Chapter XIV
Eruanna Úlumiel sealed the chest that Angoruinë was placed in alongside Glamdring. Her best friends, Miluiel and Caladhwen burst into her cabin.
"I'm so excited!", Miluiel squealed, her light blue eyes gleaming with happiness as her blonde hair bounced behind her. She hugged Eruanna fiercely.
"As am I", Eruanna responded, grinning. This was the first time her smile reached her eyes in months.
"I'm also looking forward to it", Caladhwen smiled, grey eyes gleaming. "I hope I didn't leave anything behind in Middle-Earth
"She had to check like a hundred times to make sure she had everything, including a dozen hairbrushes, all her dresses, that one shawl she spent ages sewing and her bow and quiver", Miluiel teased her friend. Caladhwen sheepishly ran her finger through her raven hair.
Eruanna laughed. "Typical Caladhwen", she said. Their reunion after the War of the Ring had been among the happiest. Being sundered was hard on them.
"What are you looking forward to the most?", Eruanna asked her friends.
"Seeing my parents again", Miluiel responded.
"Seeing my parents, aunts, uncles and cousins", Caladwhen added. "Being with family is on another level of happiness. What about you?"
"Meeting my grandmothers and seeing my family again. Those I grew up with and those Mandos restored to life", Eruanna responded.
"I wanted to ask something of you", Caladhwen said, looking at Eruanna.
"What is it?", Eruanna inquired.
"This time, we won't be parting again. No matter how dangerous, Miluiel and I want to be with you through everything. We weren't able to be with you during the War of the Ring and the shadow looming over you nearly broke you. This time, we stick together."
"I didn't want to drag you into peril", Eruanna responded with a smile.
"This time, we'll gladly share in your perils", Miluiel fiercely declared.
Eruanna smiled and hugged her loyal friends. Glorfindel came onto the scene and smiled as he watched the three elleths embrace each other.
"Eruanna", he called.
She looked at him with a smile. "Yes?"
"We are almost there", Glorfindel said.
Eruanna beamed at him. "Good", she said with a grin.
She left her cabin, exchanging smiles with Feren and looked up, watching her dragons soar over the dozens of ships. Ceveniel let out a squeal of joy as she saw her Mistress. Eruanna smiled and went to climb on her back.
"Are you sure riding in a dress would be wise?", Feren asked his Lady.
Eruanna was wearing a dress which revealed her shoulders. The ombre dress was white at the top before slowly fading into a shade of blue. Eruanna wore her circlet with a dragon head at the center. She also wore the broach her aunt Arwen had given her.
"It wouldn't be my first time, Feren", she reassured him. With that, she mounted Ceveniel.
The golden sands of Valinor could be seen up ahead with crowds of elves awaiting them. Tol Eressëa and the Tower of Avallónë took Eruanna's breath away as she flew past it.
Ceveniel circled around the large group of elves who were stunned to see elemental dragons. Eruanna Úlumiel spotted her gleeful family and waved to them. Naurion, Sûlion and Faroniel all hovered over the elves who looked at them in awe. Ceveniel finally landed when the last of the ships docked. Elves celebrated their own reunions as Eruanna dismounted the dragon and watched as Ceveniel rose up into the sky to join her siblings.
The Dragoness kneeled on the ground and felt the golden sands of Valinor beneath her fingers.
Oddly enough, it felt like home.
She rose to her feet and smiled broadly as her family came into view. The first to greet her was Elrond. Eruanna and Elrond practically ran towards each other and she tackled him to the ground. Laughter rose between them.
"I told you I would come", she said with a grin.
"Thank the Valar", Elrond responded. He'd haunted the docks for the past century waiting for her anxiously, though many had assured him she would come.
They rose to their feet and dusted themselves off before Eruanna turned slightly somber. "I must tell you", she said."Aunt Arwen has passed on. We knew this would happen but I don't think we were prepared for the grief it would cause."
Elrond closed his eyes in pain. "No, we were not. I am glad you saw her to her last days as I was unable to", he responded.
Eruanna smiled.
"Take comfort in the fact that she at least had a happy life", she said with a smile.
Her uncles came and enthusiastically greeted her. She embraced them both before embracing Celeborn and Galadriel, who had come to greet her as well.
Just then, Eruanna looked over and saw Celebrian, a beautiful elleth with silver eyes and silver hair with a slight hint of gold.
"Daernaneth?", Eruanna asked, recognizing Celebrian from the paintings in Imladris. Celebrian smiled and nodded, pulling the only grandchild she ever knew, into her embrace. Eruanna breathed her flowery scent and all of a sudden it seemed as if she knew Celebrian her whole life.
Celebrian pulled back and looked at Eruanna. Eruanna looked so much like Arwen and Hiriel and so different at the same time. She was beautiful and flawless.
"I knew you were beautiful, but I never imagined how true it would be", Celebrian said.
"You are more beautiful and noble than I ever imagined", Eruanna Úlumiel replied back with a genuine smile.
Eruanna then felt another presence behind her. She turned around to see another elleth with deep blue eyes, platinum blonde hair and fair skin, standing slightly in front of Thranduil. Next to Thranduil was an even taller ellon who had long silver hair and blue-grey eyes.
"Daernaneth Itarille?", Eruanna questioned the elleth.
"I see you have my eyes", Itarille said with a
chuckle. She embraced Eruanna who was at first shocked, but then she relaxed and embraced herback.
"I am pleased to meet you, granddaughter. I am sorry that Celebrian and I missed so much of your life."
"That was no fault of yours", Eruanna smiled. "I'm glad to see both of you", she smiled at Celebrian as well. Then she turned to Thranduil and embraced him tightly.
"I'm so glad you have come, sunflower", he murmured into her hair. She giggled and kissed him on the cheek. Then she turned to greet her parents and Gimli.
"Eruanna", Legolas murmured.
"No words now", Hiriel said gently.
"Words won't do this moment justice", with that she hugged her daughter tightly. Eruanna embraced them back before bending to kiss Gimli on the cheek, making the dwarf blush.
Suddenly, they heard a low growl and a barely muffled gulp. The tall silver-haired ellon was being examined by Sûlion. Eruanna immediately recognized the elf.
"Oropher", she murmured.
Thranduil nodded. The mystery elf was none other than her paternal great-grandfather Oropher, who had been restored to life by Mandos.
"Sûlion, leave him be. He is my kin", Eruanna smiled at the black dragon.
The beast examined Oropher who stared him down. With a hint of respect in his eyes, Sûlionbacked away and flew up to rejoin his siblings.
"Apologies if he scared you", Eruanna said, casually.
"But don't worry. Elemental dragons don't fancy eating elves. Or horses."
"I wasn't scared of him", Oropher denied, but a smile crossed his usually stern face as he looked upon his only great-grandchild. "Welcome, Eruanna", he raised her hand to his lips and kissed it. "It's good to finally meet you. I've heard much about you." She blushed a bit at his attention.
"It's nice to finally see you in person", she responded with a grin.
That night, the House of Oropher were guests in Elrond's home as were all those who came with them. Elrond and Celebrian settled in a valley similar to Imladris and their people had settled with them. Galadriel and Celeborn normally stayed in Tirion, but they chose to spend the night laughing with their family. Eruanna even used the time to get acquainted with her grandmothers and great-grandfather whom she'd been so happy to meet.
The next day, the House of Oropher set out, leading their people with them. Eruanna, Itarille and Oropher used the time to get more acquainted with each other. Oropher and his people had settled in woods the vala Yavanna had grown for them. The forest kingdom reminded Eruanna of Eryn Lasgalen.
The forest was a lot like Eryn Lasgalen but more grand and beautiful. Eruanna marveled at the emerald canopies draped over her head and felt the majesty and power of the forest. They came to an area where there was a large elvish settlement with tall, gorgeous buildings and a mighty fortress carved into the mountains behind the forest. Elves piled out, celebrating their reunions and many looked at their dragon Princess in awe. The dragons marveled at their new home, their eyes holding curiosity Eruanna had never seen before.
The royal family strode inside the fortress and continued down the hall. The dragons had shrunk in size just to fit. Eruanna noticed an elleth who was sitting in an armchair. She had pale blue eyes and platinum blonde hair.
The elleth immediately rose to her feet and looked at Eruanna with wide eyes and a hopeful smile on her face. Oropher went over and something to the elleth in elvish. Eruanna listened and realized the elleth was indeed her great-grandmother, Queen Mereneth, wife of Oropher.
"Eruanna?", Mereneth asked the younger elleth. Eruanna Úlumiel nodded, at a loss for words. The beauty of Mereneth was great, much like Galadriel. What should she say to this ancient elleth whose eyes held wisdom the likes of which only Galadriel had?
"I have longed to meet you", Mereneth said warmly. Her warm demeanor soothed Eruanna's nerves much like Galadriel's did.
"Great-grandmother", Eruanna replied in shock.
She reached up and brushed back some of Eruanna's black hair.
"It may be a bit much. After all you come from two large families. But it will all soon seem as if it had never been different", Mereneth said. Eruanna couldn't help but smile at her warm disposition.
"Come. I will show you to your chamber", Mereneth took her by the hand. "We'll see everyone else at dinner. Join us, Itarille", she invited her daughter-in-law along.
The three elleths walked into the royal wing with the dragons loyally following Eruanna having shifted to a smaller size. Mereneth opened the door and Eruanna's eyes widened as she stepped inside the large chamber. The large bed had a floral canopy draped over it. Windows allowed a lot of sunlight inside and there were pictures of Eruanna hanging on the walls. A shelf full of her favorite books was also there along with a seating area with two armchairs. It was much more beautiful than her room back in Middle-Earth.
Turning back to Itarille and Mereneth, Eruanna beamed. "This is beyond anything I've ever imagined. Thank you. I really don't know what to say."
"We were happy to do it for you. Oropher especially was a great help", Itarille chirped.
"Well, I'll have to thank him as well", Eruanna chuckled. "What will I do after I settle in?"
Mereneth had a gentle but firm look on her face, one that Eruanna suspected she'd used on Thranduil. "You will rest. Take as much time as you need. We have all the time in the world. I sailed West after Oropher fell in Daglorad but life in the blessed realm has not hindered my eyes. I see a small hint of a shadow lurking in your eyes. I saw it in my son and grandson as well as my husband and several others."
"That shadow may always stay", Itarille said. "But your heart and soul needs to heal. You have been through much. We heard of how Sauron tried to corrupt you and how you held Eryn Lasgalen together upon your father's sudden abdication. Not to mention the battles that still haunt you and the fact that you came here after losing your aunt. That is a lot for someone so young."
"When I came here, I had a flurry of emotions rushing through me, mostly grief and guilt", Mereneth admitted. "I had brought others with me so I wasn't able to properly mourn until afterYavanna grew this forest and I began to oversee the construction of our city. But you have arrivedat a better time, per se. You've done honorably by our people. Now, you must find peace. Mourn, relax and do anything that heals you, child. Do you understand?"
Eruanna nodded. The elleths embraced each other and Eruanna couldn't help but display a small smile.
She was home.
Note: This is my interpretation of Valinor. The Valar Mandos is the God of Death and he allows elves to be regenerated after dying, letting them live in Valinor like he did with Oropher and Itarille. Some elves sail to Valinor like Galadriel and Elrond.
