Chapter 21: Overtraining for Survival
Day One: The Calm Before the Storm
Tom had always been a fan of over-leveling his Pokémon in games, and now, living in the real Pokémon world, it seemed more important than ever. His Pokémon weren't just stats and sprites; they were his companions, his protectors, and his best chance at staying alive in this unpredictable world. With that in mind, Tom decided to dedicate three full days to intense training in the Wild Area, focusing on strengthening his team and deepening their bond.
The first day began early, with Tom setting up a camp near a riverbank. After a hearty breakfast shared with his Pokémon, he laid out the day's training plan. Lycanroc was tasked with practicing its Rock Slide to improve precision, using nearby boulders as targets. Toxel was assigned to refine its Fire Punch, and Tom introduced two additional moves for it to train: Thunder Wave, to improve its utility in battle, and Sludge Bomb, to take advantage of its Poison typing. Meanwhile, Wimpod trained to increase its endurance and combat instincts by sparring with Zigzagoon. Rookidee worked on speed drills, diving and weaving through an obstacle course made of tree branches and vines.
Tom focused on Toxel's training, helping it alternate between moves to avoid burnout. For Thunder Wave, Toxel practiced generating a steady electric current to immobilize moving targets, starting with slow Zigzagoon and progressing to quicker Rookidee. Sludge Bomb training involved precision; Tom set up leaf targets at varying distances, and Toxel hurled globs of toxic sludge, slowly improving its aim.
The day passed without incident. Tom's Pokémon worked tirelessly, only pausing for breaks to eat or rest in the shade. By evening, Toxel could reliably paralyze any opponent with Thunder Wave and hit most targets with Sludge Bomb. As night fell, the group settled around the campfire. Tom strummed his guitar, playing soothing melodies to lull his team into a well-earned sleep. The Wild Area felt peaceful, almost serene, and Tom allowed himself to relax, unaware of the chaos the next day would bring.
Day Two: The Tribe's Fury
The second day started as the first had, with Tom and his Pokémon diving into training. This time, however, the intensity ramped up. Tom pushed his team harder, testing their endurance with prolonged battles against wild Pokémon. Lycanroc took on a group of Bunnelby, Rookidee swooped down to outmaneuver a particularly feisty Ninjask, and Wimpod showcased its growing confidence by defeating a Joltik without flinching.
Meanwhile, Toxel rotated through its three primary moves. It paired Thunder Wave with its newly improved Fire Punch, immobilizing opponents before striking with fiery power. In another sparring match, it used Sludge Bomb to whittle down a wild Timburr, showcasing its growing versatility.
But the Wild Area was not without its dangers. Around midday, the tranquility shattered when Tom stumbled across a group of Stufful, their stubby arms flailing as they moved about in a coordinated manner. At first, Tom thought they were harmless, their plush appearances almost comical. But when he spotted a Bewear towering behind them, its eyes fixed on him, his blood ran cold.
Before he could back away, the Stufful let out a collective cry, and the entire group charged. There were at least a dozen of them, and the Bewear was not far behind. Tom quickly realized that battling was not an option; the sheer number of opponents would overwhelm his team, and the noise could attract even more Pokémon.
"Run!" he shouted to his Pokémon, recalling Zigzagoon and Wimpod to their Pokéballs while the others followed him on foot.
The Stufful tribe pursued relentlessly, their short legs surprisingly fast. Bewear led the charge, smashing through trees and boulders like they were paper. Tom used his psychic powers to slow them down, creating barriers and hurling obstacles into their path. But the effort was draining, and he could feel his energy waning with every passing minute.
Just when he thought he might collapse, his foot caught on a root, sending him tumbling into a hidden hole in the ground. He slid down a steep incline, his Pokémon following close behind, until he landed in a dimly lit underground cavern. For a moment, there was silence, broken only by the distant sounds of Stufful cries above.
Tom groaned, brushing dirt off his clothes. "Why didn't I just teleport out of there?" he muttered, feeling like an idiot. But there was no time for self-recrimination. The Stufful tribe seemed unwilling to follow him into the hole, giving him a chance to catch his breath.
Discovering the Cavern
The cavern was vast, its walls glistening with mineral deposits that sparkled in the faint light filtering through cracks above. Tom lit a small lantern he kept in his bag and began to explore, his Pokémon by his side. Lycanroc led the way, its sharp senses on high alert, while Rookidee flitted overhead, scouting the area.
As they ventured deeper, Tom noticed the cave was teeming with Pokémon. Zubat and Noibat hung from the ceiling, their eyes glowing faintly in the dark. Sableye skittered across the ground, their gem-like eyes glinting with curiosity. Occasionally, Tom spotted a shadowy figure darting past, too fast to identify.
It was during one of these explorations that Tom found a Dusk Stone, half-buried in the dirt. He picked it up, marveling at its dark, iridescent glow. "This could come in handy later," he said, tucking it into his bag.
The cavern seemed like the perfect place to train. The wild Pokémon were challenging but manageable, and the environment itself offered unique opportunities for growth. Tom decided to spend two more days here, using the time to strengthen his team further.
Day Three: Evolution in the Shadows
The next day, Tom focused on honing his team's skills in the cavern's unique environment. The confined space forced them to adapt their tactics, learning to navigate tight corridors and use the terrain to their advantage.
Lycanroc practiced using Accelerock to dart between stalagmites, while Toxel worked on hitting moving targets with Fire Punch, Thunder Wave, and Sludge Bomb. The rotation of moves allowed Toxel to simulate real battle scenarios, switching between offense and utility seamlessly. Rookidee's aerial maneuvers became even more precise as it dodged stalactites and swooped through narrow crevices. Wimpod, still wary but increasingly brave, held its ground against aggressive Sableye and even managed to fend off a mischievous Drifloon.
It was during a battle with a group of Noibat that Rookidee began to glow with a brilliant light. Tom watched in awe as it grew larger, its form shifting and changing. When the light faded, a majestic Corvisquire stood in its place, its sleek black feathers gleaming in the lantern's glow. Corvisquire let out a triumphant cry, flapping its powerful wings to test its newfound strength.
"Great job, Corvisquire!" Tom said, patting its beak. The evolution was a testament to their hard work, and it filled Tom with pride.
Day Four: The Final Push
On the last day in the cavern, Tom pushed his team harder than ever. He knew they were on the brink of greatness, and he wanted to make the most of their time in this challenging environment. Toxel, in particular, showed signs of nearing evolution. Its sparks crackled with more intensity, and its movements were sharper and more deliberate.
Tom set up mock battles, pitting his Pokémon against each other to refine their teamwork and strategy. Lycanroc and Corvisquire made an impressive duo, their speed and power complementing each other perfectly. Wimpod and Toxel also worked together, with Toxel providing ranged support using Sludge Bomb while Wimpod darted in for quick attacks.
By the end of the day, Tom's team was exhausted but visibly stronger. As they settled down to rest, Tom reflected on their journey so far. They had come a long way from the inexperienced group that had struggled against the Ace Trainer in the Galar Mine. Now, they were a force to be reckoned with.
With the Dusk Stone safely in his bag and his team ready for whatever lay ahead, Tom prepared to teleport back to Turffield. The Wild Area had tested them in ways he hadn't expected, but it had also brought them closer together. As he closed his eyes to focus on the teleportation, he couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the challenges to come.
"Next stop: Hulbury," he said with a grin.
