MAELSTROM OF FATE

Chapter 1: Lost in Midnight

The battlefield lay in ruin.

Naruto Uzumaki's heart pounded as he watched his friend, Sasuke Uchiha, fade from his reach, Kaguya's All-Killing Ash Bones piercing through his body. One moment, Sasuke had been standing beside him, his Sharingan blazing with fierce determination. The next, the deadly bone spike tore through his chest, disintegrating flesh and bone into ash. Naruto's voice caught in his throat, a raw scream of fury and desperation clawing to get out.

And then… nothing.

Kaguya, her once-mighty form battered and weakened, unleashed her final act of desperation. A hole tore through dimensions, a swirling portal of chaotic energy, opening before Naruto. The goddess, silent and inscrutable, poured the last remnants of her strength into this rift—not as an attack, but as an escape. Unknown to Naruto, this was her bid to flee and recover her strength elsewhere.

Naruto, blinded by rage, didn't realize her intent. The portal's pull overwhelmed him, dragging him forward. He tried to resist, his chakra flaring instinctively, but without warning, the ground beneath him gave way, and he plunged into the swirling void.

"Naruto...!"

When the light cleared, he wasn't in the battlefield anymore.

Some Unknown Time Later

Date : Unknown

Naruto opened his eyes, the harsh sun glaring into his face. A sharp wind swept over him, prickling his skin and carrying with it the scent of damp earth and distant sea salt. He was lying on a grassy hillside overlooking a small city nestled by the coast. Towering buildings stretched into the sky, casting long shadows over the quieter parts of the city below.

Disoriented, Naruto tried to sit up, his limbs feeling heavy and unfamiliar, like he'd been asleep for days. The sight of the city confused him. It wasn't Konoha, nor any part of the Shinobi world he recognized. Forcing himself to stand, he took a deep, steadying breath and surveyed his surroundings.

"Where… am I?" he muttered, his voice weak, scratching at his throat. Instinctively, he reached out to Kurama, calling for the familiar power of the Nine-Tails within him. But there was… silence.

No presence. No rumbling, gruff response in the back of his mind. Naruto closed his eyes, focusing harder.

"Kurama?" he called, desperation threading into his tone. "Hey, come on, answer me!"

Nothing.

A feeling of dread settled into the pit of his stomach. Kurama was gone. Naruto had felt the Nine-Tails' power within him for as long as he could remember, a wild and potent chakra thrumming through his veins. Now, his energy felt hollow, stripped of the powerful essence he had come to rely on.

The realization stung, like an open wound pulsing with every heartbeat.

"Alright," he whispered to himself, pushing back the rising tide of fear. "Gotta focus. Think. Where could I be?"

Looking over the city again, he noticed a strange, modern atmosphere to the place— a carriage, sleek and compact, but unlike any you've seen before, with no horses to pull it. billboards, flashing lights in the distance. He'd seen glimpses of advanced technology in Konoha, but never like this. The place seemed alien, disconnected from everything he knew.

Naruto took a step forward, feeling a pang in his chest. Sasuke was gone. Sakura, Kakashi-sensei, everyone—he had no idea if they'd managed to escape or what Kaguya's ultimate fate had been. His fists clenched, knuckles whitening as a rush of anger and sorrow welled up inside him.

"Why…" he whispered, voice cracking. "Why did she send me here? What did she do to everyone else?"

A cool breeze drifted across the hilltop, as if mocking his isolation. Naruto took a shuddering breath, pushing back the tears threatening to fall. There was no time for grieving. He needed to get answers—and he couldn't do that by standing around. He had to find someone, anyone, who might be able to tell him where he was.

As he made his way down the hillside, Naruto kept his senses sharp, looking for any sign of life. But the landscape around him seemed oddly empty, desolate, as if even nature itself had recoiled from him. He felt out of place, unwelcome in this strange world.

By the time he reached the outskirts of the city, the sun was starting to dip toward the horizon, casting a muted orange glow over the buildings. Shadows stretched longer across the streets as Naruto continued his search. He wandered down a deserted alley, past tall apartment buildings with darkened windows.

Despite the silence, he felt a creeping sensation, as though he were being watched. His hand went instinctively to his kunai pouch, fingers brushing against the cold steel. Something wasn't right here, and his shinobi instincts were screaming for him to stay on guard.

As Naruto walked past the alleyway, the sky suddenly darkened, catching him off guard. He stopped, his heartbeat quickening as the air grew dense and suffocating, a strange greenish cast creeping over everything around him. An eerie glow settled on the scene, and an unnatural chill ran through his skin. In that unsettling stillness, his gaze fell upon a coffin surrounded by pools of thick, red liquid that looked disturbingly like blood.

Naruto looked around, instinctively scanning for a threat. He didn't know what this feeling was, but he'd fought enough battles to recognize the air of danger. His breath hitched as the shadows began to shift, writhing like living creatures across the ground. Dark, monstrous shapes started to materialize, twisting and curling as they rose from the ground like sinister apparitions.

"Alright," Naruto muttered, steeling himself as he crouched into a fighting stance. "So that's how it's gonna be, huh?"

The Shadows surged forward, featureless faces and twisting limbs lunging toward him with an eerie silence. Naruto sprang into action, dodging to the side as he tried to summon chakra for a Rasengan. But without Kurama's power, his chakra felt sluggish, thin and weak. He gritted his teeth, pushing through the strain to form a Rasengan, though it flickered weakly in his hand.

He slammed it into the first Shadow, dispersing it into a dark, mist-like cloud. But as he turned, he saw that more were coming, drawn to his presence like moths to a flame.

With a series of swift punches and kicks, Naruto fought his way through the Shadows, ducking and weaving between their dark tendrils. He had no idea what these creatures were, but his instincts told him they were unlike any foe he'd faced before. They seemed to drain the energy from the very air around him, and his attacks only seemed to slow them down temporarily.

One of the Shadows slashed at him, and Naruto stumbled back, feeling the cold, stinging pain as the creature's touch burned his skin. He gasped, clutching at the wound, struggling to catch his breath. He had no backup here, no teammates to watch his back or lend him strength and no Kurama to heal him.

Desperation clawed at him as he dodged another attack, his breathing ragged and his vision blurring. Every movement felt heavy, and his chakra reserves were depleting far faster than he was used to. The Shadows pressed in, relentless, as though they sensed his weakness and sought to consume him.

For the first time in a long time, Naruto felt fear—a cold, creeping dread that gnawed at him from within. He was alone, powerless, and far from everything he knew.

As the Shadows closed in, he felt his strength falter, his vision dimming as exhaustion overtook him. His knees buckled, and he collapsed to the ground, his breaths shallow and labored. The creatures loomed over him, their eyeless faces expressionless yet somehow brimming with malice.

In that moment, as he lay helpless on the cold ground, Naruto's mind drifted to his friends. He thought of Sasuke, who he'd been unable to save, of Sakura and Kakashi-sensei, who might be fighting for their lives even now. The faces of everyone he'd sworn to protect flashed before him, a bittersweet reminder of the world he'd been torn from.

"Is this… really how it ends?" he whispered, his voice barely audible.

But before the Shadows could descend upon him, a blinding light erupted from somewhere nearby. Naruto squinted, feeling a rush of warmth as the light forced the Shadows back, scattering them into the dark recesses of the street.

He tried to raise his head, barely managing to make out the shape of a figure approaching him through the haze. His vision faded, and darkness swallowed him as he fell unconscious, his last thought a fleeting hope that maybe, just maybe, he wasn't entirely alone in this strange, hostile world.

End of Chapter 1

A whisper of sky in a world of green,

The color of oceans, serene and unseen.

Blue like the twilight, soft as the dew,

The wings of a butterfly shimmering through.
