It was another day in the Inkwell Isles when Ember is at the Inkwell Isle School for Supernaturally Gifted Youth. Ember and her friends were in Mrs. Atkinson's classroom learning about the usual subjects.
"Alright everyone, put down your books. I have a big announcement to make." Mrs. Atkinson announced.
"Ooh! Are we going outside?" Cliff the bigfoot asked.
"No." Mrs. Atkinson answered.
"Are we going to have a party?" Marette the siren asked.
"No." Mrs. Atkinson answered.
"Are we gonna have a spelling bee?" Abel the cherub asked.
"No. We did that in September. Are you all finished guessing?" Mrs. Atkinson asked, losing patience.
Everyone nodded.
"Good. Next week, we're going to have a Career Day. And I have asked some of your parents to volunteer to visit their jobs and learn about them." Mrs. Atkinson announced.
"Who's volunteered?" Isfrid the ice sorceress asked.
"The parents who volunteered are… Mr. Boulderstone who works at the garden shop. Mrs. Frostbite works in the weather control at the North Pole. And finally, we have Mr. Airway who works at the bank." Mrs. Atkinson answered.
All the kids groaned, thinking their jobs were going to be boring.
"Now children, it is good for you all to learn what some careers are like." Mrs. Atkinson reminded them.
Just then, Professor Cyfrin, the school headmistress enters the classroom.
"Professor Cyfrin, what can I do for you?" Mrs. Atkinson asked.
"Pardon my interruption, but I just received a phone call from Mr. Airway from the bank. His bank is temporarily shut down to have the carpets replaced. He can no longer do the Career Day." Professor Cyfrin announced.
"Oh dear. Isn't there anyone else who could fill in for Mr. Airway for the last stop?" Mrs. Atkinson.
Professor Cyfrin thought for a moment.
"There is… one person." Professor Cyfrin hesitantly answered.
In her office, Professor Cyfrin got her telephone, dialed a number and took a deep breath.
Down in the depths of Hell, the Devil was in his bubble filled bathtub wearing cucumbers in his eyes relaxing on his own. Just then, Henchman enters with a telephone.
"Duh, boss phone call from the school." Henchman announced.
The Devil's face dropped.
"Ugh. This better be important. I hope Ember's not in trouble." The Devil grumbled as he took the telephone.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Devil. This is Professor Cyfrin speaking." Professor Cyfrin greeted.
"Professor, I'm very busy. What do you want?" The Devil asked impatiently.
"Well Mr. Devil, we've had one of the parents call out for Career Day next week. So, would it be possible if you could fill in for the last visit on the field trip?" Professor Cyfrin asked.
The Devil sat up as his cucumbers fell off his eyes.
"Wait, you're asking me if I could show Ember's class what my career is like? At the casino?" The Devil asked.
"Well… yes. We want you to show the children how you run your casino. But I want you to promise me you will not let them play with your machines and take their souls or money. Those are my conditions. Are you interested?" Professor Cyfrin asked.
The Devil paused for a moment.
"Wait, you want me to show Ember and her class what my job is like?" The Devil asked, trying to understand.
"Yes, Mr. Devil." Professor Cyfrin answered.
"Hmm… I'll do it." The Devil said after briefly thinking about it.
"Very well, I have you down for Career Day." Professor Cyfrin said, writing it down on paper.
"What do I have to do?" The Devil asked.
"Well, we'll show up at your casino and you will explain to the children what you do at your casino and how running your business works. But I want you to use money instead of souls. Also, you mustn't allow the children to play any of your games." Professor Cyfrin instructed.
"Fine. I'll just give them the grand tour of my beloved casino." The Devil hesitantly agreed.
"Jolly good. We'll see you next week. Good day." Professor Cyrin said then hung up the phone.
"Oh boy. What am I gonna do? I gotta prepare the casino for those kids!" The Devil exclaimed.
"Duh, don't worry boss. We'll have the casino ready for the children for Career Day." Henchman assured his boss.
"Good. You and King Dice get the casino ready." The Devil ordered.
"Yes boss!" Henchman agreed.
Henchman leaves his boss to continue bathing. He heads to the casino using the elevator.
At the casino, King Dice was supervising all the games, making sure no one was cheating and enjoying themselves.
"Ah, business is good today." King Dice sinisterly said to himself.
Just then, the elevator arrives at the casino, startling King Dice.
"Uh oh…" King Dice nervously said, fearing he was in trouble.
Henchman exits the elevator and approaches King Dice.
"Duh, King Dice, Ember's class at school is coming here for Career Day next week. The boss needs us to get everything prepared for the kids!" Henchman explained.
"What?! The boss's kid and her class are coming here for a field trip?!" King Dice asked shockingly.
"Uh… yes." Henchman hesitantly answered.
"But how do we make this kid friendly and educational? Not really my style!" King Dice protested.
"Duh, I know King Dice, but it'll just be for one day. And we gotta make sure the kids don't play the games! Orders from the headmistress!" Henchman explained.
"Ugh! That cranky birdbrain!" King Dice groaned.
King Dice orders his workers to get to work preparing the casino for Career Day.
After school, Ember and her friends wait outside the school for their parents.
"Wow Ember, your dad's volunteered to fill in my dad." Abel said.
"Uh… yeah." Ember hesitantly answered.
"I wonder what your dad's gonna do? He's not gonna steal our souls, is he?" Marette asked.
"Marette!" Isfrid scolded.
Cliff shuddered at the thought of his soul stolen.
"Don't worry Cliff. He wouldn't take our souls." Isfrid assured cliff.
"Really?" Cliff asked.
"Of course. Father has been instructed not to take anyone's souls. Besides, he knows you're all my friends. He wouldn't think of taking your souls." Ember added.
Cliff smiled at Ember.
"Aw, thanks Ember." Cliff thanked.
Just then, the elevator emerged from the ground. Henchman opened the door with the Devil with him.
"There you are Ember. Time to go home." The Devil called.
"I gotta go. I'll see you guys on Monday!" Ember said as she joined her father in the elevator.
"Bye Ember!" All her four friends called.
Henchman closed the door and the elevator disappeared in the ground. They arrive in Hell and head to the conference room. The Devil sat in his chair and Ember sat in her chair.
"Ember, your headmistress called me earlier. She wants me to fill in for that Career Day field trip since that bank idiot called out." The Devil explained.
"Yeah. Mrs. Atkinson told me and the class." Ember said.
"So, we need to get the casino ready for that field trip. So, I ordered King Dice and Henchman to get everything ready. But we need to figure out how to keep your classmates from touching the machines. You know it's grownups only." The Devil said.
"I know father. I don't want anyone's souls taken." Ember said.
"Besides, the headmistress would kill me if that happened." The Devil added.
"Father, you'll give us a guided tour around the casino, explain your rules such as no touching your machines, explain the importance of your casino for economic growth, and you explain how you run the business without revealing trade secrets. Maybe inspire us to go into business industry." Ember explained.
"Hmm. Perhaps I need to prepare myself when I lead you and your classmates on the tour." The Devil said.
"You can rehearse with me. Pretend my class is here and you can show me around." Ember suggested.
"Great idea. Also, I'd like for you to go to the casino and maybe give pointers to King Dice about the tour." The Devil said.
"Yes, father." Ember agreed.
Ember teleported herself to her father's casino. She looks around and noticed the imps and cards working on setting up the casino. Ember approached one of King Dice's playing cards.
"Have you seen King Dice?" Ember asked.
The playing card pointed in a direction.
"Thanks." Ember thanked.
The playing card nodded as Ember headed in that direction. She finds King Dice in his office looking over the profits. A door opened as King Dice gasped, only to notice Ember entering.
"Oh, it's you kid. Can I help ya?" King Dice said, making himself presentable.
"Father wanted me to help out with getting the casino for my class." Ember answered.
"Oh, great. Come with me." King Dice said as he got up from his desk.
King Dice takes Ember's hand and takes her to the main room with all the machines and customers playing.
"Look kid, I know your class is coming, but this whole 'kid-friendly' and 'educational' thing isn't our thing around here. You know your daddy's gotta collect souls and money." King Dice explained.
"I know. It'll be just for one day though. You could just explain your role as manager of the casino and why your job is important." Ember said.
"Well, my job is to make sure everything's running smoothly, I make sure everyone's having a good time, and above all I make sure nobody's cheating. Plus, I put on a killer show with my singing and dancing." King Dice explained his job.
"Yeah, you had a radio show years ago then father had you running the casino." Ember said, knowing his history.
"You know it kid." King Dice said proudly.
"Just make sure none of my classmates touch the machines. They're off limits to us." Ember reminded him.
"You got it. I'll make sure none of your friends touch the machines." King Dice said with a wink.
"Thanks." Ember thanked.
King Dice and Henchman get to work planning the tour for Ember's class with her help. A while later, Ember noticed an empty area behind a large curtain away from the main room. She goes behind the curtain and notices an abandoned game area.
"Huh. I don't remember this area." Ember said to herself.
"That's because it's closed off." King Dice said as he entered the abandoned area.
"Oh. What is this place? And why was it abandoned?" Ember asked.
"This kid was supposed to be a daycare area where customers could dump their kids while they go play on the machines. Unfortunately, it didn't work out since no one would dump their kids here." King Dice explained.
Ember noticed the daycare had prison bars like a jailhouse and scary images of demons painted on the walls, noticing why it was abandoned.
"Oh." Ember said.
"Yeah, come on kid. There's nothing for you here." King Dice said as he took Ember's hand and led her away from the abandoned daycare.
Just then, the Devil appeared in the casino and approached King Dice and Ember.
"Hey, hey boss!" King Dice greeted.
"Is everything ready for the tour?" The Devil asked.
"Yes boss. We've got everything ready!" King Dice proudly answered.
"Excellent. By the way, why are you two at that old dump?" The Devil asked.
"Oh, your kid was exploring that old daycare you shut down. No harm done boss." King Dice answered.
"I see. Come along Ember. Time to go home." The Devil said as he took his daughter's hand.
The Devil takes Ember back to Hell. They both enter the dining area to eat dinner together.
"So, Ember. How'd it go with King Dice?" The Devil asked.
"It was great father. He showed me around and we talked about what we can do and can't do." Ember answered.
"Wonderful darling." The Devil complimented.
"I did notice that abandoned daycare before you came." Ember admitted.
"Oh yes. I thought of putting a daycare at one point, but it didn't work out." The Devil said.
"Why not?" Ember asked.
"Apparently, it was too 'scary' and unfit to be a daycare. What do those stupid whiny oversensitive parents know?" The Devil grumbled.
"Oh." Ember said.
Ember continued eat dinner with her father until it was time for their radio show. Ember sat on her father's lap on his throne, and both enjoyed the show together. Ember thought about the abandoned daycare and wanted to change it.
Later, the Devil tucked Ember into bed as her demon kitten Umbra jumped up on her bed to join her.
"Hey, father?" Ember asked.
"Yes, dearie?" The Devil said.
"Do you think I could… um. Use that abandoned daycare and turn it into something else for Career Day?" Ember asked.
"What do you mean by that?" The Devil asked.
"I was thinking maybe I could make that abandoned daycare more… fun and exciting for my classmates? Isfrid told me that most Career Days are very boring." Ember answered.
"Hmm. Maybe. I'll think about it. In the meantime, sleep tight my little princess." The Devil said.
He kisses Ember goodnight, petted Umbra and leaves her room to go to bed. The next day Ember decided to carry out her plan at the abandoned daycare.
After a few days, the day of Career Day had finally arrived. Ember and her classmates prepare to go on their field trip. They all enter the bus with Mrs. Atkinson and Professor Cyfrin. They make their first stop to Mr. Boulderstone's Garden Shope in the mountains.
Their surroundings are much bigger than an average building. The giant bigfoot comes out to greet the class and shows the class around the garden shop and how he runs his business. The class gets bored until Mr. Boulderstone gifts each student a potted flower.
For their next stop, the bus magically teleports to the North Pole and the children dress themselves warm. They enter the Weather Control Center where Isolde Frostbite works.
Isolde demonstrates how she and her workers control the weather for beneficial purposes for the climate in the Inkwell Isles.
Once again, Ember and her class are bored. At the end of the tour, Isolde gifts the children with an outdoor thermometer.
Finally, it was time for the class to make their final stop: the Devil's Casino. Ember hoped the tour will go well. The children get off the bus where King Dice come to greet them.
"Hello children! Welcome to the Devil's Casino!" King Dice announced as he made his grand entrance.
The children look a little scared as Ember tried to calm them down.
"You kids are in for a real treat today! I'm gonna show you all the wonders of the casino business! Follow me!" King Dice said.
King Dice leads Ember and her class into the casino as Mrs. Atkinson and Professor Cyfrin followed. They all enter the lobby as King Dice turned and faced the class.
"Now kids, before we get this tour started, I'm gonna have to lay down a few rules. Rule one: No wandering off, stay with the class! Now if you gotta to use the bathroom, I'll have Henchman escort you." King Dice explained the first rule.
Henchman arrived and waved to the kids.
"Rule two: no touching any of the machines! Unless of course… you wanna lose your souls!" Kind Dice warned in a scary-like way.
The class started to get scared as Professor Cyrin stepped in front if King Dice.
"Calm down children, Mr. Dice is just exaggerating. Aren't you Mr. Kice?" Professor Cyfrin assured the children and scolded King Dice.
"What birdbrain? My point is no touching the machines or anything!" King Dice argued.
"You could've simply put it that way." Professor Cyfrin sternly said.
King Dice grumbled at Professor Cyfrin then continued.
"Rule three: No talking! If you have any questions, just raise your hand!" King Dice finished.
"Thank you, Mr. Dice." Professor Cyfrin thanked.
"Now, let's get going!" King Dice said with a big smile.
He led the children into the main room where all the gambling machines were displayed as customers were playing. Henchman kept an eye on them, making sure they didn't touch the machines.
"Now, here is where is the magic and fun happen. Our customers come here every day hoping to win some big bucks and try their luck. Some get lucky and some don't. But it's beneficial because our casino helps our economy and tourism in the Inkwell Isles. Folks gotta unwind and have some fun once in a while. That's what we're here for!" King Dice explained.
Ember gave King Dice a thumbs up in the crowd.
"Right this way kids!" King Dice said as he led them in another direction.
He leads them into a security surveillance room where all the rooms and machines are closely monitored.
"Right here kids is where my security team checks all the customers, making sure there are no cheaters or troublemakers." King Dice explained.
Marette raised her hand.
"Yes, my little mermaid?" King Dice asked and pointed to Marette.
"What happens if someone get caught cheatin'?" Marette asked.
"Ah! An excellent question! Now, you probably heard all those dark rumors we take the cheaters to the back and do… questionable things to them." King Dice said.
All the kids nervously nodded. Professor Cyfrin glared at King Dice.
"Well, those rumors are… not true! We simply kick them out of the casino, their winnings are forfeited and are banned for life!" King Dice said excitedly.
All the kids sigh of relief except for Ember, who knew the dark truth.
"Alright kids, this way! You get to see… the entertainment!" King Dice said and led the kids to the stage.
All the kids take their seats in the audience as King Dice got out his deck of cards.
"Now, I know what you're thinking. This stage is empty! Well, yes, it is right now. But watch this!" King Dice said excitedly.
He shuffles his cards and throws 10 of his cards on the stage and they transform into his musicians, shocking the whole class. The band started playing jazz music.
"And now, for your delight, I'd like to sing you all a special song." King Dice said as he grabbed a microphone.
King Dice started singing the song 'Roll the Dice' as he stepped on the stage and started dancing. The children are reeled in to the song. Mrs. Atkinson is swooned by King Dice, to Professor Cyfrin's unamusement.
King Dice finishes the song and strikes a pose. All the children cheered for King Dice as he took a bow.
"Thank you, kids! There's lots of fun things to do at casinos!" King Dice said.
Just then, a black smoke started entering on the stage, making the class gasp.
"Oh! Looks like someone's come to join us! You know him as the Lord of Darkness, Old Scratch, Mr. S, the Big D! The one and only… the Devil!" King Dice announced.
The Devil magically appeared on the stage in his fancy salmon outfit and struck a pose with his pitchfork.
"THE DEVIL!" A kid yelled loudly.
All the children screamed at the Devil's presence as he smiled, enjoying the sound of screams. Professor Cyfrin stood up and once again calmed the children.
"Now, now children. He's just here to introduce himself. He is under oath not to take anyone's souls." Professor Cyfrin assured them.
All the children sighed of relief.
"Do carry on Mr. Devil." Professor Cyfrin instructed the Devil.
"Thank you, Professor." The Devil thanked as he stepped off the stage in front of the children.
"Greetings children. I am the founder and owner of this beautiful establishment! I made all of this possible!" The Devil announced.
"Oooh!" All the children awed in amazement.
"Thank you. One of your fellow classmates is my daughter. Ember, would you please come here?" The Devil asked.
Ember joins her father as he wrapped his arm around her.
"Before we end this tour, my daughter's got a special surprise for all of you." The Devil announced.
"What is it, Ember?" Isfrid asked as all the children started to get excited.
"Follow me everyone!" Ember said.
Ember leads her class to the abandoned daycare by the curtain.
"Alright everyone, for the grand finale, I give you…" Ember said as she used telekinesis on the curtains to open them.
Before everyone's eyes, Ember presents a children's area with kid's games with prizes of toys and candy. Everyone gasped in excitement.
"Who wants to have fun?" Ember asked.
"ME!" All the kids yelled.
The class all enter the children's area and started playing the games and won tickets to trade for prizes.
"That was a brilliant idea Ember. Making an arcade in your father's casino." Mrs. Atkinson complimented.
"Thank you, Mrs. Atkinson." Ember thanked.
"Yes, my dear. It was indeed brilliant. Now, you and your classmates aren't bored." Professor Cyfrin added.
"Thank you, Professor." Ember thanked.
"Ember, why don't you join your friends?" The Devil asked.
"Okay, father!" Ember said and joined her friends playing games and winning tickets.
"Well, Mr. Devil, I must commend you for your tour. Mr. Dice did a fantastic job leading the class around and explaining his job." Professor Cyfrin complimented.
"Why, thank you, Professor. I really outdid myself." The Devil bragged.
After the kids finish playing and winning prizes, it was time to return to the school. Mrs. Atkinson takes the children outside the casino where the bus was waiting for them. The Devil and King Dice stood outside.
"Alright children, what do we say to Mr. Devil and Mr. Dice?" Mrs. Atkinson asked.
"Thank you!" All the kids answered.
"Thank you all for coming. Hopefully we'll see you again when you're older." The Devil said.
The children enter the school bus along with Mrs. Atkinson and Professor Cyfrin and departed the casino and returned to the school.
The class returned to the school as they were talking about how much fun they had at the casino. Ember felt proud of herself for helping her father and King Dice with the field trip.
Later after school, Ember and her friends wait outside for their parents to pick them up. Ember teleports back to Hell to pick up her demon kitten Umbra and her flying broomstick. Then she heads over to her human family's house to spend the weekend with them.
At dinner, Ember tells her human parents and siblings about her field trip at the garden shop, weather control and the casino while Gwen fed her newborn son Noah.
"Then, I unveiled my biggest surprise for my class. I turned the abandoned daycare into an arcade where they could play games and win prizes without losing their souls. Everyone was happy with their prizes. We had a ton of fun." Ember finished.
"That's wonderful, Ember." Gwen complimented as she finished feeding Noah.
"Sounds like you kids had fun today." Clarence added.
"Thanks mama, papa." Ember thanked.
"You made Career Day a lot of fun. Unlike when they did Career Day at my school." Priscilla said.
"At least it beats being in a boring classroom all day." Timothy said.
"Now Tim, you don't just stay in a boring classroom all day. You have recess, friends to play with, lunch, gym and lots of other fun things to do." Gwen pointed out.
"Yeah, I guess so." Timothy said.
"Can we play games and win prizes at the casino?" Joy asked.
"No, sweetie. The casino is strictly forbidden. I don't want any of you losing your souls like your cup uncles nearly lost theirs many times." Gwen pointed out.
"Wasn't it mostly Uncle Cuphead who nearly lost his soul until you and Uncle Mugman saved him many times?" Priscilla asked.
"That's right dear." Gwen answered.
"Alright everyone, what do you say we try out the new television your mom and I recently got?" Clarence asked.
"Yeah!" All the children exclaimed.
The family sat down together and turned on the new television and watched some brand-new shows together. Umbra laid in Gwen arms holding Noah, purring next to him.
After Gwen and Clarence tuck all their children to bed, they both take Noah into their bedroom, put him to bed in his cradle and then go to bed.
Ember was sleeping with Umbra and her broomstick until she felt someone trying to wake her up.
"Psst! Ember! Wake up!" Priscilla whispered.
"What?" Ember asked, struggling to wake up.
"Ember, let's go to your arcade at the casino!" Timothy added.
"You heard what mama said! She said no!" Ember protested.
"Please Ember? Please?" Joy asked, making a cute face.
"Joy, not the face. What is Aunt Chalice teaching you?" Ember asked.
After a few seconds, Ember finally gives in.
"Ugh! Fine! But just this once! If my father catches us, he'll kill me and tattle to mama and papa!" Ember warned.
"Got it!" Her three siblings agreed.
Ember gets out of bed, teleports herself and her siblings to the arcade in the casino. Ember magically awakens the games. Joy squealed excitedly as she runs to play in the ball pit to play. Timothy plays with a shooter game while Priscilla played a pinball machine with Ember.
Afterwards, Ember teleported herself and her siblings back home and go back to bed before their parents caught them. Ember felt proud of herself for making a school event fun and exciting for her classmates, making her father proud and forming a bond with King Dice.
