Chapter 20: The Road to Turffield
A Journey of Focus and Growth
The journey to Turffield was both a test and a revelation for Tom. With his friends ahead of him, he had no distractions, no easy conversations to break the long stretches of road. It was just him, his Pokémon, and the Galar countryside. The solitude gave him time to reflect on his strategy and allowed him to push his team to new heights.
Each morning, he rose early, cooked breakfast for his team, and spent hours training. His psychic abilities came in handy for efficiently organizing these sessions. With telekinetic precision, he could move boulders for Lycanroc to smash or simulate aerial dodges for Rookidee. He tailored every exercise to each Pokémon's strengths and weaknesses.
For Toxel, Tom focused on its surprising ability to use Fire Punch. Through repetition, the baby Pokémon learned to generate the fire consistently, and Tom used it as a way to strengthen its small arms. Toxel practiced punching trees, creating a cacophony of cracks and pops as its flames ignited the bark. "Good job, buddy," Tom said each time, handing it a small berry as a reward. Despite its mischievous nature, Toxel seemed to thrive on the encouragement, its confidence growing day by day.
Rookidee soared higher and farther with every session. Tom worked with it on its agility, having it perform intricate maneuvers mid-flight to simulate dodging attacks. Using his psychic powers, he would throw small pebbles into the air, forcing Rookidee to react and pluck them out before they hit the ground. It was grueling work, but Rookidee's speed and precision improved rapidly.
For Wimpod, training was more about overcoming its innate fear. Tom set up mock battle scenarios where Wimpod had to stand its ground against Lycanroc or Zigzagoon. Gradually, Wimpod began to resist its instinct to flee, holding firm in the face of pressure. When it successfully landed a powerful Struggle Bug against Lycanroc one day, Tom cheered so loudly that Wimpod skittered back in surprise before clicking its pincers proudly.
Building a Stronger Bond
Traveling alone gave Tom the opportunity to deepen his bond with his team. During breaks, he would sit with them and play his guitar, humming tunes while they rested. One evening, he even wrote a short song for each Pokémon, tailoring melodies to match their personalities. Lycanroc's song was a fast-paced rhythm filled with sharp chords, while Toxel's was an erratic, playful tune with sudden shifts in tempo.
At night, the group camped under the stars. Tom would lay out his sleeping bag and let his Pokémon choose their spots around him. Toxel, as always, claimed a spot near his head, while Lycanroc stood vigil at the camp's edge, its glowing red eyes scanning the darkness. Zigzagoon curled up in a ball near the fire, and Rookidee perched on a low-hanging branch, occasionally fluffing its feathers in contentment.
Despite the challenging training sessions, these quiet moments reminded Tom why he loved being a Pokémon Trainer. His team wasn't just a collection of powerful creatures; they were his partners, his friends, and his family in this strange new world.
Arrival in Turffield
By the time Tom reached the outskirts of Turffield, his Pokémon were visibly stronger and more confident. Lycanroc's coat gleamed in the sunlight, and its movements were sharper than ever. Toxel had grown bolder, often punching the air in practice even when not in battle. Wimpod skittered alongside Tom without hesitation, its fear slowly transforming into determination.
Turffield was a picturesque town, its rolling green hills dotted with wind turbines and Wooloo grazing lazily. At the center of it all stood the Gym, a massive structure resembling a giant greenhouse. The sight of it filled Tom with anticipation.
"Let's not waste any time," he said to his team. They nodded in unison, ready for the challenge ahead.
The Gym Battle
Turffield's Gym Leader, Milo, was known for his Grass-type Pokémon. Tom knew that the key to victory would be exploiting their weaknesses while keeping his Pokémon focused.
The Gym puzzle involved herding Wooloo into pens, but Tom's psychic abilities made the task almost laughably easy. With a small nudge from his mind, the Wooloo rolled obediently into place, leaving the Gym trainers visibly impressed.
When Tom finally faced Milo, the Gym Leader greeted him with a broad smile.
"Your team must be something special if you got here so fast," Milo said.
"They're ready," Tom replied confidently.
Milo sent out his first Pokémon, Gossifleur, and Tom responded with Rookidee.
"Rookidee, let's show them what we've got!"
The battle began with Gossifleur using Leaf Tornado, but Rookidee dodged effortlessly, weaving through the attack.
"Rookidee, Pluck!" Tom commanded.
Rookidee swooped down, striking Gossifleur and eating its held berry in the process. Milo called for a counter with Round, but Rookidee avoided it again, landing a final Pluck that knocked Gossifleur out.
"Not bad at all," Milo said, recalling his Pokémon. "But let's see how you handle this!"
He sent out his ace Pokémon, Eldegoss, and immediately Dynamaxed it. The towering Pokémon loomed over the battlefield, its cotton-like body swirling with energy.
Tom grinned. "Time to go big or go home. Lycanroc, let's do this!"
As Lycanroc emerged, Tom Dynamaxed it in turn. The massive wolf Pokémon howled, its glowing eyes fixed on Eldegoss.
"Max Rockfall!" Tom shouted.
Lycanroc summoned a massive boulder and hurled it at Eldegoss, creating a sandstorm in the arena. Eldegoss retaliated with Max Overgrowth, restoring some of its health, but Lycanroc's next Max Strike was too much for it to handle. The Grass-type Pokémon collapsed, and the battle was over.
"Impressive," Milo said, smiling as he handed Tom the Grass Badge. "Your team's got real potential."
Calling Home
After the battle, Tom headed straight to the Pokémon Center to heal his team. While waiting, he used the Center's video phone to call his parents. His mother answered first, her face lighting up when she saw him.
"Tom! It's about time you called. How's my boy?"
"I'm doing great," Tom said, holding up the Grass Badge. "Just beat the Turffield Gym!"
His mother's eyes sparkled with pride. "That's wonderful! Your father's just in the kitchen—let me get him."
A moment later, Tom's father appeared on the screen, wiping his hands on a towel. "There's my champ! How'd it go?"
Tom recounted his journey, focusing on the progress his Pokémon had made. His parents listened intently, nodding and smiling.
"By the way," his mother added with a sly smile, "don't forget what I said about visiting when you reach Spikemuth. And bring Marnie with you!"
Tom groaned playfully. "I'll think about it, Mom."
Reconnecting with Friends
Next, Tom called Gloria, Hop, and Marnie in a group chat. Gloria's face appeared first, followed by Hop's, and finally Marnie's calm, steady expression.
"Tom!" Gloria exclaimed. "How are you?"
"Just beat Turffield's Gym," Tom said, holding up the badge again.
"Nice one, mate!" Hop said, grinning. "We're in Hulbury right now, about to challenge Nessa."
Tom wished them luck and told them about his plans to meet up with them after they all had their badges.
"Take care of yourself," Marnie said, her voice softer than usual. "And don't push yourself too hard."
"Same to you," Tom replied with a small smile.
As the call ended, Tom leaned back in his chair, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction. His journey was far from over, but with his team by his side, he felt ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.
"Let's keep moving forward," he said to himself. His next destination awaited.
