INNOVATOR

-Dev Sagittarius Black

~~Chapter 31: Forgiveness is a virtue~~

.

Returning from his small meeting with the captured Malfoy, Harry swiftly went straight towards the owlery. It was a place that he had visited a lot in his starting days as an Innovator. The sudden popularity coupled with lack of means of communication helped him gain an audience with the school owls that resided here.

It was this regular trip to the owlery that gave him the idea to create 'The Mail-check' boxes. After that, Dobby and Sirius came into his life, which helped him reduce the mail work to a bare minimum of two-three letters a day since Sirius took care of most of his mail while Dobby removed the fanmail that he received.

Inside the owlery, he ignored the pungent smell and focused on finding a common barn owl that no one would suspect. He saw a brown feathered one that was near the door and quickly tied the letter to it.

"Give this to Draco Malfoy in Slytherin, alright?" Harry asked the owl and received an affirming hoot in return.

'This will reach that idiot tomorrow morning during breakfast, which means he'll be ready by dinner time tomorrow,' Harry thought as he moved out of the smelly building, and took a route towards another one that had something he wanted.

When he entered the Hospital wing, he was surprised to see that his brother had been shifted from his previous location on the first floor's secluded corner to the ground floor's main hall. He didn't know who did this or why, but presumed that maybe it was done because Alan didn't need to be kept tied down to a bed anymore.

The other occupants of the hall were either sleeping or having a conversation with their friends, so they didn't give Harry's arrival more than a cursory glance. Even Alan was talking with his two friends, Ron and Hermione, the trio that had been once called 'The Golden Trio' by Hogwarts population.

There was someone else in the hall that Harry wanted to meet, but she was currently entertaining her friend and someone who looked like a younger version of herself. Their eyes met, and Harry couldn't help but smile at the way Daphne's lips twitched a bit before she controlled herself.

Some commotion from Alan's bed stopped everyone and they watched the youngest male Weasley shout as he glared at Alan. The anger wasn't new to anyone in that room as they knew that Ronald Weasley had issues controlling his temper, but it was quite surprising to see the boy angry at his so-called best friend, Alandale Potter.

"I don't know what has happened to you, Alan. But you mark my words, it's definitely changing you and not for the better!" Weasley shouted at Alan, "I came to meet you because you had surprisingly disappeared, and this is how you treat your only friend?"

"Ron, I didn't mean it like—"

"NO! NO NEED TO SAY ANYTHING NOW!" Ron got up from his chair so fast that it fell back on the floor with a loud thump. "We came to meet you after you disappeared for a bloody month! And this is what you have to say to me?! What a friend you have been, Potter!"

The commotion caused by the two fourth years was enough to get Madam Pomfrey's attention who immediately intervened and promptly kicked the redhead out of the hospital wing, going as far as to deduct points and give him a detention. Who knew the school nurse had such power? But it made sense since she was also a staff member who taught medicine to interested people in their seventh years.

Hermione apologized on her friend's behalf before she gave Alan a quick hug and departed from the wing. Probably in search of the youngest male Weasley.

After Hermione's departure, things swiftly returned to how they were and the dull sound of hushed conversations reappeared in the hall of the Hospital wing.

Harry took this moment to approach his brother's bed who was getting another check-up by Madam Pomfrey to see whether Weasley's outburst had any detrimental effect on his health or not.

"You came." Alan smiled a bit. "The way you had left that day, I wasn't sure you'd return."

"I had promised, and I always keep my promises," Harry said as he sat on the bedside chair. "Madam Pomfrey, can we please have some privacy? This is a private conversation."

Pomfrey frowned a bit before she gave a nod. "You can, but Alan has already had enough visitors, so I want you two to be done in a few minutes. You can return later in the evening, or maybe wait till Wednesday because he will be discharged by then."

Harry nodded, and flicked his wand to create a privacy bubble around Alan's bed when the nurse left. The two boys didn't say anything for some time, content just looking at each other.

This might be the first time when the Potter brothers were about to hold a proper conversation that wouldn't have the elder Potter ignoring or straightaway cursing the younger one, while said younger one shouted and acted like a prat.

"So… how are you?"

"I think I should be the one asking you that." Harry frowned. "But, to answer you, I am good. Feel better since I just got a clean check from the health guild and got those Runes of Potentia removed."

"They are those weird things that cause your eyes to glow, right?" Alan asked, "And then, those silver vines cover your arms and legs. I think I remember seeing them become golden too, once."

"They used to be in three levels and each level triggered a whole set of… you know what? Nevermind that. Madam Pomfrey said that I don't have much time and I would much rather get the main topics cleared out first. However, I am a bit curious as to how you have been so civil towards me ever since you woke up."

"Like I told you before, Harry, I don't know how long I was in my mindscape. Time works differently there, I think." Alan frowned a bit before he continued, "But I had nothing else to do other than watch my memories, and in almost all of them, I saw what an utter prat I had been. Making funny poses, giving interviews just for popularity when I didn't even know shit about the actual thing… you get what I mean?"

"A product of your nurture." Harry nodded.

"What?"

"You got molded by the way others wanted to see you, it happens quite a lot actually," the Innovator answered, "In fact, the Japanese believe that each person has three masks: First one is their public mask – the one that they show everyone, and the way they behave in public. Second one is your family mask — that's how you behave with everyone who is close to you. Lastly, the third one is your private mask — the face that no one other than you knows about."

They were silent for sometime before Alan released a deep breath and did the unthinkable.

He hugged Harry.

The Innovator's first instinct was to slam a banishing hex on the boy, to throw the boy into the far wall. Injuries be damned! But then, he felt something wet on his shoulders and the younger boy sniffled.

"I am sorry," the whispered words meant more than anything to the shocked Innovator. "I am sorry for being like that, Harry. I will understand if you don't forgive or forget, you did say that you were never good with doing that. Still, if possible, I would like to start things from scratch."

"Alandale—"

"You don't have to answer me right away, Harry." Alan released the surprised boy. "Take your time. Don't feel pressured into this. I don't want you to feel responsible for anything related to me anymore. You have already done more than what I would expect from a guy who I had treated the way I did. Thanks for all the times you saved my life."

Alan hesitated and added, "You are the best, you were the brother that I needed but never deserved."

Harry didn't say anything, he just looked at the boy's teary face and gave a single nod. "I won't say that forgiving and forgetting are my things, Alan, you just said that. So, don't expect things to suddenly be better between us, but I'll try my best to actually be a brother rather than just a future Lord of our houses whose sole job is to keep you alive."

After Alan wiped his tears and got his haywire emotions under control, he looked at Harry again. The Innovator's posture was more relaxed and a bit more laid back in the chair than when he had entered the wing. 'It's not much… but it's an improvement,' Alan thought with a small smile.

"So, do you still want to talk about that memory or do you want to rest now?" Harry asked the boy but before he could've answered their privacy was intruded by the mediwitch.

"I think I have already said what I wanted to say to you the most." The Boy-Who-Lived nodded. "I do want a few answers, there are many things about our childhood that are still uncleared… but they can wait for now."

"Alright, the rest of the talk can wait until you are well." Harry stood from his chair. "I will see you later."

"Harry! Wait!" Alan stopped his brother, "I think there's something else that you should do before you leave."

"What?"

"There's someone else who you should visit while you are here," Alan said with a small smile and pointed towards the bed that was in the far corner. Harry was a bit surprised when his brother pointed at none other than Daphne.

"You want me to meet her?"

Alan nodded. "Hermione and Ron heard things about what had happened in Hogsmeade after the battle and they told me. There's also the fact that you have only gone to Hogsmeade once, and that was with her. Also—"

"That was work related," Harry interrupted but was immediately shushed.

"Oh yeah… sure," Alan said in a way that said he didn't believe it at all. "Anyways, it's up to you. Still, I want you to visit her, it's painfully obvious that she likes you and the way that you have not cursed me or left straightaway, tells me that you do have some feelings for her. So, why not act on those feelings?"

His brother's words strangely enough reminded him of his talk with the Artelean commander of Death who had trained him for five-and-a-half years in the Realm of Death. Both of them had said almost the same thing, and even Death itself had said something similar.

"When did you of all people become an expert in relationships?" Harry gave a small smile. "Last I remember you were the block-headed idiot who wasn't liked by anyone of the opposite sex."

"Oi! No need to get personal there," Alan cried but there wasn't any real barb in his words. "Anyways, this is about you, big guy, not me. Are you going to speak with her or not?"

Harry thought about the words as he contemplated the implications of such an action. Was he really ready to accept others in his life? He had started accepting Blaise, and even Cho as well as Fleur, but they weren't Daphne. They were his friends. Close, yes, but friends.

They were not someone who was intimately attached with him, they were not the people who expected him to break the walls that he had built around himself for almost a decade. But these were trivial issues since the two groups could be merged and placed in the same category of people that he wanted to protect.

What he really wanted to know were answers to an entirely different set of questions. And these weren't too many, more like just three questions that he wanted to know.

Would The Council use her against him like it used his mother? If that happens, will he be able to protect the one girl that he would want a future with? And most of all… did a monster like him deserve a future with someone like her?

"What are you thinking so hard about?" Alan interrupted his thoughts. "It's a simple decision, if you want to do it then just go there, take the seat and talk with her. If you don't, then the doors are still open, and she won't know that we had this conversation."

"You don't know how this would impact her safety, Alan." Harry sighed. "There's a reason why I choose to keep everyone at bay, and I don't know what would happen if I stopped doing that now."

"Will this… reason of yours stop her from coming closer to you?" Alan asked the boy and saw him deny that with a shake of his head. "Then, you already know the answer. Just stop being an idiot like I did. You are just afraid of something that doesn't exist. I know the feeling, I was like you too. Fear is something that I know better than you, Harry. And this is just that: Fear."

"You were afraid of something?" Harry asked.

"Not something but someone." Alan smiled. "I was afraid of you, I have always been afraid of you in one way or another, but that stopped when I watched the memories and saw that all you did was protect me whenever I got struck. That gave me enough courage to apologize to you today. And since one Potter received enough courage to change, I want the other one to do the same."

Harry wasn't surprised by his brother's confession, it was a calculated probability on his part that his brother might be a bit afraid of him. Especially after their fiasco in his second year when he had sued Alan for his attempts to defame him. That hadn't ended well for the younger Potter and since then their differences never stopped.

'But now we are talking like actual brothers… something that had never been possible before.' Harry thought. 'Well… it's not like others haven't seen it anyways, and if the Council really started to use my people against me again, then I would just have to be strong enough to protect them.'

"Alright," Harry nodded. "I won't say that I am ready for a relationship right now, not with everything that's going around us at the moment, but I will give it my best."

"I don't think you need to do anything else either," Alan shrugged, "And since she already likes you, who knows you might become a real couple soon. At least she is hot, you could do a lot worse in that department."

"Repeating myself again, when did you become a genius in matters related to girls?" Harry smirked.

"Hey, I still don't understand them," his brother admitted sheepishly, grinning. "But I had heard the boys in my dorm discuss them, and Daphne Greengrass is a hot topic. Perfect ten in my opinion."

Harry just shook his head. "Alright. That's enough about categorizing her, I don't want you to do that ever again, understood?"

"Already acting like a jealous boyfriend, are we?" Alan asked cheekily but stopped when he saw Harry's eyes glow green.

"Alright! alright! Just kidding! No need to get all antsy… sheesh!" He gave another grin. "Now, go away. Talk to her and see where it takes you, alright?"

Harry chuckled as he removed the privacy bubble around the redhead's bed. The two were surprised to see almost everyone in the hospital wing looking at them as if they were aliens.

"What?!"

That single syllable from Harry was strong enough to get everyone back to their own devices and leave the Potter brothers for now. The two knew that rumors of their supposed reunion would soon fill the Hogwarts rumor mill, but none of them cared about it. Alan simply waved to his brother who went towards the corner bed occupied by Daphne, Tracey and Astoria.

"...and then Vector gave us a three foot long essay on the numerical equations behind the tenth principle of the infinite number theorem. Can you believe it, Daph? THREE FOOT LONG ESSAY!" Astoria whined.

"That's nothing compared to what she makes me do, y'know." Tracey chuckled. "Don't give me that look, little Greengrass, this is your third year just wait till you reach your own OWL year."

"Heh, I will be super smart by that time," Tori replied. "Vector says I have a talent of identifying the mistakes in the equations faster than anyone else she had seen, I bet even Potter couldn't beat me when he was my age."

"I am sure of that too."

"I know, right?!" Tori turned towards the new voice with a grin. "But don't tell that to–" She stopped when she realized that the new voice that had answered her was none other than Harry Potter himself.

"I- I mean… uh…" She looked towards Alandale's bed in the direction of the chair that was empty now. Then, she looked towards her sister who was suppressing her smirk and Tracey who was openly giggling.

She punched Tracey in the arm.

"OW! OW!" Tracey cried, "That hurt! You little violent freak!"

"As it should!" Tori glared at her, "Why didn't you tell me that he was listening?!"

In response, Tracey did the mature thing and stuck her tongue out before she got up from her seat so that she could dodge another attack at her physical self.

Daphne chuckled when she saw the altercation between her best friend and her sister. Her eyes fell on Harry who stood there with an awkward expression of wanting and not wanting to be there at the same time. She knew that the boy was here to talk with her, something she wanted to do herself, but their company wouldn't allow that to happen.

"Alright you two. That's enough." Daphne stopped the ongoing banter between the two girls. "Now, I think Harry and I would like to talk about a few things — and no, Astoria, you aren't going to listen. It's private."

Astoria gave her trademark pout that she had been taught by Daphne to use on their father when they wanted something. Secretly, she knew that her pout and puppy-dog eyes combo was better than Daphne's because she was cuter than her elder sister but she never said it out loud. That weapon is always saved for the worst.

"You do know that I was the one who taught you the trick, don't you?" Daphne chuckled. "It doesn't work on me. Now get out."

"But Daph…"

"Tracey, can you please help this brat out?" Daphne asked her friend, interrupting Astoria's tantrum. The auburn-haired girl didn't need to be asked twice as she pulled the younger Greengrass sister away from the bed.

Before leaving Astoria went to stand in front of Harry and glared at him. "I don't care whether you are the Dragon Slayer or you fought and defeated You-Know-Who. If I find that you are hurting my sister, then I will find you and I will make you pay for it. Believe it!"

Harry couldn't help but smile at the little girl threatening him like that, still he raised his hands in surrender and said, "Alright, little Greengrass—"

"Don't call me that!"

" —I won't hurt your sister. I promise."

"Good! And you better remember that." Astoria narrowed her eyes on him. "Out of everyone, only I have the right to hurt her. Understood?"

The duo ignored Daphne's indignant 'HEY!' and Tracey had to do her best to not laugh out loud as she pulled Astoria away so that Harry and Daphne could finally get the privacy that they wanted.

"Won't you sit?" Daphne asked him softly when she saw that he didn't move and kept standing, even after the girls had left.

Harry took the offered seat and — out of habit — created a privacy bubble around Daphne's bed. He didn't want his personal life to become a talk of the school, one change after another as well as the whole fiasco with Voldemort was enough as it is.

"So…"

"So…"

Daphne internally smiled when she saw how awkward the usually straightforward Ravenclaw was being. She was pleased with this because this meant that her worries regarding Harry's behavior change during the time he was away was proven wrong.

He was still the same boy that she had last met in the broom closet, if a bit more receptive to her advances. Something that she wasn't going to complain about.

"How are you?" Harry broke the silence that had ensued.

"Been better." She shrugged. "My right side hurts a bit, Pomfrey says it'd take me three more days to heal completely."

"I see. Well, I can speed up the process if you want?" He asked her. "I mean, my magic. I have too much of it, so I can give a small amount to you and it will speed up your healing process."

Daphne smiled but she shook her head, "I'm good, but enough about me. How are you? Did the guild work you were going for, finish? Or will you be going again?"

Harry thought back to their last conversation when he had been pulled in the broom closet, he remembered telling her that he wouldn't be there during the Yule Ball because he was going for some guild work.

That guild work was training in the Realm of Death for seven years. Quite a long time for him, but merely a month-and-a-half for her.

"Yeah, it's over now," Harry told her and saw her smile. "Although, I have been called by the guild again, but this time it'd probably be done in a day or two. So, nothing big."

"And then?" She asked him, "What about after that? Will you stay here or will you go back again?"

The Innovator thought about the innocent question for some time before he sighed. "I don't know. If they need me again, I will be asked to join the forces. But, if they don't, then I won't go on my own."

"You are lying." Daphne smirked.

"And you can tell?"

"If there is anyone who can it's me." Daphne smiled impishly before her eyes narrowed a bit, "And I hope to keep it that way, Mr. Ladies Charmer."

"Uhh… Ladies charmer? Really? That's corny, cringeworthy and a straight lie."

"Well, not the way I see it, but I don't want to give you a big head, so I won't say anything else." She smirked. "So, tell me about this work of yours, what did you do while you were away?"

'I learned under an alien commander in an entirely different world who taught me how to kill, how to torture, the thin line between just death and sadism, information extortion and many more.' Harry thought but he just shrugged. "They taught me how to fight, and a few more useful things."

"Like flying?"

"...yes, like flying." Harry agreed.

"That was so cool! Can you teach that to me? Please? I promise I won't tell anyone." Daphne made her puppy dog eyes but Harry shook his head in denial.

"I am under a vow to never teach anyone anything that I learned there." Harry gave a smug smirk. "So if you want to fly, get your broom and go out on the Quidditch pitch."

Daphne made a face at that. It was a well known fact to Harry that she didn't like brooms at all, and it wasn't because she was bad at flying. No! She loved flying! But brooms? Those infernals twigs were a cause for her childhood trauma. Something that forced her to never ride a broom ever again.

It was funny how her younger sister Astoria took lessons from Daphne's mistake in an absolutely opposite manner and instead of quitting flying on the broom, she became a better rider. So much so that she was a chaser on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, while her sister didn't even go to quidditch matches anymore.

"You know that hug you gave me… everyone's talking about it," Harry told her. "Even Alan — the guy who wasn't here for a month — knows about it."

"Yeah, Tori and Tracey told me about it. Even my common room was divided on that topic." Daphne shrugged. "But I don't care, I had just seen you after so long, I couldn't care less about what people saw in me or what they wanted. I know my dad loves you like a son, mom is a fan of your work, and Tori is a brat, but even she knows that I like you, I don't care about others' opinion."

"What about me?" Harry asked her with a faux sneer. "You never asked for my opinion."

"Have I ever asked you about anything that made sense?" Daphne bit back, "We have been in this together since that night you gave me free ice cream. Now, suffer!"

Harry couldn't help but smile at the memory that she had unlocked.

It was from their first year, he had just taken his first steps into innovation because the 'En-Lightning' fashion series from Madam Malkin's had become popular overnight. Unfortunately, he didn't have anyone who he could've shared his first moment of happiness with.

Therefore, he had decided to celebrate it alone in the Hogwarts kitchen at night. He had just asked the house-elves for a bowl of his favorite ice cream —the Bluebells — which he had created in Florean Fortesque's shop when he saw Daphne enter the kitchen too.

The girl had been crying because she was homesick, she was worried that her daddy won't be able to do his work alone, or her mom won't be able to tend to her garden without her help. Most of all, she missed her little sister Astoria whom she hadn't seen or heard from for the last four months.

That was the first time when they had talked at Hogwarts, and Harry had shared his ice cream with her. He felt elated when he learned that it was her favorite flavor ever since she tasted it at Florean's shop when they had first met.

That night, they hadn't talked a lot, but, for some reason, the silence had been as comforting as their company.

"I still like bluebells, you know." Daphne broke through his reverie.

"Hmm?"

"You were thinking about it too, weren't you?" Daphne smiled. "It was the first time I learned something about you, you were more open back then. And more easy to talk to. I didn't need to use surprise attacks to corner you." She giggled.

"And stupider too," Harry piped in.

"Oh I don't know about that… whether or not you are still stupid is up for debate."

"Hey! Need I remind you who is the Innovator here?" He smirked. "I think I should try asking Astoria out, we seem to have a common ground for solving arithmancy equations."

"Oh you have a lot more in common than just being nerds," Daphne nodded. "Both of you are equally insufferable, knuckleheaded, straight forward, no filter… and always on my mind."

"That last one sounded more like a forcefully added corny line." Harry smirked at her. "You can do better than that, Daphne."

"Of course, you'd think about it like that." She sighed. "What more could I expect from a guy who took four years to finally start talking? Should I expect your confession of love by our thirties? And maybe a kid by the time we are fifty?"

"Wait! You are going too fast." Harry's eyes widened. "And what confession of love?!"

"SEE! THIRTIES!" Daphne cried before both of them started chuckling.

After a few minutes, it was Harry who broke the comfortable silence that had fallen, "Thanks, Daphne."

"Hmm?" Daphne raised her eyebrow, "Thanks? For what?"

"For being there for me whenever I needed someone the most. Every year, at the year's end, you have been there for me. And, even then, I always pushed you away." Harry sighed, "I am sorry for being a grade A asshole."

"Harry...? Did something happen while you were gone?" She asked him as she clasped his hand. "You know you can tell me about it, right?"

He nodded. He knew that he could, in fact if he had to narrow down the people with whom he could share almost everything, Daphne would probably be the first one. Even Sirius and Blaise didn't know as much about him as she did. She had been there for him every time he needed some company, and during those times they had talked a lot.

"I can't tell you everything, wait — listen first!" He stopped her. "I can't tell you everything right now, I will tell you later, I promise. But, for now, just know that you have saved my life. There was a time when I was about to die, and at that moment, I felt all alone. I was worried I wouldn't be able to finish the task and that everyone would die. But then, as always, you found me."

He smiled, "Your memories found me, and we had a talk. Your words once again gave me enough strength to fight back and win. So, it's all because of you that I am standing here today."

'Or I wouldn't have survived The Tandavam at all…' He thought before he shook his head. "Therefore, thanks for being there for me. And sorry for being an asshole to you. My master showed me how much of an idiot I had been."

"You weren't that bad." Daphne squeezed his hand comfortingly. "I knew that you were doing all that just to get away from me, and, for some reason, it motivated me more because I had already seen the happy guy you could be. So it always confused me why you decided to push everyone away instead."

"Still, if it helps you, I do accept your apology." She smiled when he sighed in relief, but then a thought crossed her mind which made her grin impishly. Something that Harry had noted.

"What?"

"Who said you could get off scot-free?" She grinned. "Even if it was for some grand reason, you were, as you said, an asshole."

"But you just accepted my apology!" He cried.

"Uh yeah… whatever, now I want you to do something if you want me to truly accept it." She smirked at him. "Or your apology will forever be a receiver of half-hearted acceptance."

Harry shook his head at the stupidity but he decided that it was better to continue it. "Alright. What do you want me to do?"

"I want a dance," she announced.

"..."

"..."

"...What?" Harry blinked. "You could've asked for anything! Literally anything that you liked, and you want a dance?"

"And I'd like a dance." Daphne grinned. "And not just any dance, a proper night of dancing."

"That doesn't make any difference." He shook his head at the absurd situation. "When you could've asked for anything, why would you even want a dance in the first place?"

"That's because you made me miss the one I had." She poked his arm. "The Yule Ball, it was such a good time, but I didn't have a partner, and I missed the dance. So, since you're offering, I want a night to dance with you."

Harry thought about it for some time before he sighed and smiled, there was no way he could ever understand how a girl's mind worked. Well, he did give her the free choice so it was time to fulfill her wish.

"Alright, Daphne." He agreed. "I don't know of a place where we could host a ball right now, but I'm sure Sirius would. I will ask him to make a reservation for us so that—"

"No-no-no," she denied. "No need for that. I will arrange all of it, you just need to bring yourself, and a little bit of faith in my abilities. Oh and dress up well, not like our first outing where I had to select clothes for you." She chuckled.

They talked some more before Harry noted that it was time for dinner, and therefore after bidding her goodbye he canceled the privacy bubble before he left the Hospital wing.
