16-year-old Rosabella sighed as she looked around her at her home on Clover Island. The island supplied healing herbs and plants all over the world. Her people were farmers who strived for a simple way of life. Most youth grew up and married their sweethearts or whoever their parents arranged for them to marry. They had a bunch of kids and the cycle repeated themselves. The island got visitors and hopefuls who came to the island looking for a slower pace of life.
Rosabella loved her home and her family, but this was not the life she wanted. She wanted something more than to marry like her 11 other siblings and push out babies for the rest of her days. She wanted adventure and excitement. Being the youngest of 12, Rosabella witnessed the things her siblings went through and decided that was not life for her.
"So, you are really going?" 45-year-old Belladonna asked with sadness.
Rosabella turned to the woman with a sad smile. "Yes, mama. I want to be a hunter. What kind of hunter I don't know yet, but I know I want to make something big of myself."
Belladonna sighed and hugged her youngest daughter. The girl was like the wind. Never staying in one place and always up to something. It had been no surprise she chose to become a hunter.
"Very well." Belladonna said and moved back. "If you must go, let up prepare you for the trip ahead."
Rosabella looked confused before following her mother into the Kitchen where an old man stood with a black backpack. The girl stared in shock.
"This is a special backpack that I have made you. I taught you to fight and to use nen to prepare you for the hunter exam. This is my final gift." The man said with a smile at the girl.
"Master Galligan, this is too much." Rosabella said with a sigh.
Master Galligan laughed. "I am the one who decided that. I did my duty to the hunter's association. I have no issue with cheating a little for some of their unfair rules."
Belladonna smiled. "Your clothes for traveling have already been packed in it. I have also packed food, water, medicine and other supplies I thought you might need."
Rosabella rubbed a hand over her eyes trying not to cry. "Mama."
The door opened and a man walked in. "Flower, it's time to go. The boat for the hunter exam will be here in 30 minutes."
Belladonna sighed. "Yes, my husband. We are just saying goodbye."
One hour later, Rosabella stood on the boat waving goodbye to her family. All 11 siblings, their spouses, children and her parents had shown up to see her off. She was off to the hunter's exam.
