Chapter 4
The old, one-story house was located on the outskirts of Sioux Falls on a large lot. It couldn't be seen from the road and there was a tall fence surrounding it. Over the years, ivy and honeysuckle had covered the wire of the fence, giving it a storybook feel. The houses around it were empty with For Sale signs in their yards. The house had been rented by a stranger that had come into town nearly a month ago. He wanted the seclusion and didn't want to worry about noisy or nosey neighbors.
The stranger was much older than he appeared to be, since he had been around for nearly a century. He took on the name of Simon Van Breacher and presented himself as an eccentric millionaire who was enjoying life by touring the country. He would pick a town and find a place to stay for a month or two before moving on to the next one.
As the years flew by, Van Breacher had accumulated vast knowledge and skills that allowed him to stay off the radar of the hunters that killed his kind. He seemed to be able to stay two steps ahead of them as time passed.
Simon Van Breacher strolled through the rooms of the main part of the house to end up in the kitchen. He licked his lips as he paused at the door leading to the basement. No one knew his dark evil secrets and he was extra careful to keep his desires hidden from others. He didn't mingle much with the townsfolks unless he was searching for his next victim. Simon liked to stalk his prey and learn their habits before he made his move and kidnapped them.
Without further hesitation, Simon threw the three locks on the door and opened it to reveal a dark stairwell leading downward. He sucked in a deep breath tasting the particles of blood in the air and shivered in anticipation of what lay below. He flipped on the light switch and slowly walked down the steps.
At first glance, it looked like any other basement with old furniture, boxes, shelves, and tools scattered around the room. But at the back of the large room was another room, hidden from curious eyes where his real treasures were waiting for him. He didn't need to turn on any other lights as he strolled around the discarded items to another door and unlocked it so he could enter the room.
"Hello pets," Simon cooed to the three victims that were hanging from a heavy beam in the ceiling. "How are we today?" He strolled around each one checking the blood bags hanging on an IV rack and the special IV bags that were attached to each of their arms. He picked up a crystal glass and removed the line from one bag to let the blood flow freely into it. After replacing the line, Simon swirled the dark red liquid and inhaled the scent before sipping the warm fluid.
Sheer pleasure and contentment settled over him as he savored the coppery tasting blood. It was like nectar of the gods to him, and he took another larger swallow. He caught a trickle of blood slipping from the corner of his mouth with a finger and licked it off, not wanting to waste a drop. When he had finished his drink, Simon wiped the glass out and put it back on the table.
Simon had perfected the removal of blood from a human and had devised his own special solution to give the human, so the blood was tastier for him. It mixed in the blood stream and created a sweet, heady flavor to the blood and sedatives he gave the victims kept them unconscious as he drained them. This treatment was known only to him, and he didn't intend to pass it along to anyone else. He was a solidary creature and liked it that way.
"What is this?" Simon asked as he stepped to the first victim he had kidnapped when he noticed he wasn't breathing. "Oh well, looks like I'll have to find a replacement."
Once Simon had the young man untied and the lines removed, he carried him from the room and placed the limp body on a table so he could lock the door behind him. There was a roll of heavy black plastic leaning against the wall that he used to tightly wrap the body and tape it closed. He left the body in the basement and headed back upstairs to change clothes so he could go into the woods to dig a grave. After it got dark, he would take the body to the newly dug grave and bury it. There were other bodies in unmarked grave scattered around the forest.

With one final tap on the dirt, Van Breacher finished filling in the grave and headed back to the house. He was going to shower, dress, and head into town to scope the night life out and find his next target. Since he had two bodies to feed off, he could take his time selecting his next victim. Van Breacher would follow them, learn their habits, see where they were vulnerable and then make his move.
He had found the younger, fit humans, lasted the longest and had the best tasting blood. That is, of course, after he administrated his solution for a day or two before milking them.
Van Breacher stood in his closet surveying his pick of clothes before choosing a tailored, light weight black suit with a deep red shirt and multicolored tie and pocket hankie. He pulled soft leather black boots from the shelf and took the clothes into his room. After dressing, he studied himself in a full-length mirror, turning from side to side deciding he looked the part of a man of wealth, sophistication, influence, and power. Lastly, he pulled his long, dark hair back with a string of leather.
Once he was ready to go out, Van Breacher sated his hunger so that intense need to feed wouldn't hamper his hunt. He was picky and chose his victims carefully.
The nondescript van he drove was parked in the garage out of sight of anyone that happened by. He strolled into the garage and got into the van. After the garage door opened, he backed out and closed it back. The drive into town took about forty minutes and he went straight to where the bars and nightclubs were located. There was a parking lot he used for such occasions and found an empty space.
The nightclub he picked first was only half full. Van Breacher paused at the front of the large room, took in the crowd and checked for security cameras. It didn't take him long to size the humans up before making his way to the end of the bar and sat on a stool.
The bartender walked the length of the bar and took a towel to wipe the space in front of Van Breacher.
"What can I get you sir?" he asked putting a napkin in front of him.
"Could I get your best whiskey on the rocks," he replied pulling several bills from his jacket pocket and laying it on the bar. "Keep the change."
"Coming right up." He turned to fill a glass with ice and pour whiskey over the cubes before sitting it on the napkin. He picked up the bills, arching his eyebrows to the size of the tip before moving back down the bar to serve other patrons. The bartender kept an eye on the stranger so he could refill his drink.
Van Breacher picked up the glass and swirled the amber liquid around in the glass before taking a small sip. He had acquired the taste for the liquor over the years and treated himself when he went out. It also helped that he couldn't get drunk so he could indulge all he wanted.
All the different scents from around the room invaded his nostrils and he filtered out those that didn't appeal to him. He casually glanced toward the trail of several specific scents to see who they belonged to. A couple seemed interesting, and he made a note of the humans.
As the night progressed, more patrons filled the club and Van Breacher studied likely prey, filing away the ones he would pick from. A few women sent drinks his way and he tried to decide whether to accept one of their offerings. Van Breacher let his eyes roam up and down the red head's curvy body as she gave him a sexy look and leaned his way to show off her ample cleavage. He picked up his drink and strolled to the table the red head was sitting at.
"Hello Red," Van Breacher said in a deep, sultry voice with a British accent. "Mind if I join you?"
"Be my guest," the red head replied, gazing lustfully at him. "I love your accent so much." She thought she was getting lucky tonight, and she was going to be lucky since Van Breacher didn't want her for his pet only to satisfy his own sexual needs.
