Hiro Hamada woke up in his room with a yawn. He got off his bed and was about to head for the restroom, when a beeping sound came from a red box, summoning Baymax.
"Hello, I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion," The robot said. "Good morning, Hiro."
"Hey, Baymax," Hiro greeted, tiredly. "I'm gonna brush my teeth, wait here." He went straight to the bathroom before Baymax could give a lecture about personal hygiene like he does almost every time it's brought up.
Several minutes later, the 14 year-old boy genius came out wearing his favorite outfit and feeling refreshed after brushing his teeth and cleaning his face. Although his hair was as messy as ever, he didn't mind since it's always like this no matter how many times he's brushed it.
"C'mon, Baymax. Let's get some breakfast." They walked downstairs to the cafe where Cass was already serving customers their breakfast.
"Morning, Aunt Cass," Hiro greeted as he sat down at a nearby table, Baymax standing next to him.
"Good morning, Aunt Cass."
"Morning, Hiro, Baymax," Cass greeted back with a smile. "I'll get your breakfast right after–"
"Do not worry, m'am!" Suddenly, Noodle Burger Boy came to serve the customer Cass was tending to, the woman looking wide-eyed. "I've got it under control."
"Oh, thank you, Noodle," The cafe owner said, gratefully. Hiro gave a nervous smile. It has been a few days since he and the team defeated N.B.B. and his "sisters". After that, he reprograms them back to their normal selves before they went rogue. Despite everything, he still feels uncomfortable with the fact that he now kinda lives with one of his old enemies.
"Hiro, my sensors reveal that you are nervous," Baymax spoke up, slightly startling the boy. "Is it about Noodle Burger Boy?"
"What? No…okay, maybe…" Hiro stated, rubbing his arm. "It's that…it still feels pretty weird seeing him and the other mascots now."
Cass and Baymax glance at each other. They knew they couldn't blame him, since Noodle Burger Boy had been terrorizing San Fransokyo for almost a year. Not to mention, he somehow hacked into Hyper-potomous, Hangry Panda, and Crushroom a couple months ago. The woman gave an understanding look, putting her hands on her nephew's shoulders as she faced him.
"Hey, I know that this is a big adjustment, but we'll work around it. Trust me, before you know it, you'll actually enjoy having them around." She gave her nephew a reassuring smile and hugged him, which he returned.
"Thanks, Aunt Cass," He said, gratefully. Suddenly, Baymax's beeper goes off again.
"Hiro, this is a reminder that your birthday is in 2 days," He states, Hiro's eyes widening in realization. That's right…in 2 days, he's going to turn 15. This will be his first birthday with all his friends and…
The first birthday without his older brother.
Hiro rubbed his neck with a saddened look. "Wow…I didn't realize…I guess I"ve been so busy lately that I kinda forgot."
Cass immediately recognized the look on his face and frowned. For as long as they can remember, they would only celebrate their birthdays together. But now that Tadashi is gone, it just wasn't the same…
"Hey, let's still try to make this a great birthday. I've invited the whole gang and we're gonna have a blast," She said. Hiro gave a weak smile. He knew that his aunt was trying to cheer him up the best way she could, but he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to enjoy the party.
Suddenly, the cafe door opened and Hiro turned to see his friends coming in. Since graduating SFIT, the team has been working on new ways to maintain their lives as superheroes and normal citizens, especially since Gogo, Wasabi, and Honey Lemon are still job-hunting.
"Hi Hiro, Baymax, Aunt Cass," Fred greeted, enthusiastically. He was holding a new comic book in his hand.
"Hey, guys," Hiro greeted back as Cass and Baymax waved.
"Hi."
"Hello."
"I'll get you guys breakfast in a few minutes." Cass walked off to the kitchen as the gang of superheroes sat at a table.
"So, Hiro. Are you excited for your birthday?" Honey Lemon asked, excitedly.
"That's right, you're going to be 15 in a few days. Must be pretty cool," Wasabi added with a smile.
"Yeah, pretty cool," Gogo chimed in.
"Thanks guys," Hiro replied. Then he looked down sadly, which his friends noticed of course.
"Hiro, is something wrong?" Honey Lemon asked as they all looked worried.
"Yeah, I'm fine…it's just—"
"Hiro is sad because he will be celebrating his first birthday without Tadashi," Baymax informed.
The gang gasped in realization. They then have ashamed looks on their faces. How could they have forgotten about this?
"Oh, we're so sorry, Hiro," Honey Lemon said as Wasabi placed a sympathetic hand on the boy's shoulder.
"While Tadashi may not be here, but we'll always be there for you no matter what," Wasabi reassured the teen genius.
"Yeah," Everyone else agreed as Cass brought them their food.
After a nice breakfast, the 6 superheroes went to Hiro's room to relax. The boy was sitting on his chair near his desk.
"I'm still not used to Noodle Burger Boy and the other mascots working at the Lucky Cat," Wasabi admitted as his friends nodded in agreement.
"Well, it's a big change for all of us, but we're gonna get through it…like we always do."
Everyone smiled at his reassurance. In a way, they could sense their old friend, Tadashi, saying the exact same thing. Guaranteed that the two are brothers.
"Well, you're right, Hiro," Honey Lemon said with a smile. "We've all been through a lot this past year and we always found a way to get through with it together. Besides, maybe in a few months, Noodle Burger Boy and the other mascots working in the Lucky Cat will become a normal thing for us."
Wasabi, Gogo, and Fred nodded their heads in agreement. Despite all the hardships they've encountered, including…Tadashi's death, they have managed to work together to overcome them. Even when things will not always work out the way they plan.
A beeping sound occurred, making them turn to Baymax as the robot's screen appeared on his chest. "Hiro, this is a reminder that you are dog-sitting Curie, Fermi, and Oppenheimer for Professor Granville today."
Hiro's eyes widened at the reminder as he stood up. "Oh, right. I gotta go now, guys. Granville should be here in a few minutes."
The gang looked at him with shock, as the last time Granville asked him to pet-sit…things obviously didn't end well. He raised a brow, noticing the looks they're giving him. "What…?"
Everyone flinched as they glanced away, sheepishly. Awkward silence filled Hiro's bedroom until Wasabi finally spoke up. "Sorry, it's just that…we're really surprised that Granville is letting you dog-sit again after…you know…"
Hiro winced at the reminder but shrugged it off. "Heh…believe it or not, I felt bad after what happened last time and wanted to prove to her that I can be trusted with her dogs again. Plus, she had a last-minute meeting and I was the only one available."
"That's a good point, for both of those reasons," Gogo said as she and the other human heroes gave him a small grin. Suddenly, a knock is heard and they turn to see Aunt Cass peeking at the doorway.
"Hey, kids. Sorry to interrupt. Hiro, Professor Granville and her dogs are here now."
"Thanks, Aunt Cass." The boy genius grabbed his stuff and was about to head out when he turned to Baymax.
"Hey, Baymax. Are you sure you don't wanna come with me? I might need some help with the dogs."
"No thank you," The healthcare bot said. "I am assisting Fred on comic book knowledge today."
"Yep, I'm teaching him about conspiracy theories and plot-twists!" Fred exclaimed, happily.
Hiro chuckled in amusement and sighed. "Well, guys. I'm off. I'll see you later."
The rest of the heroes said their farewells as he walked downstairs. Wasabi walked over to the door to make sure he was really out of earshot. He turned to his friends with a nod.
"He's gone now, guys," He said. "Now, let's get down to business."
"Yeah! Operation Birthday Bash is a go!" Fred pumped his fists in excitement while Gogo and Honey Lemon smiled.
At Frederickson Mansion, the gang were in Fred's room, discussing what to do for Hiro's birthday, with Mini-Max and Heathcliff in tow. In front of them was Fred's "Birthday Wall", the same one he used for Wasabi's birthday.
"Okay, guys. Hiro's turning 15 soon and we're gonna throw him the best birthday ever!" The comic book fan exclaimed, determinedly.
"And according to our amazing planning board," He gestured to said board in front of him. "We've got everything we need! Aunt Cass is on cooking duty–"
"Honey, the mascots, and I will decorate the cafe," Gogo adds.
"And me, Baymax, and Fred will distract Hiro until we get to the party," Wasabi finishes.
"Did you order the decorations from Party Empire, Heathcliff?" Fred asks his butler. Heathcliff nodded in response.
"Yes, Master Fredrick."
"And do not forget about Mini-Max, defender of justice!" Mini-Max exclaimed. "I will make sure that no danger will happen on my creator's special day!"
"Aww. that's sweet, buddy," Fred cooed, patting the little robot on the head. "But that won't be necessary. Honestly, there hasn't been anything major ever since we stopped Trina from destroying the city with Krei's trucks and Buddy Guardians. Other than that, that's really it. I mean Noodle Burger Boy and the mascots don't count because–"
"Fred, we get it," Gogo interrupted, making him stop in his tracks.
Honey Lemon and Wasabi glanced at each other, both of them thinking the same thing. Their allies stared at the two as they've been quiet since Mini-Max's declaration.
"Mr. Wasabi, Miss Lemon. Are you both feeling alright?" Heathcliff asked.
"Honey Lemon and Wasabi, your stress levels have increased after Fred mentioned Trina's name and the Buddy Guardians," Baymax said, snapping them out of it.
"Oh, sorry, everyone," Honey apologized, sheepishly. "It's just–"
"As much as we don't want to admit this, but…Fred actually has a point," Wasabi added. "Think about it; after that whole robot revolution thing, nothing serious has threatened San Fransokyo. Sure, there's the other villains, but they haven't been much of a challenge lately."
"Yeah, not to mention that some of them are either reformed or still in custody," Fred says. "Much like a lot of comic series, once a major villain is defeated, they get mentioned a few times before never showing up again."
Gogo sighed and spoke up. "Guys, don't worry about it. If there's any bad guys trying to wreak havoc, we'll be there to stop them like we always do."
"You're right. Thanks a lot, Gogo," Wasabi said as everyone else smiled.
"Now, don't we have a party to plan?" Mini-Max asks, jumping on top of the board.
"Oh, right! Let's go, you guys!" Honey Lemon exclaimed, excitedly.
The next couple of days were a bit of a blur. The heroes got busy planning the surprise party while keeping Hiro busy and away from the cafe as much as possible. It wasn't an easy job, especially since the teen kept asking if they needed help.
On the day before Hiro's birthday, Wasabi had taken him, Fred, and Baymax to his favorite clothing store to look at some suits after breakfast, while the girls, mascots, and Cass put the finishing touches at the cafe.
"Here, Hiro. Try this on for size," The African-American man held out a dark blue suit with a matching jacket and pants, white polo shirt, and black tie with a smile. Hiro slightly stepped back with a sheepish grin.
"Thanks, but no thanks," He said, politely. "Wasabi, we've been here for three hours trying on different suits and it's wearing me out. Even Fred and Baymax are tired."
"They can't be that–"
Before Wasabi could even finish his sentence, they heard a loud snore and turned to see that Fred is fast asleep from boredom while laying on the healthcare bot's belly.
"I am a robot. I do not have any emotions, such as "feeling tired"," Baymax stated.
"Ok, two things," Wasabi pointed out. "One: tiredness is an emotion. And two: you'll never know when you'll have the perfect suit for a certain occasion. For instance, what if–"
"All right, Wasabi," Hiro interrupted, not wanting his Neat Freak of a friend to list every occasion that requires wearing suits. "Anyway, let's head back to the cafe. I'm pretty sure Aunt Cass wants to spend as much time with me on my birthday."
"Uhh, yeah…" Wasabi sweated a little. "Wait right here. I gotta…um…take this call first."
He dashed into an empty hall, Hiro giving a confused look at what happened. He could tell that his friends have been acting weird lately. And he shouldn't be surprised, since they did follow him around for protection after many encounters with villains whenever they're not being superheroes.
Once the teen was not within earshot, Wasabi pulled out his phone out of his pocket and called Gogo, waiting anxiously as it rang. After a few seconds, it was finally picked up.
"Hey, Wasabi."
"Please tell me you guys are almost finished," The man said, frantically. "Hiro wants to go back right away and I don't think me and the guys can stall any further."
He peeked behind the wall to see Hiro waking up Fred from his nap, the millionaire yawning as he fell onto the ground while stretching his arms. Wasabi cringed at this as he turned back around to speak to Gogo.
"Anyway, we are literally out of options. Hiro's gonna find out why we've been keeping him away from the cafe and it'll ruin the surprise party before his birthday even starts."
"Okay. Chill, you big baby," Gogo replied in annoyance. "We just need to hide the decorations so that we can put them up tomorrow. You guys can come back now if you want."
Wasabi let out a sigh of relief. He was about to say something until a huge crash was heard outside the store, causing the building to shake. People gasp and yelp in panic as some small debris falls from the ceiling.
"What's that sound? Wasabi, what's going on over there?"
"Um, I'll tell you later once me and the guys find out, Bye!" Wasabi hung up as he ran to meet up with his friends, who were helping everyone evacuate the building.
"Hey, guys. Do you know what just happened?" He asked once he stopped in front of them.
"No idea. Guess we better go outside to see what's going on," Hiro said as they rushed out of the store. Once they were outside, an army of flying drones were firing lasers at many of the stores as they were catching on fire along the way. They were mostly black with dark red trimmings and the lasers are adjusted on both the top and sides. Their scanners appear to be on the front, similar to Krei Tech's Buddy Guards. They also seem to be hovering on the bottom in order to fly.
People are running around screaming in fright from the chaos. The group of four are looking around in horror at how the district was being destroyed before their very eyes. Hiro then turned to Fred with a panicked expression on his face.
"Uhh, Fred–"
"Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing," The billionaire said as he immediately pulled out his phone to call their friends.
As Aunt Cass was putting the finishing touches on Hiro's birthday cake, everything at the Lucky Cat Cafe was surprisingly not as hectic as she thought. With the robot mascots tending to the customers, along with Gogo and Honey Lemon helping with the preparations for the party, she managed to get more work done as usual.
"Aunt Cass, we hid the decorations like you told us. What else do you want us to do?" Honey Lemon asked as she and Gogo walked inside the kitchen.
"Oh, that's alright, girls. All we had to do was decorate the cafe tomorrow. Not to mention that I'm almost done with the cake."
"Huh, kinda interesting on how you want to finish it the day before," Gogo said, raising a brow.
"Oh, I just want to make sure that everything is done before tomorrow since I'll probably be too busy to get it done on time," Cass replied with a small smile.
Suddenly, Gogo's phone ranged and she grabbed it to see that Fred was calling her. As the adrenaline junkie walked outside to talk, Honey Lemon stared at Cass for a bit.
"Still, are you okay? You and Hiro have been acting a bit off ever since you guys mentioned his birthday," The tall girl said in concern. Cass sighed a little before turning to face Honey.
"I'm sorry if we made you all worry. It's just that…I want Hiro to have a nice birthday this year since Tadashi is no longer with us."
Honey Lemon's eyes softened at her. Tadashi wasn't just a good friend but a good brother and nephew as well. He was always there for them whenever they're upset or are struggling with their own troubles. She couldn't imagine what Aunt Cass and Hiro must be going through right now.
The bespectacled woman was about to say something to cheer her up when Gogo burst through the kitchen door and grabbed her friend's hand.
"Sorry, Aunt Cass, but I need to talk to Honey for a sec."
"Wait, girls, I–"
The two women were already out before Cass could even finish. The next thing they know, they were inside a closet so that no one could hear their conversation.
"Gogo, what's going on? Is everything alright?" Honey asked, worried.
"Fred called. We need to gear up and meet the guys at San Fransokyo's shopping district."
"Okay, but what about Cass?"
"Leave that to me," Gogo opened the closet door and whistled with her fingers. Noodle Burger Boy came up to them.
"What can I do for you, Miss?" The robot asked.
"We need you and the other mascots to stall for us and keep Cass busy while Honey Lemon and I go and help our friends. And in case she asks where we are, tell her that Professor Granville wanted to talk to us about our careers."
"You got it. One order of "stalling for friends" coming right up!" NBB ran off to tell his fellow mascots about the plan while the two women ran outside of the cafe.
"I hope we'll get there on time," Honey Lemon said. "I don't like to think about how many people are in danger just because we're late…and how much property damage these villains created."
"Don't worry. We'll be there in no time," Gogo reassured, tapping on the Skymax app.
Back at the district, the guys and Baymax were trying their best to get people to safety as the drones were still destroying the shops.
"Where are Gogo and Honey Lemon?!" Wasabi asked, frantically as they know that they can't keep this up forever without their superhero suits. "They should've been here a few minutes ago!"
Suddenly, the six Skymaxes flew in and landed in front of them, with the two women to tow.
"Hey, guys. Sorry, we're late, but we had to ask the mascots to stall for us in case Cass starts asking why we left so soon," Honey Lemon said, catching a breath.
"Thanks. C'mon, you guys, let's stop these drones before they cause any more damage," Hiro said as his friends nodded in agreement.
The heroes retreat into an empty alley and change into their gear. They then quickly bolted back to the district to fight off the drones.
"Alright, guys. Let's just destroy these drones before they cause any more damage," Hiro instructed as the rest of the team nodded their heads in agreement.
"I'll handle this, you guys. Fredzilla to the rescue!" Fred shouted, heroically. "Taste the flames of your defeat, drones!"
He blasted large flames out of his costume's mouth at the flying bots…only to see that they were completely fine.
"What?! But–how–...!?" Fred was at a loss for words as everyone else was just as shocked.
Gogo lets out a shout as she flung a hover disk at the drones, with Wasabi following after her, trying to slice through the robots. However, it was the same result as Fred's attacks as they remained unharmed.
"Ugh, are you kidding me right now?!" Gogo shouts in frustration.
"Hey, uh, Hiro? I don't think any of our equipment is destroying these drones!" Wasabi cries out in panic.
"Hang on, guys. Baymax, scan those drones," Hiro tells the healthcare bot.
"Scanning. The drones appear to be made of–"
Before Baymax could even finish his sentence, the drones suddenly made a loud beeping noise that made Big Hero 6 cover their ears. After what seemed to be a couple of minutes, they stopped and flew away, confusing the heroes.
They glanced at each other as they were thinking about the same thing.
What the heck just happened…?
