you'll be safe here," Lance said, grasping Diana's hand. "Teammates are hard to find."
Diana chuckled at Lance's statement as he released her hand. Lance followed Diana and was impressed that the front porch just needed minor repair—a few planks replaced, new railing, and new porch furniture. Lance remarked that he could see a couple of benches and side tables—maybe even a swing. Diana smiled and agreed with Lance's assessment of the porch. Diana took out a key and managed to open the front door. The foyer was in great shape. For the next thirty minutes, Diana gave Lance a tour of the first floor: library, study, former household offices, kitchen, dining room, ballroom, and den. Lance noted what repairs were needed for each room and Diana was grateful for his input.
After going through the first floor, they climbed the stairs. Diana then took the time to show Lance the different guest rooms on the second floor. Diana pointed out how the household employees used to stay on the sides of the house and guests in the middle rooms. They managed to avoid the weak boards on the first flight of stairs but Diana eventually stepped into a newly created hole on the second flight of stairs. As she started to stumble, Lance grabbed and pulled Diana to him. Diana softly thanked Lance for using his quick reflexes and saving her. With a smile, Lance said it was his pleasure to save ladies from broken stairs. With a smile Diana pointed out the highest ranking household staff rooms that were above the other staff rooms.
"The suites to the right are usually reserved for the sons and their families," Diana started when they came back to the main wing. "In fact, this first suite to the right used to be Uncle Coran's room growing up. When my grandparents died, Uncle Coran was moved to the main suite. Garrett followed tradition and stayed in this room. Sometimes, my family would host or take in exceptional students and they stayed in these suites." Diana continued before showing Lance the suites and the extra rooms where she used to stay with her parents. It didn't miss Lance's attention when Diana suddenly grasped his hand as she went to her old room. Diana shared a few memories about the room, before slowly approaching her parents' room across the hall. Diana shared more memories while Lance wiped away a couple of tears. When they were done with the tour, Lance guided Diana back outside.
"Before we unload your lion, you're due to check in with Keith," Diana said with a smile. "I wouldn't want you to face overnight shifts at Control again."
"I don't know…it might be worth it this time," Lance said with a devious grin. Diana rolled her eyes and called Lance a rogue again. "As long as I'm your favorite rogue," Lance responded before Diana rolled her eyes again and said whatever. Chuckling, Lance checked in with Keith, stating that they checked out the house and Diana would be safe as long as she stays on the first floor. Lance also mentioned that the house had a garage and that it was large enough to hold all the supplies Diana managed to bring with her. Once he was finished checking in with Keith, Lance noticed that Diana excitedly grabbed a dolly and started placing boxes on it. Lance took the other dolly and started stacking some of the heavier items on it. An hour and a half later, not only did Lance and Diana manage to move all the supplies into the garage—but had Diana completely set up in the library which she decided to use as her room.
Lance and Diana were standing by Red Lion when Diana finally noticed that Lance left the last box by the lion. "I hope that's what I've been looking for is in there," Diana exclaimed before asking Lance for a crowbar. Once Lance placed the crowbar in her hands, Diana quickly opened the top of the box and cheered. The next thing Lance knew, the box was in pieces and Diana was grabbing her helmet before jumping on a purple motorcycle with the occasional red swirl.
Lance whistled before speaking as Diana started the bike. "That's a beautiful bike. Do you know how to—" Diana quickly steered the bike down the driveway to the entrance of the estate before returning to Lance's side. "I see you can ride a bike. Now, I'm even more intrigued with you."
Diana chuckled before taking off her helmet and turning the bike off. "Thank you for the compliment. And also, thank you for helping me with the supplies," Diana said as she kicked the stand so the bike could support its own weight. "I just wish I could bring more supplies with me. Although I'm giving away the supplies here, I hope that the towns have enough to make it until then."
Lance gently picked Diana up from the bike before placing her directly in front of him. Lance then bent his head slightly so he could look at Diana directly in the eyes. "If I find a way of getting those supplies sooner, would it make you happy?"
Diana looked at Lance for a few moments before speaking. "Lance, if those supplies could make it to the cities while I'm visiting them—I would be extremely grateful." Diana paused for a few more moments as she continued to look into Lance's eyes. "I can't imagine how everyone left behind feel about this whole situation. My family has always promised to protect and support the Davi-Smythe Lands. We ultimately failed when it mattered most. My parents were on Earth. Uncle Coran had his hands tied down managing several things and protecting Allura at the Castle of Lions. Right now, I can only hope to help restore some of the faith the citizens here had."
Lance nodded his head in understanding before speaking again. "I promise I will do everything I can to get those supplies delivered to the people."
"Lance, you don't have to…" Diana said, turning her eyes away from Lance's intense stare and towards Smythe House. She was somewhat impressed with the sincerity of Lance's promise while at the same time, she was unnerved by the romantic vibes she was feeling. It was the same vibes and feelings she felt from Lawrence before they started their relationship. Diana reiterated to herself that she was not going to jump into a new relationship—especially with so many things falling onto her plate. "It's my responsibility. And mine alone."
Lance gently took Diana's chin so she could face him again. "You're part of the team Diana. Our team looks out for each other like family. You're not alone in anything here in Arus." Diana nodded in understanding. Lance's eyes strayed from Diana's soft eyes down to her lips. Lance was mesmerized by how soft they looked—and before he knew it, he had this desire to give Diana a kiss. Before he could make that move, Keith's voice interrupted him.
"Control to Red Lion. Control to Red Lion." Lance and Diana sighed before Lance took a few steps away to answer Keith's call. Diana took a few moments to watch Lance's back as he gave Keith a brief update. With another sigh, Diana admired Smythe House as she thought about the moment she just had with Lance. Diana was so preoccupied with her thoughts that she didn't hear Lance return to her side.
"Diana, are you sure you'll be ok here by yourself?" Lance asked.
Diana fought the urge to jump as she turned to face Lance with a smile. "I'll be fine. You forget I'm also a Reserve officer."
"I didn't forget," Lance said returning Diana's smile. "If you need anything, just let me know. Red is the fastest lion."
"I'll do just that," Diana promised. "I should let you go…"
"Are you saying that you enjoy my company?"
"I'm not saying that I did but I'm not saying that I didn't…" Diana said before laughing. Lance joined in the laughter. "Seriously, you have patrol to complete. Have a great rest of your patrol, Lieutenant."
"Fine, I'll go," Lance said with feigned hurt. Diana rolled her eyes. "Remember to call on me if needed." Lance gave Diana a wink and blew her a kiss before turning around to enter Red Lion. Diana whistled softly as she watched Red Lion take to the sky.
Later that night, Diana was talking to Coran about the status of the house. She summarized the areas of the house that needed more intensive repairs before summarizing the areas that needed minimal repairs. "Now that we know exactly what the house needs we can get some estimates."
"Exactly. We can plan things out as we get the quotes—but no matter what, I feel that the people of Davi-Smythe should be involved in the restoration process since the house is just as much theirs as ours," Diana said, pausing for a few moments. "Since I surveyed Smythe House, I plan to visit the towns—starting with the farthest villages. Tomorrow I'll visit Eireann since it's the furthest point from the house. I plan to talk to the Mayor first—including an apology for not being able to help the people sooner. Then I'll talk to the villagers next. Then I'll tell them about the ash ceremony and finally the supplies I have at Smythe House for them. I feel so ineffective, although I know the challenges of going upstream versus downstream."
"Don't feel that way. You may be surprised at how much the people understand. If anything, I'm more to blame for their needs not being met for the last seven years."
"Uncle, you shouldn't shoulder all the blame," Diana said before realizing that they were just going to circle back and forth. "You were tied down to the Castle, trying to protect not only the monarch but the surviving citizens. That's just as important as being here with the people. The thing is that people know that we're here for them and they are always on our mind."
Coran smiled in response. "I couldn't put that last statement in better words, niece. By the way, Lieutenant McClain will be patrolling the skies all week during the day. If you need anything, don't hesitate to let him know."
"I will, Uncle Coran. He reminded me he's always available to help," Diana said with a smile. She took a glance at her watch before looking back at the screen. "I better let you get back to focusing on Castle Control. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"Until tomorrow," Coran responded before disconnecting the call. Coran checked the monitors for any significant changes before going through the list of supplies Diana sent for each town and village in the Davi-Smythe Lands. About an hour later, Lance walked into Castle Control, looking to talk to Coran about getting extra supplies to the Davi-Smythe Lands. With a smile, Lance approached the main console. Coran turned in his seat to face Lance. "How can I help you, Lieutenant?"
"Good evening, Coran. I was thinking about what Diana said about how she wished she could bring more supplies to the towns and villages of Davi-Smythe. I have the feeling that she won't ask me directly, but I wanted to offer to drop the supplies off while I'm on patrol this week. Red has plenty of space and it would be my pleasure to represent the Voltron Force."
Coran smiled. "I'm glad you suggested Red Lion do the work. I don't want to place a burden on you—"
"Coran, it's no burden at all. Red Lion could be loaded after practice since we know that the lion can take it," Lance interrupted Coran. "Besides, it'll do the people good to see part of Voltron."
Coran only took a few moments to think the idea over before responding to Lance. "It's settled, then. You'll drop off supplies in Davi-Smythe during your patrol runs this week. Stop by here tomorrow morning and I'll give you the list of supplies you're taking to Eireann—the most remote village in the land."
"Thank you Coran for approving this for me," Lance said with a smile. "I'm glad that I'm getting an opportunity to serve Arusians in a different way."
"I'm glad to hear it. Is there anything else?"
"That's all, Coran. I'll see you tomorrow morning!" Lance said as his smile grew brighter. He was pleased that he would be able to honor his one-sided promise to Diana. As he walked through the hallways, Lance thought about Diana and how surprised she was going to be to see him and Red Lion in Eireann in the morning.
After an unexpectedly good night's sleep, Diana woke up to the sounds of the birds chirping in the window above the cot she slept in. She took a few moments to bask in the feeling of waking up in Smythe House for the first time in years. After that, Diana stretched her arms and put up her father's diary before going to the bathroom next to the study. Miraculously enough, Smythe House still had running water access. Diana used the toilet before taking a quick shower. When she was done with the shower, she noticed that it was 8:45 and it was almost time for her to leave for Eireann. Smiling, Diana quickly changed into a maroon jumpsuit and boots before stepping out to the garage to get her motorcycle. After consulting her GPS, Diana noticed that it was going to take her roughly 90 minutes to get Eireann to the north. Smiling even brighter, she turned the engine on and a few moments later left for the remote village.
Meanwhile, at the Castle of Lions, Lance and Coran were in the hangar as Red Lion was getting loaded with supplies after the latest lion practice. Coran was there to personally oversee the cargo being loaded. Lance and Hunk both helped the ground crew until Nanny stormed the hangar, protesting how all the men present were skipping breakfast. After a few moments of convincing, a table was set aside and everybody took a seat to eat under Nanny's fierce graze. Once the meal was through, Nanny had her staff clear the table as she personally thanked the men for stopping their work for a meal break. Once Nanny left the hangar, there were a few rounds of laughter before the work continued.
Once everything was loaded, Lance spoke to Coran again. "That should cover everything. I'm heading out to Eireann. Is there anything I need to tell Diana for you?"
"Nothing. Have a good patrol, Lance," Coran said before exchanging salutes with Lance.
"Thanks, Coran. I'll see you later," Lance replied before running to his lion. A few moments later, Lance moved Red Lion out of the hangar before taking off for the Arusian sky, deciding to focus on the Davi-Smythe Lands first again. When he made it to the region, Lance noticed that Diana had already left for Eireann on her motorcycle. With a smile, Lance turned his lion towards Eireann.
When Diana arrived in Eireann, she was surprised to see the mayor waiting patiently for her arrival outside his house. After putting the kickstand in place, Diana got off the bike and approached the front door. Once she was a few feet from the mayor and his wife, Diana bowed to the couple. "Mayor and Mrs. Walsh, please forgive my family and me for failing to protect and support the town at its greatest need these past few years. I can only hope to make up for it during the remainder of my lifetime."
Mayor and Mrs. Walsh were astonished at Diana's gesture. "Marchioness Diana, there's no need to apologize. What could have your family done? Your parents were on Earth. Your Uncle—who just lost his wife and son—had to attend to matters at the castle, including protecting Princess Allura. Nobody blames anyone for what happened. Actually, we're all excited to finally see you again after all these years," Mayor Walsh said as Diana stood up to her full height.
"And I'm sure that you're hungry. Enjoy a delicious breakfast with us, then you'll meet the townfolk," Mrs. Walsh said as she gently took one of Diana's arms. "You're being treated to pancakes, potatoes O'Brien, and since we know you don't like pork—we sliced some mushrooms and turned them into veggie bacon. And if I remember Lady Hys like I think I do…she wouldn't approve if you skipped meals."
Diana chuckled as she entered the house. "You remember correctly, Mrs. Walsh. Lady Hys gave me an earful yesterday when I attempted to skip breakfast."
"We can't have her lecturing you, now can we?" Mrs. Walsh said with a chuckle. "Besides, I'm also known for my hospitality skills." About 30 minutes later, Diana and the Walshes finished their breakfast—including cleaning up the kitchen and were outside, giving a quick tour of the village before returning to the field in front of the Mayor's house. The whole village was out and cheered when Diana was introduced.
After sharing her thoughts, Diana was telling the people about the ash committal ceremony in a few days at Smythe House and was about to tell the people that she was giving away supplies at the ceremony when there was a sharp roar in the sky. Diana and the villagers all snapped their heads up to see Red Lion. "Lance?" Diana asked softly before Lance landed the lion next to the Walshes' home. "Wait—did he really find a way to bring supplies with him?" She thought to herself before facing the villagers again.
After he finished landing the lion, Lance opened up the cargo bay before exiting Red Lion through the mouth. The crowd cheered as Lance walked up to Diana. He bowed slightly to her with a smile before whispering. "At your service, My Lady."
"Impressive, Lieutenant. Impressive." Diana responded in a whisper before speaking louder for the villagers. "May I introduce Lieutenant Lance McClain? He's part of the Voltron Force and he pilots the Red Lion—as you saw." The crowd cheered again. "And I believe he was able to deliver some needed supplies as well?"
"Red Lion, at your service! Everything is in the cargo hold and ready to be disbursed." Lance guided Diana and the Walshes to the back of the lion to Red's cargo bay. Lance gave Diana the list before unloading the lion with the help of some of the more muscular villagers. Once everything was unloaded, Lance and Diana helped the Walshes give away the supplies and promised that Smythe House had a few more supplies if needed. As Lance closed the cargo bay, a couple of elder villagers gave him a large box.
"It's not much…but it's our gift to the Voltron Force—for everything you've done for Arus so far."
"Thank you," Lance said with a smile before opening the box. Lance's smile brightened even more once he recognized the sweater patterns and the fact that one was created in each lion color. Lance was even more amazed to see that each sweater looked like it would fit the pilots perfectly. "Thank you for the sweaters!" Lance said again as he took the red sweater and pulled it over his flight suit. The sweater fit perfectly and he didn't miss Diana's open admiration for his newest addition to his wardrobe. "Believe me when I say, we'll always cherish them." The elders cheered before hugging both Diana and Lance, leaving them alone with the Walshes again.
As the Walshes spoke with some of the villagers, Lance gently pulled Diana to his side. If Diana didn't miss his new sweater, Lance didn't miss how tempting Diana looked in her maroon jumpsuit and boots. "I like to think that the last cheer was for our budding romance."
"Lance…we've only known each other for a few days. You probably don't even know if you're in lust or love yet," Diana responded, failing to hide her blush from him. She moved a few steps away only to nearly trip over a thick piece of rope. Lance caught Diana and pulled her back to his side. "Thank you for the save, Lance. You have some quick reflexes."
"You're welcome, Diana. By the way, I do know that I want you in my life," Lance responded, whispering the last part in Diana's ear. Diana was rendered breathless. Before Lance could do anything else, Keith paged him. Sighing, Lance and Diana separated—Diana moved to say goodbye to her pleasant hosts while Lance tucked the box under his arm on his way to the cockpit while checking in with Keith. When the conversations were finished, Lance asked Diana if she wanted a ride back to Smythe House.
"I got my motorcycle. I'll get home safely. I hope the rest of your patrol is uneventful and you'll return back to the castle safely."
"Thank you, Milady," Lance said with a bow before jumping into his cockpit. He waited until Diana was further down the highway to Smythe House before taking off.
As Diana was riding back to Smythe House, she thought about what happened today. She was surprised at how easily Eireann accepted her. Diana was told several times that there was nothing to forgive—and they were just honored to finally meet her again in life. Diana then thought about how impressed she was with Lance and how easily he related to the villagers in general. Then she thought about how Lance's Voltron flight suit fit him like a glove and how even the addition of a hand-knitted sweater only made him look better. "That man is too fine for his own good," Diana said to herself. "And although Lance is very attractive and charming, I'm not going to fall into his charms. Besides, I have only known him for what-3 days and I'm going to be a happily busy lady—public health plans, Voltron Force duties, and finishing up my MPH. I simply do not have the time for love."
Diana made it to the fork in the road where the trail she was using met up with the highway that would lead straight to Smythe House and the old highway that curves around the Davi-Smythe Lands. When she rode to Eireann earlier, she didn't have the chance to check out the field of red flowers that was beckoning her to come over. With a smile, Diana turned off the motorcycle and checked out the field. After admiring the flowers, she noticed a bare patch and sat in it before taking pictures. When she was finished taking a few selfies, Diana returned to the bike and took the highway that went to Smythe House.
The rest of the week went similarly to how Eireann happened. Lance would talk to Coran the night before to learn where Diana was visiting next, followed by meeting up with Coran after practice and breakfast. On the second day, Diana visited Blythe. After talking to Mayor Kelly and her family, Diana spoke with the townspeople and was surprised by their outpouring. The town repeated that although there wasn't anything to forgive, the Smyths were forgiven years ago. To make things lighter and to get the crowd engaged, Mayor Kelly challenged Diana to play darts. Before the competition started, Lance arrived in Red Lion. Diana learned that Lance was a great darts player and he coached Diana to win a couple of games against Mayor Kelly. After a quick lunch, the supplies in Red Lion were distributed and the invitation to visit Smythe House was given. The people of Blythe presented a handmade game set for the Voltron Force and Lance graciously received it.
"Thank you! We'll cherish this gift forever—especially me," Lance replied with a bright smile. With one arm, Lance gently pulled Diana to him before whispering. "When you get back to the castle, I can show you more tricks."
Diana let out a soft gasp and rolled her eyes before responding. "I'm sure the rest of the team can teach me some tricks as well, Lieutenant," Diana whispered back to Lance before turning to smile a picture was taken of her and Lance together.
"I thought we've gone past the point of using ranks in conversation," Lance whispered back as a bouquet of flowers was given to Diana. "Besides, they can't compare to the fun you'll have with me, Marchioness."
"Rogue," Diana said before producing another smile for the camera as Lance kept his arm around Diana's waist and held the set up. "By the way, I still don't know where you or your lips have been." Diana elbowed Lance before walking away to speak with Mayor Kelly more. Lance chuckled before checking with Keith. A few moments later, The Kellys and Diana were finished talking and Lance approached Diana again.
"I just checked in with Keith and I'm about to go back on patrol. Would you like a lift to Smythe House?" Lance asked.
"I'll ride my motorcycle—besides, I don't want to take you out of your way," Diana answered as she put her helmet on and took off for Smythe House. Lance whistled before running to his Lion and continuing his patrol of the area.
On her third day at the Davi-Smythe Lands, Diana purposely left a little later to test if Lance would show up again with supplies. Diana also waited to leave for New Donabate since it was Wednesday and the town usually held its mid-week service in the early afternoon. Diana decided to wear a white & maroon sweater skirt set and white boots. When Diana arrived she was surprised to see Lance land his lion on the open field next to the town's church. With a smile, Lance introduced himself to the townspeople before following Diana into the church.
If Diana thought she was going to be spared from Lance's comments, she was proven wrong during one of the prayers. Lance discretely moved to whisper in Diana's ear. "Do you think they're praying for us to be together? I'll take all the prayers I can." And since they were in church, Diana could only roll her eyes as the prayer ended. After the service, Diana and Lance distributed the supplies for the town and invited the townspeople to the ash committal ceremony at Smythe House. When the supplies were gone, Lance received another gift for the team—this time crystal crosses. Lance thanked the town profusely as Diana waved at Lance before taking off for Smythe City with the Reverend sitting behind her.
Day four's trip was spent at Davi—the second largest city in the Davi-Smythe Lands. After meeting Mayor Molony and the healer, Diana thought she heard Red Lion but was mildly disappointed when she didn't see the lion. When their conversation ended, Mayor Molony and the healer took Diana to the market. Diana had a great time talking to the vendors, sampling food, and enjoying the town. After she brought several things, Red Lion roared before landing in the large field a few blocks away from the market. With a smile, Diana led the citizens to Lance. After introducing Lance to the citizens, the supplies were distributed. After opening the invitation for the ash committal ceremony, Lance was given a set of 5 golden lions to share with the team. Lance graciously thanked the city for the gifts and pulled Diana into the picture after she received another bouquet of flowers. Lance whispered in Diana's ear how realistic the statues looked and stated he loved how all the villagers and townspeople seemed to adore Diana.
"Thank you Lance for the compliment. I adore all the people here," Diana whispered back between pictures.
"And how do you feel about me? Do you adore me?" Lance whispered back.
"Persistent rogue flyboy," Diana whispered back with a smile.
"Persistent rogue space explorer. I'm a few grades above that," Lance whispered still smiling.
"Whatever," Diana said as she rolled her eyes once the last picture was taken. With a smile, Lance checked in with Keith while checking out Diana in her blouse and jeans outfit today. He watched as Diana asked Gaia, the Healer to help with the ceremony before grabbing her helmet and took off for Smythe House. Lance jumped into Red Lion and took off for his patrol a few minutes later.
Finally, day five arrived and Diana was visiting Smythe—the largest city in the region as well as the closest city to Smythe House. Diana was finishing her talk with Mayor Connor and Reverend Kennedy when Lance landed Red Lion on an open field. Both the mayor and the reverend called the city over to the field to meet Lance and get supplies. After a brief speech, Lance opened the cargo bay and made sure that all the supplies were distributed to the people. The people also couldn't believe how much responsibility Diana was willing to shoulder for the town and reminded Diana that her family was forgiven (if forgiveness was even needed) a long time ago. After receiving another gift for the team, Diana pulled Lance to the side where they could be alone under a group of trees.
"Thank you for delivering all of the supplies, Lance," Diana said. "I would never have dreamed that you would find a way to keep your promise to me." Diana leaned against a tree and allowed Lance to move an arm over her head. She also let Lance move a little closer to her body.
"I will do anything for you, Diana," Lance said as he deepened his voice. "I enjoyed being able to visit the Davi-Smythe Lands and help all the citizens get the supplies they needed." Lance took the time to admire Diana's blue form-fitting dress. It stopped just at her knees, allowing Lance a glimpse of her calves and boots. Lance also admired the v-neck that teased just a glimpse of Diana's chest. Finally, Lance admired Diana's eyes and curly hair again.
"Still, finding time to meet with Uncle Coran about my schedule here…that's impressive. Even the effort," Diana complimented as she took a quick appreciative glance at Lance in his flight suit again.
"How impressed are you?" Lance asked, noticing that Diana was enjoying her view of his flightsuit. "Are you impressed enough to—" Lance didn't get to finish his question on how much of a impression he made on Diana. Keith paged Lance on his communicator. As Keith was telling Lance he'll have to cut his patrol short so Hunk and Pidge could update his lion's software. While Lance was listening to Keith explain that Allura was going to finish his patrol shift, Diana managed to place a chaste kiss on his cheek before leaving Smythe on her motorcycle. Lance told Keith he was on his way before waving to the remaining citizens in the park. Lance left for the castle.
Finally the day of the ash committal ceremony came. Diana took in the scene before her on the Smythe House front yard. She was amazed at how well-attended the ceremony was and hoped she had enough supplies and food for the event. All the mayors and their families, the clergy, and even regular people were there to say good-bye to her parents. The skies were clear and the winds were light—it was the perfect conditions for the ceremony. Seeing the people of the Davi-Smythe Lands here to watch Diana fulfill her parents' final wish made her more confident that she'll be able to serve the people under her protection.
Diana cleared her throat and the ceremony started. "I'm so glad that everyone made it here today. As you all know, my mother was the last Marchioness of Smythe. After my mother left and ended up settling on Earth after marrying my father, you were the first Arusians to welcome him. You also treated my father as he was a natural-born Arusian and a Marquis you were proud of. I can never thank you enough for extending your hospitality and treating me even after a prolonged absence," Diana paused and a cheer rang out. Diana smiled before speaking again. "We're here today to allow my parents to finally be in their chosen and final resting place. My parents always planned to return to Arus and live the rest of their lives serving the Davi-Smythe Lands and Arus. They loved this land and even though they're not physically with us, at least their ashes will allow them to move about the land they loved. I'll do the first prayer, then Reverend Kennedy and Healer Gaia will take over the ceremony."
Diana paused before closing her eyes and said the prayer. It was short but she was able to fully express what she wanted to say. Diana thanked her parents before thanking not only Arus' deity—but God as well. Diana also prayed that the land will continue to be protected and that all families in the region will see some prosperity in their lives again. She closed the prayer by saying "Dust to dust, ashes to ashes, we came from the earth and we will return to the earth." When Diana opened her eyes, she could see the crowd in a contemplative mood. "Reverend Kennedy, the ceremony is all yours." Diana said as she stepped aside from the small platform so the reverend could have all the attention.
Reverend Kennedy took a deep breath before speaking. "We're gathered to say good-bye and scatter these ashes. We're also gathered to scatter our blessings in honor to be blessed more." As the Reverend continued the positive message, sharing wisdom and understanding to the crowd. When the minister finished, Gaia took over the ceremony.
"I'm here to help heal all of us together. It's time to let go of your past pain, all of your heartaches, all those broken dreams. Let them all go." Once Gaia was finished, the winds picked up as Diana stepped up on a ladder with her parents' urns. Diana emptied her mother's ashes first and watched as the winds spread the ashes around. And following on Arusian custom, tossed the urn and the top so it would break. Diana did the same for her father's ashes and urn. Diana thought she heard her parents' voices in the wind, but shook her head clear as her feet touched the ground again.
"Now that we all said good-bye to my parents—let's celebrate life!" The crowd cheered before breaking into groups for the meal. Children sat with other children while single adults sat with other single adults and married couples sat with other married couples. Diana sat with the group of honor—which consisted of the mayors and their families. The plates were full of Arusian and Irish traditional foods. The mood lightened considerably and within the hour, Diana passed out the supplies while music started to play. Couples and singles found their way to an area of the yard and started dancing while the kids went to the edge of the woods to play. Diana enjoyed mingling among the citizens in her care while learning a few new dances.
After another hour of dancing, people started to leave the estate. First it was the elderly and families. The next group of people who left were the young married couples. Finally, the last group to leave Smythe House were the singles. Diana was grateful that the event clean-up tasks were handled in pieces so that when it was just Diana and the mayors—there was nothing left to do. Diana spent a few moments thanking the mayors for their help and advised that she'll ask the craftspeople in the towns to help renovate Smythe House. Gaia and Mayor Molony were the last to leave the house.
"Before we go, I made some tea for you. It's a special blend and will help settle you into sleep," Gaia said with a smile.
"Thank you," Diana responded with a smile of her own before taking a sip. Diana was pleasantly surprised that the tea was perfectly sweetened. The tea was also calming. A few moments later, the cup was empty and Gaia took the cup back.
"If you need anything, feel free to let us know," Mayor Molony said as he took Gaia's hand. "Have a good night and sweetest dreams."
"Thank you. Have a good night and sweetest dreams as well," Diana responded as she watched the couple hop on their horse and took the direct path to Smythe. Diana yawned as she turned to enter the house. It didn't take long for Diana to yawn again. Giving up the battle to stay up and read her dad's journal, Diana walked into the study and quickly took off her shoes before stretching out on her cot. A few moments later, Diana's eyes were closed and she was slowly making her way into a dream state.
Diana opened her eyes to a sunny summer day at the Smythe House. The house seemed to sparkle. Diana looked around her to see that she was in the yard, close to the driveway and there was a crowd seated for a ceremony. Curious, Diana walked towards the crowd to see what kind of event was taking place. It didn't take Diana long to see that she was going to witness an Arusian Marriage ceremony. As Diana took a seat in the back row, she found familiar, if not younger, faces in front of her. The first people she recognized were her father and Coran. Diana then noticed a younger King Alfor and Queen Natalie present—with the King standing at the Altar and the Queen standing beside a young Nanny. It finally dawned on Diana that she was witnessing her parents' Arusian wedding!
As the opening notes started for the Arusian Bridal Procession, Diana stood with the rest of the crowd to see her mother helped out of a carriage by Coran. Hyacinth wore a v-neck, off-the-shoulders gown with lace on the hems dyed blue and covered with blue and white pearls. Hyacinth also wore a two-tiered veil with a small tiara with the lace ends sporting the same design as the hems on the dress. Diana watched in amazement as her mother approached the crowd sharing a smile and a whisper with Coran.
When Hyacinth stopped a few feet away from the altar, King Alfor started the ceremony. "We are here to celebrate the union and new titles of Lady Hyacinth Smythe and Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Williams. As this couple unites, let's remember how love can do all things." Alfor paused for a few moments so the crowd contemplated on past and present loves. "To represent the Smythes, who will give Hyacinth away?"
"I, Coran Smythe, older brother and Duke of Davi-Smythe, also a Royal Advisor, will." Alfor nodded his head before speaking again.
"And who agrees with this marriage as a representative of the Williams family?"
"I will. Lillian Williams, mother and AP Advisor of Texas Public Schools," Granny Wills stated with a smile. The smile brightened more when everybody noticed that Diana's father let out a "yay". The crowd laughed before Alfor spoke again.
"Very well. As Monarch of Arus, I, King Alfor bless this union before both the Earth God and our Arus Goddess," Alfor stated. "May the bride and groom stand together." With bright smiles, Alexander and Hyacinth linked arms and fought the urge to kiss in front of the crowd early. "Villagers, townspeople, loved ones—will you do everything you can to keep their marriage strong? To help and not harm?"
"Yes we shall," The crowd responded in unison.
"No man or no woman should pull this union asunder. Where is the wedding vase?" Alfor asked the crowd before a young girl walked up to the altar with the vase in her hands. Alfor thanked the girl for her help before she ran to her mother's legs as the crowd softly laughed for a moment.
"Hyacinth, drink from the left side of the vase," Alfor instructed Diana's mother. Hyacinth smiled before taking a long sip from the vase.
"Alexander, drink from the right side of the vase," Alex followed Alfor's instructions. With a smile, Alfor dropped the vase to shatter it. As the pieces were swept up by Nanny, white blossoms burst into sight from several trees surrounding the estate. The crowd clapped and awed at the blossoms surrounding them.
"It seems that the Gods see this marriage fit. Any children from this union must have their wedding here to continue the blessings." Alfor continued before preparing the vows. "Now it's time for the vows. Hyacinth are you ready?" Hyacinth responded with a cheerful yes before stating her personal vow. Alex accepted the pledge with a bright smile before giving his vow to Hyacinth. Hyacinth accepted Alex's vow before Alexander attempted to kiss Hyacinth. "Not yet, Alexander. Obliviously, someone didn't pay attention to the rehearsal." The crowd laughed as Alexander shot Hyacinth an unrepented smile. "The two families have merged. Before we can pronounce them as spouses, I must grant them their new titles." A sword was presented to Alfor who smiled at the sword's handiwork before tapping the sword against both Hyacinth's and Alexander's shoulders. "I thereby titled you the new Marquess and Marchioness of Smythe. Rise." Hyacinth and Alexander rose and faced each other.
They were given the sword and they held on the handle together before a bright light enveloped the couple. When the light disappeared, the sword was shining bright and their clothes changed into a maroon dress for Hyacinth and a maroon tuxedo for Alexander. The crowd cheered the signs that this union was going to be uniquely blessed. Hyacinth's tiara also changed colors to maroon while Alexander gained a maroon diadem. "I happily present Lt. Colonel and Dr. Williams! You may now kiss the bride!" It only took seconds before Hyacinth and Alexander happily kissed to the crowd's thunderous cheers.
Before Diana knew it, she woke up to see that it was just the middle of the night. Diana smiled about seeing her parents' wedding in the dream and decided no matter what, whenever it was her time to get married, her wedding ceremony was going to be held at Smythe House. With a yawn, Diana closed her eyes and quickly found herself in another dream.
This time, Diana was in Castle Control and the alarms were blaring. She was trying to pinpoint where the attack was in the Davi-Smythe Lands. As she was narrowing the exact area, she saw and felt Lance and the rest of the team launching their lions. As Diana poured over all the details she could tell that the monster was using elemental attacks and it was attacking Eireann. Diana quickly paged the Voltron Force.
"Keith, Lance. The monster appears to be elemental and it's by Eireann."
"It's elemental with what?" Lance asked as he shot his first missiles at it.
"That's something I'm still working on."
"Work faster."
"Look Fly—Oh no! It's coming even closer to the villagers. We need to distract and move the monster away from them!"
To Diana's disappointment, the dream did a sudden time jump and the next thing Diana sees is Lance coming back through the tubes. Once the dais is lowered, Lance quickly grabs Diana and pulls her in for a long, lingering kiss. For whatever reason, Coran didn't look too pleased about the PDA and was held back by Hunk and Keith.
"He can't just kiss her like that. With no sense of modesty at all." Coran protested.
"Well after all, Coran, she did—" Allura started to say but the rest of her statement was muffled by the dream. And as quickly as the dream started, it quickly ended. Sighing in frustration, Diana glanced around and saw that it was still dark outside. Diana quickly closed her eyes and found herself in a third dream—and it appeared to be set in the future while the other dreams were set in the past and present.
Diana immediately noticed that the Smythe House in this dream was exactly how Diana wanted the house to look after all the renovations were done. Before Diana could do anything else in the dream, she was shocked to see a woman who could be her doppelganger. The young woman's hair was longer and slightly wavy. Instead of Diana's dark brown eyes—the eyes were a light brown.
"My lady! How nice to see you. How is the duchess?"
"She's doing fine. Castle life is treating her and my father well. In fact, they're planning to return here as soon as they can." The woman answered and it dawned on Diana that this young woman was probably the Marchioness of Smythe.
"It's funny how life is. Your parents were the first ones born outside of the Davi-Smythe Lands to continue the blessings. Although they arrived—" The townperson was interrupted by the sound of Red Lion landing in front of the house. Diana couldn't see the finer details of the newcomer, but she could see the outline of a shapely, if not possibly older woman.
"You're here? Where's—" The young woman asked the outline, but was interrupted by a possibly older male body.
"Right here, darling!" The male voice said. "We managed to finish things early!"
"You just wanted to keep…" The female voice trailed off before the dream ended abruptly. With a start, Diana sat up from the cot and noticed that it was finally daytime. Diana looked out the window and noticed that Lance's back was facing her as it looked like Lance was taking in the scenery before him. Diana got off of the cot and did a quick stretch routine before closing the drapes in the study so she could change clothes.
Once Diana changed into a pair of black leggings, a form-fiting purple t-shirt, and a pair of black and purple sneakers—she joined Lance outside. "Good morning, Lieutenant," Diana said with a smile. Lance turned around in response and quickly took in Diana's outfit of the day.
"I thought we were past titles, Marchioness?" Lance replied with a smile before taking Diana's hand and giving it a chaste kiss. "Good morning, My Lady." Lance released Diana's hand before looking at the house again. "I could tell that this house was really something before Zarkon attacked."
Diana turned and admired the house for a few moments before turning back to Lance. "Yes, yes it was. I could only hope I can restore the house to its former glory."
"I'm sure that you will, Diana. Besides that, did you enjoy your stay here?"
"Yes and no," Diana started. "But, I'm definitely at peace now."
"That's good," Lance said as he followed Diana back to house. Diana grabbed her duffel bag and made sure she didn't leave any essential items behind. Pleased she had everything, Diana and Lance walked outside before Diana quickly locked both the house and the garage. Lance carefully drove Diana's motorcycle into the cargo hold while Diana took in a few more moments of the estate surrounding her. "I hope you're ready to return to the Castle. Keith's ready to put you through the paces."
Diana was shocked. "So nevermind the fact that he probably knows more about me than I do with all those files the Alliance sent his way."
"Keith likes to judge people's skills personally. Files tend to overlook important details." Lance replied. "Or at least that's what he keeps telling me anyway. I use my instincts about a person. To me, you're already on the team."
Diana nodded in agreement when she heard a familiar masculine voice—her father's distinctive voice. "Show them what you're made of, Di-Di." Diana stopped and looked around only to find it was still just her and Lance.
"Hey! I don't appreciate someone using my father's nickname for me. It's even worse to copy his voice, too," Diana said, stabbing her finger on one of Lance's biceps.
"First of all, I have no idea what's your father's nickname for you is. I also have no idea how your father's voice sounds," Lance said as he captured Diana's hand and kept it between his hands. Then Lance gave Diana a look of concern. "Are you sure everything's ok?"
"Lance, I swear I just heard my father's voice a few moments ago. Didn't you hear anything? I promise I'm not making this up!" Diana responded. Lance nodded in understanding since he personally experienced Allura hearing King Alfor when nobody else did.
"As magical as Arus is, I'm not surprised at all. Allura still talks to her father on occasion in different places in the Castle. I've witnessed a few times when Allura would hear King Alfor's voice but nobody else could. It's probably the same here since you scattered your parents' ashes here." Lance released Diana's hand before placing a chaste kiss on her knuckles.
"Thanks for telling me that, Lance. It's nice to know that I still have all of my senses," Diana said with a sigh of relief. Lance chuckled in response before Diana spoke again. "And with that, I'm ready for the Castle."
"That's the spirit. Just remember I warned you about Keith seriously wanting to put you through the paces," Lance said as they got into Red Lion's cockpit. "And when he does push you, please remember that it's not personal…just business." Diana chuckled as she quickly buckled herself into her chair and let out a cheer as Red Lion took off from the ground.
