Chapter 23: The Battle 3
Sky had returned, but he was no longer the young man Rey and Finn had once mentored. The boy they had guided had become a shadow of himself, conflicted and unsteady. Rey was painfully aware of Sky's infatuation with her—a sentiment that had lingered, even as she tried to gently discourage it. During the dark years when Ben was gone, there had been fleeting moments when she considered Sky, but only because he reminded her of the man she truly longed for.
Her attempts to grow as a Gray Jedi and bring balance to the Force had defined those years of solitude. Rey had dedicated herself to helping others, striving to save those still clinging to the remnants of the dark side. But no matter how resilient and determined she appeared to others, she was weakened without Ben. She had once been a figure of hope, but his absence hollowed her. She needed him—to feel whole, to feel alive. The love she held for him was unyielding, and though few truly understood the depths of her heart, Rey didn't care. She would endure the haunting nightmares and the suffocating ache of loss, so long as she held onto the love that bound her to him.
Now, after years of heartache, Ben Solo was back in her life. His return should have filled her with unrestrained joy, but here stood Sky, her Padawan, before her, alongside Finn and Ben. Finn's disappointment in his Padawan was unmistakable. He couldn't comprehend how so many people seemed captivated by Rey—not just by her beauty, but by the savior-like presence she exuded. Though Finn himself had once harbored feelings for Rey, he had long since moved on, seeing her now as a dear friend. Still, he couldn't deny that Rey's aura drew people in, perhaps because of her unrelenting desire to help others find redemption.
Rey had become stronger over the past eight years. The challenges she faced, especially the loss of Ben, had forced her to grow. That heartbreak had changed her profoundly. It had isolated her, making her question her identity and her path forward. She tried to find peace within herself, but true peace had eluded her. Instead, she channeled her energy into mastering the Force and honing her skills, even as her thoughts remained consumed by Ben. While she distanced herself emotionally from her closest friends, starting the new Jedi Order had given her a renewed sense of purpose. She wanted to honor Ben's legacy, as both a Solo and a Skywalker, by building a better future for the galaxy.
Seeing Sky now, one of her first students, struggling so profoundly, cut deeply. It reminded her of the torment she had once witnessed in Ben Solo. She wanted Sky to survive his own journey, not just for his sake, but for his younger sister, Keira. Rey saw great promise in Keira—a courageous girl with a bright spirit and the potential to fully embrace the light if she chose. Keira lacked direction and struggled to fit in, but under Rey's mentorship, the two had begun to forge a bond that was both professional and personal, hinting at the possibility of a friendship.
Rey knew she had to save Sky—not just for Keira, but for the Order, for herself, and for Sky's own salvation. She didn't want to reciprocate his infatuation, but a small part of her recognized how it kept him tethered to her. That connection, however fraught, was a thread she couldn't afford to sever completely. Rey resolved to guide him, even as she wrestled with her own doubts. She wanted Sky to find peace, to overcome his inner turmoil, and to emerge as the Jedi she knew he could become. And perhaps, in saving him, she could finally prove to herself that she was capable of leading this new generation toward a brighter future.
But there was something else—something that made Ben's blood run cold. Sky wasn't there to fight Renatus. He was there for something far more personal. He was there for Rey.
Ben's jaw tightened, his eyes locking with Sky's as his heart pounded. For a moment, he faltered, overwhelmed by the unexpected presence of someone he once thought of as a potential ally. Sky wasn't the same Padawan Finn and Rey had trained. The boy they had once guided was gone, replaced by a young man consumed by obsession and uncertainty.
Ben could feel the subtle tension in the Force, a tug that linked Sky's motives directly to Rey. He didn't know whether it was infatuation or something darker, but it felt dangerous, possessive—a thread that needed to be severed.
Finn stepped forward, his lightsaber igniting with a hiss as he held it to Sky's throat. "Don't move closer. Renatus will end tonight," Finn hissed, his voice filled with unwavering determination.
Sky didn't flinch. Instead, his gaze shifted to Rey, ignoring the blade at his neck. "I don't care if Renatus lives or dies," he said, his voice steady and cold. "I'm here for my own motives."
"How did you even make it this far?" Finn demanded, his suspicion growing. "Poe isn't even halfway through the fortress."
"They trust me," Sky replied, his tone devoid of emotion. "The Sith believe I stand with them, but I haven't chosen a side. Not yet." His words hung in the air, a chilling reminder of the precarious line he was walking.
Rey's voice broke through the tension. "Ben, hold on," she urged, her hand resting lightly on his arm as the strain of maintaining the time loop became visible on his face.
"No," Ben shouted, shaking his head. "It's too much for you." His voice cracked under the weight of his resolve, but Rey didn't let go. She wouldn't let him carry the burden alone.
Sky's eyes lingered on Rey, and he took a step closer, his intentions clear. "Don't try it," Finn warned, pushing his saber closer to Sky's throat. "Ben needs her, and the galaxy needs Renatus gone."
Sky ignored Finn, his attention fixed solely on Rey. "It's time to leave," he said, his voice low and imploring. "I'll forgive everything, Rey. You know why I'm here—for you."
Rey's stomach turned at his words. She could feel the intensity of his obsession, and it weighed heavily on her. She already made her choice. She loved Ben, her partner, her equal. Sky couldn't see it—or wouldn't.
"Sky," Rey began, her voice steady but filled with firm resolve. "You don't need me. What you need is to find your own path. Redemption isn't something anyone can give you. It's something you have to choose for yourself."
Her words were like a blade, cutting through the fog of Sky's fixation. But his eyes burned with frustration and defiance. He didn't understand. He couldn't. To him, Rey was more than a mentor or a friend. She was a symbol of salvation, a lifeline in his storm of self-doubt and darkness.
Rey stepped forward, her lightsaber igniting with a snap-hiss, blocking Sky's path. "You have to let go," she said firmly. "I've walked my path, and you need to walk yours."
Sky's expression hardened, a mixture of anger and despair flashing across his face. "And what if I can't?" he asked, his voice tinged with desperation.
"You can," Rey replied, her voice softening slightly. "Because I've seen it. I've seen the good in you, Sky. But you have to want it for yourself. Not for me. Not for anyone else."
In the background, Ben gritted his teeth as the battle with Renatus reached its climax. The Sith Lord's defenses were crumbling, his connection to the dark side unraveling under the strain of the time loop. Ben's energy was faltering, but Rey's presence grounded him, their bond keeping him steady.
Rey's hand found Ben's once again, her touch grounding him as they faced the remnants of their past and the uncertainties of their future together. Finn, choosing to ignore Sky's presence, understood that the man was no longer concerned with stopping Renatus's death. With a determined strike, Finn plunged his saber into the trapped Renatus, the Sith staggering slightly as the time loop began to unravel. The moment it ended, Ben collapsed to his knees, gasping for air. Despite Ben's weakened state, he rose with Rey's support, and together, the three of them stood united, their lightsabers pointed at Renatus in a final act of defiance. Sky, observing the scene from the shadows, remained uncertain, torn between his past allegiances and the choice before him. Rey knelt beside him, her focus on comforting him as Finn stood tall, facing the injured Renatus.
Finn lunged forward, his saber striking Renatus with precision. The Sith Lord let out a guttural laugh, even as he crumpled to his knees. "The dark side is eternal," he sneered, his voice thick with venom. "You'll never escape it, Ben. It's in your blood."
Ben's grip on his saber tightened, his anger flaring. "I've made my choice," he growled. "I am not bound to the darkness anymore."
Darth Renatus clutched his side, staggering but not falling. He stood, the mockery fading from his voice, replaced by something more sinister. "Do you not think I've been generous, Ben? I spared her—your Rey—I didn't have to do that, but I did. Don't you think that's kind?"
Ben's eyes widened in rage, his heart pounding. "You tortured her," he hissed. "You gave her to Sky! She's my fiancée now, Cameron! She's everything! Don't think for a second that I would ever return to the darkness for anything other than her!"
A dark, bitter smile spread across Renatus's face. "Well, maybe that's what you choose, Kylo Ren," he taunted, a dark gleam in his eyes. "Embrace it, Ben. It's your true nature."
Ben's blood boiled at the name, and with a roar of fury, he summoned the Force. He thrust his hands forward, using the full power of his anger to slam Renatus against the stone wall with a violent crash. The room shook as the Sith Lord grunted, pinned by the weight of Ben's power.
Renatus's voice, strained but defiant, continued. "Yes, Kylo," he said, a cruel satisfaction in his tone. "Feel the power. Feel it coursing through you. Remember it... It's your true nature."
Ben's entire body shook with the strain of his emotions, the darkness whispering in his ear, urging him to give in. His chest heaved with anger, the rage threatening to overwhelm him. But he didn't listen. He couldn't. Not now.
"Enough!" Ben shouted, his voice raw with fierce determination. The Force surged through him, radiating outward like a tidal wave, stripping Renatus of what little strength remained. With a final, crushing push, Ben slammed Renatus against the wall with such force that the Dark Lord crumpled, unconscious. Ben wasn't sure if he had taken his last breath, but he wouldn't give him the chance to recover. He moved closer, ready to finish it.
Suddenly, the sound of distant footsteps echoed through the halls. More Sith cultists were infiltrating the fortress, their dark presence felt like an approaching storm. Ben's senses flared, warning him of the danger drawing near.
From the shadows, Keira stepped forward, igniting her lightsaber with a sharp hiss as she scanned the scene. Her eyes widened with confusion and caution as she took in the sight of Renatus's nearly lifeless body, Ben standing tall, his chest rising and falling with heavy breaths, radiating tension. When her gaze landed on Sky, her brother, her heart twisted. His uncertain presence weighed heavily in the air, and Keira could feel the chaos reverberating through every corner of the fortress.
Even with Renatus on the brink of defeat, Sky's focus shifted to Rey. He gripped her arm, urgently trying to pull her away. Yet Rey, her yellow lightsaber blazing fiercely, broke free and faced Sky head-on, engaging him in battle. Their movements crackled with energy, Rey's swift precision matched by the intensity in her eyes.
Nearby, Finn fought off the Sith cultists, his blade flashing in the dim light. Keira knew time was running out. Ignoring her injuries, she joined Finn, her lightsaber cutting through the darkness. But each step grew heavier; pain and exhaustion were catching up to her.
Sky's gaze flickered toward Keira, noticing her struggle. For a brief moment, he hesitated, torn between the battle and his sister's safety. Before he could act, Rey's furious voice cut through the chaos. In one fluid motion, she brought her lightsaber to Sky's neck, forcing him to his knees.
"I'm not your savior," Rey spat, breathe ragged from the fight. Her eyes burned with anger, yet her focus shifted briefly to Ben, battling ferociously against the cultists. She sensed his rage but also the surge of hope and love anchoring him to the light. Despite his turmoil, he fought for them all.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed as Rose, Poe, and Chewie stormed into the fray. "We need to fall back, Rey!" Poe shouted, blaster raised as he covered their retreat. Rey nodded, her gaze fixed warily on Sky.
"I'll help you," Sky said, voice strained, torn between two paths. His eyes revealed his inner conflict. His plan had been to strike against both Ben and Renatus, proving to Rey that he could save her. But now, amid the raging battle, he realized the futility of that plan. For now, he would align with Rey—at least outwardly. He couldn't let his sister die, not like this.
Rey's eyes narrowed, suspicion clear but urgency winning out. "Fine, help," she snapped, frustration lacing her voice. She refocused her saber, cutting down more cultists. Ben, Finn, and their allies fought alongside her, the battle intensifying with each passing second.
Ben was a blur of motion, his lightsaber slicing through opponents, the Force guiding him. Exhausted and fueled by rage, he felt Rey's determination keeping him grounded. Together, they pushed forward, gaining ground against the Stormtroopers. Yet the sorcerers abandoned Renatus's unconscious form, their focus shifting to Sky.
Ben clenched his jaw, torn between finishing the fight and ensuring their survival. Rey grabbed his hand. "Ben, stop! We're falling back. Renatus is as good as dead!" she shouted, urgency in her voice.
He hesitated, eyes lingering on Renatus's faintly breathing body, then shifted to Sky, who reached for Rey. More Stormtroopers flooded in, and Ben knew they couldn't withstand the sorcerers' power. He had to leave—to protect Rey and prepare for the final battle.
Sky froze, realizing the Sith cultists intended to claim him. Resolute, he grabbed Rey's hand, ignoring Ben's glare. "Rey, I think I'm in love with you," he said, voice steady. "I'm staying behind to ensure they don't follow you or Keira. This is the only way to protect you both."
Tears welled in Rey's eyes. "Be careful. Thank you," she whispered. She wanted to stay, to help him, but knew he understood the stakes. If he didn't hold them off, none of them would escape. Despite their complicated relationship, she couldn't deny the weight of his choice.
As Sky moved quickly leaving Rey and the others he moved toward the sorcerers, one unleashed a wave of dark energy, knocking him to the ground. Rey and the others had no choice but to run. Keira, unaware of her brother's sacrifice, fled alongside Rey, Finn, and Ben, hearts pounding with the urgency of escape.
Rey wanted to believe there was still hope for Sky—that his sacrifice meant he was walking the gray path or perhaps even the light. Could someone devoted to darkness really sacrifice himself for his sister and their cause?
Ben, jaw tight, pulled Rey toward the exit. Desperation flashed in his eyes, and Rey sensed the turmoil beneath his hardened exterior. Together, they navigated the chaos, joined by Finn, Rose, Poe, Chewie, and a shaken Keira.
Aboard the Millennium Falcon, the hum of the engines filled the tense silence. Finn touched Rey's shoulder comfortingly; Poe's nod conveyed silent understanding. Rose comforted Keira, who sat quietly, tears streaming, unsure of Sky's fate.
Ben stood apart, expression distant, burdened by unspoken thoughts. Memories of his own struggles with darkness resurfaced, especially now with Sky. The young man had been a threat—not just to their mission, but to Ben's fragile connection to the light. A part of him felt relief, though he couldn't share that with Rey. Sky's sacrifice would leave deep scars, particularly for Keira.
As they sped away from the battle, Rey looked back one final time, her heart torn between the past and the uncertain future.
