On a round black table surrounded by yellow chairs, Veruca sets down a lunch tray next to Hanna, who's brought her lunch from home as always. Today has the blonde girl dressed in shades of green, and Veruca's tie being glossy sky blue.
The cool air of the school cafeteria smelled of chicken gravy and hand sanitizer. An invisible cloud of cotton candy scented the area around Veruca.
Opening up her pink, red, and white lunch bag, Hanna scoots her yellow chair closer to her best friend as more kids come to sit at their table. "You'll never guess who I saw at Tesco the other day. I was out with Rachel, and Dawn came up behind me."
Veruca's hands dropped down to the table. Hardly believing what she heard.
"She walked right up and said hello to me. Then she started telling me about a boy she likes at her school named Peter, and how he stole a bottle of fizzy pop for her the other day."
Veruca's eyes wondered away from her friend, and settled on a curly-haired girl sauntering in her direction. Any kind of thoughts or responses that Veruca might've had, fizzled away inside her mind. It wasn't a surprise that Dawn was so friendly with Hanna now, but what was a surprise, was that Lilly Scruncher was sitting down at their table.
Shiloh hissed and flinched away from her the instant she grabbed the yellow chair with her meaty hands. Lilly was a heavy-set girl that smelled like she's never touched a drop of soap since the day she was born. Many kids have discussed with each other what exactly they think causes the smell. Some say it's from not washing or wiping. Others say it's from lots of eating and sweating. One boy, who seemed more sure of it than anyone else in the entire school, claims to know exactly what the cause of the smell most likely is. He says that his older sister once had a huge itchy rash that got a real nasty infection, and the smell was nearly identical to Lilly's. It oozed, and bled, and crusted over until it eventually healed.
Lilly always brought her lunch from home, because the school didn't give a large enough amount of food for her liking. Unpacking the backpack she used as a lunchbag, she began pouring out her food onto the table. Inconsiderate of all the space she was taking up. She unpacked two different cans of soda, three different packets of crisps, a sandwich with thick layers of meat and cheese, and four different bars of Slugworth chocolate.
If not for all the noise in the cafeteria, everyone would hear how loudly she chewed and swallowed. Hearing her unbrushed teeth grinding everything into mush, and sliming down her throat to her enormous stomach. She stared at Veruca with her dull eyes as she ate. Her jaws working up and down, up and down, without breaking the uncomfortable eye contact.
She used her oversized blouse as a napkin. Wiping food from her face and mucus from her nose. Exposing a big belly that hung over baggy jeans as she did so.
Everyone tried their best to ignore her. Holding desperately onto their appetites while they talked with each other. Sipping on water to settle the mild churning in her stomach, Hanna directs her attention back to Veruca. "Anyway, she said that he isn't her boyfriend yet, but he will be soon. Trust me, i'll never have a boyfriend because i'm too afraid of getting cheated on like Rachel."
"Boyfriend... Huh... My boyfriend likes shortcake."
"Your 'boyfriend' likes boys, Shiloh." Hanna teased. Drawing out a giggle from the white-haired girl.
"Do you like seafood?"
The girls all turn their heads to Lilly. Shrinking back at the sight of her talking with her mouth full.
"No. I'm allergic. It could kill me." Hanna answers.
Lilly opens her mouth. Showing them the slimy mush that she was about to swallow down. "See? See-food! Get it? It's because you can see the food, but you think I meant food like fish that's from the ocean." Lilly laughs like she thinks she did something funny.
"That's not funny, Scruncher. You're disgusting." Called a boy from a nearby table.
Lilly rolled her eyes and stuck her fat tongue out at him like a toddler.
It was amazing how fast she was eating everything she brought. When she got down to the chocolate, Veruca laid her eyes on the wrappers. They weren't as colourful as Wonka bars. They didn't taste as good either. She had tried one once a few years ago. It was good, but not good enough.
Veruca pauses her eating of applesauce. Four pieces of a more familiar chocolate were being handed to her. The Wonka bar in Hanna's hand had strawberry cream inside. Veruca didn't have to bite into it to know that.
"Do you know when you're coming over to my house yet?" The blonde asks as the candy is taken from her. "Me and Rachel can teach you how to play tennis and we won't charge you anything. Or we can just play ping pong in the basement if you want."
Nibbling on the chocolate, Veruca's eyes shift to the side. "My uncle still doesn't like me to leave the house by myself except to come to school."
"That's okay. We can come pick you up and then you won't be alone. We just need to know where you live."
Dramatic groaning sounded from the other side of the table. Lilly's chubby face twisting in discomfort.
"There's a..." Hanna's voice dissolved into uncertainty. What looked to be fear pulled at her features when she looked at Lilly.
The chunky girl was slightly drooling on herself and leaning over in her seat. Only those at the same table were noticing the unfolding events.
Lilly whined like an irritated baby and started leaning more to the side.
Scooting back from the table, Hanna's teal eyes grew wider. Fingers fiddling with the green necklace from her crystal collection.
Deeper inside herself, Veruca felt relief that Hanna wasn't asking about visiting her anymore. She still didn't know her well enough to know if it'd be safe to let her know about the factory. Or if Mr. Wonka would ever even let her come inside of it.
Rolling her head over her shoulder, Lilly completely bent over to the side. Loudly making an unholy gurgling noise as she spilled the thick, sloppy contents of her stomach onto the green plaid skirt of Miranda Piker.
Hanna shrieked and jumped back. Running backwards to get far away from the table. "OH MY GOD!" She cried. Hanna's screaming had silenced the entire cafeteria. Shockingly, Lilly's thunderous imitation of a dying whale call had only muted the surrounding areas.
Miranda stood gagging between her sobs. Tears streaming down her face, with Lilly's mucus, stomach acid, and saliva streaming down her clothes. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!? YOU FAT PIG!" Miranda sobbed. "PLEASE! MATILDA, HELP ME!"
Keeping her distance, Hanna frantically pointed to her lunchbag. Pleading for someone to bring it to her. Safe from being too close to the biohazardous substance, Veruca spotted an unopened Slugworth bar on the other side of the table.
The girl in the black and white uniform was almost climbing onto the table to reach it. Inspecting it up close, she found it was peanut butter flavoured. Like Wonka's Skrunchy Crunchy Peanut Butter bar. But without the bright yellow wrapper, fun name, and delicious taste.
Wailing faded from the cafeteria as Miranda was taken away by a teacher. The table they all sat at was put off limits until tomorrow. Requiring everyone to move to another table or booth for now. Not like it mattered. Nobody wanted to eat anymore after that.
Calming down after the vomit was out of sight, Hanna sighed in relief. "You know I had really bad food poisoning once? It was horrible."
Clutching the Slugworth bar in her hand, Veruca carried it with her until it came time to go home.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Fun Fact: In the 1970s, there was a real life peanut butter Wonka bar called a Super Skrunch. You can find commercials for it on YouTube.
