The morning sun shone brightly over Amity Park as Avi Tesla made her way back to Fentonworks, excitement buzzing through her veins. Yesterday had been more productive than she'd imagined—meeting Jack and Maddie Fenton, getting a tour of their lab, and filming her first interview for her ghost-hunting series. But it wasn't the tech or the gadgets that kept her mind racing all night.
It was Danny.
There was something about him she couldn't shake—a spark between them, undeniable and electric. He was mysterious, guarded, but intriguing. And if there was one thing Avi loved, it was a good puzzle. Danny Fenton was a mystery she was determined to solve.
She reached the front steps of Fentonworks and knocked, her camera bag slung over her shoulder, her oversized graphic tee falling comfortably over her curves. The door opened, and there he was—Danny, looking like he had just rolled out of bed, his messy black hair as charmingly tousled as the day before. His blue eyes locked onto hers, and for a split second, something flickered there—recognition, surprise, maybe even... interest.
"Avi?" he said, his voice low and slightly confused. "You're back?"
She grinned, leaning casually against the doorframe. "Miss me already?"
Danny blinked, thrown off balance by her playful tone. "Uh... No. I mean, I—" He stopped himself, clearly unsure how to respond. His fingers tightened on the door for a moment before he stepped aside. "Come on in."
"Thanks." Avi breezed past him, her shoulder brushing his just enough to make him stiffen. She smirked to herself, enjoying how easy it was to rattle him. There was something endearing about the way he tried to keep his cool.
She glanced around the empty lab. "Your parents out?"
Danny nodded, closing the door behind her. "Yeah. They're out running errands. Should be back in a few hours."
Perfect.
"Good," Avi said, setting her camera bag down on a nearby counter. "I was hoping I'd get some one-on-one time with you."
Danny tensed, trying hard to play it cool. "What for?"
Avi tilted her head, her bright green eyes sparkling. "I figured it might be nice to hang out without your folks around." She leaned on the counter, her curves pressing against the edge just enough to catch Danny's eye. "Unless you've got something better to do?"
He opened his mouth, probably to come up with some excuse, but nothing came out. Instead, he shifted awkwardly, his arms crossing over his chest like a shield. "No... I don't have anything else going on."
Avi smiled, a little softer this time. "Good. I was starting to think you were trying to avoid me."
Danny exhaled a quiet laugh, though there was a flicker of something deeper in his gaze—like he was caught between wanting to let his guard down and being too afraid to.
"You always this persistent?" he asked, trying to sound casual, but Avi could see the hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"Only with people worth it," she said with a wink, enjoying the way his cheeks reddened slightly.
Danny looked away, rubbing the back of his neck in that awkward, charming way that made Avi's heart flutter. He wasn't used to being flirted with—she could tell. And that only made her want to do it more.
Danny swallowed hard, trying—and failing—not to meet her gaze. "You're... different," he admitted, his voice quieter now.
"Good different, I hope," Avi teased, her grin playful but warm.
Danny chuckled, shaking his head. "Yeah... Good different."
For a moment, the air between them felt heavy with something unspoken. Avi could see it.
"Relax, Fenton," she said gently. "I'm not here to pry into your secrets. Just figured we could be friends. Maybe more, if you're lucky."
Danny's eyes flickered with surprise, but there was a trace of a smile on his lips now—small, hesitant, but real.
"Friends, huh?" he said, his tone softening.
Avi nodded, her gaze steady and open. "For now."
Danny looked at her for a long moment, as if weighing his options. Then, finally, he exhaled a quiet laugh and shook his head.
"You're not going to give up, are you?"
Avi grinned. "Nope."
They ended up sitting side by side at the counter, talking about everything and nothing. Danny surprised her—he was funny, sharp, and way more interesting than he gave himself credit for. And every time their shoulders brushed, every time their eyes met, Avi felt that spark between them grow stronger.
"So, what's it like living in a house full of ghost hunters?" she asked, kicking her feet playfully.
Danny shrugged, his smile faint but genuine. "It's... weird. But it's home."
Avi studied him for a moment, sensing the layers beneath his words—the weight he carried, the things he wasn't saying. But instead of pressing, she nudged his shoulder lightly.
"Hey," she said softly. "For what it's worth, I think you're pretty cool."
Danny glanced at her, surprised by the sincerity in her voice. "Thanks."
Avi smiled, and for the first time, Danny felt himself relax—just a little.
Maybe, just maybe, letting someone in wouldn't be so bad after all.
