Chapter 3 ~ Recovery
Hermione felt her legs smack fo the floor, dangerously close to giving way. Opening her eyes she realised she was in the middle of a forest clearing. Looking around, Hermione noticed a young woman holding her upright. She began to panic. The woman clearly saw this and rushed to calm her down.
"Wotcher Hermione, your alright, I'm Tonks a friend of Dumbledores." Hermione nodded but the panic still didnt subside. Three loud cracks sounded behind her causing her to flinch violently. "We need to get her up to the castle," she heard someone say. Turning her head slightly ahe was thrilled to see a familar face.
"Profesor Lupin?"Hermione breathed curiosuly, struggling to breath deeply.
"Yes Hermione it's me were going to bring you to the hospital wing alright?" Nodding her head she was carried by someone unbeknownst to her as the group raced her up to the castle.
Upon entering the hospital wing Hermione knew she was truly safe. All of a sudden all the pain she had endured came crashing back. Letting out a small yelp of pain, she was settled on a bed.
"Call Severus, Poppys on holiday and will be until term,"Remus called faintly to Tonks. Nodding Tonks ran from the hospital wing. Spasms began to wrack Hermiones body and the pain in her arm increased, her vision began to swim. A black cloak clouded her vision momentarily as voices sounded far away.
"Miss Granger. Miss Granger!" Severus called to her. Looking into Hermiones eyes he saw the dialation increase. "Lupin, I need blood replenisher and a dreamless sleep."
Suddenly Hermione felt her mouth being forced open as a mysterious liquid was being shoved down her throat. The immediate invasion set Hermione on edge causing her to struggle, eyes wide.
"Lupin hold her down, I can't help her if she flailing."Hands held down Hermiones wrists. Flashing back to this previous expierence she began to scream.
"No I don't know anything, stop it, I don't know." Hermione cried, fighting against the hands holding her down. Squeezing her eyes shut tears fell once more. She felt her jaw open again and another. potion trickle down her throat, in her attempt to resist Hermione felt her mouth being covered and nose plugged. Just like that her world disappeared.
...
Snapes POV
"Prf'esor! She upstairs! Hurry!" Tonks yelled as she busted into her former professors door. Snape didnt need to be told twice as to who this "she" was about. Taking it to a run he barged into the hospital wing seeing Hermione Grangers body thrashing. Cruciatus curse after effects no doubt. Rushing to her bedside he looked into her eyes.
""Miss Granger. Miss Granger!" They were emotionless and dialted.
""Lupin, I need blood replenisher and a dreamless sleep." Lupin took off at a run towards Madam Pomphreys cupboards. Returning with both potions, Severus immediatley took the blood replenisher. Opening her mouth his attempt to pour it down he throat failed. The girl on the bed began to thrash forcefully, trying to escape him.
""Lupin hold her down, I can't help her if she flailing," Severus called out. This seemed to upset the girl more as she started screaming.
"No I don't know anything, stop it, I don't know," Hermione sobbed, her eyes squeezed shut.
"She's not with us right now..."Snaps murmured, his face went as white as the bedding. He felt Remus stiffen next to him.
"Severus.."
"What," he barked at the wolf.
"Severus her arm." Glancing at the struggling figures arm, he noticed what had caused Lupin distress. The word Mudblood was carved haphazardly into her skin. Shoving a quick dreamless sleep down her throat, the potions master began his work.
...
A bright light invaded Hermiones eyes as she returned from a state of unconsciousness. Blinking away the dots before her eyes she looked around the room. Hospital wing, Hermione thought, suddenly painfully aware of her aching muscles and headache. The memory of the nights events came flooding back to her. Sitting up she discovered she was alone, still in her clothes.
On shaking legs, Hermione tried to stand upright, taking a few steps, she fell fo the floor with a bang.
"What the hell- Miss Granger! Blasted girl why are you out of bed." Hermione looked up at him confused.
"Professor Snape? What are you doing here?"
"What am I doing here? What-" Snape began to sputter at the collaspsed girl before him. "Stupid girl let me help you up." Picking Hermione up by her arms, she layed back down under the blanket, sitting up against her pillow. Pulling up a chair Professor Snape sat beside her, concern evident in his features. "Miss Granger what do you remember all that happened last night?" Paling slightly Hermione dropped his gaze. "Miss Granger." He said desperately. Sh stayed silent staring at her hands. "Do you remeber your rescue?" Looking up at the onyx eyes she nodded.
"I remember apparating with a girl, Tonks I think? We apparated into a forest and then Professor Lupin was there with two others. Next thing I know I'm in here..." She trailed off.
"What is it Granger?"
"I think I was back there...I don't know how she got me I was here. I saw you but I was there... Were you there?" If the potion master was shocked he didnt show it. His face stayed stony as he stared at the clearly tortured girl infrint of him.
"No Miss Granger. I was not there." A curious look came upon Hermiones face, her eyebrows scrunching together.
"It's odd. I was back there again, it hurt. I was pinned down again..." Tears threatened to fall again.
"Miss Granger... You were not back there. You were in the hospital wing the entire time." Hermione looked up at her professor quizzically.
"Then how-"
"It was the potions Miss Granger," Snape said exasperatedly. "Lupin had to pin you down while I forced the potions down your throat because your were thrashing around like a compacted hippogriff." Hermiones burned pink slightly at her stupidity. Of course you couldn't have gone back there. Stupid idea...
Giving herself a once over Hermione glanced at her arms. My left arm is bandanged...What happen? The memories of being held down, the pain Hermione had previously felt in her arm returned back at full speed. Curious, she reached out to unwrap the bandage to see the underlying damage. Snape noticed what Hermione was going to do.
"No!" A strangled shout left his throat. Confused, Hermione looked up at him.
"Whats wrong? What did she do?" Panic engulfed her. Breathing rapidly, Hermione felt her heartbeat spike. Sensing her rising panic, Snape retrieved a calming draught.
"I think it best to give you the draught before you see what lies under this bandage." Taking the potion in her shaking hands. Hermione downed the liquid and felt a tranquil aroma fill her. Reaching again for the bandage, she slowly unraveled it revealing a scar that made her skin chill.
M U D B L O O D
The tears that threatened to fall earlier did just that. Tears poured down her face as her vision blurred.
"That sadistic bitch," Hermione whispered, giving Snape quite a shock.
"I'm currently working on a treatmenr to heal the wound, I haven't seen anything like if im afraid." Hermione nodded despite her wrecking sobs. "I will give you some privacy," Snape murmured. Walking away from the crying girl.
...
Strolling quickly through the corriders of Hogwarts, Severus Snape reaced his private quarters. Walking towards his fireplace, he grabbed a pinch of floo powder. Stepping into the fireplace, the professor dropped the powder calling out "Number 12 Grimmuald Place." Exiting the fireplace, Snape walked into the kitchen, the air changing ever so subtly. The Weasley clan, Sirus, and Remus all sat at the table waiting for her breakfast. Mrs. Weasley looked up from her scrambled eggs. He noticed her face looked as if she had aged ten years over the past few days.
"Severus! Is Hermione alright?" The children turned to Severus with a hopeful glint in their eyes while Sirus and Remus' faces remained solemn. Ripping his glare from his students he turned back to Mrs. Weasley.
"Yes, she is awake and stable." Breaths released all over the kitchen.
"Thank Merlin," Ron said heaving out a great breath.
"Oh thank you so much Severus. Would you like to join us for breakfast?" Shaking his head, Severus walked back to the fireplace.
...
Wiping her eyes she traced the scar lightly with her finger. The scar stung at the touch causing her to cry more. Rewrapping her wound, Hermione layed back down into the bed. The tears began to slow and Hermione drifted off to sleep.
"Tell me what I need to hear and you can go home muddy" Bellatrix whispered into Hermiones ear. Blood was pounding in her head as she turned to face to her torturer. Looking deep into her eyes. Hermione spat in her eyes. "CRUCIO!" The pain once again was agonzing. Her screams filled the room, ear splitting shrieks. When Bellatrix let up the curse she kicked Hermione in the stomach. Clutching her stomach Hermione whispered
"Please...I don't know...I don't know..."
"CRUCIO!"
"GRANGER! MISS GRANGER!" Hermione felt herself being shook awake. Her eyes fluttered open finding herself face to facd with hee potions professor. Her throat was raspy as if she had been screaming. Was I screaming?
"Wotz happen.." Hermione whispered hoarsley, looking anywhere but her professors face.
"A nightmare I presume?" Nodding Hermione sat up. Snaps walked from her bed she heard him speak, "The headmaster will be here to talk about what had occured during your time at Lestrange Manor. Hermiones blood froze.
"What... No no I don't-"
"Miss Granger that is not your choice to make, you will speak to the headmaster wether you like it or not." Hermione nodded slightly.
"Yes professor," her voice barely above a whisper. Severus only felt slightly bad for being so forceful as he gathered his healing supplies. Sitting back at her bed side he took her left forearm. Pulling away quickly Hermione brought her arm to her chest.
"What are you doing?" She shouted at him. Scowling he pulled her arm back.
"Attempting to heal your arm you stupid girl." Snape spat at her. Nodding once more she looked away and allowed him to work.
Snape worked meticulously for hours as Hermiones arm burned and stung. Gasps of pain left her throat as he poked and prodded.
"Is it any better?" Hermione asked, trying to keep the fear out of her tone. If her professor heard her fear he didn't acknowledge it.
"No Miss Granger, it isn't..." Turning her head she glazed over her wound, noticing its increased severity. "I will rewrap and gauze your arm to slow down the blood. Ill be back in the morning then redress your wound. Take the vial of dreamless sleep before you rest."
"Yes professor." Taking the vial with her right arm, Hermion downed the potion and welcomed the darkness.
...
Light slowly crept in through the curtains of the hospital allowing Hermione to awake from her dreamless slumber. A nights sleep without nightmares plaguing her sleep was definetly helpful. Opening her eyes Hermione realised she wasnt alone. The headmaster and the potions professor were conversing ib low voices at ghe edge of her bed.
"Miss Granger! I hope you slept well!" Dumbledore ssid brightly, his eyes twinkling.
"Morning professor," Hermione answered groggilly, sitting up with suprising ease.
"Due to these unforseen circumstances I was hoping you could inform me of the previous events after a bit of breakfast." The panic began to squirm in Hermione stomach. She didn't want to talk about it, she wanted to bury it and never see it again. Not responding the headmaster snapped his fingers as a hearty breakfast appeared at the foot of Hermiones bed. "Tuck in!"
...
After a silent breakfast the plates disappeared and a more serious face tookover the headmaster.
"Severus leave us for a moment please," Dumbledore asked. Curtly nodding, Snape left the bedpost, his cloak billowing behind him. "Miss Granger I need you to tell me the events that happen in your words at Lestrange Manor." Rising anxiety began to overtake Hermione.
"Professor, I really don't see that necessary," She answered shakily.
"I disagree Miss Granger, I would rather you tell me what happen there." Hermione nodded reluctantly as she played with a loose thread in her covers.
"Well...she wanted information."
"She?"
"Bellatrix Lestrange." Waving his hand lightly he urged her to continue.
"She wanted to know where the headquarters of the order of the phoinex. I didnt know what she was talking about, she just kept asking." Hermione said, tears threatening to spill over.
"The Order of the Phoinex is a secret defense association by my creation during the first wizarding war to combat Voldemort." She flinched at the name. "Due to his unfortunate return I have reinstated the Order and set up a headquarters." Taking a deep breath Hermione felt the panic dim. "What happen there Miss Granger." Her eyes blurred slightly.
"She was so angry," Hermione whispered. "Everytime I didn't answer she casted that awful curse. She wouldnt stop," Hermiones choked voice continued on, "and then after a few hours she got bored and-" She stopped short. Inconspicuously glancing at her left forearm, unfortunately Dumbledore caught this act.
"You need give me no more Miss Granger, thank you for your time." And with that Dumbledore stood up leaving Hermione staring at her hands attempting to stop the tears from flowing.
...
After Hermione had recomposed herself Professor Snape returned to her bedside.
"I must rewrap your arm Miss Granger." Holding out her left arm she looked away once more.
"Professor?"
"Yes Miss Granger?"
"Will I be able to go home soon?" Snape stopped for a minute causing Hermione to turn her head back.
"It is not safe there. You will not return home for the rest of the sunmer holidays. Your belongings have been moved to headquarters where you will live after your time here," Snape said shortly leaving no room for argument. Ignoring this tactic Hermione plunged on.
"But sir, my parents! What about them?" Dread filled her as she thougjt of her parents. "Do they know what happen? They must be so worried! Are they okay? Are they alive? Are-"
"Miss Granger panicking will do no good and if you continue to ramble I shan't answer your questions," Snape snapped at her angrily. Hermiones eyes wandered to her blanket embarrased of her outburst.
"Your parents are aware of what has happen, they are staying in a safe house out in the country for now." Relieved Hermione sighed as her professor rewrapped her arm. The potions master gathered hus supplies leaving her bedpost before she called out,
"Professor is it healing?" His face darkened significantly.
" No, it won't Miss Granger. I apologize." Hermione stilled. He left without a trace. Having no tears left to spill, she simply looked up at the ceiling until she drifted off into a light slumber.
