Chapter 5
"You're what?!" George yelled in the kitchen. He rubbed his hands over his face. "Jeez, Amy. You didn't learn the lesson the first time?" Kathleen rubbed George's shoulders.
Amy and Ricky sat across from George and Kathleen in the kitchen of the Bowman/Jurgens house. They held hands as they broke the news of Amy's pregnancy to her father.
"George." Kathleen scolded him.
"Don't 'George' me. They are barely adults! And they just broke off their engagement!" George continued. "You know this means you are getting married for real now."
"No it doesn't." Kathleen interrupted. "They will get married if they decide that's the best choice. George, it's a baby. It's not the worst thing that could happen." Kathleen tried to smooth the situation.
"I'm sorry, George." Ricky apologized. "Look-"
"Don't" George held up his hand to stop them from talking further.
"Grandpa!" John's voice could be heard from around the corner. The toddler wrapped his tiny arms around the man's legs. George instantly softened.
"I guess it's not the worst thing." George ruffled the little boy's hair. "You've done a good job with this guy."
The conversation with Anne, Nora, Margaret and Shakur didn't go any better. While attempting to hide it, it was apparent that everyone was disappointed in the pair. Everyone had the same question. How was this going to work with Amy in New York? Was she coming back? Was Ricky going there? Would Amy stay there and Ricky here? Neither of the young parents had answers to those questions.
Amy followed Ricky into the apartment. The weekend had been much more eventful than she had planned but Ricky insisted that they tell everyone before she returned to New York. Amy flopped on the couch as Ricky took the sleeping John into his room.
"So what now?" Ricky asked after he returned.
"Now sleep." Amy mumbled, the early pregnancy hormones only adding to her exhaustion.
"No. What happens now? With the baby." Ricky asked. "When do you see the doctor?"
That's when it hit Amy. She had been through a pregnancy before. But Ricky hadn't. She kept Ricky at arms length her entire pregnancy with John. He wasn't invited to any appointments, he found out the gender days after she did, he wasn't even in the room when John was born.
She looked over at him. He was clearly nervous.
"I wasn't around last time you were pregnant. I'd like to be this time. If you let me." Ricky was clearly nervous.
"Of course you will be." Amy reached out and took his hand. She placed it on her non-exist baby bump.
"You'll get to be there this time." She promised him. "Next would be the first OB appointment and ultrasound."
"Can you see it this early?" He asked.
"Not really. It's just a blob at this point." She explained, "Like a gummy bear."
Ricky rubbed his hand against her flat belly.
"I'm a little excited." He admitted, smiling at his hand rubbing her belly.
"Yeah?" Amy questioned.
"Yeah."
Ricky pressed his lips firmly against hers. Amy wrapped her arms around his neck and returned the kiss with vigor. His lips left hers and began to work their way down her jaw.
"I've missed you." He said between kisses.
"I've missed you too." She kissed him again.
